Chennai Super Kings beat Deccan Chargers by 10 runs: IPL 2012

Posted: 04 May 2012 12:41 PM PDT

Cameron White’s brilliant 77 off 53 balls went in vain as Chennai Super Kings beat Deccan Chargers by 10 runs in an Indian Premier League match at the MA Chidambaram stadium.

Daniel Christian remained unbeaten on 27 off 24 balls but failed to take Deccan across the 161-run target. Christian hit a six and two fours in his innings as Deccan managed only 150/5 in the end.

Defending the target, Chennai took wickets at crucial junctures to win the match and jumped to fourth in the IPL table with 11 points in 11 matches.

Deccan lost Kumar Sangakkara (1) and Shikhar Dhawan (36) in consecutive overs to hand over the initiative to the hosts Chennai.

White raced to his fifty in just 39 balls as he continued to fight the Chennai attack from one end. White smashed two sixes and nine boundaries in his 53-ball knock.

Suresh Raina took a brilliant catch off his own bowling to get rid of Chargers skipper in the twelfth over soon after Deccan lost Dhawan in the previous one unfortunately.

Ball coming off a straight drive from White was deflected from bowler Dwayne Bravo’s hand to hit the stumps at the non-striker’s end to run out the unlucky Dhawan. The left-hander hit three boundaries in his 29-ball innings and added valuable 68-run stand with Cameron White for the second wicket to lead the visitors run chase.

Deccan lost Parthiv Patel (1) early in the second over when pacer Albie Morkel struck in his very first over to reduce Chargers to 9/1 in 1.4 overs.

Electing to bat, Chennai top-order batsmen contributed in unison to help Super Kings post 160/6 against Deccan Chargers.

Deccan pacer Daniel Christian dismissed MS Dhoni (34) in the final over to stop the Chennai skipper from final assault against the visitors. Dhoni hit just two fours in his 28-ball innings.

Ashish Reddy make sure that Ravindra Jadeja’s poor form with the bat continue as he dismissed the CSK all-rounder in the penultimate over for 4 runs off 9 balls.

Chennai lost Albie Morkel (13) and Faf du Plessis (42) in consecutive overs. Abhishek Jhunjhunwala dismissed Morkel in the fifteenth over to reduce Chennai to 124/4 in 14.6 overs soon after Du Plessis became the second victim of pacer Veer Pratap Singh in the previous over.

The in-form Du Plessis hit a six and two fours in his 35-ball knock and put on valuable 40-run stand with skipper Dhoni for the third wicket.

Du Plessis was also involved in a crucial 64-run stand for the second wicket with Suresh Raina (32) to lead the hosts run charge in the beginning.

Amit Mishra provided Chargers a crucial break in the tenth over when he dismissed Raina to end the dangerous looking stand with du Plessis. Raina smashed two huge sixes and a four in his 24-ball quick-fire innings to revive the CSK charge after losing Murali Vijay (14) early.

Pacer Veer Pratap Singh dismissed Vijay in the third over to give Deccan Chargers an early breakthrough.

Vijay started the Chennai innings confidently as he hit couple of boundaries in his 11-ball short stay at the crease before VP Singh struck with his second ball to reduce the hosts to 15/1 in 2.2 overs.

Earlier, Chennai skipper MS Dhoni won the toss and decided to bat against Deccan on Friday.

After losing the toss, Kumar Sangakkara said that he would have batted first too.

Chennai have dropped Michael Hussey and bring in pacer Ben Hilfenhaus in his place whereas Murali Vijay replaces Wriddhaman Saha.

Abhishek Jhunjhunwala and Daniel Christian are in the playing XI for Chargers.

Chennai Super Kings Vs Deccan Chargers Post Match Presentation IPL 2012

Posted: 04 May 2012 12:11 PM PDT

Suresh Raina: I think I need to spend more time at the crease. I have been hitting the ball really well, need to play till the 15th over. Whenever lefties come, Dhoni calls me for an over or two. We executed the plan really well, Bravo and Albie bowled really well. We need to bat really well in Mumbai.

Suresh Raina is the Man of the Match

Sangakkara: It was the case of getting a good start and not keeping up with the rate. Brilliant fielding by Chennai. White and Dhawan played well. White has been batting exceptionally well. We have dropped far too many catches to win the close games. We need to get our basics right. We batted and bowled well, especially to restrict CSK to 160.

Dhoni: The wicket has gone slightly slower and it becomes difficult to step up later on. We have capitalised in the last overs which we have not been able to do. If you bowl well and finish well, you will more often than not win the game. Bollinger is bowling well in the nets, but he is bowling a lot of no-balls. He started off really well. Need a genuine fast bowler who can pick wickets in the first six overs.

Dhoni: There is plenty of depth in our batting but we have failed to add those extra runs in the end. Our bowling has also let us down. It is not like we have always gone easily into the play offs, in the last four years whenever we have been put under pressure we have come out with a good performance. We have the team but at the end of the day it is up to the application, we have had plenty of practice sessions here and I hope the hardwork we have put in will reflect here today. We don’t go in with a target in mind, we want to see how the pitch plays and then decide. Hussey needs to make way for Hilfenhaus and Saha makes way for Vijay.

Sangakkara: It was a good performance in the last match, we need to keep performing. Our batting needs to keep going well and we need to bowl in the right areas. It was nice to get some runs and get into some form and I hope the other guys chip in as well today. It looks a good track, hopefully we can defend well today. We just need to be consistent and hope that we bowl bat and field well. Abhishek Jhunjhunwala comes in and Daniel Christian comes in.

Gibson, Sammy welcome Gayle’s return to West Indies team

Posted: 04 May 2012 06:53 AM PDT

With the standoff between WICB and Chris Gayle over after the explosive batsman pledged his availability for the country, the West Indies cricket team is gearing up to welcome him back but captain Darren Sammy insisted that he will need to get used to the “hardworking culture” in the dressing room.

Sammy backed the explosive batsman to be part of the side for the ODI series against England next month.

However, he said that his predecessor will need to get used to the new “hardworking culture” put in place in the West Indies dressing room.

“… as a team we have moved on … with a new attitude.

We are going to strive to move forward. When Chris joins the set-up, he will be coming into a very hardworking environment in which he has to fit in,” he said.

“Whoever comes into the dressing myself and coach would welcome them. We would urge them to contribute to the team’s success. If he is in it is good for us. We all know what he’s capable of doing. Hopefully he could fit in nicely and do the job to take West Indies cricket forward.”

Gayle made himself available for selection for the one-day leg of the West Indies’ tour of England starting on June 16 as he decided to forsake his contract with Somerset as an overseas player for the Friends Life t20.

West Indies coach Ottis Gibson said if Gayle was available, he would “definitely be picked” for the ODI series.

“It’s great to hear that Chris is available again. I’m sure the selectors will pick him because he is world-class. If he’s made himself available for the ODI series, I can’t see him not being selected,” Gibson told reporters ahead of his side’s three-day tour match against Sussex beginning on Saturday.

Gibson, who has been openly critical of Gayle in the past, was confident that despite having not played international cricket since the 2011 World Cup, the opener would slip back into the team environment without fuss.

“It will be easy (for him). He’s the best ODI batsman in the world. So I don’t think it will be a problem at all. He plays very well, going into many different dressing rooms all round the world and making runs. I don’t think coming into ours will be any different.”(PTI)

Heavy rains predicted ahead of Kolkata-Pune clash at Eden: IPL 2012

Posted: 04 May 2012 02:17 AM PDT

Rain has played spoilsport twice in Kolkata Knight Riders’ IPL home matches this season and the Met department has once again sounded a warning for Saturday’s sold-out clash against Sourav Ganguly-led Pune Warriors India on Saturday.

The met office has predicted heavy rains and thundershowers towards the evening, threatening to spoil the show that has generated huge interest among city’s cricket buffs.

The city received rainfall and thundershowers for two days in succession since yesterday and Saturday’s forecast was no different.

“Thundersquall with wind speed reaching between 50 and 60 kmph and accompanied with lightning may occur at isolated places over Orissa and West Bengal,” said the Met forecast.

The Knight Riders match against Deccan Chargers on April 24 was washed out without even a ball being bowled after a thunderstorm accompanied with heavy rain lashed the Eden Gardens.

The hosts had opened their IPL campaign after going down to leaders Delhi Daredevils in a rain-truncated 12 overs a side fixture on April 5.

The fixture is seen as Warriors skipper-cum-mentor Ganguly’s revenge match against his former franchise that snubbed him after a three-season association. (PTI)

IPL 2012 Preview: Chennai Super Kings Vs Deccan Chargers, 04 May 2012

Posted: 03 May 2012 04:30 PM PDT

Seeking to end their losing streak at home, Chennai Super Kings will have their task cut out when they take on an improved Deccan Chargers in an Indian Premier League match on Friday.

The Super Kings have lost their last two matches at the M A Chidambaram stadium, against Kings XI Punjab and Kolkata Knight Riders, whereas the Chargers are slowly finding their feet with wins over Pune Warriors at both home and away.

While CSK coach Stephen Fleming and skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni have been insisting that they have got enough depth in both batting and bowling, that did not reflect in their performance in their last two games.

Fleming had commented that it is time his players clicked.

In the initial stages of the tournament, Chennai had South African stars Frau Du Plessis, Albie Morkel and Tamil Nadu’s S Badrinath contributing to the team’s cause.

But Dhoni and Suresh Raina’s lack of form seem to have exposed the chinks in the middle-order.

On the other hand, though placed at the bottom of the table, the Chargers’ morale got a boost after wins over Pune.

CSK may appear a better side on paper, but the Chargers have the wherewithal and the combination to beat the struggling hosts.

It is a good opportunity for the Chargers to cash in on Chennai’s poor run at home.

Dhoni, on his part, has done precious little with the bat and his on-field decisions have not yielded the desired results.

While Cameron White, Shikhar Dhawan and skipper Kumar Sankagara have been the batting mainstays for the Chargers, Jean-Paul Dumminy and Parthiv Patel have also been amongst the runs.

The visitors, though, will have to tighten their bowling as apart from pace spearhead Dale Steyn, who has been exemplary with 11 wickets from nine matches, none of them could make an impact. (PTI)

Teams:

CSK (probable): Subramaniam Badrinath, Faf du Plessis, Michael Hussey, Suresh Raina, MS Dhoni (c&wk), Ravindra Jadeja, Dwayne Bravo, Albie Morkel, Ravichandran Ashwin, Shadab Jakati, Yo Mahesh.

DC (probable): Shikhar Dhawan, Parthiv Patel (wk), Kumar Sangakkara (c), Cameron White, Jean-Paul Duminy, Biplab Samantray, Ankit Sharma, A Ashish Reddy, Dale Steyn, Amit Mishra, Veer Pratap Singh.

Time: 20:00 local (14:30 GMT)
