Jeevan Mendis, Angelo Mathews and Thisara Perera batted very well in the final overs. Malinga was superb and he gave us a lot of advice. I have to work on my form. I would like to thank the crowd for their support. Perera: I enjoyed the knock. There was a little bit of pace and bounce in the wicket but the ball came on nicely. I am not copying anyone but my style resembles a bit like Sanath Jayasuriya. I am always looking to score boundaries in the first six overs. It is very good to play with youngsters. Kushal Janith Perera is the MoM for scoring 64 off 44 balls. Rahim: We gave away 20 runs more while fielding and bowling. We have achieved a lot of positives in the Tests and ODIs. We have lot of work with the bowling. The boys performed consistently. Mominul and Nasir Hossain played well. Ashraful and Tamim also played consistently. I am glad that I created history by becoming the first Bangladesh player to score 200 in the Test. The support staff worked well. I have thoroughly enjoyed playing in Sri Lanka.

Matt Prior century helps England save final test and draw series against New Zealand #EngvsNZ Posted: 26 Mar 2013 12:13 AM PDT Wicketkeeper Matt Prior produced a belligerent century to ensure England saved the series-deciding third test against New Zealand at Eden Park on Tuesday, despite Kane Williamson taking two late wickets that almost snatched victory for the hosts. Prior (110 not out) took up the responsibility of seeing the tourists home after Ian Bell had defied New Zealand for almost six hours, as England finished on 315 for nine, after they had given up chasing the 481 needed for victory on the fourth day. With England looking comfortable in the final hour, Williamson grabbed two wickets in three balls to bring Monty Panesar to the crease but the left-arm spinner and Prior saw out the final 19 deliveries to ensure the series was drawn 0-0. “Clearly quite gutted, we were so close, the boys tried everything,” Williamson, who finished with figures of four for 44, said in a televised interview. “It went down to the last ball and just gutted that we didn’t come away with the win.” New Zealand had been seeking just their ninth test win in 97 matches against England, and their first series victory against them since Stephen Fleming’s team achieved a 2-1 series win in England in 1999. Neil Wagner had captured the crucial wicket of Bell just before tea to push New Zealand to the brink of victory. Bell had curbed his natural attacking game to play the anchor role, plodding his way to 75 from 271 balls, but surrendered three balls before the break when he prodded at a Wagner delivery and it flew to Tim Southee at third slip. Prior battled on to his seventh test century and was ably supported by Stuart Broad (two not out) who had a lbw-decision overturned on review and provided obstinate defence taking 62 balls, and 102 minutes, to get off the mark. “I’m not really one to celebrate draws but to get away with that was a phenomenal effort,” Prior said. “You just dig in as best as you can. What a phenomenal effort (from Broad), what was he? Nought after facing 50 balls or something? “He’s been working so hard on his batting with Andy Flower and an innings like that proves all that hard work was worth it. “Monty was good, all our guys have been working hard in the nets for just that kind of moment.” CRACKLING TENSION The match had been crackling with tension all day, particularly when Jonny Bairstow fell after lunch as New Zealand’s bowlers, knowing the Bell-Prior partnership was the one to break, charged in, seeking that one delivery that would tip the game in their favour. Southee hit Prior on the pads twice in one over. One appeal was turned down, the next was successful, but the England wicketkeeper immediately asked for a review, knowing that he had nicked the ball into his legs first. Less than 10 minutes later, Prior mistimed a pull shot from a Southee bouncer and Wagner turned at mid-on, bolted 20 metres in a desperate attempt to make the catch that would place the hosts under huge pressure. His diving effort fell just short, however. Wagner then hit Prior in the helmet and the ball dropped down the face of the stumps, bounced and spun back and nestled at the foot of the wicket but failed to dislodge the bails. The left-armer ultimately had the final say when a tired-looking Bell fell in the final over before tea.

Even skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni asked the media not to speculate on Tendulkar, who retired from one-day internationals in December. “Do not speculate on Sachin’s career. In 2005, you (media) also said the same thing but that never happened,” said Dhoni in the post-match press conference. The cricketing world was abuzz with rumours that the fourth Test would be last time Tendulkar will bat in a Test match on Indian soil or ever. Over the weekend, the Kotla witnessed a healthy turnout. Whenever he came out to bat or went back to the pavilion, the crowd gave Tendulkar a standing ovation. Given that India will not play another Test match in India for more than a year, speculation is rife about when Tendulkar will call it a day as by the time he plays his Test on home soil, the legend will already be 41. If they have the same kind of impact as they had in India, though remains to be seen, certainly what has happened is development of a lot of players,” Gavaskar said. “It is important that useful or good players quickly develop into top players and I think that is a big plus for India after this series,” he added. The former skipper was pleased with the way India outplayed Australia in all departments of the game. “4-0 win has not happened often in the history of Test cricket and but this was a total domination of the team in all departments of the game,” Gavaskar said. “Generally what happens is when you beat an opposition, there are some outstanding performances but the rest of the team (members) have not put their hands up. So I think, it was very very important to understand that this Indian team’s performance was a team effort. “(Ravichandran) Ashwin and (Ravindra) Jadeja took 20 plus wickets, two guys (Murali Vijay and Cheteshwar Pujara) scored over 400 runs, Mahendra Singh Dhoni scored double ton. So it wasn’t just one person or dependence on one or two, it was the core that came to the party and did really well,” Gavaskar added. He also said that since Australia had just one specialist spinner, it helped India. “Teams at home are always harder to beat but England had the bowlers to exploited the Indian conditions. If there had been another quality spinner along with Nathan Lyon, maybe India would have not had it easy (against Australia as well). Though am not saying India would have lost, it won’t have been as easy as they have had,” said the former skipper. Gavaskar advised the team management to prepare for tough overseas assignments ahead sooner than later. “India now has to prepare because they know they would have to tour South Africa… the number one team. They got to prepare from right now for the tour in December. If it means making a few sacrifices…going there earlier or sending an ‘A’ team earlier. “If you prepare from now, India has a very good chance of doing well over there as well. They have the quality and that quality needs a little opportunity to bloom,” he concluded.

South Africa beat Pakistan in final ODI to win series 3-2 #PakvsSA #SAvPak Posted: 24 Mar 2013 10:14 AM PDT South African captain AB de Villiers hit an unbeaten 95 to guide his side to a series-clinching six-wicket win in the fifth and final one-day international against Pakistan at Willowmoore Park on Sunday. De Villiers, who was dropped on one, overcame some hostile bowling on an unpredictable pitch as South Africa chased down Pakistan’s 204 all out with six overs to spare. On a day when most batsmen struggled to time the ball consistently, De Villiers made his runs off just 111 balls. He hit nine fours and a six. A fourth wicket partnership of 87 off 88 balls with Farhaan Behardien (35) made South Africa’s victory virtually certain after Pakistan’s new ball bowlers, Mohammad Irfan and Junaid Khan, caused early problems on a pitch where some deliveries bounced alarmingly, while others kept low. Pakistan seemed headed for a more competitive total when they reached 151 for four in the 35th over after winning the toss. Ryan McLaren took three wickets in 13 balls to swing the match in South Africa’s favour. McLaren had Shoaib Malik caught at midwicket and three balls later, with the last delivery before the batting power play, he had big-hitting Shahid Afridi caught at deep square leg without scoring. Pakistan’s hopes then rested with their captain, Misbah-ul-Haq, who had played a match-winning innings of 80 when Pakistan squared the series at 2-2 with a three-wicket win in Durban on Thursday. As he had in Durban, Misbah started cautiously and he had scored only 24 runs off 46 balls when he was caught behind to become McLaren?s third victim. South Africa were without opening batsman and Test captain Graeme Smith because of what was described as a chronic left ankle injury which kept him off the field for most of Pakistan’s run chase in Durban. He was replaced by 20-year-old left-hander Quinton de Kock. De Kock looked out of his depth and was bowled by Junaid Khan for three, while Hashim Amla was unusually subdued in scoring 22 off 65 balls. With Colin Ingram bowled by off-spinner Mohammad Hafeez for 15, South Africa needed a partnership. De Villiers edged Junaid low to Younis Khan at slip when he had one and the chance went down. Really happy with my show in the series as well, hopefully this will continue.’ AB de Villiers is the Man of the Match and the Man of the Series Misbah-ul-Haq: Yea it is disappointing that we lost the series. It was a 250 pitch, we were on track but lost crucial partnerships. Shot selection was poor and South Africa were a better side today. If our batsmen spent more time at the centre thinsg might have been different. We dropped AB early on, it happens it cricket and in the end he was outstanding. We have a lot of positives, Mohammad Irfan was brilliant, really impressed by him. We did well in the ODI and T20 series, test matches didn’t go our way. the team has learnt a lot and hopefully we can improve from the imputs that we have got. On the whole it has been a good series over here, I thank the South African cricket board for their hospitality.

India beat Australia by 6-wickets in Delhi test, completes 4-0 series whitewash #IndvsAus #IndvAus Posted: 24 Mar 2013 04:46 AM PDT India completed a historic 4-0 clean sweep against Australia by recording an emphatic six-wicket victory in the fourth and final Test on Sunday. On a Feroz Shah Kotla track which is not conducive for good batting, India chased down a tricky target of 155, largely due to Cheteshwar Pujara’s dazzling strokeplay as the home team recorded their biggest ever series win in the 81-year history inside three days. Pujara, who was battling pain as he was playing with a swollen hand, enthralled one and all with his perfect technique on a rank turner, scoring a brilliant unbeaten 82 off 92 balls with 11 boundaries. For Australia, it was the first time in 43 years to suffer a 0-4 series whitewash after Bill Lawry’s side did the same in South Africa in 1969-70. There were a few jitters when India lost Virat Kohli (41), Sachin Tendulkar (1) and Ajinkya Rahane (1) in quick succession but Pujara kept his cool in company of skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (8 not out) to successfully complete the run chase. Pujara hit three boundaries off Glenn Maxwell to level the scores and then Dhoni hit the winning boundary to send the 25,000-odd crowd at the stadium into a frenzy. The on-field celebrations were muted but the dressing room was delirious with joy as the players engaged in bear hugs. The target of 155 might have looked quite a task but both Pujara and Kohli made batting look easy on a difficult track, adding 104 runs for the second wicket to pave the way for victory. Starting the run chase, Murali Vijay (11) was bowled trying to play an unnecessary reverse sweep but Pujara played some unorthodox shots to set the tone. Pujara showed positive intent as he and Kohli scored at a brisk pace. The Saurashtra lad showed his stroke-making prowess as India reached their 50 in the ninth over. Pujara played the sweep shot to good effect but his two best shots were played of Mitchell Johnson. First, he deliberately lobbed a Johnson bouncer over wicketkeeper Matthew Wade’s head and then hit a fierce square-cut on the rise. The third boundary of the over was hit through the cover. As if he was getting into the IPL mode, Pujara scored his second 50 of the match from just 54 balls and India’s 100 was reached in 19 overs at a rate of more than five runs per over. While Pujara stepped up the ante, Kohli was happy playing the second fiddle. Inexplicably, Australian captain Shane Watson did not use leggie Steven Smith, who could have effectively used the rough, nor did he call James Pattinson or Peter Siddle to bowl to exploit some of the spots created at the Delhi Gate End. Earlier, on the pitch prepared by Venkat Sundaram which resembled a minefield, Ravindra Jadeja (5/58) created terror in the minds of the Australian batsmen as he extracted vicious turn and bounce as they were all-out for 164 in their second innings. Siddle produced another gutsy performance with the willow as he took the Indian attack by the scruff of its neck, scoring a 45-ball 50 with seven boundaries. His innings was a lesson for Australian top-order batsmen about the technique needed to survive on a treacherous track. Incidentally, Siddle was the best Aussie batsman in both their innings as his effort meant that the visitors put up a score which could be considered decent enough on this kind of track. Jadeja first removed Glenn Maxwell, who was sent up the order to open the innings. Maxwell (8) did not come fully forward to a delivery from Jadeja that pitched on the middle stump and turned a shade to hit the off-stump. David Warner (8) was then trapped leg before in Jadeja’s very next over as the batsmen played a length ball on the backfoot. He was caught plumbed in-front as the delivery would have hit the leg-stump. The tension brewing between Jadeja and Warner came into the forefront once again as the Indian left-arm spinner gave the batsman a rude ‘send-off’ which could earn him a sanction from the match referee. Phillip Hughes, who had two decent knocks under his belt, got a questionable decision when R Ashwin, coming round the wicket, trapped him on his back-pad. The television replays showed that the ball would have probably missed the off-stump. Hughes managed only six. The normally dogged Ed Cowan (24, 5×4) employed a positive approach as defending on this track looked impossible. Most of the times, the tactic he used to counter Jadeja was to take a big stride forward to stop the ball from doing unusual tricks. He got a few boundaries in the process. Stand-in captain Shane Watson hit a lovely on-drive but then played a rash shot off an innocuous delivery from Pragyan Ojha. Watson rocked on the backfoot to pull a short delivery and missed the line to get bowled. The score was 51 for four at that stage but within two runs, Cowan was gone as Jadeja pitched one on the good length and turned enough to catch the left-hander on the backfoot. Within first 20 overs of the Australian second innings, the top five were back in the hut. The post-lunch session saw Steven Smith and Johnson being removed by Jadeja off successive deliveries but two crucial stands of 28 and 35 for eighth and ninth wickets respectively — both involving Siddle — helped the visitors cross 150. In the morning, it took only eight minutes and 13 deliveries to polish off the Indian tail as Nathan Lyon got his career-best figures of 7 for 94 as the home side managed a slender lead of 10 runs.

It was a good thing that there were a few changes to the side. There were some brilliant individual performances. Ashwin, Vijay, Dhawan and Jadeja did very well. We batted 2nd always and we all know how difficult it is to bat 4th in India. I thought yesterday was more difficult to bat on this track than today. I may be wrong. Credit to the support staff. The last 1 or 2 years has not been great for us in Tests. They showed a lot of character. It’s the end of the season for us. We get some time off national duties before the Champions trophy. Ishant was a bit angry that the crowd here wanted Virat to get out because they wanted to see Sachin to come out. The crowd everywhere has been fantastic and they came out to support us well.’ Ashwin: ‘Everything went pretty well. I had to do some changes after the England series. My delivery stride was too long. It went haywire during the course of the England series. I was lucky to have a coach who identified it quickly. Credit also to Duncan Fletcher and Joe Dawes. I needed a kick on the backside and I got one. It was quite a tricky wicket. I think Pujara deserves a lot of credit today. He played a fantastic innings. I thought Jadeja deserved the MoM today. It was a superb 2nd spell from him today. He knows what he’s doing and troubled a lot of the frontline Aussie batsmen.’ No surprises as Ashwin is declared the Man of the series. He picked up 29 wickets in the 4 Tests. Jadeja: ‘The wicket was helping the spinners. I just wanted to do well and glad I did. Unfortunately, I did not get many runs but I bowled very well in this series. I just tried to bowl in the right areas. I played my natural shots. I was happy with the way I batted yesterday. Ashwin bowled very well throughout the series. We hope to continue in the same way.’ The Man of the Match is Ravindra Jadeja for his all-round show. He picked 43 runs and 7 wickets. Watson: ‘It was a hardcore Test match. We certainly gave everything we had. Things did not go exactly how we wanted to but credit to the guys. We thought that 150-200 on that wicket was a tough one. We did not bowl exactly where we wanted to. The wickets have been very different to the ones at home. We are learning. We hope to continue to do so. We were looked after very well.
