Mumbai Indians vs Sydney Sixers Post Match Presentation – CLT20 2012

Posted: 22 Oct 2012 01:02 PM PDT

Steve Smith: ‘It was nice to score a few runs. We got a decent start and lost a few wickets then. We had to rebuild and glad I could do it. It was the first game under lights so it skidded on. It’s always a good challenge to play against teams like Mumbai and perform. I try to play till the end, played a lazy shot today but hope to play till the end whenever I can. I try and be in the action always, I always want the ball to come to me when I’m fielding.’

Steve Smith is the Man of the Match

Haddin: ‘ 137 was enough, I thought. We had to get the ball in the right areas. We’ve asked our guys to get better and better in the field as the tournament progresses. We have a semi final now and it’s different cricket there. We’ve got some smart cricketers, they know their roles. We bat pretty deep.’

Harbhajan: ‘This was the kind of the game which hurt more than the last game. 137 was gettable – not in 20 overs but in 18 overs! We were too slow at the top. We didn’t take the responsibility and didn’t look to score runs. That’s all I can say. When you’re not scoring too many runs, you have to try and take singles. When that’s not happening, you try and take risky singles which caused run outs. Australians are top fielders. We didn’t get the start in the first 6 overs in this tournament. We were 26/2 in the 6 overs in the last match. We wanted to save wickets but we also have to score runs at the top. The same thing happened in the IPL as well. We need to improve as a team there. We bowled well though, we tried our best but we didn’t play as well as the other teams.’

Chennai Super Kings beat Yorkshire by wickets CLT20 2012

Posted: 22 Oct 2012 11:52 AM PDT

Chennai Super Kings produced a clinical all-round show as they scored a comfortable four-wicket victory over Yorkshire to sign off their Champions League Twenty20 campaign with a win on Monday.

Opting to field, Chennai restricted Yorkshire to 140 for six on the back of bowling from pacers Albie Morkel (2/12) and Doug Bollinger (2/16)and then romped home with six balls to spare in an inconsequential Group B match at Kingsmead.

S Badrinath top-scored with a 38-ball 47 which he made with the help of four boundaries while Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who played under Suresh Raina’s captaincy in the match, made 31 from 23 balls. Raina himself contributed 31 from 30 balls.

Chennai, the 2010 champions, ended third in Group B with eight points behind Sydney Sixers and Highveld Lions, the two teams who made it to the semifinals.

Wriddhiman Saha, who kept wickets in the match as Dhoni also decided not to wear the wicketkeeper’s gloves, hit the winning run — a single — as Chennai reached 141 for six in the last ball of the 19th over.

Chasing 141 for a win, Chennai did not have the best of starts as they lost opener Faf du Plessis (1) in the second over of the bowling of Steven Patterson.

The other opener Murali Vijay (13) struck two fours in the next over before he was out in the fifth over. Vijay wanted to hit Hannon-Dalby to midwicket fence but the ball did not take the full face of the bat as it went up high to land into the hands of Adam Lyth at square-leg.

Chennai were then at a wobbly 26 for two but Raina and Badrinath settled down quickly and shared a 48-run stand for the third wicket from 6.9 overs to take Chennai closer to the target.

Raina fell in the 12th over with Hannon-Dalby taking his second wicket with a slower ball. The Chennai captain went after a full and angled delivery but was too far through the shot when he made the contact.

The ball looped high into the air and Miller took the catch at deep cover region. Raina struck a four and a six in his 30-ball knock.

Dhoni came in when his side were 74 for three in the 12th over and he was watchful for a while before easing himself off with a six off Adil Rashid in the 15th over.

Chennai needed 33 runs to win from the last five overs and Dhoni again hit a six off Azeem Rafiq in the 16th over.

Badrinath departed in the 17th over and Ravindra Jadeja did not last long as he was out for five in the next over, leaving Dhoni and Morkel to finish the job.

However, the India captain was bowled out by Iain Wardlaw in the penultimate ball of the 19th over while attempting his trademark ‘helicopter shot’.

Earlier, Morkel and Bollinger grabbed two wickets apiece in their miserly spells of four over each as Chennai restricted Yorkshire to 140 for six after electing to field.

Morkel and Bollinger conceded 12 and 16 runs respectively to play main roles in Yorkshire’s modest total.

Ben Hilfenhaus got a wicket for 32 runs while off-spinner R Ashwin continued his less-than-impressive show in the tournament as he returned wicketless while conceding 25 runs from his four overs.

Ashwin ended the tournament with three wickets at the expense of 143 runs from the four matches he had played.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who played under Suresh Raina’s captaincy in the inconsequential match, bowled two expensive overs, conceding 25 runs without a wicket.

For Yorkshire, Gary Ballance smashed a 38-ball 58 which he scored with the help of one four and five sixes. But, he did not get enough support from his colleagues as only David Miller (28) and captain Andrew Gale (23) could score substantially.

Yorkshire made a decent start by reaching 35 for no loss after the fifth over but were reduced to 51 for three at the halfway stage before recovering at the next half.

They added just 16 runs in five overs — sixth to 10th — and slumped from 35 for no loss in the fifth over to 43 for three in the eighth over.

Ballance had a 78-run stand for the fourth wicket with Miller from 92 balls and that was the only substantial partnership in their innings after the opening stand of 35 in 5.1 overs between Gale and Adam Lyth.

Ashwin opened bowling for Chennai and he was hit for three fours in the third over by Lyth. Yorkshire captain Gale then smashed a six each off Bollinger and Hilfennhaus.

Chennai, however, struck soon after with Morkel providing the breakthrough with his first ball by removing Gale in the sixth over. Gale tried to hit him over the covers, but could not control his stroke. He got a top edge and Bollinger back-pedalled a few metres from mid off to take a comfortable catch.

Yorkshire lost their second wicket in quick time while trying to accelerate with Lyth (11) top-edging a Hilfenhaus short-of-a-length ball which ballooned up for Murali Vijay to take an easy catch mid off.

Chennai found themselves on top when they removed Joe Root in the last ball of the eighth over.

Raina introduced himself in the 11th over but was hit for two fours by Miller. Ravindra Jadeja also found himself at the receiving end as he was carted for two sixes in the 13th over.

Ballance then did a bit of recovery job as he reached his half century with a six off Hilfenhaus in the 19th over before ending his fine innings in the first ball of the final over.

Toss: Sydney Sixers have won the toss and elected to bat

Haddin: ‘I’ve decided to have a bat. Looks good from today’s game. We are just trying to get better and better. Today is a chance to have some fun. We are playing the best team we can to win this game.’

Harbhajan: ‘I would have batted for sure. In the 2007 WC we won most of the tosses and batted first. What’s done is done. We have to play well. I think overall we did not play too badly but not too great either. Hopefully we get some momentum and win out first game. We have two changes. Thisara Perera comes in for Mitchell Johnson and Munaf Patel comes in for Dhawal Kulkarni.’

Badri: ‘We decided to build a stand as the wicket wasn’t coming on. We had a couple of good partnerships which got us through. It wasn’t easy to play shots over the top, once we took our time we could play our shots. My role is to stabilise and build an innings when quick wickets go down. Unlucky not to qualify, but life goes on and we will come back stronger next year.’

Badri is the MoM for his measured innings of 47 in 38 balls.

Raina: ‘MS told me to enjoy the captaincy, in future you are going to captain. The wicket was holding a bit, it was coming on slower. Disappointing not to qualify, but we can go home and prepare for England. We are the only side from India who have a chance of winning this, unfortunately we didn’t qualify.’

Gale: ‘I thought we were 15-20 short. When we were fielding, we were sloppy which didn’t help. Fair play to Chennai though. It was an English type wicket where the bounce was spongy. The experience of playing in this tournament has been fantastic. Thanks for all the support back home.’

Their title defence having ended early with a whimper, Mumbai Indians would look to salvage some of their battered reputation with at least a win when they take on Sydney Sixers in an inconsequential Group B match of the Champions League Twenty20.

Mumbai Indians came into the tournament as one of the favourites with a star-studded squad but they have failed to live up to their reputation, losing two matches and one game being abandoned due to rain.

Group toppers Sydney Sixers, along with Highveld Lions, have cashed in onto the disappointing show by Mumbai and the other IPL team in the group, Chennai Super Kings to qualify for the semifinals with three wins on the trot.

Mumbai Indians lost their opening match to Highveld Lions by eight wickets before their next tie against Yorkshire was washed out. They once again failed to re-group and went down to Chennai Super Kings by a narrow six-run margin last night.

The Harbhajan Singh-led side would look to end the tournament on a high but with the form their tomorrow’s opponents are in, it won’t be easy for them to do that and they will have to play out of their skins.

Mumbai have performed reasonably well with the bat, having posted almost identical scores (157 and 156) in the first two matches against Lions and Yorkshire respectively before scoring 167 for seven while chasing 174 against Chennai Super Kings.

While West Indian Dwayne Bravo has managed to get some runs up the order, Mumbai have been hugely let down by Sachin Tendulkar’s lack of form as the veteran batsman could manage only 16, 7 and 2 from the three matches he had played so far.

Mumbai’s batting unit revolves around Tendulkar and he will have to come up with a big score tomorrow to help his team put enough runs on board against a strong Australian unit.

The Indian outfit would also hope that the likes of Rohit Sharma, Ambati Rayudu, Dinesh Karthik and Kieron Pollard, who have all shown their potential in one match or the other in the tournament so far, stand up together and lend some solidity to the middle-order.

MI’s bowling unit, with the exception of pacer Lasith Malinga, has completely looked off-colour and if Mumbai want to have any chance of registering a face-saving win tomorrow, the bowlers will have to fire in unison.

Sydney Sixers, meanwhile, would need to guard against complacency if they want to maintain their winning momentum going into the last four stage.

Sixers have looked formidable in the tournament so far and with the presence of Shane Watson, Brad Haddin, Steven Smith, Micheal Lumb in their ranks, the side possesses a strong batting line-up.

Their main strength, however, remains the bowling which saw them restricting Yorkshire to a meagre 96. They then allowed Lions to score a modest 137 for nine.

Both Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins have been among the wickets and with all-rounder Moises Henriques and experienced Watson also coming good with the ball, the team has the arsenal to tame any side in the tournament. (PTI)

Teams:

Mumbai Indians (Probable): Sachin Tendulkar, Dwayne Smith, Rohit Sharma, Ambati Rayudu, Dinesh Karthik (wk), Harbhajan Singh (c), Kieron Pollard, Lasith Malinga, Mitchell Johnson, Dhawal Kulkarni, Pragyan Ojha.

Sydney Sixers (Probable): Michael Lumb, Shane Watson, Dominic Thornely, Brad Haddin (c&wk), Nic Maddinson, Steven Smith, Moises Henriques, Steve O’Keefe, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood

Already out of the semi-final race, Indian Premier League (IPL) heavyweights Chennai Super Kings (CSK) would look to redeem some pride and end their campaign on a high when they take on a less-formidable Yorkshire in their final Group B match of the Champions League Twenty20 at Durban on Monday.

Both Chennai and fellow IPL side Mumbai Indians have crashed out of the tournament after Sydney Sixers and Highveld Lions qualified for the semi-finals from Group B.

Even before the first ball was bowled in Saturday night’s IPL derby between Chennai and Mumbai, the match was rendered a dead-rubber after Lions notched up a five-wicket victory over Yorkshire earlier in the day to become the second team from Group B to reach the semi-finals.

However, there was something to cheer about for Chennai fans as the Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led side eked out a narrow six-run win over Mumbai in the consequential IPL derby.

Chennai would like to carry on the winning momentum into Monday’s match and going by form, the Indian outfit starts as overwhelming favourites against Yorkshire.

The Super Kings had made a big splash when they won the IPL in 2010 and 2011 and also annexed the Champions League title in 2010 but the Dhoni-led team failed to live up to their reputation in the latest edition of the Twenty20 event and their successive loses in the first two games put paid to their title hopes this time too.

The Chennai-based team started its campaign with a 14-run loss to Sydney Sixers before suffering a six-wicket defeat at the hands of Lions. They, however, managed to register a win over Mumbai, which though came a little too late.

Against Mumbai on Saturday night, Murali Vijay and Faf du Plessis set the platform with a challenging 173 for 8 with a 86-run opening stand. Dhoni also played an useful hand with a 19-ball 35-run cameo.

And if they can continue the same way, there is no reason why Chennai can’t post a huge total against a weak Yorkshire bowling attack. .

Bowling, however, remains a concern for Chennai as their slow bowlers were taken for a ride by Mumbai batsmen last night.

But their pace department is in the safe hands of Ben Hilfenhaus, who turned out to be the hero for Chennai with figures of two for 14 from his four overs.

Injury-hit English side, Yorkshire is also out of the semi-final reckoning as they are languishing at the bottom of Group B.

After winning both their matches in the Qualifying event, Yorkshire received a mauling at the hands of Sydney Sixers in their first match before sharing the points against Mumbai Indians in a rained-out game.

They needed to win against Lions yesterday to stay in the hunt and keep the group wide open, but failed to do so, losing by five wickets in a low-scoring affair.

Yorkshire too would be desperate to sign off their campaign on a high and return home with at least a win under their belt.

And for that to happen, Yorkshire will look up to Phil Jaques, Gary Ballance and Adil Rashid to score the bulk of the runs.

Yorkshire, however, lack stars in the bowling department and it is important that every individual who gets to roll his arm over comes good. (PTI)

Teams:

Chennai Super Kings (Probable): Murali Vijay, Suresh Raina, Faf du Plessis, Subramanium Badrinath, Mahendra Singh Dhoni (c&wk), Albie Morkel, Ravinda Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Doug Bollinger, Wriddhiman Saha, Ben Hilfenhaus.
