Shane Shillingford: Definetely I am happy to perform well in front of my home crowd. The bounce was consistent in this pitch compared to Barbados and we had a good score on the board. There was no pressure playing in my home ground. I am happy to have broken the record of Walsh for the most wickets in a 2-match series. I want to thank all my fans who have come out to support me.

Shane Shillingford is the Man of the Match for his match figures of 10/93. He is also the Man of the Series for taking 19 wickets.

Darren Sammy: We wanted to win the Test series, but we managed to win all the matches in this series, including the ODIs and T20Is. We are disappointed for the crowds for finishing the match quickly, but I hope they have enjoyed the way we played. Shilingford has been the major factor, but all other bowlers also chipped in with wickets. The batsmen also played well and we got important partnerships at the right time. Gayle and Chanders played well in this match. Some of the guys will be leaving for IPL including me and then we will go to England for the Champions Trophy.

Brendan Taylor: We came here to perform well, but I am disappointed by the way things have turned out. We need to regroup and go back home to prepare for the Bangladesh series. Full credit to West Indies for the way they played. It’s always going to be tough performing on this wicket, but we need to practice hard. We have lot of areas of concern, we need to go home and sort it out.

Kotla pitch yet again in the news for the India-Australia 4th Test #IndvsAus

Posted: 22 Mar 2013 06:15 AM PDT

Kotla pitch yet again in the news for the India-Australia 4th TestThe pitch at the Feroz Shah Kotla is in the news again. It has shown signs of cracking on day one of the fourth Test between India and Australia. The experts do not see the match lasting the full five days.

Indian spinners got good purchase of the surface Friday with the Australians unable to adjust to the variable bounce. Like they did right through the series, Ravichandran Ashwin, Pragyan Ojha and Ravindra Jadeja kept the Australian batsmen guessing.

Eyebrows were raised when a good length ball from speedster Ishant Sharma rose sharply off the cracks to find the grill of Phil Hughes`s helmet. The incident played on the Australian`s mind and in the same over he played on.

The TV commentators, all former India and Australian star players, were spot on. They all thought the pitch had a nasty look and the match may not last long.

V.V.S. Laxman said it resembled a 'day three' pitch while Ravi Shastri predicted an early end to the game while giving his pitch report before the toss.

Former Pakistan captain Ramiz Raja chose not to comment on the behaviour of the pitch.

“At the start of the match, it looked like a three-day wicket to me, but the cracks are opening up already,” said Raja.

“It would be too early to predict the nature of the pitch. There are cracks, which will provide good turn to the spinners. We need to wait and see before commenting on its nature.”

The Kotla pitch has been a subject of debate ever since an ODI in 2009 featuring India and Sri Lanka was abandoned as it was deemed “dangerous and unplayable”. Following this, Kotla was taken off the international circuit by the ICC and banned for international matches.

Curator Venkat Sundaram was unavailable for a comment.

Australian skippers are Sir Ravindra Jadeja’s bunnies #IndvAus

Posted: 22 Mar 2013 05:45 AM PDT

Australian skippers are Sir Ravindra Jadeja's bunniesLeft-arm orthodox bowler Ravindra Jadeja seems to have taken more than a liking for Australia captains, having clinched their wickets six out of seven times in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy series against Australia.

Jadeja on Friday took the wicket of stand-in skipper Shane Watson at the Ferozeshah Kotla on the first day of the fourth and final Test.

In total, Michael Clarke, who is not playing the fourth Test due to chronic back pain, has been bowled twice, stumped twice and caught once off Jadeja’s bowling. Watson, who is standing in for Clarke, was also stumped by India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni in the post-lunch session.

The only time the 24-year-old did not take the Australia captain’s wicket was in the second innings of the first Test in Chennai when Ravichandran Ashwin caught Clarke plumb in front of the stumps.

The Saurashtra all-rounder has taken 17 wickets in the first three Tests of the series with best bowling figures of 3/33.

Spinner put India on top yet again on Day 1 against Australia #IndvsAus #IndvAus

Posted: 22 Mar 2013 05:12 AM PDT

Spinner put India on top yet again on Day 1 against AustraliaAustralia once again proved their weakness on spinning tracks as their batsmen crumbled against Indian spinners on Day 1 of the fourth and final Test at Ferozshah Kotla on Friday.

Off-spinner R Ashwin led the attack with 4-40 as India were able to get regular breakthroughs throughout the day as Australia managed 231/8 at stumps on the first day.

Even though the Aussie top-order was not able to stand up against the likes of Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, it was their lower-order batsmen who gave India a firm resistance in the final session.

Peter Siddle (46 not out) was the mainstay of the tail-enders as he formed crucial partnerships with Steven Smith and James Pattinson.

Siddle added 53 runs for the eighth wicket with Smith (46) and 41 with Pattinson for the ninth wicket.

Ashwin and Jadeja shared six wickets between them, with Ashwin taking four while Jadeja picked up the remaining two.

Ashwin got rid of Australia’s Steven Smith to provide India crucial breakthrough in the post lunch session.

Smith (46) edged Ashwin’s delivery off to short-leg where debutant Ajinkya Rahane was quick to nab it.

Earlier, Steven Smith and Peter Siddle steadied the otherwise crumbling Australian line up to guide the visitors to 153/7 at tea.

After Ishant Sharma provided a couple of breakthroughs in the opening session, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja ripped through Australia’s middle-order. The bowlers were also helped by some atrocious shot selection on the part of the Aussie batsmen.

Both the spinners were equally effective as they shared six wickets between them, with Ashwin taking four while Jadeja picked up the remaining two.

From a relatively secure 94 for two at lunch, the visitors looked in a tearing hurry as they paid dearly for their indiscretion, losing wickets in a heap.

Credit should also be given to India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni for rotating his bowlers successfully. He frequently changed the ends from which each one of them operated, thereby making life difficult for the batsmen.

Ed Cowan (37) did all the hardwork surviving the dangerous first session, playing and missing on a number of occasions. Just when he looked set, Cowan went for a sweep shot and was bowled round his legs.

Australian cricket’s newest ‘Enfant Terrible’ Shane Watson didn’t impress on his Test captaincy debut. Having survived a stumping appeal in the first session, the all-rounder was removed by a typical left-arm spinner’s delivery from Jadeja.

The delivery pitched on the leg-middle as he drew Watson forward and the stand-in captain was beaten comprehensively trying to whip the delivery through mid-wicket. Dhoni took off the bails in a flash. Watson made 17.

Matthew Wade (2) was caught by silly point fielder to give Ashwin his second wicket, while IPL’s newest ‘Million Dollar baby’ Glenn Maxwell gave Jadeja the charge when he offered a simple catch to Ishant at mid-on.

Adam Gilchris signs up for Caribbean Premier T20 League (CPL)

Posted: 22 Mar 2013 04:00 AM PDT

Adam Gilchris signs up for Caribbean Premier T20 League (CPL)Former Australia wicketkeeper-batsman Adam Gilchrist has been named the second international franchise player to be participating in the Caribbean Premier T20 League (CPL), commencing on July 29.

Gilchrist has joined his former Australia teammate and captain Ricky Ponting as the latest international star to sign up with the League.

“I am very excited to be on board with CPL, and am looking forward to coming back and playing cricket in one of the most beautiful places on the planet,” said Gilchrist.

“The CPL will feature some of the world’s best cricketers and I can’t wait to test my skills and play in what is going to be a dynamic and exciting competition,” he added.

The stumper, who has toured the Caribbean three times as a player, has one of the fondest memories in the West Indies when he had smashed 149 off only 104 balls in the final of the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2007 against Sri Lanka to help Australia lift the trophy.

“I always have fond memories of my time playing cricket in the Caribbean and visiting all of the stunning locations and attractions that are on offer for the players and spectators alike.

“Plus, I love playing the Twenty20 format and there is absolutely no better place anywhere to do this than the West Indies,” he said.

Gilchrist is yet to know which franchise he will be lining up for when the CPL draft takes place. The draft is expected to take place at the end of May.

As many as 90 players will be contracted to play in the CPL. Each of the six franchise teams will be comprised of 15 players. All teams are required to have a minimum number of local players from that particular country.

More international players will be announced in the coming weeks, according to CPL organisers, as plans kick into high gear in preparation for the biggest sporting event in the Caribbean.

Won’t let back problem end career, Michael Clarke #IndvsAus

Posted: 22 Mar 2013 03:15 AM PDT

Won't let back problem end career, Michael ClarkeThe latest recurrence of Michael Clarke’s back spasm has raised questions about his long-term future but the Aussie captain insisted that the chronic back troubles, which have plagued him for nearly half his life, will not force him to cut short his international career.

Clarke, ruled out of the ongoing fourth and final Test here due to back spasm, said that he will not let the injury make him quit the game earlier than he would prefer.

“It won’t have any impact, it hasn’t had any impact in regards to my Test cricket at this stage. I don’t think it will play any role at all,” said Clarke.

“Right now, I’ve been able to manage it for – what am I now, 31? I had my first scan at 17 that said I had degeneration in my disc. I’ve been able to manage it this long, I don’t see any reason why I can’t continue to manage it for the rest of my career,” he added.

Clarke had suffered back spasm during a fielding drill in the third Test against India at Mohali, but the skipper expressed confidence that he could manage the degenerative discs in his lower back as he had done it throughout his career.

“It’s a combination of things, my back gets irritated when I’m in flexion and I rotate, so I hurt it the other day doing fielding, sprinting for a ball, picking it up one day and throwing it off balance, which is exactly the opposite to what my back likes.

“But I’ve done that a number of times throughout my career in regards to every time I field. Sometimes with degeneration of the disc, it can flare up, but I will manage it as well as I can,” Clarke was quoted as saying by ‘Sydney Morning Herald’.

Clarke had received intensive treatment from team physiotherapist Alex Kountouris since the recurrence of the bout of pain but failed to recover in time to take the field.

It is the first time that Clarke has been forced to miss a Test since he made his debut in 2004.

“I’m very grateful for the people around, especially Alex Kountouris and my physio when I’m back in Sydney to keep me on the park consistently.

“I don’t know if it’s as bad as it’s been. It’s not a nice feeling, it was very uncomfortable and it affected my performance (in Mohali), in regards not to the number of runs I made but the movement,” explained the skipper.

“I felt I couldn’t move down the wicket because I was so restricted and I’d hate to see what the fielding side of it looked like. For me as a batsman if I can’t walk out there and make a hundred because this is going to restrict me doing that, then I don’t think it’s fair on the team to take the field,” he said.

Preview : Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka 1st ODI Hambantota 2013 #BanvsSL

Preview - Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka 1st ODI Hambantota 2013Bangladesh will seek inspiration from their Asia Cup victory over Sri Lanka when they open a three-match one-day series in Hambantota on Saturday.

Mushfiqur Rahim’s Bangladeshis proved they were capable of surprising big teams in the shorter format of the game when they beat World Cup finalists India and Sri Lanka on their way to the Asia Cup final in Dhaka last year.

Bangladesh, who registered their third one-day win over Sri Lanka in 30 matches, produced more encouraging results at home last year, including a series victory over the West Indies.

The tourists also gave a good account of themselves in the opening Test against Sri Lanka in Galle before losing the second match and the series in Colombo recently.

“The way we played the first Test we can take a lot of positives. In the second Test, we bowled them out in one innings and that is quite a positive sign,” Rahim said.

“We have been really playing well over the last one-and-a-half years.”

Bangladesh’s batting has been bolstered with the return of Mohammad Ashraful, who played his last one-dayer in October 2011. He looked in good touch in the recent Tests, scoring 190 in the opening match.

Sri Lankan all-rounder Angelo Mathews will be keen to complete a double as captain after leading his side to victory in the Test series.

“It was important to win the (Test) series whoever you play against. We were under pressure to win and I think we played some really good cricket,” said the Sri Lankan skipper.

Sri Lanka have also done well in recent one-dayers, winning a five-match series at home against New Zealand in November and then drawing a tough series 2-2 in Australia in January.

The second match will also be played in Hambantota on Monday, before the final encounter in Pallekele on March 28.

Peter Fulton century put New Zealand in command on Day 1 #EngvsNZ

Posted: 22 Mar 2013 12:15 AM PDT

Peter Fulton century put New Zealand in command on Day 1Peter Fulton scored his maiden Test century as he anchored New Zealand to an impressive 250 for one at the close of play on the first day of the series-deciding third Test against England at Eden Park on Friday.

Fulton, who shared in a 79-run opening partnership with Hamish Rutherford (37), was unbeaten on 124 with Kane Williamson on 83 at stumps after England captain Alastair Cook won the toss and put the hosts in.

The 22-year-old Williamson, in sight of his fourth test century, joined Fulton just five minutes before lunch and the pair combined to frustrate the England attack with an inspiring 171-run stand.

The hosts were 173 for one when they resumed after the tea break and Fulton moved to 99 when he got up on his toes and pulled a short Steven Finn delivery to the midwicket boundary.

England’s ‘Barmy Army’ of travelling fans broke into their customary chants in an effort to unsettle the tall righthander, who spent nine balls on 99 and resisted the temptation posed by a succession of wide deliveries from paceman Finn.

Fulton broke the spell when he worked a ball from spinner Monty Panesar wide of mid-on for a single and permitted himself a low-key celebration, removing his helmet and raising his bat to acknowledge a standing ovation from the crowd.

England’s only success on the placid Eden Park pitch came when Rutherford wafted at a wide delivery from Finn and nicked the ball to Cook at first slip shortly before lunch.

GREEN PITCH

England captain Cook won his first toss of the test series and chose to bowl on a drop-in pitch that showed green tinges and promised more bounce than the wickets in Dunedin and Wellington.

Cook’s fast-bowling trio of James Anderson, Stuart Broad and Finn produced some anxious moments for Fulton and Rutherford in the morning session but once the sun emerged and flattened out the pitch, New Zealand were barely troubled.

England were also culpable for bowling a little too straight, and Fulton exploited that to the fullest, whipping the ball through the leg side for 98 of his runs.

The 34-year-old Fulton was particularly aggressive against left-armer Panesar, who bowled too short and allowed the tall righthander to rock back and belt him to the leg side boundary four times and over it twice.

Fulton’s previous best test score was 75 against West Indies in 2006 and prior to the first match in Dunedin had not played a test since 2009.

He remade himself as an opener in the interim period and was recalled on the back of a strong first class season.

‘I am accountable for flop show in India’, says Michael Clarke #IndvsAus

Posted: 21 Mar 2013 11:45 PM PDT

I am accountable for flop show in India, says Michael ClarkeAustralian captain Michael Clarke has said that he is totally accountable for the team’s struggles in the Border-Gavaskar Test series against India, as the team is just a defeat away from becoming Australia’s worst Test outfit in 34 years.

Clarke, missed the fourth Test in Delhi due to a back injury, has accepted that he should not be immune to criticism if Australia falls to a 4-0 series loss ahead of the Ashes.

Giving his backing to his deputy Shane Watson for taking over as captain if he fails a fitness test this morning, Clarke said that he is under scrutiny daily, adding that being the captain, he is accountable for his team not having any success in the India Tests.

Stating that critics are not wrong in holding him responsible for the flop show in India, Clarke said that he is disappointed in the performances of the team as he felt that they can perform better as they have the talent to do it.

Dismissing reports of the Delhi Test being labelled as dead rubber, Clarke said that he hoped to sign off the series with a win even though India had won the Border-Gavaskar trophy, adding that for a positive outcome, his team needed to play their best cricket.

Stating that his team knows the conditions, opposition and the areas where they need improvement very well, Clarke said that every single player in his team has learnt from the tour, which has been a learning curve and challenging for the players.

Currently ranked third in the ICC’s Test rankings behind South Africa and England, Australia will officially drop to fourth if they are beaten by India in the fourth Test starting today in Delhi.

The last Australian team to lose four Tests in a series was in 1978-79, when Graham Yallop’s side was thumped 5-1 on home soil by an English team inspired by Ian Botham and David Gower, the report added.

Toss: Australia have won the toss and elected to bat

Watson: The wicket will be good for day 1 and day 2, hope to make good use of it. It has been an amazing week to be honest, it’s good to be back and lead my country. Wade returns for Haddin. Maxwell replaces Henriques.

Dhoni: I’ve lost the toss consecutively quite a few times. The reverse swing will be a factor in this track. This is the end of the season, after this we play for our franchises so it’s good to finish the season well. Rahane replaces Dhawan and that’s the only change in the side. We have been doing well as a team so I didn’t want to make any other changes.

Pitch report: ‘Very rough, patchy, has some cracks and looks abbrasive. It’s not hard at the base. It doesn’t look good for the batsmen. There is going to be a lot of wear and tear. The ball is going to turn for sure. It’s going to test the batsmen’s technique and patience. ‘
