Kings XI Punjab beat Bangalore by 4 wickets: IPL 2012

Posted: 02 May 2012 12:33 PM PDT

Piyush Chawla (6 not out) hit a massive six on the penultimate ball to help Kings XI Punjab register a nervous 4-wicket victory over Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League match at M Chinnaswamy stadium on Wednesday.

Three run outs in eight balls at the end make the match very tight after it looked like a catwalk for Punjab. Kings XI needed 13 runs off 22 balls with seven wickets left at the time top-scorer Nitin Saini (50) got out.

Saini and David Hussey (45) added 73 runs for the third wicket to lead the run chase after a couple of useful partnerships upfront.

Chasing 159-run target, Punjab stuttered in the end due to freak run outs but managed to win with a ball to spare after top-order batsmen fired in unison.

The chase became an edgy affair when Abhishek Nayar (2), Hussey and Azhar Mahmood (2) were run out in quick succession to give Bangalore a ray of hopes.

But the less than 8 runs per over target was not enough at the end for the Kings XI batsmen as they put on useful partnerships during the chase.

Punjab lost Saini in the seventeenth over to start the freak downfalls which almost cost them the match.

Mandeep Singh (43) and Shuan Marsh (8) fell after giving an aggressive start to Punjab run chase.

Off-spinner KP Appanna dismissed Mandeep in the ninth over to reduce Punjab to 73/2 in 8.5 overs. Mandeep hit a six and six boundaries in his 30-ball blitzkrieg to lead the run chase and stitched two quick thirty-run stands for Kings XI.

Mandeep put on 35 runs for the second wicket with wicketkeeper batsman Nitin Saini after 38 for the opening wicket with Marsh.

Marsh hit just one four in his sedate 10-ball innings before Andrew McDonald got better of him in the fifth over.

Kings XI raced to fifty in 5.3 overs as they look to be on track of their target.

Sent in to bat, Chris Gayle scored fiery 71 off 42 balls to help Royal Challengers post 158/5 against Kings XI.

Royal Challengers were heading for much more before Azhar Mahmood (3-20) produced a terrific final over to restrict them below 160 runs. Mahmood dismissed AB de Villiers (17) and Andrew McDonald (9) in the last over and conceded just 4 runs.

Bangalore lost Virat Kohli (45) and Chris Gayle (71) in quick succession after the duo added a quick-fire 119 runs stand to resurrect their innings.

Leg-spinner Piyush Chawla dismissed Kohli in the seventeenth over to reduce Bangalore to 134/4 in 16.4 overs, soon after Mahmood struck in the previous over to break the imposing Gayle-Kohli partnership.

Gayle hit four massive sixes and six boundaries in his whirlwind 41-ball knock to lead the Bangalore run charge. The West Indian batsman raced to his fifty in just 32 balls after starting his innings cautiously.

Kohli too joined the party to regain his lost form in the match as he smashed two big sixes and three fours in his 42-ball 45 innings.

The Gayle-Kohli duo put on 100 runs stand in just 70 balls and took Bangalore’s total to 100 in 13 overs. After an early blow, they resurrect the Bangalore innings patiently before breaking free in the second half of their innings.

Praveen Kumar gave away just eight runs in his 4 overs to put a check on the imposing Gayle in the first half as the hosts reached fifty in 9.1 overs.

Pacer Ryan Harris struck in the second over to provide Kings XI an early breakthrough against Royal Challengers.

Harris clean bowled Bangalore opener Mayank Agarwal (7) with his third ball to reduce the hosts to 7/1 in 1.3 overs. Agarwal smacked a six off Harris’s very first delivery but two balls later the Aussie pacer had the last laugh when he hit the off-stump with an amazing out-swinger.

Earlier, Kings XI stand-in skipper David Hussey won the toss and decided to field against Royal Challengers on Wednesday.

Hussey is captaining Kings XI again as Adam Gilchrist is still recovering from torn hamstrings.

The Punjab side has made three changes in the playing XI. They have included Ryan Harris in David Miller’s place. Paras Dogra and Abhishek Nayar have replaced Bhargav Bhatt and Bipul Sharma.

Bangalore have brought in Andrew McDonald, Asad Pathan in place of Tillkaratne Dilshan and Harshal Patel.

Kings XI Punjab vs Royal Challengers Bangalore Post Match Presentation IPL 2012

Posted: 02 May 2012 12:08 PM PDT

Mahmood: I am enjoying my cricket, two wins in a row against some tough teams like CSK and RCB is always good. We are all working hard and enjoying each other’s company. We needed to do something when Gayle was going well. This award is for my daughter. She used to ask as to when I would get an MoM award.

Azhar Mahmood is the MoM for his 3/20

Hussey: We almost snatched defeat from the jaws of victory but managed to hold up well in the end. We will now go to Mohali and take on RR. Azhar Mahmood bowled superbly in the death and PK did extremely well giving away just 8 runs in his four overs. Ryan Harris had a slight injury but he is a tough man and will comeback.

Vettori: Every team has a few match winners and we need to do well to win close games. There are some big matches coming up and we need to get on a roll. The last 5 overs were interesting for both sides, we got only 30 odd runs in those overs and that cost us. We need to get back to winning ways.

Husssey: Gilly is coming up well and should be back very soon. We need to win today’s match and join in the cluster of teams with 10 points. We will have a bowl. There might be some moisture and we hope to exploit the surface. We have made a few changes. Ryan Harris, Abhishek Nayar are in the team. David Miller misses out.

Vettori: We had 3 wins in a row before losing badly in our last game. The wicket will be pretty good over the entire stretch of the game. We would have probably bowled on this pitch. Aamir Sohail suggests a Pro-40 league to PCB

Posted: 02 May 2012 03:25 AM PDT

Former captain and chief selector, Aamir Sohail has suggested that the Pakistan cricket Board should launch its own Pro-40 tournament with the match split into two innings of 20 overs each.

“Thrills and skills will be the selling points of such an event,” Sohail said on a television channel.

Although Sachin Tendulkar had sometime back called for the 50-over ODIs to be split into four innings of 25 overs each, this is the first time someone has proposed a 40 over game split into two innings of 20 overs each.

Sohail said there was a feeling in the cricket fraternity that T20 cricket was at times devoid of skills and focused on only providing entertainment to the viewers.

“I think if we can launch a Pro-40 event in Pakistan with two innings of 20 overs for one side it would provide both things. It will require skills and also produce plenty of thrills,” he said.

Sohail said PCB needs to look at fresh ideas to rejuvenate domestic cricket and even otherwise since the country had been deprived of international cricket for three years now.

Sohail pointed out that Pakistan in the past had always been in the forefront of tabling revolutionary ideas in international cricket.

“Pakistan played a lead role in turning the World Cup into a commercial powerhouse and also introduced the concept of neutral umpires. Our domestic cricket format was once studied and admired by other countries as well,” he noted.

Former captain, Rashid Latif conceded that fresh ideas and concepts were required in Pakistan cricket since there was too much attention on T20 cricket now.

“In our domestic events while people flock to see the T20 events there is hardly any interest in the one-day or first class matches. Something radical should be done to involve the people in other cricket besides T20 matches,” he said.

The PCB has been trying to launch its own premier league T20 competition and officials say three more presentations from companies are scheduled for next week. (PTI)

IPL 2012 Preview: Royal Challengers Bangalore vs Kings XI Punjab, 02 May 2012

Posted: 01 May 2012 05:30 PM PDT

Dropped to the fifth position from third in the points table, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) would look to return to winning ways against an improving Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) at Bangalore on Wednesday to brighten up their play-off chances in the fifth edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The loss against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by 47 runs in their last game notwithstanding, RCB would look to draw inspiration from the five-wicket win against Kings XI Punjab in the last encounter between the two sides at Mohali.

But RCB will have to fight tooth and nail against Kings XI to conjure up a win at the Chinnaswamy Stadium.

It has been a mixed outing for RCB so far in the tournament, winning four games and losing as many from nine outings with one match against Chennai Super Kings being washed out.

RCB’s foreign recruits — Chris Gayle, AB de Villiers and to some extent Tillakartane Dilshan — have played stellar roles in the victories, but the form of its domestic players has been a major worry for the Bangalore outfit.

Gayle and de Villiers have been at their devastating best with the bat, but find themselves waging a lonely battle time and again because of the lack of support from domestic players.

Virat Kohli, Saurabh Tiwary, Mayank Agarwal and Cheteshwar Pujara all have failed to contribute with the bat so far, thereby putting extra pressure on the foreign players, especially Gayle to do the bulk of the scoring.

After showing great promise in Australia, Kohli has failed to live up to his reputation, scoring just 147 runs from eight innings with only one half century against his name.

But the young Delhi batsman would be desperate to turn things around and strike form in tomorrow’s match.

RCB would look a completely different side and be more formidable if Kohli gets among runs, which would also boost the confidence of Tiwary, Agarwal, Pujara and others.

Among pacers, Zaheer Khan has impressed in patches up but R Vinay Kumar and young Harshal Patel have been expensive.

Spin wizard Muttaiah Muralitharan did well in almost all the games he played, but the RCB team management is in a dilemma how to fit in both skipper Daniel Vettori and the Sri Lankan in the scheme of things.

Young left-arm spinner KP Appanna, who fashioned a win against Rajasthan Royal by claiming four wickets for 19 runs, too has impressed all and sundry in his limited outings.

On the flip side, Kings XI is slowly and steadily finding their form after a slow start to the tournament.

And come tomorrow, the Punjab outfit would look to extend their winning run following the the seven-run victory over defending champions Chennai Super Kings in their last game.

Kings XI has eight points from nine games with four wins and five loses and the visitors would look to increase their tally to keep alive their play-off chances.

But Punjab’s misery is compounded by the absence of their skipper Gilchrist, who is out with a hamstring injury.

In the absence of Gilchrist, Kings XI would be banking heavily on stand-in-skipper David Hussey to deliver the goods.

The younger among the Hussey brothers, has so far scored 210 runs from eights innings at an average of 30.

Besides Hussey, another Australian Shaun Marsh has also been amongst runs. He has so far notched up 258 runs in nine innings and has been instrumental in Kings XI’s wins.

Young Mandeep Singh, who has 234 runs under his belt, would also like to carry on his good showing up the order.

On the bowling front, the inclusion of Parwinder Awana and Azhar Mahmood has added a sting to Kings XI’s pace attack, which also has a wily customer in Praveen Kumar.

Kings XI’s spin department is being led by leg-spinner Piyush Chawla, who has so far picked up 11 wickets from nine games with an economy rate of 6.26 runs per over.

But the weather God can spoil the home team’s party yet again as the local Met department has forecast isolated thundershowers with 30 per cent chances of precipitation by 2100 hours on Wednesday. (PTI)
