Preview: Sri Lanka vs New Zealand, 1st ODI, Pallekele, 2012

Posted: 31 Oct 2012 01:30 PM PDT

It’s time New Zealand reversed its bad run in one-day internationals, captain Ross Taylor said as they prepare to take on Sri Lanka in the opener of a five-match series on Thursday.

The Kiwis lost four of five matches of their last series against West Indies in July, and before that were swept at home by South Africa 3-0 at the start of the year.

“We are not looking too far ahead, tomorrow’s game is an important one,” Taylor said on Wednesday.

Their confidence wasn’t boosted by the opening tour match on Tuesday, when New Zealand slumped to 74 for 7 in 14 overs before the one-off Twenty20 was washed out.

The pitch at Pallekele International Stadium has been covered for several days because of rain, and it is expected to retain moisture and assist seam bowlers with sharp movement, as exploited by Sri Lanka on Tuesday.

Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene and fast bowler Lasith Malinga return after being rested for the Twenty20. Left-arm spinner Rangana Herath has also been called up while offspinner Sachithra Senanayake and batsman Dilshan Munaweera, who were part of the Twenty20 squad, have been excluded.

Sri Lanka has also included 19-year-old offspinner Tharindu Kaushal. Spinner Akila Dananjaya, who made his international debut without any first-class experience in the World Twenty20, is likely to make his ODI debut on Thursday.

New Zealand has retained the same squad as the Twenty20.

Posted: 31 Oct 2012 11:00 AM PDT

England fast bowler Steve Finn has been ruled out of the remainder of their opening tour game against India A because of the thigh injury he sustained on the first day.

“Steve Finn has been ruled out of remainder of the three-day game with right thigh strain. He will be assessed over the next couple of days to determine a rehabilitation programme,” said a spokesperson of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) travelling with the team.

The 23-year-old Finn, from English county Middlesex, is yet to play against India in Tests and has taken 66 wickets from 16 Tests.

The lanky fast bowler bowled only four overs for 22 runs without taking a wicket in the opening session of play on day one yesterday at the Brabourne Stadium and took no further part as India A raked up 369 for 9 by close in 90 overs.

The touring side will next take on Mumbai A in their second three-day game at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai.

England play a four-day game on Ground A of the Motera Stadium in Ahmedabad from November 8-11 before the first Test against India commencing in the main ground there on November 15. (PTI)
