Mumbai Indians snatch thrilling 1-run win over Pune Warriors: IPL 2012

Posted: 03 May 2012 12:41 PM PDT

Mumbai Indians dished out a superlative bowling performance to eke out a one run win over Pune Warriors in a nail-biting Indian Premier League match on Thursday.

Pune recorded its fourth succesive defeat this season. Mumbai registered their second win in a row to consolidate their third spot on the IPL Points Table.

Set to defend a modest 120 for nine, Mumbai bowlers rose to the occasion to restrict Pune to 119 for six in their 20 overs, thereby falling short by just a run.

Skipper Harbhajan Singh led from the front picking up two wickets for just 18 runs, while Lasith Malinga (2/25) was as usual at his lethal best towards the death.

Munaf Patel and Pragyan Ojha also did their bid ending up with identical figures of one for 24.

Mithun Manhas scored an unbeaten 42 off 34 balls to keep Pune in the hunt but in the end it was not enough.

Earlier, asked to bowl, Pune produced a clinical bowling and fielding display to restrict Mumbai to the paltry score at the Subrata Roy Sahara Stadium.

Young Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Ashish Nehra shared four wickets between them as Pune bowlers stuck to their task from the onset, barring a few overs in the middle.

Pune bowlers were complemented well by their fielders as they inflicted as many as four run outs.

Sachin Tendulkar top-scored for Mumbai a 35-ball 34 and together with James Franklin (25) added 50 runs for the opening stand, which was the only highlight of the visitors’ innings.

Chasing 121 for win, Robin Uthappa scored a run-a-ball 18 before he fell lbw to Patel.

Jesse Ryder and Michael Clarke then added 20 runs for the second wicket before the fomer was holed out by a running Perera at deep mid-on of the bowling off Harbhajan.

Harbhajan brought Mumbai back into the contest in his next over when he dismissed Clarke lbw even TV replays suggested the ball was going over the off stump but umpire Sudhir Asnani thought otherwise.

Ojha then went through the defence of in-form Steven Smith in the next over to tilt the match in Mumbai’s favour as Pune slumped to 47 for four at the halfway mark.

Skipper Sourav Ganguly (16) and Manhas played cautiously and stitched 47 runs off 42 balls for the fifth wicket to take Pune closer.

But the ever-reliable Malinga broke the partnership when he bowled Ganguly with a slower delivery and then dismissed Wayne Parnell in his next over to raise Mumbai’s hopes.

Needing 12 runs off the last over, Manhas and Kumar could only manage 10 as Pune continued its slide down the points table.

Earlier, electing to bat, Mumbai witnessed a sedate start as the first three overs yielded just seven runs, which included a maiden second over from Ashok Dinda (1/34).

But Tendulkar opened the floodgates for Mumbai, hitting Dinda for three consecutive fours to pick up 13 runs of his next over.

Franklin also joined the party soon and welcomed Nehra with a six and two fours to score 14 runs of his opening over.

It took Kumar to put the brakes on Mumbai when Franklin top-edged a simple catch to Mithun Manhas at long-on.

New man Rohit Sharma did not trouble the scorers much as he fell victim of a run out.

Tendulkar, on the other hand, went about his business in a quiet manner scoring his runs in ones and twos with occasional boundaries in between.

But after a dismal opening over, Nehra made a strong comeback in his second spell and scalped two wickets, which included that of dangerman Tendulkar.

The left-arm pacer tasted a big success in the 12th over when he accounted for a set Tendulkar, who edged one to Uthappa behind the stumps. Nehra then induced a top-edge from Robin Peterson (13) in his next over which Ganguly gladly accepted at long-off.

Ganguly was right on the money with his bowling changes as brought back into the attack in the 15th over, Kumar cleaned up Ambati Rayudu to pick up his second wicket.

Thisara Perera and skipper Harbhajan did not trouble the scorers at all as they fell in successive balls for ducks to sum a horrible outing for Mumbai batsmen.

Towards the end Dinesh Karthik (18 not out) and Lasith Malinga (14) stitched crucial 26 runs for the eighth wicket to help Mumbai touch the 120-run mark.

Mumbai Indians Vs Pune Warriors Post Match Presentation IPL 2012

Posted: 03 May 2012 12:35 PM PDT

Malinga: I am used to pressure. I always bowl in the last few overs. Nothing different this time either. At the end of the day I am happy. I know the length I can bowl and I can set my fields according to it.

Malinga is the MoM for his 2/25

Harbhajan: The wicket was not great to bat on. The ball stayed low and did not come on to the batsmen. Our bowling was superb. It is important to be active in the middle. We need to keep looking around.

Ganguly: I fancied this chase. It was not a good wicket to bat on. It was a big surprise for me, they have rolled up pretty decent surfaces so far. We lost too many wickets at the start, perhaps my dismissal was the turning point. I should have just taken a single against Malinga and waited for the others to bowl.

New Zealand annouces squad for West Indies tour, Jesse Ryder ignored

Posted: 03 May 2012 06:45 AM PDT

Troubled batsman Jesse Ryder was omitted Thursday from New Zealand’s 15-man Test squad to tour the WestIndies, with South Africa-born paceman Neil Wagner one of two new faces in the line-up.

Despite some strong performances in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Ryder remains on the outer with New Zealand selectors after a string of alcohol-fuelled incidents, most recently after a one-dayer in Napier in March.

The 27-year-old, who has also fought a well-publicised battle with his weight, took a break from the game after the Napier indiscretion, then set off for India to play in the IPL with a clinical psychologist in tow.

The therapy appears to have paid off, with Ryder averaging a respectable 32 for the Pune Warriors to stand 17th on the overall IPL runs tally.

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) did not address Ryder’s absence in a statement announcing the squad, but chief executive David White spelled out the selectors’ position last week, saying a recall was “a fair way” off.

“He needs to do a lot of work on a lot of things like fitness, attitude and be exemplary off the park,” White said.

Wagner and leg-spinner Tarun Nethula were the only uncapped players in the squad for two Tests against the West Indies, the first in Antigua starting July 25 and the second in Kingston from August 2.

Wagner was rushed straight into the squad after meeting residential eligibility criteria following his move from South Africa in 2008.

National selection manager Kim Littlejohn said the 26-year-old was an exciting prospect who had performed well in the domestic competition and earned an opportunity at Test level.

Wagner joins another South Africa native, Kruger van Wyk, in the New Zealand Test squad after he made his debut for the Black Caps against the touring Proteas in March.

The West Indies trip will be coach John Wright’s last tour in charge after he announced earlier this week he was resigning following tensions with NZC’s director of cricket John Buchanan.

The Test series will follow five one-dayers in the West Indies, plus two Twenty20 internationals, which will be played in the US state of Florida on June 30 and July 1. (AFP)

Squad: Ross Taylor (c), Trent Boult, Doug Bracewell, Dean Brownlie, Daniel Flynn, Mark Gillespie, Martin Guptill, Chris Martin, Brendon McCullum (wk), Tarun Nethula, Kruger van Wyk, Daniel Vettori, Neil Wagner, BJ Watling, Kane Williamson.

Pakistani cricket Mohammad Asif released from jail

Posted: 03 May 2012 06:19 AM PDT

Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Asif was today released from a British jail after completing half of his one-year sentence for his role in a spot-fixing scandal.

Asif, 29, was set free from the Canterbury Prison in Southeast England this morning, his London-based law firm SJS Solicitors said.

Asif was jailed in November after Southwark Crown Court in London found him guilty of conspiring to cheat and accept corrupt payments over deliberate no-balls bowled during the Lord’s Test against England in August 2010.

The fast bowler is still under ICC suspension and it is not known if he would challenge his seven year-ban (two years suspended).

His lawyer though had indicated yesterday that Asif will try to clear his name.

“I look forward to meeting him and helping him in his legal fight to restore the reputation he once had,” Asif’s lawyer Ravi Sukul had said.

Then Pakistan Test skipper Salman Butt and talented young fast bowler Mohammad Aamir were also jailed on the same charges.

Aamir was released in February after three months in jail while Butt is still serving a 30-month sentence.

Agent of these players Mazhar Majeed, who was exposed through a sting operatiob by now defunct ‘News of the World’, was also handed a 32-month sentence. (PTI)

IPL 2012 Preview: Mumbai Indians Vs Pune Warriors, 03 May 2012

Posted: 02 May 2012 04:30 PM PDT

Having lost three successive matches, Pune Warriors will look to arrest the slide when they take on neighbours Mumbai Indians in an Indian Premier League match at the Subrata Roy Sahara Stadium on Thursday.

Pune are currently lingering at the seventh place in the points table just ahead of Kings XI Punjab, with four wins from 10 matches.

Their second defeat to bottom-placed Deccan Chargers within a week has made their task to reach the last-four stage of the tournament even more difficult.

In fact, the Sourav Ganguly-led unit will have to win all their remaining matches to make a claim for the semi-final berth.

Mumbai Indians, on the other hand, are in a comfortable position compared to their rivals, but the team’s inconsistent performance has not allowed them to gain any momentum in the series so far.

Harbhajan Singh’s boys have so far managed 10 points from nine matches and are currently placed at No. 3.

Their batting line-up came under fire against the Chargers in their previous encounter at home. Though, the team managed to chase down the small total of 100 runs with five wickets in hand, their discomfort against quality pace bowling of Dayle Steyn was there for all to see.

The team banks heavily on Sachin Tendulkar at the top, and with the veteran not looking his best since returning from a finger injury things do not look very good for Mumbai and unsettled opening pair adds to their woes.

The team has so far experimented with their opening combo with Richard Levi, Adrian Blizzard, James Franklin, Davy Jacobs, Ambati Rayudu and T Suman all having a shot at the top spot.

Their middle order too has looked a bit susceptible, with Rohit Sharma looking good in patches and Franklin too not having a consistent run with the bat. Dinesh Karthik has also been out of colour.

Steven Smith has been consistent with the bat and Ganguly too has come good of late.

The real worry, however, is their bowling. Apart from Wayne Parnell and Bhuvneshwar Kumar nobody was impressive with the ball against Chargers and with Ashok Dinda still nursing a side strain, Pune will have to make their choices cautiously.

The team leaked around 80 runs in their last five overs against Chargers, something the skipper will have to address before taking on Mumbai. (PTI)

Teams:

PWI (probable): Manish Pandey, Sourav Ganguly (c), Michal Clarke, Robin Uthappa (wk), Marlon Samuels, Steven Smith, Mithun Manhas, Wayne Parnell, Murali Kartik, Ashish Nehra, Bhuvneshwar Kumar

MI (probable): Richard Levi, Sachin Tendulkar, Rohit Sharma, Dinesh Karthik(w), Ambati Rayudu, James Franklin, Robin Peterson, Harbhajan Singh(c), Lasith Malinga, Munaf Patel, RP Singh

Time: 14:30 GMT (20.00 local)
