Preview: Yorkshire vs Highveld Lions, Champions League 2012

Posted: 19 Oct 2012 01:30 PM PDT

South Africa’s Highveld Lions will look to inch closer to a semi-final berth when they take on struggling and injury-hit English side Yorkshire in a group B encounter of the Champions League Twenty20 at Johannesburg.

After winning both their matches in the Qualifying event, Yorkshire received a mauling at the hands of the Sydney Sixers in their first match before sharing the points against Mumbai Indians in a rained-out game.

The county side is currently placed fourth in group B.

ions, on the other hand, are placed second in the group after winning two and losing one of their preliminary games so far.

Prior to the tournament, skipper Alviro Petersen, Quinton de Kock and Neil McKenzie were identified as the three main batsmen in the Lions line-up.

But all three of them flopped against the Sydney Sixers which was a major reason for the team’s loss.

But opener Gulam Bodi sparkled with a 61 and would be expected to carry the form into the remaining matches.

Bodi had also played an fine knock against the Chennai Super Kings.

The left-arm pairing of Sohail Tanvir and Dirk Nannes will continue to be at the forefront of the Lions’ bowling plans.

Left-arm spinner Aaron Phangiso, who spent a sleepless night after getting Sachin Tendulkar’s wicket in the game against Mumbai Indians, has shown fine temperament and poses a serious threat to the Yorkshire batsmen.

Yorkshire, on the other hand, will look up to Phil Jaques, Gary Ballance and Adil Rashid to score the bulk of the runs.

The team lacks stars in the bowling department and it is important that every individual who gets to roll his arm over comes good.

With the pace duo of Ryan Sidebottom and Moin Ashraf suffering injuries in the match against Mumbai Indians last night, the task would only become tougher for Yorkshire.

Yorkshire’s spinners were the wicket-takers in the washed out match against Mumbai. Leg-spinner Adil Rashid, off-spinner Azeem Rafiq and Joe Root picked up wickets.

While Rashid returned with figures of two for 42, Rafiq accounted for two MI wickets.

Root, who opened the bowling, conceded 26 runs in his two overs, but picked up the wicket of the dangerous Dwayne Smith.

But Lions, with their better understanding of the local conditions, would be the favourites in the match on Staurday’s match.

Teams:

Yorkshire (Probable): Andrew Gale (c), Phil Jaques, Joseph Root, Adam Lyth, Gary Ballance, Adil Rashid, Dan Hodgson (wk), Azeem Rafiq, Ryan Sidebottom, Steven Patterson, Moin Ashraf.

Highveld Lions (Probable): Alviro Petersen (c), Gulam Bodi, Quinton de Kock, Neil McKenzie, Jean Symes, Thami Tsolekile (wk), Zander de Bruyn, Chris Morris, Sohail Tanvir, Aaron Phangiso, Dirk Nannes.

Abdul Razzak fined for outburst against Pakistan skipper, Mohammad Hafeez

Posted: 19 Oct 2012 11:25 AM PDT

Pakistan all-rounder Abdul Razzak was on Friday fined Rs one lakh for his recent outburst against the team’s T20 captain Mohammad Hafeez after the ICC World Twenty20 event.

Razzak had accused Hafeez of deliberately not selecting him in the World Twenty20 semi-final though the team management wanted him to be included.

The PCB had issued Razzaq a showcause notice last week asking him to explain his comments about Hafeez. Razzaq apologised for his remarks but was still fined by the PCB.

“I accept my mistake for breaching the code of conduct,” Razzaq told reporters after a meeting with PCB Chairman.

“I never had any problems with Hafeez and I accept that my outburst against him was unfair. I have already apologised for it,” Razzaq added.

Soon after the Pakistan team returned from the T20 event in Sri Lanka, Razzak criticised Hafeez for making him play in just one match right through the tournament.

Hafeez insisted that axing Razzaq from the final XI was a decision taken by the team management. “He is our asset and has been serving Pakistan for long,” Hafeez said.

“I don’t want to say much about what he said about me, but I insist that the decision not to play him was taken by the team management.”

“He is not only senior in age but also in experience.

Whatever happened is in the past now. Cricket must go on. I wish the best for Razzaq and Pakistan team,” he said. (PTI)

Riding on its batting prowess, Delhi Daredevils would look to consolidate their position in the points table when they take on a demoralised but unpredictable Auckland Aces in a crucial Group A match of the Champions League Twenty20 cricket tournament on Friday.

But it won’t be easy for the Daredevils as they will find it hard to keep the momentum going after a long gap from the playing arena.

The Delhi outfit last played four days ago when they beat reigning IPL champions Kolkata Knight Riders in their tournament opener and since then they have remained out of action.

To make matters worse for Delhi, the Aucklanders will approach the match as wounded tigers and will be desperate to return to winning ways after having lost to Titans in their previous game last night.

But all said and done, the Daredevils have the potential to turn any game on its head riding on the quality of their batting department.

In skipper Mahela Jayawardene, Virender Sehwag, Kevin Pietersen and Ross Taylor, Delhi outfit possesses a top-order which can tear apart any bowling attack in any condition.

Young Unmukt Chand is also a welcome addition to Delhi’s already powerful batting line-up as the right-hander is capable of adapting to the requirements of the team.

Delhi’s bowling attack is equally dangerous. In Irfan Pathan, Morne Morkel, Umesh Yadav and Ajit Agarkar, the IPL team has a strong pace attack, which will find the bouncy South African conditions to their liking.

In fact, Delhi’s pace quartet has already made their intentions clear during their defence of 160 runs against KKR the other day.

While Pathan, Morkel and Yadav scalped two wickets apiece, Agarkar picked up one to derail KKR’s chase.

Auckland, on the other hand, had mixed result so far in the main round. After annihilating KKR by seven wickets in the first game, the New Zealand team lost to Titans by 59 runs yesterday.

And the Gareth Hopkins-led team would be desperate to get their campaign back on track against Delhi tomorrow.

Till yesterday, Auckland were on roll given that it had won both its qualifying matches and then the first Group A game against KKR.

Devoid of any big stars, Auckland team has been a surprise package with its gritty performances.

An enterprising batting line-up has been Auckland’s strength and this was revealed in match against KKR with good contributions coming from the top order even though the target was not huge.

Experienced all-rounder Azhar Mahmood was the star performer with both the bat and ball. He would be a key player for the team along with Vincent and Martin Guptill.

The trio remains the lifeline of Auckland’s batting department, but against Titans yesterday, they failed to deliver with the bat and would be eager to return among runs. (PTI)

Teams (probable):

Delhi Daredevils: Mahela Jayawardene (c), Virender Sehwag, Unmukt Chand, Kevin Pietersen, Naman Ojha (wk), Ross Taylor, Pawan Negi, Morne Morkel, Irfan Pathan, Ajit Agarkar, Umesh Yadav.

Auckland Aces: Martin Guptill, Lou Vincent, Azhar Mahmood, Anaru Kitchen, Colin de Grandhomme, Colin Munro, Gareth Hopkins (c & wk), Ronnie Hira, Kyle Mills, Andre Adams, Michael Bates.
