Mohammad Hafeez, Umar Gul thrash South Africa in 2nd T20 to take series 1-0 #PakvsSA

Posted: 03 Mar 2013 08:42 AM PST

Mohammad Hafeez, Umar Gul thrash South Africa in 2nd T20 to take series 1-0Captain Mohammad Hafeez and bowler Umar Gul put their test woes behind them as Pakistan beat South Africa by 95 runs on Sunday to win the two-match Twenty20 series 1-0.

Hafeez scored 86 off 65 balls to anchor a strong batting display at Centurion as Pakistan slammed the home side’s attack to all corners and finished with 195 for seven from their 20 overs.

Gul then took four wickets in a spell of seven balls to rip the heart out of South Africa’s response and condemn them to 100 all out – their lowest total in a T20 international.

The bowler, who along with Hafeez had been poor in the test series where South Africa completed a 3-0 whitewash, finished with figures of five wickets for six runs to match his best in Twenty20.

“Our mindset was clear, we had to be positive. We were eager to perform well because we didn’t have a good time in the test matches,” Hafeez said as he accepted the man-of-the-match award.

Hafeez produced a particularly aggressive innings, flaying the South African attack with four sixes as he became the first Pakistani past 1,000 runs in international T20 cricket.

He also took three wickets in South Africa’s reply but his contribution came after Gul, the leading wicket taker in T20 internationals, had decimated the home batting.

Gul took 4-4 in his first two-over spell as three of his victims fell first ball.

Opener Ahmed Shehzad also produced a noteworthy contribution with 46 runs, followed by two outstanding catches at third man.

Friday’s opening Twenty20 in Durban was rained off.

Pakistan and South Africa next play a five-match one-day international series, starting in Bloemfontein next Sunday.

Pakistan vs South Africa 2nd T20 Post Match Presentation 2013 #PakvsSA

Hafeez: ‘Credit goes to the coach for working hard with me in the nets. The mind-set was clear. We had to play positively. Jamshed and Shehzad started off well. It was that kind of a day when everything worked for me. I would like to thank the crowd for supporting us. This was a crucial game for us. Umar Gul bowled brilliantly in this match. It is a matter of showing character and the team was looking forward to the game. We wanted to win the game so that we could gain momentum into the ODI series.’

Mohammad Hafeez is the MoM for his knock of 86. He became the first Pakistan player to reach 1000 runs in T20Is.

Stat attack: Umar Gul is now the highest wicket-taker in T20Is.

Faf du Plessis: ‘The game did not go according to plan. Hafeez played a wonderful knock. There are a lot of areas where we can improve. We are used to being under pressure in T20Is. The bowlers bowled well in the last 5 overs but to score at 11 runs per over was always hard. It was a good wicket to bat on but a five wicket haul and an 80 plus knock changed the game completely. We saw how good Pakistan are in the T20Is.’

I wanted to stay at the wicket as long as possible, Murali Vijay #IndvsAus

Posted: 03 Mar 2013 06:50 AM PST

I wanted to stay at the wicket as long as possible, Murali VijayIndian opener Murali Vijay, who scored an unbeaten century against Australia in the second Test, said he just wanted to stay at the wicket as long as possible.

“It is always wonderful to get a good start for the team. A partnership like this doesn’t happen all the time. We really cherished it. Pujara played very well,” he told reporters after he, along with Cheteshwar Pujara, added 294 runs for the second wicket on the second day’s play at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Sunday.

Vijay was unbeaten on 129 while Pujara was not out on 162.

“The last Test hit me very hard because I gave away my wicket in the second innings. I just wanted to stay at the wicket as long as possible. So that was my intention. It doesn’t matter how the wicket is. I am happy that I gave a good start to the team,” said Vijay, who scored 10 and 6 in the Chennai Test.

The 28-year-old from Tamil Nadu admitted that there was pressure on him.

“I don’t take things from outside but I was thinking to come out of the mistakes I made in the first Test. I was just looking for this. I was preparing myself to fight out as long as possible. I wanted to stay and not give away my wicket.

“I don’t know about that but I am really happy at the moment for the performance,” he said when asked if his knock would help him stabilise his position in the team.

The Indian opener said it was a nice wicket to bat on if one hangs on. “It is not easy to score runs but it is getting better.

“The wicket is playing spin but it is not consistent. Some balls are coming and some balls are not. You’ve got to play. You can’t take any spinner easy on this wicket. We both batted well. We didn’t give enough chances,” he said when asked about the Australian spinners.

Murali Vijay, Cheteshwar Pujara unbeaten stand put India in commanding position in 2nd Test #IndvAus

Posted: 03 Mar 2013 04:28 AM PST

Murali Vijay, Cheteshwar Pujara unbeaten stand put India in commanding position in 2nd TestMurali Vijay and Cheteshwar Pujara hit unbeaten centuries to guide India to a commanding position on the second day of the second Test against Australia.

Cheteshwar Pujara reached the 150-run mark that helped India take their lead past 50 runs on the second day of the second Test against Australia.

Pujara scored his 150 off 230 balls with the help of 24 boundaries and a single six right after he and Murali Vijay scored tons to help India pass Australia’s first innings total of 237/9.

The duo put up a scintillating 280-plus run partnership for the second wicket that helped India cross the 300-run mark after play resumed in the final session.

Pujara reached his three-figure mark in 188 balls with 14 boundaries to his credit right after he and Vijay batted with purpose in the post-lunch session as India reached 160 for one at tea.

Vijay, who scored his second Test century, looked in full flow to assert his dominance as he slammed his ton with the help of 13 boundaries and a couple of sixes.

Having scored only 49 runs in the 27 overs bowled during the first session, the two Indian batsmen came out with a far more positive approach as they smashed 106 runs in 33 overs during the post lunch session.

If the first session was about consolidation, the second session was all about attacking the visiting team bowlers.

Both Pujara and Vijay hit a flurry of boundaries with Aussie bowlers suddenly dishing out pedestrian stuff from the disciplined and accurate bowling during the first session.

While Vijay hit 10 boundaries and a six, Pujara also matched him stroke for stroke hitting James Pattinson for three boundaries in one over.

If Vijay’s cover-driving was delightful to watch, Pujara standing tall and square cutting the rising deliveries outside the off-stump with a lot of ferocity.

Australia’s plan to play with left-arm spinner Xavier Doherty and IPL’s ‘Million Dollar Boy’ Glenn Maxwell didn’t work well.

Both the batsmen used their feet appreciably as the spinners failed to extract any turn and bounce. The pitch was also easy for batting.

While Vijay completed his half century off 141 balls with a big six off Doherty over long-off. Pujara’s 50 came off 114 balls.

For Vijay, this will be an important knock as it’s only his third Test half-century in 14 matches and might prove to be consequential in helping him cement his place in the squad.

Earlier, Peter Siddle got the only breakthrough of the first session removing an out-of-form Virender Sehwag. But the pace trio of Siddle, James Pattinson and all-rounder Moises Henriques kept things under control as India went into lunch at 54 for one.

Just 23 minutes into the second day, Sehwag was dismissed by Siddle with a rising delivery. The pacer hit three-quarter length and got the ball to rear up awkwardly and also moved a shade kissing the edge of Sehwag’s bat as Matthew Wade took the catch.

While the bowler wasn’t sure, Wade and the slip cordon were confident and umpire Kumar Dharmasena raised his finger after some deliberation. Sehwag managed only 6.

The sequence of scores for Sehwag in his last 6 Test innings read: 23, 49, 0, 2, 19 and 6.

A total of 99 runs in six Test innings at a dismal average of 16.50 and certainly doesn’t paint a bright picture about the veteran opener, who used to be a match-winner even 18 months back.

Dropping Lyon from Hyderabad Test a hasty decision : Greg Matthews #IndvAus

Posted: 02 Mar 2013 09:21 PM PST

Dropping Nathan Lyon from Hyderabad Test a hasty decision - Greg MatthewsFormer Test spinner Greg Matthews has said that that the Australian selectors had taken a hasty decision in dropping Nathan Lyon from the Australian squad for the second Test against India, in favour of left-arm spinner Xavier Doherty.

Expressing his hope that the selectors will show faith in Lyon and backing the off-spinner to force his way back into the national team, Matthews said that Lyon’s performance in the Chennai Test should have been taken as a deviation from his normal form, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

Stating that Lyon’s previous record should have been taken into account, Matthews said that the off-spinner, who had taken 65 wickets in 20 Tests, should have been given the opportunity to play in the Hyderabad Test, but added that the selectors had gone with two other options.

Matthews further said that Lyon has not yet reached his full potential, and given the opportunity, he can reach the top rungs in Australian cricket in the future.

Selectors dropped the off-spinner after Lyon had little impact in the Chennai massacre, taking three wickets for more than 200 runs in the first innings while India’s spinners wreaked havoc.

Off-spinning all-rounder Glenn Maxwell will share slow-bowling duties with Doherty, the Victorian receiving his maiden baggy green at the expense of left-arm quick Mitchell Starc, the report added. (ANI)

West Indies beat Zimbabwe by 8 wickets in 1st T20 #WIvsZim

Posted: 02 Mar 2013 08:00 PM PST

West Indies beat Zimbabwe by 8 wickets in 1st T20Lendl Simmons’ third half-century and an unbroken 85-run third-wicket partnership with Dwayne Bravo guided the West Indies to an eight-wicket win over Zimbabwe in first T20 international on Saturday.

Replying to Zimbabwe’s 130 for eight, the opening batsman smashed six sixes, the last ending the match at the start of the 17th over, in finishing on 63 not out and taking the man of the match award.

Bravo (38 not out) benefitted from a missed run out opportunity at the start of his innings to ensure that the early strikes of medium-fast bowler Chris Mpofu did not result in an upset win for the visitors.

“It was a clinical result because we did just what we wanted to do,” said West Indies captain Darren Sammy, acknowledging that his team wanted to make a statement in their first home T20 match since lifting the world title last October in Sri Lanka.

Mpofu trapped Johnson Charles leg-before after the opener had taken five consecutive fours off fellow opening bowler Kyle Jarvis and then removed Darren Bravo without scoring to a miscued pull off a short ball.

Dwayne Bravo should have been run out shortly after but Zimbabwe captain Brendan Taylor failed to hold on to a return with the all-rounder short of his ground.

Earlier, Malcolm Waller fell one run short of a maiden T20 half-century and fast bowler Tino Best claimed three wickets to limit Zimbabwe.

Waller and Craig Ervine put on 60 for the fourth wicket, a new Zimbabwe T20 record, after Best had made early inroads, removing the opening pair of Vusi Sibanda and Hamilton Masakadza.

Taylor, who once again called correctly at the toss and chose to take first strike, continued his poor run on the tour with the bat, falling without scoring to a catch at the wicket off Samuel Badree.

“It’s really frustrating that our top three batters aren’t giving us good starts, but despite that, I thought Waller and Ervine played really well,” said a downcast Taylor.

Sunil Narine again proved a challenge for the tourists with his spin variations, claiming two wickets for 17 runs while Dwayne Bravo, who captained the West Indies to a 3-0 sweep of the one-day international series, took two wickets off the final over of the innings, both to catches by Andre Russell on the midwicket boundary

The second and final match of the Twenty20 series takes place at the same Sir Vivian Richards Stadium on Sunday.
