de Villiers helps Bangalore storm to victory over Deccan Chargers: IPL 2012

Posted: 06 May 2012 12:46 PM PDT

AB de Villiers smashed an unbeaten 47 off 17 balls to propel Royal Challengers Bangalore to a sensational five-wicket victory over Deccan Chargers in IPL 5 match.

Jamaluddin Syed Mohammad hit the winning four as Royal Challengers chased down 182-run target in 18.5 overs.

De Villiers hammered five fours and three sixes in his scintillating knock. The 18th over of the innings proved to be the turning point of the match as De Villers smacked two fours and two sixes off Dale Steyn to ensure Bangalore’s much-needed win.

Royal Challengers Bangalore lost three wickets in quick succession against Deccan Chargers in their Indian Premier League clash on Sunday.

Leg-spinner Amit Mishra struck twice in the fourteenth over to rock the Bangalore chase. Mishra dismissed Asad Pathan (4) and Virat Kohli (9) to reduce RCB to 106/3 in 13.5 overs.

Bangalore lost Chris Gayle (26) after he put on 91-run opening stand with Tillakaratne Dilshan to lead the run chase.

Anand Rajan struck in the eleventh over to give Deccan a crucial breakthrough.

Dilshan smashed two sixes and seven boundaries as he raced to his fifty in just 29 balls. RCB openers scored team fifty in 6.4 overs.

Late charge by Shikhar Dhawan (73 not out) and Cameron White (45) helped Chargers post 181/2 against Royal Challengers.

Dhawan added quick-fire 82-run stand for the second wicket with White to help Deccan set an imposing 182-run target for the hosts Bangalore. Dhawan hit a six and ten boundaries in his 52-ball quick-fire innings.

Deccan lost White in the final over to newcomer Parameswaran but after he played a whirlwind knock of 45 off just 24 balls. He smashed three sixes and two fours in his innings.

Skipper Kumar Sangakkara (10 not out) too came to the party as he hit a six and a four in his short stay on the crease.

Chargers lost opener Daniel Harris (47) after he added 86-run opening partnership with Dhawan.

Dhawan continued his good form with the bat as he raced to his fifty in just 39 balls, which include eight boundaries, to lead the Chargers run charge.

Sent in to bat, Deccan openers gave Chargers a good start before Harris got run out in the twelfth over. Harris hit four huge sixes and two boundaries in his quick 41-ball innings.

Earlier, Bangalore stand-in skipper Virat Kohli won the toss and decided to field against the bottom-placed Deccan.

Muttiah Muralitharan and Tillakaratne Dilshan are back for Bangalore in this crucial tie whereas Daniel Harris is in for Deccan, which make five changes in the team.

“It is a slow track and a small ground. If we can restrict them early on, we can chase 170-180,” said Kohli after winning the toss.

“There are no secrets about Murali’s bowling apart from him being the best spinner to have played the game,” Sangakkara said on Muralitharan’s inclusion in RCB playing XI.

Skipper Daniel Vettori has dropped himself so Virat Kohli is leading the Bangalore side again. Kohli said that they wanted to play both Murali and Vettori but it was not possible.

Bangalore Vs Deccan Chargers Post Match Presentation IPL 2012

Posted: 06 May 2012 12:11 PM PDT

AB de Villiers: Did it for the team. We needed the win. Our fielding was what motivated me tonight. The plan came off pretty well. We experimented with the middle order. Mayank played really well. I know Steyn really well, was a bit scared to face him. We come off a losing streak, we need to take advantage of this win. There is no room for error any more. The fans are unbelievable.

AB de Villiers is the MOM.

Sangakkara: We did not hit our yorkers when we needed it. Ab batted extremely well. There is no substitute for a yorker in any form of cricket. All you can do is trust your bowlers. Dale had a bad game, but has been brilliant throughout the tournament. We will keep on trying to win and try to work hard.

Kohli: We wanted to win it badly. They bowled well in the middle, when AB is there anything is possible. Main reason we did well in previous IPL was the opening stand. Dilshan batted well. Surely one of the best finishes that I have ever seen. The guys who are doing well in the nets needed to get a chance. This is just the right time for us to get some momentum

Mumbai Indians clinch last ball thriller over Chennai: IPL 2012

Posted: 06 May 2012 08:32 AM PDT

Dwayne Smith clobbered two boundaries and a six to snatch a famous win for Mumbai Indians from Chennai Super Kings in their IPL 2012 match at Wankhede Stadium on Sunday.

Chasing a competitive total of 174, Mumbai managed 174 for eight in their allotted 20 overs.

Mumbai Indians suffered a dramatic batting collapse after a solid stand between Sachin Tendulkar and Rohit Sharma, but managed to register a last-ball win.

The Little Master set the tone early on, cracking three boundaries off Albie Morkel in the fourth over, which also eased the pressure off Mumbai Indians.

Hilfenhaus, who bowled the first over a maiden, struck in his next to dismiss Mumbai opener James Franklin for one.

Tendulkar then joined forces with middle-order kingpin Rohit Sharma to bail Mumbai out of trouble. The two kept Chennai bowlers looking for wickets and played fluently to put up a solid stand for the home side.

Tendulkar and Rohit added 126 runs for the second wicket, which came from 13.3 overs at a brisk run rate of 9.33

The batting legend looked in splendid touch as he swatted 11 boundaries and a six to score 74 off just 44 balls.

His innings came to an end in the 16th over of the game when Faf du Plessis took a fine catch at the covers off R Ashwin.

Rohit played a fluent innings of 60, which came off 46 balls hitting six boundaries and two sixes.

Earlier, Chennai Super Kings top order chipped in with significant contributions to help their side reach 173 for eight in their allotted 20 overs.

Vijay, who was struggling with the bat in this edition of the Twenty20 league, slammed three sixes and four boundaries during his knock of 41 which came of 29 balls.

The opener along with Faf du Plessis provided Chennai a blistering start as the two added 47 runs in 5.2 overs.

Their partnership came to an end when the South African du Plessis was run out for nine, which came off 11 balls.

Vijay's rapid innings came to an end in the sixth over, when he was bowled by RP Singh.

Suresh Raina and Dwayne Bravo then teamed up to take Chennai forward. Raina and Bravo added 62 runs for the third wicket, which strengthened their side's position.

Raina's quickfire innings of 36 came to an end when RP Singh pulled off a stunning catch fielding at point off James Franklin. Raina struck two sixes and three boundaries and faced 21 balls to score 36.

Bravo, who scored a crucial 40 off 33 balls, struck three boundaries and a six before falling to Mumbai pacer Lasith Malinga.

Bravo added a further 44 runs off just 3.4 overs with Chennai captain MS Dhoni for the fourth wicket.

Dhoni clobbered two boundaries and a six during his knock of 25 off 15 balls.

For Mumbai, Lasith Malinga claimed 3 for 25 while RP Singh claimed 3 for 28 off their four overs.

Kohli: We want both Murali and Vettori in the team but that’s not possible with the IPL rules. We wanted to get Murali back in, he can get the wickets in the middle overs. Dilshan is back as well. It’s a slow track and a small ground. If we can restrict them, we can chase even 170-180.

Sangakkara: No secret about Murali other than the fact that he’s the best spinner to have ever played the game. Lehman has been a good influence in the team and he brings good ideas. It has been wonderful to work with him. As long as we play well and do the basics right, we have a good chance. It’s hard to smoke Murali around the park. I’ve enjoyed playing with him, now I’m on the other side.

Harbhajan: Big game today. Chennai is a very good side and we need to play well. It’s an important phase of this tournament and every game matters for all the teams. We’d like to stick to the basics and hopefully do well. Everyone is fit and we’re looking forward to the games. We’re bowling first. I’m not sure how the wicket will play, it’s always been easier to chase first. RP Singh replaces Ojha. Ojha bowled well but going by the wicket, we needed a seamer. Smith comes in and will play in the middle order.

Dhoni: We’re going into the business end of the tournament. Most of the teams will want to finish in the top 4 and it’s important to peak at the right time and continue the momentum into the play offs. It looks like a good wicket, it generally is a sporting wicket. We were looking to bowl first also. The wicket will remain the same. We are confused about the wicket and it happened even in Chennai. Suresh Raina and myself are a bit unfit today but we’re still playing, it’s not a major issue. We have to play well at this juncture and we have to be at our best. We are unchanged.

IPL 2012 Preview: Royal Challengers Bangalore Vs Deccan Chargers, 06 May 2012

Posted: 05 May 2012 06:30 PM PDT

Royal Challengers Bangalore would look to break their losing streak and bring their campaign back on track when they take on bottom-placed Deccan Chargers in their Indian Premier League clash, here tomorrow.

The race to seal one of the places in the play-offs has started and every win or loss would a count a lot from here.

Bangalore are placed sixth with nine points, two points adrift of fourth-placed Chennai Super Kings.

In their previous two outings, the hosts were hammered by Kolkata Knight Riders by 47 runs and then Kings XI Punjab won a tight match against them by four wickets.

Actually Punjab were going great guns in their chase and only three freak run-outs had brought Bangalore back in the match.

A win tomorrow would serve them well as they face formidable teams ahead — table toppers Delhi Daredevil and Mumbai Indians twice a week’s time.

Team Bangalore’s bowling has been a concern as their skipper Daniel Vettori has not made much of an impact while India seamers Zaheer Khan and Vinay Kumar have also been patchy.

Batting too has struggled as apart from big-hitting Chris Gayle, Virat Kohli, Sourabh Tiwary and Mayank Agarwal have not pulled their weight.

They may think of accommodate Muttaiah Muralitharan but since Vettori can only pick four overseas players, it remains to be seen who they drop, if at all they recall the wily Sri Lankan.

It’s been unfortunate for RCB since Muralitharan has scalped eight wickets in four matches at an impressive average of (14.00) and economy (7.00) rate compared to Vettori’s five in 10 matches played so far.

Gayle and de Villiers have been terrific so far and in that case either Tilkkaratne Dilshan or Andrew McDonald would have to make way for Muralitharan.

Dilshan has scored just one half century so far, scoring unbeaten 76 against Rajasthan Royals which RCB won by 46 runs.

With just two wins under their belt out of 10 games, Chargers are a dangerous opponent as they have very little hope of qualifying for the knockouts and they can just spoil party of one of the big teams.

Luck has not favoured the Chargers much. They have had four last-ball games which they lost. Even their fielding has been an area of concern. Shoddy fielding has let them down in many matches.

Of late, Chargers batting unit has come out with flying colours with Cameron White firing on all cylinders against Pune (74) and Chennai (77). Chargers captain Kumar Sangakkara also struck form scoring 82 against Pune. The team management will be hoping them to come good yet again.

There is also concern for Chargers over hard-hitting South African southpaw J P Duminy’s injury. He was left out against Pune and Chennai. Sangakkara will be hoping the Protea is match-fit tomorrow to boost the batting.

Sangakkara still has not lost hope of catching the rest on points table. Chargers after a disastrous five game losing streak, showed signs of a recovery. They took five out of the 10 points possible in their last five matches.

With six games left to play, Chargers could be right back in the competition if they can pull off three back-to-back wins against Bangalore, Kings XI Punjab and Rajsthan Royals. (PTI)

Teams:

DC (Probable): Parthiv Patel (wk), Shikhar Dhawan, Cameron White, Kumar Sangakkara(c), Daniel Christian, Abhishek Jhunjunwala, Ankit Sharma, Ashish Reddy, Amit Mishra, Dale Steyn, Veer Pratap Singh

RCB (Probable): Chris Gayle, Mayank Agarwal, Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers (wk), Saurabh Tiwary, Andrew McDonald, Daniel Vettori (c), R Vinay Kumar, Asad Pathan, Zaheer Khan, KP Appanna.

IPL 2012 Preview: Mumbai Indians Vs Chennai Super Kings, 06 May 2012

Posted: 05 May 2012 04:30 PM PDT

As the race to grab the top four spots heats up, fancied outfits Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians will clash at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday in what promises to be a riveting contest between the two IPL heavyweights.

The Super Kings, the title holders for the last two years, and last year’s Champions League winners Mumbai, have endured mixed fortunes leading up to the return leg and significantly have dusted off their losing run ahead of the match.

The Super Kings would be thirsting for revenge not only for the comprehensive loss suffered in the first leg match which kicked off IPL 5 just over a month ago in their backyard but also to end MI’s three-match winning streak against them beginning with the IPL encounter here on April 22, 2011 that the hosts won by eight runs.

In between the two IPL encounters that the two contested over the last two seasons came the CLT20 League clash on September 24 in Chennai which also went in favour of MI by a margin of three wickets and overall MI have the edge with a 5-4 record in IPL.

These two teams, with the two-best winning percentage among all teams in IPL would thus square off in battle-hardened fashion with MI eager to stamp their superiority for the second time after their eight-wicket thrashing of the defending champions on April 4.

Both the teams are confronted with a wobbly batting order, their perceived strengths over the last few seasons.

While MI have struggled to put up a decent score on occasions, having been restricted to scores of 92, 101 and 120, the Super Kings have also not really set things on fire with a batting line-up boasting of the likes of Suresh Raina and captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

Both sides need to get their act together in batting to make it a rip-roaring contest rather than a struggle for runs.

But MI are missing Pollard in more ways than one.

The giant West Indian fell on his right shoulder while fielding in the away game against the Delhi Daredevils and missed the subsequent two games against Deccan Chargers at home two days later and against the Warriors in Pune and is not expected to take the field in tomorrow’s game too.

The Trinidadian is a huge factor in all three departments of the game with his ability to clear the ropes nonchalantly with the bat, bowl effectively with his medium pacers and in patrolling the deep with his giant frame to stop certain boundaries and even sixes, besides taking mind-boggling catches.

MI have brought in another West Indian all-rounder Dwayne Smith to fill in for not only Pollard but also for injured Australian Mitchell Johnson.

Young MI batsmen Rohit Sharma and Ambati Rayudu have not been consistent but the bench strength has not been inspiring enough to field any other player as their replacements while the lanky James Franklin has been promoted up the order to accompany Tendulkar which has created a deep hole in the absence of Pollard.

Malinga has been the pick of the bowlers along with Pollard, while Munaf Patel has had his off days but has also been among the wickets (12 in 8 games).

Chennai Super Kings highest taker has been Doug Bollinger (8 wickets), but he had been benched in the last few games. Ben Hilfenhaus has added teeth to their bowling following a successful stint in Test cricket, but it would be difficult for him to adapt to totally different wicket conditions in India so soon after flying in from the Caribbean

Another important factor would be the type of track that is on offer as the Wankhede pitch has differed significantly from match to match. (PTI)
