Gayle ton guides Bangalore to easy win over Delhi Daredevils: IPL 2012 Posted: 17 May 2012 12:58 PM PDT Chris Gayle blasted a whirlwind unbeaten 128, studded with incredible 13 sixes, as Royal Challengers Bangalore thumped Delhi Daredevils by 21 runs to keep their play-offs hopes alive in the Indian Premier League on Thursday. Even with this win, RCB are static on the fifth position in the IPL Points Table, while Delhi continue to hold top spot. With his first hundred of the season, Gayle became the first batsman to score 700 or more runs in a single edition in the history of IPL as RCB scored a mammoth 215 for one after being invited to bat at the Feroze Shah Kotla ground. The marauding West Indian surpassed Sachin Tendulkar’s 618 runs which the Mumbai Indians batsman had scored in 2009-10 while Gayle now has scored 706 runs this season. With his skipper Virat Kohli (73 not out off 53 balls), Gayle rattled up an unconquered 204-run stand, second-highest partnership for any wicket in IPL, to set up the huge target. Gayle’s 62-ball knock was also the second highest individual score by a batsman in the IPL history, second only to Brendon McCullum’s unbeaten 158, which the Kiwi had hit in the inaugural edition in 2008 for Kolkata Knight Riders. With someone such as Virender Sehwag missing from the line-up, it was a daunting task for Delhi to chase down such a huge target and all they could manage was 194 for nine in their 20 overs. Nevertheless, it was a spirited reply by Delhi with Ross Taylor top-scoring with his a 26-ball 55 and Y Venugopal Rao contributing 36 runs. Andre Russell (31 off 15) hit some lusty shots towards the end but it was too late for Delhi. RCB pace colleagues Zaheer Khan (3/38), Prasanth Parameswaran (3/30) and R Vinay Kumar (2/35) shared eight wickets among them. RCB are now fifth with 17 points and have their last match against Deccan Chargers on May 20. Chennai Super Kings’ defeat at the hands of Kings XI Punjab earlier today helped Bangalore’s cause as the defending champions stayed on 17 points with no more their league engagements remaining.(PTI)

It was a good wicket to hit through the line. It’s natural feeling, to hit sixes. There were certain things in my mind which were putting me off. Virat played well and we put on a good stand. If I get a maiden over at the top of the order, it doesn’t matter. Till I am at the crease, the runs will flow. If someone had told me that the world record (for maximum sixes) was nearer, I would have gone for them. Chris Gayle is the Man of the Match Mahela Jayawardene: Gayle is in tremendous form, especially on a small ground like this, it’s difficult. Virat batted well and they put on a good stand. 200 was chaseable, lot of positives out of this game. Viru was sick, he could not get out of bed. Morne was rested because we have back to back games and he needed rest. We got another game, we are a happy camp. These things happen, not the first time it has happened. We have played good cricket throughout the tournament. If we meet RCB again, we will try to make sure he (Gayle) does not repeat it. Virat Kohli: It was an important game. The bowlers bowled exceptionally well and today was the day when Chennai did not bat well. I am embarrased with the Karbon Kamaal catch because all the catches were simple. A fielder was injured and hence I did not take the third run. I took no major decision, it was something that I chose to do so it is no big deal. We need to win against Delhi. Adam Gilchrist is the MoM for his swashbuckling unbeaten 64. He also took four catches. Dhoni: Punjab bowled really well. They were bowling in the right areas and we tried to get out of it. We kept trying but we lost wickets regularly. They bowled a good line. During the course of the 16 games, we needed to win most of the games. We will wait and watch. We will do what we need to do.

IPL 2012 Preview: Chennai Super Kings vs Kings XI Punjab, 17 May 2012 Posted: 16 May 2012 05:30 PM PDT On a three-match winning streak, Chennai Super Kings will look to seal their play-off berth when they take on an erratic Kings XI Punjab in a crucial preliminary match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2012. The tournament in its final leg, there is a mad scramble to bag the three available spots in the top-four to make the play-off cut after table-toppers Delhi Daredevils became the first team to qualify with 20 points from 14 matches. Chennai, playing their last league match tomorrow, are on the fourth spot after eight wins and six losses that left their points tally at 17. Kings XI Punjab also have an outside chance of making the play-offs provided they win both their remaining matches and some results go their way. Punjab are currently seventh in the list with seven wins and an equal number of losses. Led by stand-in captain David Hussey, KXIP have the daunting task of beating tough teams such as Chennai and Delhi Daredevils here. Opener Mandeep Singh has been the prolific scorer for his team accumulating. Australian Shaun Marsh, former Pakistani all-rounder Azhar Mahmood and young South African David Miller too have shown that the home side’s batting has depth. But the defeat against Delhi in the away match would have surely affected the team’s morale. Medium pacers Praveen Kumar, Parvinder Awana and Mahmood who can bat as well, have done a decent job in the bowling department and the team’s fielding, too, has improved as the tournament has progressed. Chennai, on the other hand, have gained momentum as the tournament approaches its business end. They upstaged Kolkata Knight Riders in their previous match and that in front of a packed Eden Gardens. And Chennai would be eyeing revenge against Kings XI Punjab for handing them a loss in front of their home fans last month.
