Pakistan vs Sri Lanka, 1st T20, 01 June 2012: Match Preview

Posted: 31 May 2012 12:25 PM PDT

Hosts Sri Lanka will swing into ICC World Twenty20 mood as they take on Pakistan in a two-match international series with both teams looking to move up the ICC T20 Championship table. Sri Lanka, who will host ICC World Twenty20, need to win the series 2-0 if they are to move up from third place in the ICC T20 Championship table. The two teams will also be keen to get some good match practice ahead of the World Twenty20 to be held from September 18 to October 7 in Colombo, Pallekele and Hambantota later this year.

Mahela Jayawardene’s side has the opportunity to rise to second in the table, and usurp South Africa who currently occupy second place, if the 2-0 scenario occurs.

Sri Lanka’s ratings points would rise to 124, while Pakistan’s would drop to 107 and put the latter in seventh place just above India when the points are calculated to within the decimal point.

If Pakistan, the ICC World Twenty20 2009 champions, beat Sri Lanka 2-0 in the series, then newly appointed Twenty20 captain Mohammad Hafeez would see his side move up to fourth, one ratings point behind New Zealand.

Should Sri Lanka lose the series 2-0, they would see the ICC World Twenty20 2009 runners-up drop to sixth in the Championship table, just below Australia when the points are calculated to within the decimal point.

If both matches are tied, neither side will move up or down the table, while if one match is tied and Sri Lanka win the other match, Pakistan will drop to sixth in the table after losing two ratings points.

If the scenario is reversed and Pakistan win one match, while the other is tied, this visitors will remain fifth, while hosts Sri Lanka will drop to fourth in the table.

Meanwhile, in the ICC Player Rankings for T20 batsmen there is plenty of opportunity for movement from the players on both sides. Sri Lanka captain Jayawardene is the highest ranked batsman involved in the series, currently fifth, while compatriots Tillakaratne Dilshan (sixth) and Kumar Sangakkara (eighth) are not far behind the diminutive batsman.

Further down the table, Pakistan’s Umar Akmal (15th) and allrounders Shahid Afridi (24th) and Hafeez (27th) have a chance to rise up the rankings table which is currently topped by England’s Kevin Pietersen.

The ICC Player Rankings for T20 bowlers is currently topped by England’s Graeme Swann. Sri Lanka’s Ajantha Mendis is currently in second, but with the spinner not involved in the series it gives Pakistan’s Saeed Ajmal, currently third, a perfect opportunity to overtake the Sri Lanka bowler.

Pakistan’s bowlers dominate the top ten of the table, with Saeed (third), Afridi (fifth) and Hafeez (seventh). The highest ranked Sri Lankans involved in the series are Nuwan Kulasekara (26th) and Angelo Mathews (36th) and both will want to ensure the wickets tumble not only to improve their rankings but also to ensure they are fully prepared for the ICC World Twenty20 Sri Lanka 2012.

Finally, in the ICC Player Rankings for T20 allrounders, Australia’s Shane Watson holds the top spot with 438 ratings points but Pakistan’s Afridi is not far behind him with 413 points, while Pakistan captain Hafeez is in fourth and could leapfrog Australia’s David Hussey who currently occupies third position.

Sri Lanka’s Dilshan is the highest ranked allrounder for the hosts in fifth while Angelo Mathews occupies the ninth place and the duo need strong performances in this series to push for a place in the top four.

Teams:
Sri Lanka (From): Mahela Jayawardene(c), Dinesh Chandimal(w), Tillakaratne Dilshan, Chamara Kapugedera, Nuwan Kulasekara, Kaushal Lokuarachchi, Lasith Malinga, Angelo Mathews, Thissara Perera, Kumar Sangakkara, Sachithra Senanayake, Upul Tharanga, Lahiru Thirimanne, Isuru Udana

Pakistan (From): Mohammad Hafeez(c), Ahmed Shehzad, Hammad Azam, Haris Sohail, Khalid Latif, Mohammad Sami, Raza Hasan, Saeed Ajmal, Shahid Afridi, Shakeel Ansar(w), Shoaib Malik, Sohail Tanvir, Umar Akmal, Yasir Arafat, Nasir Jamshed

du Plessis, Morris named in SA T20 squad for Zimbabwe, Bangladesh series

Posted: 31 May 2012 02:40 AM PDT

The allrounders Faf du Plessis and Chris Morris have been called up to a 15-member squad for the unofficial Twenty20 series against Zimbabwe and Bangladesh next month. Johan Botha will lead the squad in the absence of AB de Villiers who is one of four players being rested, along with Jacques Kallis, Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel, all of whom featured extensively in the recently concluded IPL.

The inclusion of du Plessis, who has already played 21 ODIs for South Africa, was on expected lines after his stand-out performances for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL. He scored 398 runs at 33.16 from 12 innings – the second highest for CSK – with three fifties, and was briefly the holder of the orange cap for most runs scored in the competition. du Plessis eventually finished 13th on the IPL 5 run chart and was sidelined with the return of Australian batsman Michael Hussey from national duty.

“Du Plessis has been a stand-out performer for the Chennai Super Kings at the IPL and well deserves his T20 call-up. He has given us exciting, extra options by demonstrating his ability both at the top of the order and in the middle order,” Cricket SA (CSA) selection convener Andrew Hudson said on Wednesday after naming the squad.

Morris was the leading wicket-taker in last season’s domestic T20 Challenge, with 21 scalps at an average of 12.6, and was also effective as a lower-order hitter with a batting strike rate of 200. “Morris’ selection continues our policy of creating international opportunities for those who perform outstandingly well at franchise level and this certainly applies in his case,” said Hudson.

There were also recalls for Farhaan Behardien and Dane Vilas. “The four players concerned have turned out in virtually all their games for their franchises during the Indian Premier League,” said Hudson. “In addition they are involved in all three international formats for the Proteas and this is the last chance to rest them until the end of the ICC World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka in September and October.

SA Twenty20 squad: Johan Botha (captain), Hashim Amla, Farhaan Behardien, Marchant de Lange, JP Duminy, Faf du Plessis, Colin Ingram, Richard Levi, Albie Morkel, Chris Morris, Justin Ontong, Wayne Parnell, Robin Peterson, Lonwabo Tsotsobe, Dane Vilas.

Sunil Narine replaces injured Roach for England tour

Posted: 31 May 2012 02:15 AM PDT

West Indies fast bowler Kemar Roach has been ruled out of the remainder of the England tour with shin muscle soreness, the West Indies Cricket Board said in a statement on Wednesday.

Sunil Narine, who impressed one and all in Kolkata Knight Riders’ triumph in the Indian Premier League season five, will take his place.

“Kemar has been carrying this soreness for the last two matches, and in view of our upcoming schedule, we would like him to have the time to recover and prevent the onset of more serious injury,” West Indies team physiotherapist CJ Clark said.

West Indies trail the three-Test series 2-0 after losing the second match by nine wickets at Trent Bridge on Monday.

Roach, who took six wickets in the first Test and two at Trent Bridge, is the second member of the West Indies pace attack to return home after Shannon Gabriel suffered a back injury on his debut at Lord’s.

“We still have an awful lot of cricket to play this year and we did not want to risk losing as valuable a player as Kemar for a long period,” said West Indies coach Ottis Gibson.

“He has been outstanding with the ball for us so far this year and we are all gutted by his departure.” The third Test starts at Edgbaston on June 7. England and West Indies then play three one-day internationals and one Twenty20 match.

Wasim Akram upbeat on reviving India-Pakistan cricketing ties

Posted: 30 May 2012 12:47 AM PDT

Famed paceman Wasim Akram was upbeat on Tuesday about growing signs that India and Pakistan are to resume cricketing ties, nearly four years after they were suspended following the 2008 terror attacks on Mumbai.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Zaka Ashraf is in India negotiating a revival of matches after watching the Indian Premier League (IPL) final.

India has also allowed the Sialkot Stallions to take part in October’s Champions League, the first such participation by a Pakistani team since 2008.

Wasim, who as bowling coach helped Kolkata Knight Riders win their maiden IPL title on Sunday, said there were signs of a thaw.

“I acted as an ambassador for Pakistan as everyone knows me and during my stay I have seen that people want Indo-Pak cricket to start and for me the invitation for Sialkot is the first step,” Wasim told AFP.

Pakistani players featured in the inaugural IPL in 2008 and Sialkot was due to participate in the first Champions League the same year, until the Mumbai attacks saw cricket ties suspended.

Wasim, 45, expressed his hope that the doors to the IPL will open for Pakistani cricketers next year.

“Pakistani players Shahid Afridi, Umar Gul, Umar Akmal and Mohammad Hafeez are popular in India and Indian fans have realised they can add to the charm of the league,” said Wasim, who played 104 Tests and 352 one-day internationals for Pakistan.

Wasim added that India not playing Pakistan was a great setback for the millions of spectators in both countries.

“I am a great advocate of Indo-Pak cricket and I hope all the issues between the two countries are solved so that millions of fans are not deprived of such entertaining cricket,” said Wasim, who led Pakistan on the tour of India in 1999.

Turning to Pakistan’s imminent tour to Sri Lanka, Wasim said: “Pakistan has done well in the past year and although it will be tough playing Sri Lanka on their home grounds I am sure this Pakistan team will do well.”

Pakistan plays two Twenty20, five one-days and three Tests on the tour of Sri Lanka, with the first Twenty20 taking place in Hambantota on Friday.

CLT20 governing council approves Pakistan’s team participation

Posted: 29 May 2012 04:45 AM PDT

The Governing Council of the Champions League Twenty20 is learnt to have approved the participation of Pakistan’s domestic T20 champions Sialkot Stallions in this year’s event to be held in October at different venues in India.

The council’s approval was a mere formality after the BCCI Working Committee on May 12 had cleared the decks for the Pakistan outfit’s participation, a decision which has far reaching implications in the revival of Indo-Pak bilateral cricket ties.

It will be for the first time that a team from Pakistan will take part in the Champions League Twenty20 since the event’s inception. The Working Committee had left it to the CLT20 GC to take a final decision on the matter.

The Working Committee decision indicated a thaw in Indo-Pak bilateral cricket ties which had been snapped after the November 2008 terror attacks in Mumbai. It could also now pave the way for participation Pakistani players in the IPL for the first time after 2008.

The CLT20 GC also discussed on the format of the tournament and other issues related to logistics, according to a source.

Apart from India, the GC has representatives from South Africa and Australia.
