IPL 2012: Sehwag, Negi help Delhi Daredevils thrash Rajasthan Royals

Posted: 01 May 2012 12:14 PM PDT

Virender Sehwag played his trademark punishing knock after little known left-arm spinner Pawan Negi’s brilliant effort with the ball as Delhi Daredevils juggernaut kept on rolling with a thumping six-wicket victory over Rajasthan Royals in an IPL match, on Tuesday.

This was Daredevils’ eighth win in 10 matches as they now have 16 points and are assured of a berth in the knock-out stages.

Sehwag blasted 73 off only 38 balls as Daredevils knocked off a target of 142 with as many as 28 balls to spare.

Kevin Pietersen (36, 34 balls, 3×4, 1×6) also ended his IPL campaign on a high as he added 96 for the second wicket with Sehwag who smashed 12 boundaries and a six.

This was after young Negi had a career-best haul of four for 18 as he ran through the Royals top and middle-order after Rahul Dravid (57) and Ajinkya Rahane (42) had added 71 runs in only 8.3 overs. From 71 for no loss, Royals slumped to 95 for five and their hopes of posting a sizeable total were dashed.

The Daredevils innings began on a disappointing note when Mehela Jayawardene (0) was trapped leg before by Ankit Chavan off the third delivery but there was no stopping Sehwag.

He started off with a couple of boundaries off Pankaj Singh and then launched into Chavan hitting him for three boundaries. The Nawab of Najafgarh punished each and every Rajasthan bowler as he reached his 50 off 20 balls. It was his fifth consecutive half century — a record in this format. It came with a slashed six over third man off Pankaj’s bowling.

Sehwag treated the bowlers with disdain and shots all around the wicket really confused Royals bowlers as to which length they should bowl.

By the time Pietersen departed, the duo had added 96 runs and the match was in Daredevils’ pocket. Sehwag continued with his boundary hitting spree and was out with only 11 required for a win.

Earlier, when Rajasthan batted, current ‘Orange Cap’ holder Ajinkya Rahane (42, 32 balls, 7×4) and skipper Rahul Dravid (57, 43 balls, 7×4) added 71 runs from only 8.3 overs before Negi dismissed Rahane, Shane Watson (8), Brad Hodge (1) and Ashok Menaria (1) to get Daredevils right back in the match.

Even though Dravid completed his half century in only 35 balls, the Royals had lost momentum courtesy a brilliant Negi and never recovered from that batting collapse.

Rahane, who has been in sublime form during this edition started off from where he had left against Daredevils in the match at the Kotla. The third over of the innings — second from Irfan Pathan saw the left-arm medium pacer hit for four boundaries. With skipper Dravid also playing confidently, runs flowed from the blades of the two batsmen. The 50 came at the end of five overs and Royals were off to a flier.

Daredevils’ find-of-the-season Shahbaz Nadeem didn’t bowl a good first spell but another youngster — Delhi boy Negi rose to the occasion as he got four wickets in a space of three overs. First it was Rahane who needlessly played a reverse sweep only to offer a simple catch Sehwag at point.

Shane Watson (8) announced his arrival at the crease with a big six off Nadeem but was cleaned up when he went for a cross-batted heave to give Negi his second wicket.

In between, Owais Shah (1) was hurried into a shot by a quicker delivery from Umesh Yadav that popped as Naman Ojha took a simple catch behind the stumps.

Negi had Royals reeling when he struck twin blow in his last over when he induced Brad Hodge (1) to play cut that landed straight into Sehwag’s hands and Ashok Menaria (1) top-edged one to Kevin Pietersen at long-on. Suddenly from 71 for no loss in 8.3 overs, Rajasthan were down in the dumps at 95 for five at the end of 13 overs. The pint-sized spinner maintained a good line and got a bit of turn and bounce which also helped his cause.

Rajasthan Royals Vs Delhi Daredevils Post Match Presentation IPL 2012

Posted: 01 May 2012 12:03 PM PDT

Negi: I am feeling pretty happy with my bowling. It was a batting wicket and I was well supported by my team-mates. I have learnt a lot from my seniors and it is a joy to share the dressing room with them.

Pawan Negi is the MoM for his 4/18.

Sehwag: The coach told me of thinking about playing Negi since the pitch seemed to be slow and low. The credit goes to our support staff, they have been very supportive. I think I am lucky to score 5 fifties. It is important to keep up this form for the rest of the tournament.

Dravid: We lost too may wickets, as simple as that. I thought 180 was a par score. We had our strongest batting unit of the tournament. Things like this can happen, may be our batsmen could have taken some time to settle down, but the pressure of scoring makes some things happen. It hurts to see Viru batting like this as an opponent but it was a sheer joy to watch him in full flow. This is our 4th loss in a row but I believe that we can go on to win many more matches with the sort of team that we have.

Deccan Chargers beat Pune Warriors by 13 runs: IPL 2012

Posted: 01 May 2012 11:08 AM PDT

Skipper Kumar Sangakkara and Cameron White’s brutal hitting at the death proved to be the decisive factor as Deccan Chargers defeated Pune Warriors by 13 runs in their Indian Premier League match, on Tuesday. The win takes Deccan Chargers’ points tally to five in the Points Table while, having lost four matches, Pune Warriors are at the seventh position.

Chasing a stiff target of 187, the visitors could manage 173 for five after Sangakkara (82; 52b, 10×4 2×6) and White (74; 45b, 4×4 4×6) bludgeoned the Pune bowlers to score 95 runs in the last six overs.

Sangakkara’s partnership of 157 for the third wicket with White, which is incidentally the highest third-wicket stand in the history of IPL, ensured that home team post a massive total.

The key was the 18th and 19th over of the Chargers innings when Sangakkara and White took 25 runs each to consolidate their position. It was 40-year-old Pune skipper Sourav Ganguly who was clobbered for 25 runs in the 18th over which changed the complexion of the match.

In reply, the Warriors lost Manish Pandey with nothing on the board in the very first ball of the innings, but Sourav Ganguly (45 off 40) and Clarke (41 off 31) kept alive the visiting team’s chances by scoring at a brisk pace.

Steven Smith top-scored for the visitors with a well-made 47 off 27 balls but his effort went in-vain.

But before his arrival, it was the duo of Ganguly and Clarke that dominated the proceedings.

The two played some breathtaking shots during their 90-run stand for the second wicket but Ganguly was also guilty of playing too many dot balls which increased the pressure.

One of the world’s premier fast bowlers, Steyn was hit for two successive boundaries by Ganguly on either side of the wicket but he was unusually subdued against his statemate Veer Pratap Singh whom he couldn’t hit for boundaries.

That was not all as Steyn leaked 17 runs in his next over. Ganguly launched the assault by hitting the pacer over cover in his trademark style and after that, Clarke collected three fours — one over square-leg and two through point — to put the pressure back on the Chargers.

There was some respite for the Chargers after Amit Mishra ran Clarke out in the 12th over.

Even as the regular bowlers failed to make a breakthrough, Shikhar Dhawan’s part-time spin did the trick as he had Ganguly caught by White at cover.

With two new batsmen at the crease, it was not easy for Pune to keep up with the required run-rate, but Smith and Robin Uthappa tried their best to make a match of it.

But in the end, it was Sangakkara and White’s onslaught that made the difference and helped Chargers record their second win of the league.

Sangakkara — who wasn’t exactly in his element till today’s match — roared back into form with a brilliant knock.

Having managed only 91 in 14 overs, Sangakkara and White hammered the Pune bowlers in the last six overs.

Opting to bat after winning the toss, Chargers did not have a good beginning to their innings as Marlon Samuels accounted for Parthiv Patel’s wicket with the very first ball of the match.

Wayne Parnell then followed it up with a maiden over to give the visitors an ideal start.

Things got even worse for the hosts when Bhuvneshwar Kumar sent back Shikhar Dhawan (13) after he had started to show some spark, having hit Samuels for a couple of fours.

The Chargers would have been three down in the very next over, had wicketkeeper Robin Uthappa taken an easy catch off Parnell to see off Cameron White, who had hit a match-winning 46-ball 78 in the previous game against the same opponents.

But luck favoured the hosts and determined to capitalise on the life he got, White along with Sangakkara went on to play a cautious innings, reaching 58 for two after 10 overs.

Even as the duo managed a couple of fours and sixes whenever they got lose balls, they actually failed to accelerate the innings.

But Sangakkara suddenly turned the tide around as churned out as many as 19 runs off Samuels over, hitting four boundaries to lift his team beyond 100-run mark.

He followed it up with another 12 runs of the next over of Parnell to set his team for a competitive total.

White then joined his partner in the run-riot as he went on to steal 25 runs off Ganguly’s over, hitting him for three consecutive sixes and a four to completely turn the match in the Chargers’ favour.

The next over of Nehra was no different as that yielded also another 25 runs before Sangakkara got out of the last ball. The Ganguly-Nehra combination in seven overs gave away 80 runs which could prove to be decisive in the end.

White lost his wicket in the first ball of the final over but by then the damage was done. (PTI)

IPL 2012: Rajasthan Royals opts to bat against Delhi Daredevils

Posted: 01 May 2012 08:24 AM PDT

Toss: Rajasthan Royals have won the toss and elected to bat

Dravid: Last match was a tough loss, but the spirit in the team is good and we would like to get over with it quickly, Cooper is fractured unfortunately and will be out for 5 weeks. Watson comes back for us and that will be a big boost. The pitch is good for batting. We will bat first. It’s a strategy which works great for us. Watson comes in for Cooper. That’s the only change.

Sehwag: We have played well in all the departments. Rajasthan is a very talented side and we need to play well. I always wanted to hit straight, but the bowlers are bowling a tight line in the tournament. We have a good team, Morkel and co have bowled well so far. I don’t mind bowling first on this wicket. We have won quite a few games chasing and we will go for it.

David Warner to join Delhi Daredevils by May 5: IPL 2012

Posted: 01 May 2012 07:05 AM PDT

Left-handed explosive batsman David Warner will join the Delhi Daredevils squad on May 5, the Australian cricketer informed on Tuesday.

Following the successful Caribbean tour where Australia defeated West Indies 2-0, some of the Australian and West Indies cricketers headed to India to represent their respective franchises in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL).

Warner wrote on his Twitter page, "Hey guys I will be in India on the 5th, had to come home first. Will see you all very soon. Go the daredevils!!!!!"

A few other Australian cricketers including skipper Michael Clarke have joined their respective franchises.

Shane Watson (Rajasthan Royals), Clarke (Pune Warriors India), Michael Hussey and Ben Hilfenhaus (Chennai Super Kings) and Ryan Harris (Kings XI Punjab) arrived in India on April 30.

Delhi will feel reinforced following Warner's addition after their in-form batsman Kevin Pietersen left for England to play against West Indies, in the upcoming Test series.

Pietersen has been in red hot form this season for the Delhi Daredevils and Warner would be expected to carry the burden of the English batsman's absence.

Warner has scored 769 runs at an average of 25.63 in 31 matches and a strike rate of 128.38 in IPL.

Sangakkara: It is hotter here in Cuttack, I don’t think the weather and conditions will change much through the day. Leaving myself out was a tough decision last game but it was one that had to be made. It looks a good wicket, it might slow down later on as the game goes on. Samantarey comes in and I come in for Christian. It is a great priviledge to play in front of such good crowds.

Ganguly: We need to regain that winning form but it will happen in the tournament. We have had some rest and some time off, we did a bit of training yesterday. Clarke is a class act and he is the skipper of Australia, a very good player. I would have batted as well but it is just four overs so I don’t think it will change much. Clarke comes in for Ryder in this game and Parnell comes in for Thomas.

IPL 2012 Preview: Rajasthan Royals Vs Delhi Daredevils, 1st May 2012

Posted: 30 Apr 2012 06:30 PM PDT

A low-on-morale Rajasthan Royals will be looking to make amends when they take on the formidable Delhi Daredevils just 48 hours after losing a close away game, in their Indian Premier League match at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium on Tuesday.

Rajasthan would be eager to put behind the disappointment of last night’s defeat when the Daredevils pulled off a dramatic one-run win from the jaws of defeat.

The Royals needed to score just 15 runs in the last two overs but Morne Morkel’s penultimate over completely changed the complexion of the match as he gave away just three runs, picking up the wicket of Brad Hodge to turn the tables.

Although the hosts would be hoping for a change of fortunes in their own den tomorrow, the Royals would have to battle it out not just against a strong Delhi outfit in the field but also have to overcome the psychological barrier.

The Royals have lost three matches on the trot and will be looking at Australia’s prolific all-rounder Shane Watson, who would be joining the squad tomorrow, to boost up the morale of the side and put it back on the winning track.

Skipper Rahul Dravid had earlier said that the arrival of Watson would lend balance to the side as he was the mainstay of the Royals’ triumph in the first edition of the IPL.

Watson, in all probability, would be opening the innings along with in-form Ajinkya Rahane and Rajasthan would expect the two to give them a solid start.

Dravid, who scored a quick-fire 40 last night, may just come down the order to provide solidarity to the middle order.

Brad Hodge, Owais Shah and Ashok Menaria, though have been inconsistent with the bat in the middle overs, and would look to get their act together.

The form of wicketkeeper Shreevats Goswami is also under the scanner.

Apart from Kevon Cooper and Siddharth Trivedi, no one has looked consistent with the ball for the Royals. Even as Pankaj Singh (2 for 25) did well yesterday, they will have to fire in unison tomorrow.

On the other hand, the Delhi Daredevils, having won seven out of nine matches, would be looking to carry on the momentum.

The fact that they won last night’s match only in the closing overs would play on their minds and the visitors would be wanting to register a more convincing victory.

The Daredevils are aware of the glorious uncertainties of Twenty20 cricket and would be more cautious against the Royals. (PTI)

IPL 2012 Preview: Pune Warriors vs Deccan Chargers, 1st May 2012

Having lost to Deccan Chargers at home earlier this week, Pune Warriors will look to extract revenge when the two teams square off in an Indian Premier League match on Tuesday.

The Sourav Ganguly-led Warriors are currently placed at No. 7 in the points table, with just four wins out of the nine and the team would like to put its campaign back on track against table-trailers Chargers.

The bowling troika of Marlon Samuels, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Rahul Sharma looked ordinary against Chargers at the Subrata Roy Sahara Stadium. However, Pune can take some heart from the performance of Ashish Nehra and South African import Alfonso Thomas.

Thomas has particularly been impressive with the ball conceding just over six runs an over in the three matches he has played for the Warriors so far.

Nehra, on the other hand, has looked good in patches, but his inability to strike early in the last few games have raised concerns in the Pune camp.

The form of leg-spinner Rahul Sharma is also a matter of worry for the visitors and with Ashok Dinda still nursing a side strain the Pune attack wears a rather depleted look.

Their batsmen have been performing well, but the team would want its top-order to be more consistent.

Jesse Ryder has amassed 224 runs in the tournament so far, courtesy his 86-run knock against Delhi Daredevils and another 73 against Chennai Super Kings, but in the rest of the matches the New Zealander has struggled to get going.

The skipper also hasn’t wielded his bat to much of an effect with 41 being his highest.

Samuels and Manish Pandey, too, have not been able to prove their worth so far.

The only consistent performance for the Warriors has come from Robin Uthappa and Australian recruit Steven Smith.

Chargers, on the other hand, have not succeeded in giving their campaign a right direction and their dismal performance against Mumbai Indians has not done any good to their depleting morale.

Even the decision of skipper Kumar Sangakkara to drop himself for the Mumbai tie did not have any bearing on the team’s results.

Led by Dayle Steyn in the bowling department, they tried their best to take the fight to MI after just scoring 100 with the bat in their previous match, but their overall ability has come under question.

The team has no realistic chance of making it to the last four after losing six matches out of the eight they have played so far but they can definitely be the ‘party poopers’ for the other teams. (PTI)
