Lahiru Thirimanne, Dinesh Chandimal maiden ton put Sri Lanka in command on Day 2Lahiru Thirimanne and Dinesh Chandimal cracked maiden Test centuries to put Sri Lanka in command on the second day of the opening Test against Bangladesh in Galle on Saturday.

Left-handed Thirimanne hit a solid 155 not out and Chandimal an unbeaten 116 as the hosts declared their first innings closed at 570-4 after adding 209 to their overnight total of 361-3 for the loss of just one wicket.

Bangladesh were 135-2 in their first innings at stumps, with Mohammad Ashraful unbeaten on 65 and debutant Mominul Haque 35 not out.

Paceman Shaminda Eranga struck first when he had opener Jahurul Islam (20) caught behind and then unorthodox spinner Ajantha Mendis bowled debutant Anamul Haque (13) in his first over to put pressure on Bangladesh.

Ashraful then steadied the innings as he added 70 for the unfinished third-wicket stand with Mominul. He has so far hit seven fours in his 108-ball knock.

Thirimanne, playing his ninth Test, hit 14 fours in his 256-ball knock while Chandimal, in his sixth Test, smashed two sixes and 12 fours in a 151-ball innings. The pair dominated the Bangladeshi attack for more than a session.

Bangladesh failed to make the most of the chances that came their way in the morning as they twice let off Chandimal early in his innings. The Sri Lankan went on to add 203 with Thirimanne.

Thirimanne, 74 overnight, completed his hundred in the morning when he lofted left-arm spinner Elias Sunny over mid-on for two runs while Chandimal reached his century in the afternoon with three runs off spinner Mominul.

Chandimal went for big shots after scoring a 91-ball fifty as he took 45 more deliveries to complete his century, hitting a six each off spinners Mohammad Mahmudullah and Sohag Gazi.

Off-spinner Gazi finished with 3-164 off 50 overs, taking all of his wickets on Friday. Seamer Abul Hasan was the other wicket-taker, finishing with 1-112 off 27 overs.

Hasan, playing his second match, got a maiden Test wicket when he held a return catch to remove Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews early in the morning.
Mathews, who could add just two runs to his overnight score of 25, put on 62 for the fourth wicket with Thirimanne.

Pakistan vs South Africa 1st ODI Live Streams 2013

After the successful test series and losing the T20 series South Africa will now move into 5 match ODI series against Pakistan. South Africa haven’t been the best side in limited over cricket compared to the test side. It will be competition where they have to unite all their energy and produce some results rather than choking every time. Pakistan on the other hand have been a strong and competitive team in limited over cricket. They won the last ODI series they played against Indian in India and also won the T20 series here in South Africa. The addition of Shahid Afridi and Shoaib Malik has been a big plus and also Mohammad Hafeez came back in form the last T20. So a lot of positives for Pakistan team ahead of the ODI series. In the bowling too Umar Gul bowled a splendid spell in the T20 match and will be looking to continue the performance for the Pakistan team.

Dale Steyn rested, Morne Morkel doubtful for Pakistan-South Africa 1st ODI #PakvsSA

Posted: 09 Mar 2013 01:30 AM PST

Dale Steyn rested, Morne Morkel doubtful for Pakistan-South Africa 1st ODISouth Africa are likely to go into the first one-day international against Pakistan on Sunday without both their strike bowlers, Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel.

Coach Gary Kirsten announced on Friday that Steyn will only join up with the squad before the second match in the five-game series in Centurion next Friday. Morkel, meanwhile, is recovering from a hamstring injury.

“Dale bowled close to 180 overs during the Tests against New Zealand and Pakistan and was always going to be rested for the first ODI as part of our rotation policy with the bowlers, whether he was with us or not,” said Kirsten.

“At this stage we are waiting on the fitness of Morne Morkel. If he fails to recover in time, we need to look at it positively because it is an opportunity for another player to be tested at this level.”

Spin bowler Aaron Phangiso and batsman David Miller were released to play in domestic matches on Friday.

They will rejoin the squad on Saturday but it seems unlikely either will be in the team on Sunday, effectively leaving South Africa with 12 players to choose from, including Morkel.

Glenn Maxwell likely to be axed from India-Australia Mohali Test #IndvsAus

Posted: 09 Mar 2013 12:45 AM PST

Glenn Maxwell likely to be axed from India-Australia Mohali TestGlenn Maxwell is in line to get axed for the next Test match against India in Mohali, which is known for its pace friendly pitch, and the Australian think tank could play an extra fast bowler to make most of the conditions.

Reprising their four-pronged pace attack would bring Mitchell Starc or Mitchell Johnson into the frame, leaving Maxwell or left-arm finger-spinner Xavier Doherty firmly in the firing line for the third Test, starting Thursday, News.com.au reports.

Australian coach Mickey Arthur said Nathan Lyon was axed after the first Test partly because the tourists liked the variety of Doherty, whose stock ball turns away from India’s all right-handed top six, and the conundrum is Maxwell, who made 13 and 8 with the bat, outperformed Doherty, the frontline spinner, in the second Test nightmare in Hyderabad.

The Victorian all-rounder claimed 4-127, including top-order scalps Murali Vijay, MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli, while Doherty (3-131) had 0-124 from 42 overs at one stage before picking up three cheap tailend wickets.

The selectors, however, are concerned at Maxwell leaking 4.88 runs an over in Hyderabad. Doherty was tighter, going for just 2.83, but his strike-rate was inferior.

Arthur said they have got to sit down and determine how best they can take 20 wickets, adding Maxwell was probably a little bit too loose.

Arthur added Maxwell has taken four wickets, and he has created opportunities, but he’s gone at over four-and-a-half (runs) an over.

Arthur further said Doherty did what they know he can do, adding he ran in, he went at under three an over and he caused problems when there was stuff for him to work with.

The coach further added there is a massive amount of potential in Maxwell though, and if they go back to three quicks again, the conditions will determine that when they get to Mohali. (ANI)

Since Gary Kirsten took over as South African coach in June 2011 the country’s Test team has risen relentlessly to the top of the International Cricket Council rankings. The performances of the one-day side, though, have been patchy at best.

A five-match series against Pakistan, starting at Chevrolet Park here Sunday, marks a change of focus for the Proteas, who have slipped to fourth place in the rankings for the 50-over format. Pakistan are sixth on a tightly-bunched table.

Kirsten said South Africa could play as many as 20 one-day internationals before their next Test series, against Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates in October and November.

“It’s nice to have an extended period of one-day internationals,” he said. “This is an important period for the ODI team.”

Of immediate concern for South Africa is the ICC Champions Trophy in England in June, the team’s next major engagement after the Pakistan series.

The country’s consistent failure to win big tournaments is one of the issues that Kirsten has pledged to address.

Although South Africa have a less than stellar one-day record of 10 wins and eight losses under Kirsten, the coach is not over-concerned because the international schedule has dictated an emphasis on five-day cricket.

“We have had a lot of Test cricket,” he said.

Nor was he concerned about a lop-sided 95-run defeat in a Twenty20 international at Centurion last Sunday, which he dismissed as a “one-off” game, irrelevant to the one-day challenge.

South Africa were beaten 2-1 at home by New Zealand in their most recent one-day series after winning both Tests against the Black Caps by an innings.

Pakistan shape up as a bigger threat with players such as Shoaib Malik, Shahid Afridi and the Akmal brothers, Kamran and Umar — all of whom missed their side’s recent 3-0 Test series defeat — adding experience and skill to the squad.

The Pakistanis seem to have most of their bases covered, with a mix of quick-scoring batsmen and a well-balanced bowling attack, while the fielding in the Twenty20 match was of a high standard.

South Africa, though, are likely to be a more organised team than that which lost to New Zealand — and a great deal stronger than the T20 side — with stars such as Hashim Amla, Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel and Test captain Graeme Smith returning to the squad.

Steyn will be rested for the first match, though, and Morkel is doubtful because of a hamstring injury.

Leading all-rounder Jacques Kallis will not be in action as he is being rested as part of a programme to extend the career of the 37-year-old.

Michael Clarke confident about team bouncing back in Mohali test #IndvsAus

Posted: 08 Mar 2013 11:15 PM PST

Michael Clarke confident about team bouncing back in Mohali testAustralia cricket captain Michael Clarke believes that his team can make a comeback in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India despite being 0-2 down in the four-match Test series.

“Yes, we can come back in the series. If we can win the third Test in Mohali then we have a chance to make it 2-2. Had there been a fifth Test, I am sure we would have won the series 3-2,” Clarke said.

Clarke admitted that India performed much better as a unit than his team.

“India have been playing really good. They have proved better in all departments of the game – batting, bowling and fielding. But we have learned a lot from our mistakes in the first two Tests. Now we are going to the third Test as a more experienced team. We know its going to be tough but it’s in our nature not to give up. Australia will fight till the end.”

“We offer no excuses for losing. Credit goes to India for playing better cricket,” added the 31-year-old.

Asked about India opener Virender Sehwag’s axing from the Test squad, Clarke said that the explosive opener has the talent and ability to make a comeback to the Indian team.

“I shouldn’t be speaking on selection of Indian players as I remained too focussed on the Australian team but Virender is a fantastic cricketer in all three formats of the game. I am sure he would be back in the team,” said the middle-order batsman.

Clarke paid a visit to the Taj Mahal on Thursday with his wife. When asked about the experience, Clarke said: “It was great and magnificent. After all, it’s one of the seven wonders in the world.”

India currently lead the series 2-0 with the next two matches at Mohali (March 14-18) and New Delhi (March 22-26).

Alastair Cook, Nick Compton tons leads England fightback on Day 4 #EngvsNZ

Posted: 08 Mar 2013 10:32 PM PST

Alastair Cook, Nick Compton tons leads England fightback on Day 4Alastair Cook and Nick Compton made some amends for England’s poor first innings by grinding out a 231-run partnership to eat deep into New Zealand’s lead of 293 on the fourth day of the first test on Saturday.

Captain Cook was dismissed just before stumps for 116, leaving Compton to resume on the fifth and final day of the match on 102 not out along with nightwatchman Steven Finn, who had yet to score.

England ended the day on 234 for one, a deficit of just 59 runs, after applying themselves far more diligently than in their first innings, when they were bundled out for 167.

Cook and Compton’s obdurate stand on Saturday not only edged the visitors closer to safety but sent a message to New Zealand’s young pace attack that the rest of the three-match series would be much more of a test of their abilities.

Mindful they needed to bat time to at least save the test, both openers played cautiously and a potential run out when Compton was on 94 was the only chance in their record first wicket stand before Cook’s dismissal.

Cook and Compton’s effort bettered the 223 runs put on by Graeme Fowler and Chris Tavare in 1984 as the highest England opening partnership in a test against New Zealand.

Cook brought up his 24th test century with a paddle around the corner off Bruce Martin for his 13th boundary, prompting a standing ovation from the crowd.

Just as the partnership looked set to remain intact until the close of play, though, Trent Boult managed to catch the outside edge of Cook’s bat and the ball carried to wicketkeeper BJ Watling.

The dismissal did not unsettle Compton, who had been under pressure for his place in the side after failing to convert good starts on England’s recent tour of India.

The 29-year-old brought up his maiden test century two balls later with a push into the leg side for a single and emitted a roar of delight as he cantered down the wicket.

“The biggest relief of my life to be honest,” Compton told reporters. “To get to this moment was something special, I never thought perhaps a year ago, or a couple of months ago, that I’d be sitting here with a hundred.

“I kept believing, but its been a long time. I’m just delighted to be here. It’s a strange feeling.”

The patience that England showed had frustrated New Zealand’s bowlers, Boult said afterwards, though he also praised the pair for they way they held out, shaking hands with Compton in between post-match media conferences.

“It was frustrating not to grab a few more but that’s the way it goes,” Boult told reporters. “They were tough conditions. It was a flat wicket and cold with not much swing or any help from the wicket.

“They just batted well. They took it pretty simply, left the ball well.

“I thought we built pressure in periods, but let them off at times too. They were going at a relatively slow scoring rate.

“We just thought we had to build pressure. It was nice to get one wicket; a few more would’ve been good.”
