Royal Challengers Bangalore crush Pune Warriors by 35 runs: IPL 2012

Posted: 11 May 2012 01:24 PM PDT

Half-centuries from Chris Gayle and Tillakaratne Dilshan combined with an excellent bowling effort helped Royal Challengers Bangalore crush Pune Warriors by 35 runs and to go fourth in the IPL Points Table.

While Bangalore are now placed third in the table with 15 points, the Warriors slumped to their seventh straight defeat to continue to languish at number eight.

Gayle (57 off 31) and Dilshan (53 off 44) helped Royal Challengers to a challenging 173 for three after they were asked to bat by new Pune skipper Steven Smith.

Regular Pune skipper Sourav Ganguly ‘rested’ himself in the match and the side made as many as five changes but nothing helped them as they swallowed yet another defeat.

Chasing 174, the hosts made the worst possible start as paceman Zaheer Khan removed Mohnish Mishra (4) and Manish Pandey (0) in the very first over.

Australian skipper Michael Clarke (13) yet again came a cropper as all Pune managed was 138 for nine in 20 overs.

R Vinay Kumar (3/32), Muttiah Muralitharan (2/16) and Zaheer (2/21) all contributed in Pune’s rout by striking intermittently.

Robin Uthappa’s fiery 38 before being stumped off Muralitharan and Anustup Majumdar’s sensible knock of 31 was the only resistance that came from the home side.

Earlier, Gayle and Dilshan laid a very strong platform for a big score and later Saurabh Tiwary (36 not out off 30) also contributed in team’s total.

The visitors had a fiery start, yet again thanks to Gayle’s pyrotechnics with the bat. Gayle and Dilshan put on 80 runs for the first wicket in just 51 balls.

Gayle was his usual attacking self as he smashed six sixes, four in one over of Bhuvaneshwar Kumar, to score the fastest fifty of the season in just 24 balls.

Dilshan played second fiddle to Gayle but later on took the responsibility to guide the side to a decent total.

Sri Lankan paceman Angelo Mathews was the most economical and successful bowler for Pune as he gave away just 14 runs in his three overs also dismissed destructive Gayle.

By the first six overs, RCB had reached 66 for no loss and Gayle’s contribution was 50. Gayle had hit Pune’s spinner Rahul Sharma for five sixes and today he took out Bhuvaneshwar for some severe punishment.

Mathews brought relief for the hosts when he had Gayle caught at long-on, where Manish Pandey took a simple catch.

Bangalore still maintained a good run-rate and were 88 for one at half-way stage.

Rahul Sharma then dismissed rival skipper Virat Kohli, who miscued one off the spinner and the leading edge flew to his counterpart Steven Smith at mid-off.

Run-rate suffered due to quick wickets and the next big over came only when Rahul was hit for 16 runs in the 14th over through a six and two fours by Dilshan and Saurabh Tiwary.

Dilshan, who faced 44 balls, kept the scoreboard ticking and in company of Tiwary put on 43 for the third wicket. A run out ended Dilshan’s stay at the crease.

Bangalore Vs Pune Warriors Post Match Presentation IPL 2012

Gayle: I think this is the best ever form I am in. I have to mention that Murali stole my orange cap. I go to bed in the morning after breakfast, the game plan is to go and hit. We Jamaicans are good with the dance and we do enjoy a good shake.

Gayle is the MoM for his blistering 57.

Kohli: It was high time that our bowlers came into the party. We thought we needed to give Saurabh some game-time and confidence ahead of the big games coming up.

Smith: It was good fun. It was tough when Gayle and Dilshan were going. We are nearing the end of the tournament and we wanted to play well and give a good account of ourselves.

Smith: I am looking forward to the occasion. Sourav has rested himself for this game, we have got a few new players in today so hopefully we can put in a good performance. The crowd has been really good and have come out to support us even though we are down in the dumps. I think we have chased well in the games we have won and this wicket looks like it will get better later. Alfonso Thomas, Rahul Sharma and Mohnish Mishra come in for this game.

Kohli: We are pretty happy that we are peaking at the right time. Hopefully we can take this from through to the finals. We play a bit of golf to relax, well I don’t but some of these guys do. I would have batted first because this track looks slow and it won’t be easy to bat on it in the second half. Syed Mohammad is not fit and KP Apanna comes in for him.

Sri Lanka Premier League T20 kicks off from August 10

Posted: 11 May 2012 02:34 AM PDT

The inaugural edition of the Sri Lanka Premier League (SLPL) Twenty20 tournament will be played from August 10 to 31, Sri Lanka Cricket announced on Thursday.

The matches are to take place at the Premadasa stadium and at the Pallekele stadium in the central district of Kandy.

“International players will be playing in the SLPL alongside Sri Lankan national cricketers and young Lankan hopefuls,” SLC said.

The first edition of SLPL will feature seven provincial teams which will adhere to a compulsory ruling of no more than six overseas players in each squad.

However, it will be mandatory for each team to field only four overseas players in the playing eleven whilst the remaining seven players will all be Sri Lankans with one player, out of the said seven players, will be an under-21 player.

Each of the provinces would feature a player unique to the province.

The teams will be Basnahira (Western) Bears, Kandurata (central hill) Kites, Nagenahira (eastern) Nagas, Ruhuna (southern) Rhinos, Uthura (north) Oryxes, Uva (south eastern) Unicorns, Wayamba (north central) Wolves.

The SLPL was supposed to kick off last year, with SLC’s then interim committee signing a five-year deal with the Singapore-based Somerset Entertainment Ventures to organise the event.

However, the SLC was forced to postpone the event after the BCCI refused to allow its cricketers to participate in the SLPL as it suspected a link between the sponsors and Lalit Modi, the former IPL commissioner.

The SLC officials said they were confident of the participation of Indian and Pakistani players in the SLPL, which will precede the ICC T20 World Cup hosted here between September 18 and October 7.

Craig McDermott quits as Australian bowling coach

Posted: 11 May 2012 02:16 AM PDT

Craig McDermott has quit as bowling coach of the Australian team, citing the conflicting demands of constant touring with family life, Cricket Australia said Friday.

Former Test fast bowler McDermott, 47, has worked with great success in developing Australia’s fast bowling stocks in the 12 months he has been in the job.

“It has been a very difficult decision to leave my position as the bowling coach of the Australian cricket team, a job I have thoroughly enjoyed since beginning 12 months ago,” McDermott said in a statement.

“However, the team’s schedule is a particularly busy one and after looking at the upcoming touring demands, I felt this to be the right decision from a personal and professional point of view.”

Australia, who have recently returned from a tour to the West Indies, play a series of one-day internationals in England from next month, followed by an ODI series against Pakistan. They host South Africa, Sri Lanka and the West Indies next southern summer.

McDermott has been prominent in the development of young fast bowlers James Pattinson, Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc along with the renaissance of senior bowlers Ben Hilfenhaus and Peter Siddle.

“It has been a great honour to work with our most exciting bowlers over this period and we have achieved much success,” he said.

“The progression of particular players and the improvement of depth in Australian bowling stocks has been the result of much hard work from both sides and is something I am particularly proud of.”

McDermott said he will continue to work at Cricket Australia’s centre of excellence and was not ruling out being involved with the Australian cricket team in the future.

Head coach Mickey Arthur said McDermott would be hard to replace.

“Craig has taken our fast bowlers to another level and his skills and experience will be sorely missed around the group,” Arthur said.

“However, we completely understand and respect Craig’s decision. (AFP)

IPL 2012 Preview: Bangalore Vs Pune Warriors, 11 May 2012

Posted: 10 May 2012 05:30 PM PDT

Pune Warriors India have just pride to play for while Royal Challengers Bangalore would do a world of good to their play-off chances if they win Indian Premier League (IPL) clash between the two sides, here tomorrow.

After their crushing nine-wicket win over Mumbai Indians, Bangalore are placed fourth in the table while Pune are languishing at number eight.

It will be a big challenge for Pune to arrest their slide as they are coming into the clash with six straight defeats.

They have failed to fire as a unit as their batting has flopped and bowlers too have not made the desired impact.

Nothing has worked for the hosts, neither the inclusion of Australian skipper Michael Clarke nor the change in batting order. All their efforts have been fruitless as the league has progressed.

Bangalore too have their own problems, but they have a game-changer in Chris Gayle, who has made a significant contribution in keeping them in contention for the play-offs.

His whirlwind batting shifts the momentum in Bangalore’s favour at any given point of time. Then they have AB de Villiers, who on his day is a match-winner and stand-in captain Virat Kohli, who is gradually getting into the groove.

It is not known if regular skipper Daniel Vettori would return for tomorrow’s clash. And if he does so, the team will have a headache to exclude one foreign recruit.

Tillakaratne Dilshan did well yesterday along with Gayle and Muttiah Muralitharan too has done well after being included in the side again. But either of the two Sri Lankans would have to make the way for the captain i.e. if he returns.

Their bowling looks too good for Warriors with Zaheer Khan and R Vinay Kumar in good form. Vinay Kumar after his lively first spell against Mumbai Indians yesterday, has raised the expectations level.

The pace duo is expected to do well against struggling Warriors batsmen. Of all of them, only two — Jesse Ryder and Manish Pandey — have managed to score a half-century.

Injury to in-form Kiwi batsman Ryder has just compounded their problems. They need batting to fire in unison if they are to upstage formidable Bangalore.

Skipper Sourav Ganguly too has to lead from the front, although he is not the same batsman he used to be a couple of years ago. (PTI)

Chennai Super Kings beat Rajasthan Royals by 4 wickets: IPL 2012

Posted: 10 May 2012 02:20 PM PDT

Chennai Super Kings kept alive their chances of qualifying for the play-offs by eking out a four-wicket win over Rajasthan Royals in a crucial Indian Premier League match on Thursday.

With this win, Chennai are now placed fourth in the IPL Points Table.

After restricting Rajasthan to 126 for six, CSK rode on Albie Morkel and Srikkanth Anirudha’s late bursts to romp home with 11 balls to spare.

However, CSK’s run chase were off to a bad start as they lost wickets at regular intervals to totter at 84 for six at one stage.

Chasing a modest total, CSK were dealt an early blow when Shane Watson went through the defence of a struggling Murali Vijay in the first over.

New man in Suresh Raina (23 off 17) played a cameo before he was brilliantly caught by Ajinkya Rahane off Pankaj Singh.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s decision to promote Dwayne Bravo up the order failed to yield the desired result after the West Indian was caught at deep square-leg by Stuart Binny off Siddharth Trivedi in the 12th over.

To make matters worse for CSK, Michael Hussey fell victim of an uncessary mix up with Dhoni in the next over.

Needing 30 off the last three overs, Morkel and Anirudha scored identical six-ball 18 and stitched undefeated 43 runs for the seventh wicket to guide CSK to the vital win.

Morkel and Anirudha tore apart the Australian duo of Watson and Shaun Tait to notch up the required runs in 18.1 overs.

By virtue of this win, CSK moved up to the fourth position in the standings with 13 points from as many games, while Rajasthan have slipped to the sixth spot with 12 points from 13 games.

Earlier, CSK produced a disciplined bowling performance to restrict Rajasthan to 126 for six.

Sent into bat, Ben Hilfenhaus (2/8) produced a stunning opening spell to dent Rajasthan’s prospects at the start.

Hilfenhaus scalped two vital wickets of Rajasthan skipper Rahul Dravid and Watson early during his breathtaking opening spell of four overs which yielded just eight runs.

Dravid was Hilfenhaus’ first victim as he fell in the second over, top-edging one to Hussey at mid-off.

Hilfenhaus then accounted for dangerman Watson cheaply three overs later to derail Rajasthan’s innings which was marred by three brief rain interruptions at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium.

Watson was brilliantly caught by a diving Ravichandran Ashwin at the third-man boundary as the batsman went for a huge heave over square-leg only to get a leading edge.

In-form Rahane (17) too perished soon in search of quick runs, again caught by Ashwin off Yo Mahesh (2/21) as Rajasthan slipped to 43 for three in the ninth over.

Binny, however, tried to force a comeback with a fierce counter-attack and thrashed Dwayne Bravo for two boundaries and a six to pick up 18 runs off his opening over.

But Binny departed in the next over in search one too many, caught by Raina off Mahesh.

Brad Hodge and Johan Botha then added 32 runs for the fifth wicket to give impetus to Rajasthan’s innings before the two fell in quick succession.

While Botha was cleaned up by Ravindra Jadeja, Hodge’s 28-ball 33-run knock was cut short by Ashwin.

Hodge top-scored for Rajasthan with 33 off 28 balls, while Binny played a vital 18-ball 27-run knock in the middle.(PTI)
