Gautam Gambhir likely to miss few matches of IPL 6 #IPL6

Posted: 20 Mar 2013 06:38 AM PDT

Gautam Gambhir likely to miss few matches of IPL 6Defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders might miss the services of their captain Gautam Gambhir as the senior opener is down with jaundice.

Gambhir, who was in contention to replace an injured Shikhar Dhawan in the fourth Test against Australia, underwent a few blood tests and jaundice was detected ruling him out of the match starting on Friday.

As of now, he might require rest for a period of three weeks in order to get back in action.

There is a possibility that South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis or New Zealand’s wicketkeeper-batsman Brendon McCullum might lead KKR in Gambhir’s absence.

McCullum has already had an experience of leading KKR during the disastrous second edition in South Africa where they finished at the bottom of the heap.

But Kallis, if fit and available, will be the seniormost player and someone who is respected in the KKR ranks.

So, Kallis seems to be the favourite to lead the side if Gambhir misses the first few matches of the IPL.

Gambhir last played a competitive match against Punjab in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Twenty20 Tournament where he made an unbeaten 68 in 54 balls to leave a successful chase.

The possibility of KKR having an overseas skipper is due to the fact that there aren’t too many Indian players of stature who can replace Gambhir.

Ricky Ponting, Michael Hussey rules out Ashes return

Ricky Ponting, Michael Hussey rules out Ashes returnRicky Ponting and Mike Hussey Wednesday ruled out shock comebacks to the Australian Test ranks for the Ashes tour of England after the team’s troubled series in India.

With Australia 3-0 down in India and the first of back-to-back Ashes series rapidly approaching, coach Mickey Arthur has indicated he would be open to Hussey returning to the national set-up.

But the 37-year-old, who bowed out of Test cricket in January, said while he was flattered to be considered, he had retired from the international game.

“It’s extremely flattering,” said the 79-Test veteran, who has been in fine form for Western Australia in the domestic Sheffield Shield.

“But I’ve moved on and I really don’t want to be back in that pressure-cooker environment, particularly leading into the Ashes.

“It’s going to be an extremely stressful time for all the boys. I’m really looking forward to having a winter at home and just having some time with the family and being part of some normal life.”

On top of trailing the series in India, there has been massive upheaval in the team with the suspensions of Shane Watson, James Pattinson, Usman Khawaja and Mitchell Johnson for indiscipline.

Vice-captain Watson has returned to the fold after being axed for one Test but skipper Michael Clarke remains short of experience leading into the Ashes, having leaned heavily on Ponting until he called it quits last December.

Like Hussey, Ponting has been in sparkling form since quitting international cricket in December after 17 years and 168 Tests and was Wednesday named the Sheffield Shield player of the year.

But the 38-year-old also ruled out a return to the Australian team.

“International cricket’s long passed me by,” he said in his Sheffield Shield acceptance speech.

Hussey suggested Twenty20 captain George Bailey could be a good addition to the Test team for the Ashes.

“He’s done well in the one-day arena for Australia and he knows his game pretty well,” Hussey told reporters.

“He’s played a lot of first-class cricket, and having that understanding of your own game is really important when you come into the pressure-cooker situation of a Test match.”

Two editions of the Ashes series against Australia are being played back-to-back this year to avoid a clash with the 2015 World Cup, with the first beginning on July 10.

Mickey Arthur says doors open for Michael Hussey comeback from retirement

Mickey Arthur says doors open for Michael Hussey comeback from retirementAustralia coach Mickey Arthur has said they would welcome back Michael Hussey in the Test squad if the veteran decides to make a comeback following his retirement from the longest format of the game last year.

The 37-year-old, retired, absent and sorely missed from the Australian team since the Sydney Test against Sri Lanka in the first week of January, would be welcomed back into the Test side if he answered an SOS to bat middle-order for the Ashes, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

Arthur said they would certainly listen to Hussey if he came knocking at their door, and whether the old hand, who remains in good form at domestic level, takes up the offer remains to be seen.

Meanwhile, Hussey last week brushed off questioning about whether he would consider coming to the aid of the Australian team in India if asked by captain Michael Clarke, saying he doesn’t don’t think so.

Whether he could be convinced for a one-off comeback mission in the Ashes, though, will be the source of more intrigue given Arthur’s comment on Tuesday, the paper reported.

Certainly, Hussey is still good enough. In his final Test summer, in which he made a shock retirement announcement, he scored three centuries, two against South Africa and one against Sri Lanka, leaving the international arena at the top of his game, the paper said.

In his last two Sheffield Shield matches for Western Australia, Hussey peeled off an unbeaten 99 and 96.

Arthur concedes the beleaguered Australian team dearly misses Hussey and ex-captain Ricky Ponting, but said faith must be retained in the next generation.

Arthur said he is confident of his young players, saying they are not the finished product yet but they are indeed the future of Australian cricket.

Wasim Akram willing to assist Pakistan pace bowlers

Posted: 19 Mar 2013 11:53 PM PDT

Wasim Akram willing to assist Pakistan pace bowlersPakistan pace legend and former captain Wasim Akram wants to play a role in helping the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) resolve, what he calls “crisis” in the fast bowling department.

Wasim said he was willing to not only help the PCB in any venture but would also launch his own talent hunt scheme to unearth raw pace talent and then groom them in a specialised camp in April.

“I want to see Pakistan at the top of the cricket world and the recent performance in the Test series in South Africa has been very disappointing for me. I strongly believe we can still find exciting new pace talent in the country,” Wasim said.

A debate has been raging in Pakistan cricket after chief selector Iqbal Qasim last week warned that the country could face a pace bowling crisis.

But Wasim, who dominated Pakistan cricket in the 90s and until his retirement in 2003 in both the Test and one-day formats taking 414 and 502 wickets respectively, said the situation could be rectified.

“Pakistan has always produced exciting and raw pace talent from nowhere and I am pretty sure I can find 10 to 12 such bowlers in the country after a proper hunt,” he said.

“In whatever way whether individually or by helping the board I am confident the pace crisis can be overcome.”

Wasim said he would hold a two-week training camp for pacers in April.

Pakistan has always had a proud history of producing world-class pace bowlers including Fazal Mehmood, Sarfraz Nawaz, Imran Khan, Wasim, Waqar Younis, Shoaib Akhtar and more recently Mohammad Asif but have in recent years struggled in this department specially on the ongoing tour of South Africa.

Their most experienced pacer, Umar Gul, took just five wickets in two Tests against South Africa at an average of around 45 and the selectors had to test six different pacers in the series in which Pakistan was whitewashed 0-3.

Even Pakistan Test captain Misbah-ul-Haq has expressed concern over the absence of pacers in the team who are keen to bowl with the new ball.

Wasim said that not having a chance to play international cricket at home has affected the growth of young pacers here.

“I learnt the tricks of the trade mainly getting exposure against international teams at home. It is ideal for the young pacers to first be groomed in international cricket on home grounds unfortunately this is not been happening in Pakistan.”

No Test team has toured Pakistan since March, 2009 because of security concerns after terrorists attacked the Sri Lankan team in Lahore.

Wasim also felt that the Pakistani bowlers were not focusing enough on Test cricket.

“For a pace bowler it is very important to play maximum Test matches and he will improve a lot because the real Test in cricket is Test matches. If you are successful in tests you can do well in the other formats as well,” he said.

Interestingly no Pakistani pacer features in the current ICC top-10 Test and ODI bowling rankings.
