Rajasthan Royals thrash Kings XI Punjab by 43 runs: IPL 2012

Posted: 05 May 2012 12:36 PM PDT

Rajasthan Royals produced an all-round show as they spanked Kings XI Punjab by 43 runs to snap their four-match losing streak in the Indian Premier League.

With this win, KXIP are placed sixth in the IPL Points Table.

Electing to bat, Rajasthan posted a challenging 177 for six with all their top-order batsmen, barring Ajinkya Rahane, contributing and then restricted KXIP to 134 for eight at the PCA Stadium on which the ball came nicely on to the bat.

Chasing 178 for a win, KXIP were in the game only for a brief while when opener Shaun Marsh (34) was going great guns with some lusty hits but once he was out in the ninth over it was all over for the home side as they lost wickets at regular intervals.

The match was as good as over by the 15th over when KXIP were 97 for five and the asking rate had shot up 16 an over.

Johan Botha, Shane Watson and Shaun Tait scalped two KXIP batsmen each while Siddarth Trivedi and Stuart Binny took a wicket each.

With the win today, Rajasthan jumped to the fifth spot in the league table with 10 points from 11 matches while KXIP occupy the sixth place with same 10 points from 11 matches but one rung down on lesser net run rate.

KXIP were on the backfoot early with opener Mandeep Singh falling to Watson in the second over as his pull shot went straight to mid-on fielder Siddarth Trivedi.

Marsh then milked Ankeet Chavan 18 runs in the seventh over as he hit the bowler for three fours and a six to give the home side hope for a win.

But, just after that big over came the blow as captain David Hussey perished while going for a pull shot only to find a running Brad Hodge taking a good catch as KXIP were reduced to 55 for three in the eighth over.

The home side slumped to further trouble as Marsh followed his captain to the dressing room in the next over as he was cleanbowled by Botha.

By the halfway mark, KXIP were in dire straits at 65 for four and the asking rate shot past 11 an over. Boundaries were needed but they were not coming.

Azhar Mahmood (24) and debutant Gurkeerat Singh (23) tried hard for boundaries but to no avail. The former perished while trying for big shots, cleanbowled by a slow delivery from Binny as KXIP were reduced to 97 for five at the end of 15th over, needing 81 runs for a win.

Rajasthan could have shut out the match sooner rather than later but for their butter-fingered fielders as the visitors dropped at least three catches.

But, the home side could not capitalise on them. Rather, their run chase was all over as the asking rate shot past 16 an over by the end of the 15th over and with half of their batsmen gone.

By the end of the 17th over, the asking rate had gone past 20 an over as Gurkeerat, Piyush Chawla (5) and Rayan Harris (3) could not give a fight as the home side fell short by a whopping 43 runs.

Earlier, Rajasthan scored 177 for six with contributions from captain Rahul Dravid (46), Watson (36 off 17 balls), Ashok Menaria (34 off 27 balls) and Brad Hodge (36 off 23 balls).

For KXIP, Australian pacer Ryan Harris scalped four wickets for 34 runs while leg-spinner Piyush Chawla took two wickets for 38. All the KXIP bowlers went for runs but they came back strongly in the second part of the innings to restrict Rajasthan to 177 for six.

Watson was the most aggressive of the Rajasthan batsman as he hit four fours and two sixes while Dravid, who hit eight four in his 39-ball innings, held one end initially before he was out in the 14th over.

However, the visitors quickly put the tournament’s top run getter’s loss behind them as Watson cut loose with Dravid also in great touch.

When Harris was back to bowl his second over, Dravid hit three consecutive boundaries of him followed by two hits to the fence of Praveen Kumar and another one from Watson.

Both batsmen hit some lusty shots of medium pacer Praveen Kumar, who gave away just eight runs in the previous match.

Medium pacer Parvinder Awana also came under heavy fire from Watson who hit him two boundaries and a six when the bowler was brought in the sixth over in which he gave away 19 runs.

Dravid and Watson weaved a 69-run partnership for the second wicket before the Australian fell to Chawla in the eighth with Harris making a valiant diving effort at long off to take the catch.

After Watson’s fall, left-handed Menaria walked in and Royals reached 100 runs in the 12th over.

Dravid was caught by Awana off Harris in the 14th over and Menaria followed soon, giving a catch to Gurkeerat Singh off Piyush Chawla.

Hodge and Johan Botha (not out 14) batted brilliantly and they punished Mahmood and Harris. Hodge, after hitting a six and a four off Harris in the final over, fell to the same bowler.

Kings XI Punjab Vs Rajasthan Royals Post Match Presentation IPL 2012

Posted: 05 May 2012 12:19 PM PDT

Hussey: 178 was a par score. We didn’t turn up with the ball, on the field or the bat. One of the worst performances so far for us. We just have to refresh quickly, we were on a high after the win over RCB and that has hurt us now. We have to do it the hard way now, win 4 out of 5.

Dravid: Someone like Tait, if he can get going, will create doubts in any batsman’s mind. Unfortunately Cooper got injured, so it was nice to see Tait do well. The conditions forced us to make a lot of changes and credit to the bowlers for doing well. We’re in the same position as the KXIP now, we have to win 4 out of 5. We have been unlucky at times, we’ve lost some in the last ball. We should have won in Delhi, but that’s the nature of the game. It’s not going to be easy, it’s going to be a tough competition from here on.

Watson: Nice to be able to put in a performance and get a few out of the middle. The wicket was like the Gabba wicket at home and it was nice to see some bounce and pace. I was enjoying it, you don’t always get wickets like this in India. 2009 IPL kick started my career and I owe a lot to the IPL. We’re all having a lot of fun here. Warne and Dravid are 2 different characters. The fact that he speaks Hindi in the dressing room helps the local boys as well.

Watson is the Man of the Match

Kolkata Knight Riders beat Pune Warriors by 7 runs: IPL 2012

Posted: 05 May 2012 09:01 AM PDT

Kolkata Knight Riders prevailed in their prestige fight against Pune Warriors, defeating the Sourav Ganguly-led side by seven runs in a thrilling Indian Premier League match.

Dubbed as the ‘Battle Royale’ of this edition of IPL, Gautam Gambhir and his boys held their nerves as Pune batting again faltered at the death to slump to their fifth consecutive defeat.

The loss means Pune has put paid to any hopes whatsoever of making it to the play offs, while KKR have consolidated their second position in the standings with 15 points from 11 outings.

Chasing 151 for win, KKR restricted Pune to 143 for eight with Ganguly emerging as the top-scorer with 36 off 35 balls during which he hit four boundaries and a lone six.

Angelo Mathews (35) gave Ganguly good support from the other end as the duo stitched 73 runs for the sixth wicket to keep Pune in the hunt.

Earlier, KKR frittered away a rollicking start as Pune Warriors hit back in the last 10 overs to restrict the hosts to 150 for five at a jam-packed Eden Gardens.

Opting to bat, KKR skipper Gautam Gambhir (55 off 36 balls) played yet another captain’s knock with his third consecutive half-century and together with Brendon McCullum (42 off 43 balls) added 113 runs, their highest opening stand of the season.

The match lived up to its hype as fortunes kept on fluctuating till the last over when the asking rate got too high with 18 runs required off six deliveries.

KKR had the Warriors reeling at 55 for five at one stage before Ganguly and Mathews’ 73-run sixth wicket partnership which came off just 56 balls turned the match in the visitors favour.

Mathews hit Yusuf Pathan for three consecutive sixes to score 19 runs off the 15th over and put Pune in sight of a victory as the equation was reduced to 42 from 30 balls.

But Ganguly’s dismissal soon after he hit a six over long on off Rajat Bhatia in the 18th over swung the match in Pune’s favour.

With 12 needed from last three balls, Mathews perished in search of a big one, brilliantly caught by Laxmi Ratan Shukla at long on to virtually pocket the match for KKR.

Defending 150 for five, Marchant De Lange (3/34), who replaced an injured Brett Lee, gave KKR a perfect start with two wickets — Michael Clarke (1) and Robin Uthappa (16) — from his first two overs.

Reduced to 45/2 in the power play, Pune found themselves in desparate need of a parternship when Iqbal Abdulla and Jacques Kallis ensured further slide for Ganguly’s men as Pune recorded yet another top-order failure.

Talented Steven Smith looked in fine nick during his 16-ball 14-run knock before a dubious lbw decision by Shavir Tarapore brought an end to his stay at the crease.

The dismissal ended the spectators anxious wait to witness Ganguly bat as the city’s heartthrob made a dramatic entry at number seven position with his team tottering at 55 for five in 8.2 overs.

Narine troubled Ganguly with his mysterious off-spin in the wicket maiden over but the former India skipper broke the shackles in the next over with two consecutive boundaries of Kallis.

Ganguly kept the momentum going, unsettling Narine in the next over forcing KKR to take the West Indies spinner out of the attack.

KKR were going steady till Mathews exploded in the 15th over, smashing Pathan for 19 runs. But it was not to be Pune’s day as they fell eventually short of the target.

Earlier, KKR would be disappointed as their star-studded middle-order flopped yet again. They scored just 29 runs in the last five overs and lost three wickets.

Pune were under the pump when Gambhir and McCullum were batting but once left-hander fell to Murali Karthik and McCullum became a victim of Sri Lankan paceman Mathews, complexion of the match changed.

In the first half of the KKR innings, erratic bowling by Pune — they leaked nine wides inside the powerplay — helped the cause of the hosts as they raced to 68 for no loss in the first six overs.

Gambhir made his intention clear in the very second ball, pulling Karthik over fine-leg for a boundary and hooked Dinda’s bouncer attempt over midwicket in the next over.

Gambhir then smashed Ashok Dinda for consecutive six and a four to collect 19 runs from his over.

The pressure was clearly palpable in the Warriors camp as Dinda dropped an easy sitter, giving McCullum a reprieve on 28 as KKR opening duo bettered their previous best — 95 against Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Gambhir completed his third consecutive half-century, and fourth overall in the ongoing IPL, with an elegant push off Wayne Parnell to the fine leg.

With Gambhir leading from the front, yet again, KKR progressed at 10 run-rate as Ganguly’s hapless bowlers found it difficult to break the partnership.

Kartik gave the much-needed breakthrough for Pune taking the dangerman Gambhir when he stepped out only to find Mithun Manhas at long off.

Just when it was going out of control, Mathews brought respite to Ganguly’s camp when he raced through his amazing spell of 4-0-17-2, taking the prized scalps of McCullum and Kallis (1).

Struggling Pathan and Debabrata Das found the going tough in the death overs as Pune made a strong comeback. (PTI)

IPL 2012: Rajasthan Royals elects to bat against Kings XI Punjab

Posted: 05 May 2012 08:16 AM PDT

Toss: Rajasthan Royals have won the toss and elected to bat

Dravid: It is getting to a stage where we can’t make too many mistakes. We haven’t played bad cricket but we just haven’t got over the line. We do have a lot of inexperienced young bowlers and we are working very hard with them in the nets. A lot of young players are trying their best and it is a learning curve. Mohali is always a good cricket wicket, there will be something in it for the bowlers if they bend their backs. We are going to bat because we want to set a good total on the board and put pressure on the opposition. Hopefully we can put up a score that can make the opposition commit a few mistakes. Shaun Tait comes in for Owais Shah and Brad Hogg is replaced by Botha.

David Hussey: I think we just play with a lot of courage and our fielding ahs been really good. I think Saini’s keeping has been brilliant and Mandeep Singh is a busy player. Gilly is going fantastic, he isn’t too far away from recovering. The last couple of times we have played here we have come out with a win. It looks a little green and they are playing Tait today so it should be interesting.

Gambhir: So far it has been good and hopefully we can continue the same way. The entire team has been performing well as a unit. Hopefully we can play some good cricket and get the results. It is always a good feeling for a captain when you have a lot of quality foreign players. Today we have gone in with Marchant de Lange instead of Lee. No doubt about batting first. Whenever we have played freely we have played well so hopefully we can do that today. We just want to give our batsmen some freedom to play well.

Sourav: It feels great to play in Kolkata again. I have played here before and it hasn’t changed. There are some nerves. We have to try and get back to winning ways, it is a new day and hopefully we can do well. This wicket is different from the one that we played on in the Ranji season, it doesn’t have as much of grass as it did during the season. I would have batted as well but I don’t think it will change much over the 40 overs. We have got Mathews in.

Pitch report: The wicket looks pretty flat and shouldn’t have any assistance for the seam bowlers. The track does look conducive to spin and Navjot Singh Sidhu reckons that the team that wins the toss should bat first.

IPL 2012 Preview: Kings XI Punjab vs Rajasthan Royals, 05 May 2012

Posted: 04 May 2012 06:30 PM PDT

On recovery trail after a poor start to the tournament, King XI Punjab would be keen to keep up the momentum when they take on the floundering Rajasthan Royals in an IPL match on Saturday.

On Wednesday, Kings XI pulled off a stunning victory over Royal Challengers Bangalore in the latter’s backyard, a win that catapulted them to the top four teams leaving behind even defending champions Chennai Super Kings who have also suffered defeat at their hands in their own den.

It has been a great feat for the franchise, which started with two successive defeats and hamstring injury to their captain Adam Gilchrist even before the tournament had reached the midway stage.

Punjab have won five from 10 outings and have an upcoming game against struggling Deccan Chargers and table toppers Delhi Daredevils. They will also be hoping to win on home turf when they meet Rajasthan tomorrow and correct their home record which has not been good this season.

Former Pakistani all-rounder Azhar Mahmood’s presence in the side after his visa issue was resolved has meant that Punjab have struck the right balance.

The 37-year-old Mahmood, now a British national, seems to have infused new energy in the side, which looked down in the dumps at one stage.

The aggressive medium pacer has not only impressed with his wicket-taking abilities earning three scalps in the previous match and holding his nerve in crunch situations, but also made useful contributions with the bat.

Stand-in captain David Hussey’s leadership has revived the sagging fortunes of the team and he has also struck some brilliant knocks making 255 runs in the tournament so far.

Under him, the team’s fielding seems to have improved a lot.

Gilchrist had earlier heaped praise on medium pacer Praveen Kumar for doing a fine job of containment, though he has been unlucky not to get as many wickets.

The inclusion of Ryan Harris will further boost Punjab ‘s bowling arsenal.

Meanwhile, Rajasthan Royals would be low on morale after suffering successive defeats at the hands of Delhi Daredevils.

They were undone by Virender Sehwag’s heroics with the bat and young bowler Pawan Negi’s sensational bowling effort in the previous game.

The Rahul Dravid-led side will be desperate to end the losing streak knowing well that another loss may almost shut the door on their chances of making the semifinals.

Rajasthan have so far won just four out of 10 and are placed seventh in the points table. They will be hoping that Australia’s prolific all-rounder Shane Watson, comes good tomorrow after his failure with the bat in last match.

Dravid and his opening partner and Ajinkya Rahane (458 runs so far including a century) lend strength to Rajasthan batting in the top order, but the middle order that includes Brag Hodge, Owais Shah and Ashok Menaria, will have to get their act together.

Watson and Pankaj Singh will also have to bowl their best if Rajasthan are to fancy their chances. (PTI)

IPL 2012 Preview: Kolkata Knight Riders vs Pune Warriors, 05 May 2012

Posted: 04 May 2012 04:30 PM PDT

Sourav Ganguly’s Pune Warriors may have lost four matches in a row but they would find themselves at ‘home’ as loyalties will be split when they face Kolkata Knight Riders in an emotionally-charged up IPL contest on Saturday.

The stakes for the match are high with die-hard Ganguly fans rooting for the contest as a revenge for city’s icon after being snubbed by his former franchise following a bitter association for the first three seasons.

From celebrities and experts to commoners, everybody is eagerly waiting to see the former India skipper lead the side from the visitor’s dressing room at the Eden Gardens, a venue where he grew up as a cricketer.

But going by the form book, all is not well for Ganguly’s soldiers, while the Knight Riders are on the right track to seal the last-four berth, placed comfortably in the second spot of the IPL ladder.

Having lost six of their last seven games with their latest defeat last night to Mumbai Indians, Ganguly and Co are languishing ahead of bottom-placed Deccan Chargers.

But the match at Ganguly’s home, aided by the partisan crowd, could give Pune the perfect opportunity to make a comeback.

Their defeat by the narrowest of margin — one run — at their backyard yesterday has compounded Ganguly’s misery.

Chasing a mere 121, Ganguly’s creepy-crawly innings meant that Pune slowly made the task difficult even as a well-played Mithun Manhas remained unbeaten at the other end with a doughty 42.

Ganguly looked woefully out of sorts in his 12 from 22 balls, unable to earn anything more than the difficult singles.

He showed glimpses of old when he lifted Lasith Malinga up for a boundary but only to be bowled in the same over for a 24-ball 16 with the asking rate climbing to nine.

But with the never-say-die attitude of the retired India skipper, it remains to be seen how he brings himself out of the rut or think of gracefully leaving the stage with a more capable Aussie skipper Michael Clarke waiting in the wings.

Even against Deccan Chargers, a tactical blunder of bringing himself to bowl at the death after leaking 15 runs from his first two overs cost them the match.

It’s time he rethinks his strategy or rejig his line-up, bringing world-class Bangladeshi batsman Tamim Iqbal in place of Jesse Ryder.

Tamim came to the IPL with four consecutive half-centuries in the Asia Cup — one of them against India — but was still left out and with the tournament already past the halfway stage, it remains to be seen how the thinktank keeps him to warm the bench ahead of a must win matches.

With Ashok Dinda back in business in their last match after recovering from a side strain, bowling should not be of much concern.

In sharp contrast is the home camp which is on a four-match winning run with skipper Gautam Gambhir, leading the side by example.

Gambhir has shown maturity in batting as well as his captaincy. His gesture of handing over his Man-of-the-Match award to a young Debabrata Das in their last match has earned him a lot of accolades.

With 16 needed off 12 chasing 140 in Chennai, the fall of Gambhir after an entertaining 63 had caused a scare following yet another failure of Yusuf Patan.

But Das showed nerves of steel playing the role of a finisher with a four-ball 11 that included two match-winning boundaries.

He may have been removed from Team India vice-captaincy, but Gambhir has been in scintillating form leading the Knight Riders to a comfort zone in their pursuit of a play-off berth.

The left-hander is easily the Knight Riders’ best batsman so far, with 365 runs at 143.70 strike rate in a star-studded batting line-up that is yet to fire though.

The likes of Yusuf, with a terrible average of 6.85 at 96.00 strike rate, Jacques Kallis (22.87 at 100.00), Manoj Tiwary (24.83 at 104.92) and Brendon McCullum (13.50 at 97.59) have been dark spots in a side that performed well as a bowling and fielding unit.

The spin pair of Iqbal Abdulla and Sunil Narine, together with Rajat Bhatia’s slow medium and Brett Lee’s sheer pace has done wonders on the tailor-made difficult Eden track.

With the dangerous batting line-up they boast of, the Knight Riders have emerged as one of the strong contenders to win the trophy this time.

But rain could play spoilsport in the much-anticipated clash. It had been the case here on two previous occasions and the Met forecast been no different this time. (PTI)
