Delhi Daredevils beat Kings XI Punjab to qualify for playoffs: IPL 2012

Posted: 15 May 2012 12:45 PM PDT

Sri Lankan Mahela Jayawardene hit a calculated unbeaten half-century as Delhi Daredevils thrashed Kings XI Punjab by five wickets to qualify for the knockout stage of the Indian Premier League, on Tuesday. With the five-wicket win on Tuesday, Delhi maintain their supremacy in the points table.

Courtesy Jayawardene’s unbeaten 56 off 49 balls, Daredevils managed to reach the target of 137 with an over to spare as they consolidated their position at the top of the table with 20 points and two matches left.

Delhi pace duo of Umesh Yadav (3/21) and Varun Aaron (2/19) had shared five wickets between to restrict Kings XI Punjab to manageable 136 for eight.

Barring skipper David Hussey (40 not out), it was a combination of poor shot selection and some disciplined effort by the hosts that enabled them to keep the score under check.

Jayawardene played authentic cricketing shots like cover drives, late cut, pull-shots and was well supported by Naman Ojha (34) and Irfan Pathan (19) after Parvinder Awana’s hostile first spell had reduced Delhi to 37 for four.

However, it was the 18th over from Awana where Pathan hit three boundaries to seal the issue. But it wouldn’t have been possible without Jayawardene who showed that matches can be won playing proper cricket shots.

This was after the Daredevils top-order failed once again as both Virender Sehwag (9) and David Warner (14) promised a lot of fireworks as 21 runs came off the first two overs.

Then Warner played a rank bad shot to be caught at gully by Azhar Mahmood off Praveen Kumar’s bowling.

Sehwag, who was dropped by Davis Hussey at mid-on off Praveen’s bowling however was gone in the very next over bowled by Parvinder Awana.

Awana, who bowled one of the best first spells of this edition with figures of 3-0-7-3 ran through the top-order. He bowled a fast and fuller delivery to Sehwag which hit his pads then clipped the off-bails.

Venugopal Rao (7) played away from his body to be caught behind while Ross Taylor (0) got a beauty that pitched on the middle-stump and moved a shade and was declared caught behind.

At 37 for four, Jayawardene and Ojha (34) joined hands resurrect the innings.

While the Lankan captain played the second fiddle, Ojha started taking on the bowlers as Awana was finished with his spell. He hit leggie Piyush Chawla for two straight sixes and then a couple of boundaries off Harmeet Singh to ease the pressure.

The duo added 58 runs for the fifth wicket when Chawla dismissed Ojha with a rank long hop which he failed to clear the fielder at deep mic-wicket.

In the Punjab innings, there were no significant partnership as Hussey was the only batsmen trying to take the attack back to the opposition camp but he needed to be complemented from the other side which unfortunately didn’t happen.

Speed merchants Yadav (3/21) and Aaron (2/19) shared the bulk of the spoils.

Shaun Marsh (13, 3×4) hit three boundaries in the region between cover and extra cover off part-time off-spinner Venugopal Rao who only managed to bowl half-trackers.

He survived a confident leg-before appeal off Morne Morkel’s bowling but was gone in the very next over bowled by Aaron.

The India international angled one into Marsh who tried to play it off his hips only for Naman Ojha to take a good catch down leg-side.

Mandeep Singh (21) hit a few streaky boundaries but the compulsive pull-shot player in him brought his downfall as he tried a horizontal bat shot off Aaron. He couldn’t get required elevation only to be smartly pouched by short mid-wicket by Sehwag.

Nitin Saini (15) also didn’t last long as Umesh Yadav sent him back into the dug-out. The ball pitched on the off-stump channel and moved a shade as the Haryana lad pushed at it. Sehwag took a low tumbling catch to make it 54 for three.

It didn’t take much time before it was 63 for four as David Miller backed too far from the non-striker?s end going for a non-existent single as Pawan Negi at mid-on made no mistake with all three stumps to aim at.

Skipper Hussey and Azhar Mahmood (9) tried to do a repair job. Mahmood dispatched a short ball from Umesh with a well-timed pull-shot.

However, Umesh made a good comeback in the next few deliveries as started bowling at fuller length. Mahmood tried to hoist him over long-off only to be holed out at the boundary ropes.

With half of the side gone for 80, it was always supposed to be an uphill task for Kings XI to post a big total.

Last match’s hero Gurkeerat Singh Ahluwalia (8) hit two boundaries but then a classical left-arm spinner’s delivery from Negi. He invited the batsman to come out for a drive and the ball spun away with Ojha whipping off the bails in a flash to make it 88 for six. (PTI)

Delhi Daredevils vs Kings XI Post Match Presentation IPL 2012

Yadav: I just let the captain know what field I want. Morne and Irfan support me really well. I have fun in this format because sometimes you do well and sometimes you get hit. The ball was swinging well today and I’m just trying to put together some consistent performances.

Umesh Yadav is the Man of the Match.

Hussey: I think we were right in the game until the last three overs. Full credit to Irfan and Mahela for how they played. Awana has probably been the find of the tournament for us as far as our bowling goes and he has shown why he really is a future talent for Indian cricket.

Sehwag: There was some movement on the track and our bowlers took early wicket. That’s why we restricted Punjab to a score below 140. We were expecting Mahela to play until the end, he took his time and played beautifully and Ojha supported him well. I just tell my fast bowlers to bowl quick and enjoy how they bowl.

IPL 2012 Preview: Delhi Daredevils vs Kings XI Punjab, 15 May 2012

Posted: 14 May 2012 06:30 PM PDT

A rejuvenated Kings XI Punjab will be aiming to keep their play-off hopes alive when they take on table-toppers Delhi Daredevils in an Indian Premier League match in New Delhi on Tuesday.

While Delhi, with 18 points from 13 games, are favourites to make it to the play-offs, Kings XI, who have of late won a few close games, would like to win their remaining three games in order to stay in contention having logged 14 points so far.

The two teams have had contrasting results in their previous matches. While Delhi were completely outplayed by Chennai Super Kings after their top-order flopped miserably, KXIP eked out a victory off the last ball courtesy some lusty shots by stand-in-captain David Hussey and young Gurkeerat Singh Ahluwalia.

The Daredevils have been mostly dependent on their top-order batsmen to fire. Inevitably when skipper Virender Sehwag or David Warner have failed to provide momentum, the home team has looked pretty ordinary as the middle-order batsmen are yet to stand-up and be counted.

Yogesh Nagar and Y Venugopal Rao got the ideal platform to prove their detractors that they too have the firepower but what one saw was a meek effort.

While the Chepauk track played its part, but on the same pitch, the likes of Murali Vijay and Suresh Raina made batting look so easy. Which again brings raises the question, does Delhi middle-order lack quality?

However, the Feroz Shah Kotla track would be better for stroke-players who like the ball coming onto the bat.

As far as the bowling is concerned, it will again depend on how well Morne Morkel bowls his opening spell. But Daredevils might not go for a four-pronged pace-attack like they did in Chennai.

Having both Umesh Yadav and Varun Aaron in the squad means that Delhi won’t be short on pace but certainly the attack will be a bit one-dimensional.

It can be expected that either Pawan Negi or Shahbaz Nadeem ? both of whom have done well — will be back in the playing XI. While Warner, Mahela Jayawardene and Morkel are automatic choices, it remains to be seen whether Andre Russell or Ross Taylor make a comeback in place of Roloef van der Merwe.

The KXIP side bears a settled a look despite the fact that regular skipper Adam Gilchrist hasn’t made a comeback since he got injured. Hussey hasn’t done a bad job and Gilchrist will expect that his bunch of pretenders pull off another upset.

A big factor can be KXIP’s bowler of the season Parvinder Awana. The second highest wicket-taker of the last domestic season knows the Kotla track like the back of his hand and his inputs will certainly help his team.

Also the presence of Azhar Mahmood has changed the complexion of the side as the veteran all-rounder has given the it much-needed balance.(PTI)

DD: David Warner, Virender Sehwag (c), Mahela Jayawardene, Naman Ojha (wk), Yogesh Nagar, Roelof van der Merwe, Venugopal Rao, Irfan Pathan, Morne Morkel, Umesh Yadav, Varun Aaron.

Bravo last ball six against Kolkata took Chennai closer to play-off: IPL 2012

Posted: 14 May 2012 02:36 PM PDT

Dwayne Bravo smashed a last-ball six as Chennai Super Kings pulled off a stunning five-wicket win over Kolkata Knight Riders in a dramatic Indian Premier League match to keep their hopes of a play-off berth alive on Monday.

With five runs required from the last ball, Bravo (11 not out off seven balls) smashed Rajat Bhatia for a six over long on to stun a jam-packed crowd at Eden Gardens.

Chasing 159 for a win, Michael Hussey (56 from 39 balls) and Murali Vijay (36 from 25 balls) set the platform with a 97-run stand from 10.2 overs for the opening wicket.

But Sunil Narine’s mystery bowling, in which he claimed 2-14, swung the momentum in favour of KKR before Chennai skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (28 balls from 21 balls) set up the match nicely, taking 18 runs from the penultimate over bowled by Marchant de Lange.

Nine runs were required from the last over but with Dhoni being dismissed when he was bowled by a slower ball from Bhatia in the second ball, the match went down to the wire.

Aiming to send the ball out of the park, Bravo miscued one delivery in the penultimate ball when his bat slipped out of his hands on to the midwicket to take the match to a last ball finish.

With the win on Monday, Chennai climbed to fourth spot in the table with 17 points from 15 matches, the same as KKR who occupied the third spot with a better net run rate.

The win also avenged Chennai’s first-leg defeat at home against the same opponents.

Chennai were given an aggressive start by Hussey and Vijay who put on 97-run partnership from 62 balls. The duo seemed to begin from where they had left in the previous match when their 75-run stand had set the tone for a comprehensive nine-wicket win over table-toppers Delhi Daredevils.

Laxmipathy Balaji, having recovered from a ligament strain, looked out of sorts as the seamer was hit for 11 runs that included a six, a boundary and a wide.

Hussey was equally ruthless against Jacques Kallis for a six in the next over while Vijay too complemented the Aussie with some delightful strokes. It was raining sixes and boundaries all over the park.

The first powerplay yielded 51 runs as Chennai were comfortably placed at 96 for no loss in 10 overs.

The blazing start meant that the required run-rate was well under control while KKR struggled on the field.

Even a successful 11th over in which Narine foxed the Chennai opening duo could not make much of an impact.

A third wicket followed in the form of Suresh Raina (8) but with the equation reading 49 runs from 40 balls, it was well under control for Dhoni’s men.

But Narine’s final over in which he conceded just three runs, swung the momentum in favour of KKR with 32 required from last three overs.

Narine returned with figures of 4-0-14-2 to give KKR a fine chance but de Lange’s penultimate over in which he leaked 18 runs gave the momentum back to Chennai.

Earlier, put into bat, KKR put up yet another stupendous opening partnership when Gambhir and McCullum put on their season’s second highest 99 (behind 113 vs Pune Warriors).

The skipper once again led from front with a 43-ball 62 (6×4, 3×6), his sixth half century in 10 matches, and together with McCullum (37 from 29 balls; 4×4, 1×6) the duo decimated the Chennai attack.

At one point, it seemed that Dhoni’s ploy to field on this difficult track had backfired in their must-win match to keep their play-off hopes alive.

But another shoddy performance by KKR middle order meant that the home team was pegged back to 158 for six.

In fact, had it not been for Debabrata Das’s cameo of 19 from 10 balls with two boundaries and one six, KKR could have been in trouble to reach the 150-run mark.

From 99 for no loss in 12th over, KKR were reduced to 128 for five in the 18th over as Kallis (4), Manoj Tiwary (12) and Yusuf Pathan (11) failed to capitalise on the fine start.

KKR were 86 for no loss after 10 overs but lost two wickets for 26 runs in remaining five overs for Chennai to make a stunning turnaround.

Left-arm spinner Jakati, who leaked 17 runs from his first two overs, made a successful return in his second spell with 2-9 that included the prized scalps of Kallis and Gambhir to peg back the Knight Riders.

It was a clinical start by Gambhir and McCullum who made their intention loud and clear, taking charge of Chennai pace spearhead Ben Hilfenhuas.

Gambhir pulled Hilfenhaus over square leg while McCullum came down the track to hit him over mid on in the same over to unsettle the Aussie’s rhythm.

Gambhir hit Jakati for a six and followed it up with a boundary as KKR raced to 50 for no loss in the sixth over. Jakati then dropped a sitter from McCullum in the same over when the New Zealander was on 11.

Gambhir notched his sixth fifty of the season from 31 balls that included five fours and three sixes.

McCullum also started firing at the other end, hitting Raina for a six as things started to look ominous for Chennai.

The duo bettered their previous best stand of 95 (vs Royal Challengers Bangalore) but a rare mix up in the middle and a direct hit by Dhoni yielded the visitors a much-needed breakthrough in 11.3 overs.
