South Africa beat Pakistan in high scoring 3rd ODI to lead 2-1 #PakvsSA

Posted: 17 Mar 2013 10:21 AM PDT

South Africa beat Pakistan in high scoring 3rd ODI to lead 2-1Centuries by Hashim Amla and AB de Villiers set up a 34-run victory for South Africa despite a thrilling innings by Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi in the third one-day international at the Wanderers Stadium on Sunday.

Amla (122) and De Villiers (128) shared a world record third wicket partnership of 238 as South Africa made 343 for five after being sent in.

Pakistan, who were bowled out for 309 to slip 2-1 down in the series, had been in deep trouble when Afridi walked in at 132 for five but he gave his side hope as he thrashed 88 off 48 balls with seven sixes and five fours.

Afridi’s innings included some of the biggest sixes seen at the Wanderers.

One, after he had been bowled off a no-ball, was a mighty hit onto the roof of the four-tier Centenary stand which was last seen bouncing towards an adjacent golf course.

Afridi was yorked by Ryan McLaren when he had 73 but a check requested by umpire Billy Bowden showed the bowler had over-stepped.

McLaren then bowled a wide, which meant Afridi still had a free hit to which he committed all his power.

There was one more six before he hit a full toss from Lonwabo Tsotsobe to McLaren at long-off.

There was still a possibility of a reprieve as the umpires checked whether the full toss was above waist height, which would have meant another no-ball, before confirming the dismissal.

Amla and De Villiers batted superbly after South Africa struggled early on, with left-arm fast bowler Mohammad Irfan taking two early wickets.

They beat by one run the previous one-day international third wicket record set by Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar for India against Kenya in 1999, to ensure that Pakistan would have a challenging run chase on a ground renowned for high scoring.

De Villiers was quickly into his stride and the pair posted a fifty partnership off 38 balls.

The rate slowed slightly when Pakistan brought their spin bowlers into action.

After 35 overs the total was 115 but the runs came in a torrent towards the end of the innings. The last 15 overs yielded 156 runs.

Amla reached his 11th one-day international century off 99 balls, while De Villiers went to his 14th century in the format off 87 deliveries.

Amla was caught at cover for 122 off 113 balls with nine fours and a six and De Villiers was held at deep midwicket for 128 off 108 deliveries, with 12 fours and three sixes.

Pakistan were briefly reduced to 10 men after Irfan, who had been a doubtful starter because of a hamstring strain, left the field for treatment.

He was replaced by Umar Akmal but after 20 minutes the umpires informed Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq that the maximum 20 minutes allowed for treatment had expired. Pakistan had a fielder short for two overs before Irfan returned.

Wahab Riaz conceded 93 runs in his 10 overs — the most by a Pakistan bowler in one-day internationals. He took two wickets.

Man of the Match is shared between Hashim Amla and AB de Villiers for the world record third wicket stand. Amla says, ‘It was great to bat with AB, we loved the time at the centre. The first ten overs were quite difficult, we didn’t think we would get to the total that we eventually got to. Faf accelerated at the right time, we managed to set it up nicely, AB was amazing again, I think he’s got a new MCC manual with his shots. Always great to bat with him. The track flattened out after the first ten overs and it suddenly changed course and unfortunately the bowlers had to pay a huge penalty. 2-1 up now, hopefully we can carry forward the momentum.’

AB de Villiers: ‘Very proud of the way the boys performed, amazing crowd, amazing support, we just have to be consistent in future. It’s a great pink initiative today, we are happy that we won the game hopefully that will help raise a lot of funds. Hashim Amla was brilliant again, he made things easier for me by taking the pressure off initially. We were worried when Afridi was going berserk, we managed to regroup in the break and pick ourselves up. Rory and Ryan bowled well, they pulled it back. Looking forward to Durban and we’ll hope we can play some consistent cricket.’

Misbah-ul-Haq: ‘I am really pleased with the way the team performed, we were good but just could not hang on to important moments. We lost three overs off Mohammad Irfan, it happens in the game, we’ll have to find a way to get out of it. Shahid Afridi played tremendously, huge hits, excellent timing, I was confident that he can score a hundred, it was absolutely amazing to watch but unfortunately we couldn’t pull it off. The new rules make things difficult for teams when the opposition batsmen are well set with nothing for the bowlers from the pitch. We have a lot of positives from this game, would just love to improve on our fielding and if the batsmen drop anchor it will help us in the future.’

Bhuvneshwar Kumar tripple strike gave India control at stumps on Day 4 #IndvsAus

Bhuvneshwar Kumar tripple strike gave India control at stumps on Day 4Murali Vijay (153) cracked his second successive century before young paceman Bhuvneshwar Kumar quickly snapped up three Australian wickets to raise hopes of an Indian victory in the third Test which seemed headed for an exciting finish.

After conceding a 91-run first innings lead, the visitors were struggling at 75 for three at stumps, on the penultimate day with Bhuvneshwar producing a brilliant spell to remove openers David Warner (2), Ed Cowan (8) and Steven Smith (5), who was promoted ahead of injured captain Michael Clarke.

At stumps, Phillip Hughes (53 batting) is fighting hard in company of nightwatchman Nathan Lyon (4).

The stage is now set for an engrossing fifth day’s play on a deteriorating track as India will try to dismissing seven remaining Aussie batsmen and keep the target within manageable limit with 98 overs permissible.

India lead the series 2-0 after convincing wins in Chennai and Hyderabad, and seemed to be on course to clinch the series despite Peter Siddle’s five-for, which helped Australia bowl out the hosts for 499.

Woefully out-of-form prior to this innings, Hughes struck nine fours and a six during his crucial knock. Bhuvneshwar’s figures were an impressive three for 25.

The UP seamer had Warner caught behind in the first over, though much of the ‘credit’ must go to the batsman who played an irresponsible shot to an away-going delivery.

Bhuvneshwar then had Cowan trapped in-front but this time he was a bit lucky as the ball had pitched outside leg and the batsman had made a big stride forward.

There was no doubt as far as his third wicket was concerned as Bhuvneshwar produced a beauty that held its line before knocking over Smith’s off-stump.

Resuming on a strong 283 for no loss, India were bundled out for the addition of just 216 runs, as Siddle returned with impressive figures of five for 71.
