Colin Ingram, bowlers thrash Pakistan by 125 runs in 1st ODI #SAvPak

Posted: 10 Mar 2013 09:50 AM PDT

Ingram, bowlers thrash Pakistan by 125 runs in 1st ODIColin Ingram hit an unbeaten century to set up a comfortable 125-run win for South Africa in the first one-day international against Pakistan at Chevrolet Park on Sunday.

The left-handed Ingram made 105 not out as South Africa piled up 315 for four after being sent in to bat. Pakistan could only make 190 in reply.
South African captain AB de Villiers described the win as “a huge step in the right direction” after what he admitted had been “worrying and frustrating” recent one-day performances by the team.

Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq said his side had been unable to exploit helpful bowling conditions early on.

Misbah said an opening partnership of 72 by Graeme Smith and Hashim Amla had set up the South African innings.

“The way the ball was seaming, they played really well. We were looking to get early wickets. If South Africa had scored 270 or 280 it could have been a good game,” he said.

Ingram made his runs off 103 balls with ten fours. It was his third one-day international century and his second against Pakistan.

He shared partnerships of 120 for the third wicket with captain AB de Villiers (65), 62 for the fourth wicket with Faf du Plessis (26) and 50 off only 23 balls with Farhaan Behardien, who hammered 34 not out off 14 deliveries.

Smith and Amla set an aggressive tone with their opening partnership stand, with both batsmen going for their shots against Junaid Khan and Umar Gul despite the Pakistan new ball bowlers getting some early assistance from the pitch.

The South Africans opted for the batting power play immediately after the compulsory first ten overs but lost Smith when he gloved an attempted reverse sweep to be caught behind off Saeed Ajmal, one of four spin bowlers in the six-man bowling attack, for 30.

Amla made 43 before he was caught at deep square leg off Mohammad Hafeez.

De Villiers and Ingram then set South Africa on the way to a big total with a run-a-ball stand during which they kept the score moving quickly against the Pakistan spin bowlers with deft placement and good running between wickets.

Pakistan made a bright start with Mohammad Hafeez and Nasir Jamshed putting on 42 for the first wicket off 43 balls before they suffered a double blow.

Jamshed was caught at slip by Graeme Smith off Rory Kleinveldt for 25 and Hafeez fell for the same score in unlucky fashion when a drive by Younis Khan was deflected by bowler Kleinveldt into the stumps for Hafeez to be run out.

Asad Shafiq fell cheaply and Pakistan were unable to build substantial partnerships with captain Misbah-ul-Haq top-scoring with 38.

Shahid Afridi hit 34 off 16 balls before he was last man out but his innings was never likely to alter the outcome. Afridi hit three sixes, including a massive strike which sailed out of the ground and into a car park.

Kleinveldt, whose first two balls were hit for four, came back strongly to finish with four for 22 in 5.2 overs, while Ryan McLaren took three for 19.

The win gave South Africa a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. The second match will be in Centurion on Friday.

De Villiers said South Africa would be looking to build on Sunday’s result. “We want to get consistency and we?ve got the momentum now.”

Misbah said Pakistan need to work on their “death” bowling and fielding. “We need to cut down 30 or 40 runs (by the opposition),” he said.

Colin Ingram:‘ I have enjoyed it. Glad to be contributing. I suppose it worked out well. Hopefully I can carry on like this. I just enjoyed batting with some of the other guys. We ran well between the wickets and the partnership ticked along. Magical knock from Behardien.’

Colin Ingram is the Man of the Match

AB de Villers: ‘ Very proud of the boys. The Pakistan bowlers were bowling well up front. Credit to Hashim and Smith who batted well. Colin played a great knock and congrats to him. We hadn’t played good ODI cricket lately and were looking forward to this game. This win is a huge step in a good direction. I was very proud of the way the bowlers bowled. Picking wickets at regular intervals was important and Pakistan could never get going. Kleinveldt is a very mature performer and knows his game inside out. McLaren is playing on his home ground and thanks to the crowd for coming out in droves to support him. Really looking forward to playing in front of my home-crowd in the next match.’

Misbah-Ul-Haq: ‘ I think the way the ball was moving, 270-280 could have been chaseable. We could not exploit the conditions well. The wicket became easier for batting. The first 10-15 overs were crucial and they did well to not lose wickets. I think we need to work a bit on our death bowling and fielding. We bowled too many boundary balls. If we could have saved 30-40 runs, we could have chased it down.’

Mohammad Ashraful, Mushfiqur Rahim record partnership boost Bangladesh on Day 3 #BanvSL

Mohammad Ashraful, Mushfiqur Rahim record partnership boost Bangladesh on Day 3Mohammad Ashraful and Mushfiqur Rahim smashed impressive centuries in a record stand as Bangladesh dominated the third day of the opening Test against Sri Lanka in Galle on Sunday.

Ashraful hit an unbeaten 189 not out, the highest by a Bangladeshi in Tests, on his comeback and Rahim made a career-best 152 not out as the tourists posted 438-4 in their first innings at stumps in reply to Sri Lanka’s 570-4 declared.

Their 261-run unbroken stand was Bangladesh’s highest for any wicket in Tests, the previous best being 200 for the second wicket between Tamim Iqbal and Junaid Siddique against India in Dhaka in 2010.

Bangladesh also surpassed their previous highest total of 413 against Sri Lanka in Tests.

The tourists, who avoided the follow-on in the final session, now trail by 132 runs with six wickets in hand.

The 28-year-old Ashraful, who played his last Test in December 2011, hit one six and 20 fours in his sixth Test hundred, and the fifth against Sri Lanka, while Rahim, 24, smashed one six and 18 fours in his second Test century.

It was a frustrating day for Sri Lanka as none of their bowlers could keep up pressure on Ashraful and wicketkeeper-batsman Rahim on a good batting pitch. The hosts went wicketless after striking twice in the opening 11 overs.

Bangladesh added 303 to their overnight total of 135-2 for the loss of just two wickets.

Ashraful, 65 overnight, completed his century with an aggressive shot when he firmly drove unorthodox spinner Ajantha Mendis through the covers for a four in the morning.

Rahim also played some handsome shots during his big innings and reached his hundred in the last session when he swept Mendis for a four.

Debutant Mominul Haque also impressed, scoring an 83-ball 55 with nine fours. He added 105 for the third wicket with Ashraful before being caught at first slip by skipper Angelo Mathews off paceman Nuwan Kulasekara.

The left-hander added 20 runs to his overnight score of 35.

Sri Lanka struck again when left-arm spinner Rangana Herath had Mohammad Mahmudullah stumped for no score to reduce Bangladesh to 177-4 before Ashraful and Rahim propped up the innings.

South Africa after topping the test list will be looking for improvement in limited over cricket in the five match ODI series against Pakistan. The series can also be said as a preparation for Champions Trophy coming later in the year. South Africa have to work on the right team composition. Proteas have been experimenting a lot with the ODI squad compare to the Test squad and so far they haven’t found a winning combination in the format. Proteas Skipper AB de Villiers has been finalized as permanent wicket-keeper and will also strengthen the middle order. Graeme Smith and Hashim Amla starts the proceedings. Dale Steyn is rested for the first ODI which can be said a relief for the visitors. Morne Morkel is also doubtful for the first ODI.

Pakistan have a string batting and bowling unit and have been performing well in the limited over cricket. They won their last ODI series against India in India. Mohammad Hafeez came back in form in the last T20 which is a positive sign for the team. Shahid Afridi and Shoaib Malik will strengthen the middle order. In the bowling too Umar Gul 5 wicket haul in the last T20 clearly tell how threatening he can be. Pakistan are likely to go Umar Gul, Junaid Khan and Mohammad Irfan as the specialist seamers for the first ODI along with the magician Saeed Ajmal.

New Zealand vs England 1st Test ends in a draw #EngvNZ

Posted: 09 Mar 2013 09:30 PM PST

New Zealand vs England 1st Test ends in a drawNew Zealand’s hopes of winning the first Test against England were dashed by the bulldog spirit of nightwatchman Steven Finn who batted almost six hours to steer the match to a draw on Sunday. No.8-ranked New Zealand had the better of No.2-ranked England through most of a match and still had hopes of victory when it led by 59 at the start of the final day.

But Finn, unheralded as a batsmen, started before stumps on the fourth day and batted until after tea on Sunday to dull New Zealand’s thrust for victory, reaching his first half century in Tests or first class cricket. England was 431 for 6 when stumps were drawn, leading by 128 with Ian Bell 26 and Matt Prior 23.

While England’s fightback, after trailing by 293 runs on first innings, was set up by openers Alastair Cook and Nick Compton who both made centuries, it was Finn who sealed the draw. He came to the wicket when Cook was dismissed for 116 late on day four and batted resolutely, almost chancelessly, into the match’s final session. When he was out and England lost the wicket of Joe Root for a duck soon afterwards, New Zealand’s hopes rose briefly.

But Bell and Prior batted England on to a lead of 128 and when drinks were taken in the final session, New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum shook hands and accepted the draw. The second Test starts at Wellington on Thursday.

“From the moment we stepped onto the field to the moment we stepped off it we showed the heart and the characteristics we want to be known for,” McCullum said.

“There were some outstanding debuts. Hamish Rutherford’s 171 on debut was something not just he but everyone at the ground will remember for a long time. And Bruce Martin as well bowled well.

“The bowlers’ effort over the last two days was phenomenal. They just kept coming in hard and kept trying and we never gave up the belief that we’d be able to get the job done.”

Finn defied that belief. He formed partnerships of 34 for the second wicket with Nick Compton, who was out for 117, then 90 for the third wicket with Jonathan Trott, who was dismissed in the second session for 52. Kevin Pietersen, looking out of form, was out for 12 as New Zealand’s bowlers battled hard in unhelpful conditions.

Finn had occupied the crease for almost six hours by tea. He eclipsed his previous best Test score of 19 and posted his first half century in either Test or first class cricket, not with alacrity but with hard-nosed defiance of the New Zealand attack.

Trott beat Finn to 50, posting his 14th half century in Tests in 101 minutes from 78 balls with 8 fours, reaching the mark with a firm shot through mid-wicket. Finn proceeded his more memorable milestone in 4 hours, 23 minutes, from 142 balls and with his fifth boundary, an edge through slips.

Tall, with a long reach, he got well forward and met straight deliveries with the full face of his bat. He coped just as well with shorter deliveries which climbed without any real venom, swaying or ducking away and occasionally putting a wider ball away for runs.

Trott was undone by one of the few deliveries that bounced unexpectedly, sparring a return catch to Neil Wagner who worked hard and claimed all three wickets to fall before tea.

Wagner first had Compton lbw for 117, removed Trott with a ball which reared from just short of a length, then had Pietersen (12) caught by wicketkeeper BJ Watling. England was able to build on the foundation laid by the centuries of Cook and Compton as it erased the 293-run first-innings lead.

Compton – grandson of the great Denis Compton – built only a little on his maiden century, taking his score on to 117 before being trapped lbw by Wagner.

Wagner bowled an exceptional 43 overs in England’s second innings and finished with 3 for 141.

MS Dhoni behind Virender Sehwag exclusion, says Sourav Ganguly #IndvsAus

Posted: 09 Mar 2013 09:08 PM PST

MS Dhoni behind Virender Sehwag exclusion, says Sourav GangulyExpressing surprise over the dropping of dashing India opener Virender Sehwag, former captain Sourav Ganguly Saturday said current team skipper MS Dhoni had a hand in the exclusion.

“It would be wrong to assume that there are no inputs from Dhoni in selection matters. If a captain asks for a particular player it is difficult for the selectors to say no. So I believe there were inputs from Dhoni even if he may not attend selection meetings,” said Ganguly.

“I am very surprised at his exclusion. If Sachin (Tendulkar) and Dhoni who have been struggling with their respective forms can be persisted with, then what’s wrong with Sehwag,” he asked.

Describing Sehwag as one of the all-time Test cricket greats, Ganguly said team India will miss his presence.

“He has completely changed the grammar of Test match opening. The sheer number of runs and the manner in which he has scored them, India will miss his presence. His impact in the game is comparable only to greats like Sachin, (Rahul) Dravid and (Sunil) Gavaskar,” he said.

The southpaw also refused to read much into the India’s consecutive Test match wins against Australia in the ongoing four match home series.

“People have a very short memory. I am amazed at some people lauding team India’s recent efforts. They seem to have forgotten that we were badly drubbed in 10 out of 13 test matches we last played,” he added.

Sehwag was dropped on Thursday from the squad for the last two Tests against Australia, after failing to perform and impress the selectors.

England vs New Zealand 1st T20 Post Match Presentation 2013 #EngvNZ

Posted: 09 Mar 2013 08:48 PM PST

Alastair Cook: ‘It has been a good fightback from the team. However, I am confounded as to why we start so badly in a Test on a tour. Compton scoring a ton was special and I was pleasently surprised by the performance of Finn with the bat. Pietersen is fit and he will play the second Test at Wellington.’

Brendon McCullum: ‘From the moment we stepped on the field and the moment we stepped off, we showed our character. Rutherford had a special match and everybody will remember his knock for a long time. We just could not finish the job. An extra day of Test cricket would have been great. It was a good game for us and we showed some positive signs. The bowlers will be given some rest ahead of Wellington. Wagner and Martin were superb with the ball.’
