Kings XI Punjab thrash Deccan Chargers by 25 runs: IPL 2012

Posted: 08 May 2012 12:26 PM PDT

Kings XI Punjab rode on a smashing half-century by Mandeep Singh and a superlative performance by their bowers to notch up a comfortable 25-run victory over Deccan Chargers in a lop-sided Indian Premier League match on Tuesday. By the virtue of this win, Punjab have now moved to No 5 position in the Points Table.

Invited to bat, Mandeep cracked a strokeful 75 off 48 balls to help Punjab post a challenging 170 for five in their stipulated 20 overs.

The visitors then returned to restrict the Chargers to 145 for eight to keep their hopes alive of reaching the play-off stage by reaching the fifth position in the IPL points table.

Chasing 171 to win, opener Daniel Harris (30) gave Deccan some hope initially but they failed to build partnerships and kept losing wickets in regular intervals.

For Punjab, Praveen Kumar, Parvinder Awana and David Hussey took two wickets each to emerge as the peak of the bowlers. They were supported well by Azhar Mahmood (0/31) and Piyush Chawla (1/33).

The chargers had a tottering start as they lost inform opener Shikhar Dhawan (8) and first down Parthiv Patel (17) cheaply to slip to 31 for two in the first five overs.

In the seventh over, Harris picked up a six off the first ball by Chawla and Cameron White played an inside-out shot in the last delivery to end the over with a boundary.

In the next over, Harris picked up a four off Ramesh Powar at the square leg area before whacking one at the mid-wicket area for another boundary.

Punjab then tightened things up with seamers Awana and Mahmood giving away just four and two runs in the next two over respectively.

However, it was skipper David Hussey who broke Deccan’s backbone, striking twice in four balls in his only over to dismiss the two set batsmen — Harris and White — and reduce Deccan to 71 for four. (PTI)

Mandeep Singh : Hussey always supports the youngsters. He and Gilchrist have shown great faith in me. I am very satisfied with my knock. I have always wanted to bat till the 15-16th over. I just wanted to bat normally like I have been doing in the whole tournament. We have to keep winning the rest of the games, do our basics properly.

Mandeep Singh is the Man of the Match

Kumar Sangakkara: I think we have just got to keep playing. We bowled far too short in the first 12 overs on a wicket which had something for the bowlers. We allowed Mandeep Singh and their batsmen to capitalise. We need to get our basics right. Punjab showed us how to bowl. When you play T20 cricket and are chasing, you need to restrict the opposition to 150.

David Hussey: Yes it wasn’t as convincing as we wanted it to. Mandeep Singh is going from strength to strength. He got something special out there. Got two other spinners in the team who are better than me. Praveen is bowling really well. We got to win three in the next four to go through to the qualifiers

Watson leads Rajasthan Royals to comfortable win over Pune Warriors: IPL 2012

Posted: 08 May 2012 08:40 AM PDT

Australian all-rounder Shane Watson hit a blistering unbeaten 90 as Rajasthan Royals thrashed Pune Warriors by seven wickets in a thoroughly one-sided IPL contest to keep their hopes of qualifying for the knock-out stage alive.

The loss was Pune’s eighth in 12 matches and thus ended any theoretical chance whatsoever of making it to the knock-out stages. Royals now have 12 points and the convincing win have got them upto fourth place with a healthy net run rate of +0.265.

It was the same old story of batting failure for Ganguly and his men. The only change in the script being that Warriors skipper Sourav Ganguly opted to bat first but his team could muster only 125 for six which was certainly not enough to compete.

In reply, Watson sent the Pune bowlers on a leather hunt as his knock came off only 51 balls laced with 10 fours and four sixes. He added 56 runs with Ashok Menaria (18) for the third wicket and Royals won with 22 balls to spare.

Watson feasted on the freebies provided by Warriors’ 36-year-old long-time India discard Murali Kartik as he was hit for three fours and two sixes. The Aussie all-rounder signed off with a boundary.

Opting to bat first, Pune Warriors’ batting woes continued as they could manage only 125 for six in their stipulated 20 overs.

Almost all the Warriors batsmen found the going tough as Team Rajasthan bowlers kept a tight leash on the home team batsmen.

Barring IPL debutant Anustup Majumdar who scored a quickfire 30, all the other batsmen found it hard to accelerate the pace of scoring on a pitch where strokmaking seemed difficult. Even Pune’s best batsman Steve Smith struggled managing only 18 off 22 balls.

The testimony to that was only five boundaries and two sixes being hit in the entire Pune innings. Shaun Tait turned out to be the most successful bowler grabbing three for 13.

Skipper Sourav Ganguly’s wretched form with the bat continued as he struggled to get his timing right. With his opening partner Michael Clarke also not in his element, the Warriors failed to utilise the Powerplay overs.

The only confident stroke that Ganguly hit was a square cut off Johan Botha’s delivery during his innings of 14. He consumed 18 deliveries in the process.

After Tait dropped him in the deep fine leg region as he went for a mistimed hook-shot off Shane Watson’s bowling, the former Aussie international made amends as he bowled a perfect bouncer to get rid of the former India captain as Ankeet Chavan took a well-judged catch.

Clarke was then done in by Stuart Binny’s gentle inswinger that looked like hitting the leg-stump. Clarke score 16 off 18 balls. At 35 for two in the seventh over, Majumdar (30, 20 balls, 2×6, 1×4) joined hands with an out-of-form Robin Uthappa (13, 19 balls).

The pair added 42 runs for the third wicket but strangely enough it was Anustup who started taking on the Pune bowlers rather than million-dollar man Uthappa who was content taking singles.

In the 11th over, Anustup hit left-arm spinner Chavan for two sixes in the deep mid-wicket region. Showing good temperament, he then hit an inside-out shot over extra-cover off Botha but the offie got his revenge as he yorked the Bengal lad.

Uthappa’s horrible run continued as he edged one off Tait to glovesman Dishant Yagnik behind the stumps.

Toss: Deccan Chargers have won the toss and elected to field

Teams:
Deccan Chargers (Playing XI): Daniel Harris, Shikhar Dhawan, Cameron White, Kumar Sangakkara(c), Parthiv Patel(w), Abhishek Jhunjunwala, Ashish Reddy, Akshath Reddy, Amit Mishra, Juan Theron, Veer Pratap Singh

Kings XI Punjab (Playing XI): Shaun Marsh, Mandeep Singh, Nitin Saini(w), David Hussey(c), David Miller, Azhar Mahmood, Siddharth Chitnis, Piyush Chawla, Ramesh Powar, Praveen Kumar, Parvinder Awana

Sangakkara: Ya we are looking to turn things around and start winning. We have played well but have failed to deliver at the crunch situations. I think we were in a position to be about seven places up but we haven’t fielded well enough. We have batted and bowled well but in tough situations the fielding matters and we have let ourselves down there. The deck looks like it will stay the same throughout. The par score is 150-160 so if we restrict them to anything below that, it will be great. We just need to trust what we are doing. Rusty Theron comes in.

David Hussey: I am enjoying the role as a captain. Gilly was desperate to play tonight but the physio ruled him out. He should play the next fixture. We have got to do the hard yards and we need to win the next four. We would have batted first anyway. David Miller comes in for Ryan Harris, Sid Chitnis comes in and so does Ramesh Powar.

Ganguly: We were surprised that we couldn;t get the ball out of the park. We hit only 5 fours and 2 sixes and that explains it all. 140 would have been a par score but we needed to get Watson out. We’re out of the play offs but we still need to play well in the next 3 games.

Dravid: Happy about the win and happy about the way we’re playing. We can always win games but what gives the captain satisfaction is the way the team plays. Terrific performance by the bowlers and Watson was brilliant. It was not an easy track to bat on but he was terrific. We’re not looking at the points table. We’ll just look to play good cricket. It’s a tough competition and we’ll not worry about the points table.

Shane Watson: The wicket was a bit slow but it was my night tonight. The catch by Steve Smith nearly got me out, I actually thought it was out. I just back myself and play with a clear mind. I try to maintain it simple and hit straight. Initially it’s important to get ahead of the required rate because it won’t be easy to score later on. The transition from Tests to T20 took me a game, but after a few practice sessions I was fine.

Dravid: My batting is going well so far. If you have momentum and form then you just need to keep it going in the T20 format. Watson makes a huge difference to our side, he is a great cricketer, who bats, bowls and fields and adds a lot of leadership value as well. It is nice to pair up against Sourav again and play against him. We know a lot about each other. I would have liked to have batted first as well, but it looks like a good wicket so it should stay the same. Hodge misses out today unfortunately due to an injury and Owais Shah comes in.

Delhi Daredevils is missing Kevin Pietersen: Irfan Pathan

Posted: 08 May 2012 02:00 AM PDT

Delhi Daredevils all-rounder Irfan Pathan has called on the middle-order batsmen of his side to fill in the gap, left by Kevin Pietersen, and also hoped that struggling Kiwi batsman Ross Taylor would soon find his touch.

Pietersen has gone back to England as they prepare for a home series against the West Indies. He had scored 305 runs from eight innings at an average of 61 with a strike rate of 147.34.

“When Kevin was there, he was performing really well for the Daredevils in the middle-order but now some other batsman needs to put his hand up and perform at his best,” Pathan said at the post match press conference after Delhi lost by six wickets to Kolkata.

“We have some wonderful players in the middle order like Ross Taylor. Once he starts firing, you know he is a player to watch out for. He can hit the ball long way. We have no doubt with every match he plays, he is getting better.

“Kevin has done a good job for us but at the same time, it’s an opportunity for others to take his place,” he added.

Pathan said the loss of both the openers in quick succession and failure of the bowling unit led to team’s defeat at the hands of KKR.

“We did not put enough runs on the board. We could have scored 160-plus but that wasn’t the case today. We lost Virender Sehwag and David Warner around the same time and that put us on backfoot.

“As a bowling unit, we always try to get better with each passing game. We did not perform well and need to bowl better in matches ahead,” he said.

Pathan refused to blame the long break between Daredevils’ two matches for defeat at the home turf.

“I don’t think so, we have prepared really well. Last couple of days, our preparation has been wonderful. The guys have been working hard. No matter if we win or loss, we will be consistent with our intensity. There was nothing because of the break because sometimes breaks are a good thing. We can’t blame the break, it’s very simple we just didn’t play well.

“We had some good days in this IPL and we will make sure that from next game we keep that momentum going,” said Irfan, whose 22-ball 36 helped Kolkata to cross the 150-mark.

The Baroda player admitted that the team wanted to win against KKR more than anything else.

“We wanted to win this game the most because we might play KKR again in the tournament. So, we had the chance and we wanted to win it particularly more than any other game. Two quick wickets and no one actually was able to get to a big score,” he added.

Talking about team’s fielding, he said, “We keep a check on it. We know it’s a long tournament and once we are into the qualifying round it will all depend on one match.”

“So we want to make sure we keep ourselves under pressure to maintain the same intensity. When you don’t win, lot of things come out of it. Losing is never a positive thing. There is no issue of complacency as we want to make sure we win all our matches.”

On dropping a simple catch of his brother Yusuf at mid-off, he said, “God it has happened the second or third time now. Just before that, I got a Karbonn Kamal catch and the next catch I dropped was really the easiest of the lot.”

“I have already had a chat about the catch with David Warner but I am sure some more players are going to tease me about it.”

Responsibility lies with me & Kallis for play-offs: Gambhir

Posted: 08 May 2012 01:36 AM PDT

After leading his side to the top with a facile win over Delhi Daredevils, Kolkata Knight Riders skipper Gautam Gambhir said he, along with senior batsman Jacques Kallis, will have to shoulder the responsibility of steering the team to playoff stage.

Gambhir has been leading from the front by scoring 457 runs so far in the ongoing edition.

“If someone has to change the game, it should be Kallis or me. We don’t want (Brendon) McCullum or Yusuf Pathan to change the game. It’s our responsibility because we are the experienced guys,” Gambhir said at the post-match press conference

“You don’t want them to stop playing their natural game. The guys like me and Kallis need to change the game and that is what responsibility and experience is all about.”

KKR thrashed Delhi Daredevils by six wickets in a lopsided contest here last night to emerge as the table leaders in the IPL. They now have 17 points and are almost assured of a place in the knock-out stage.

Gambhir said his team is playing in the IPL not just to compete but win matches.

“For me, every game is tough and important. When I go on to the field, I just want to win the match. It’s not about competing in the IPL, it’s about winning every time. I always look to win matches because you don’t want to go back to the dressing room on a losing note. You want to go happy and for that feeling to come, you have to win matches.

“We have some quality players in the dressing room. Someone like Kallis, who is such a legend of the game. Brendon McCullum and Brett Lee are also there. When you have such players, you don’t need to motivate them. They all are thorough professionals. One thing important for us is that we need to play well as a unit,” he said.

An aggressive approach to batting has been the success mantra for KKR skipper Gambhir.

“I’ve been hitting the ball well this season. You need to be aggressive in your approach. You have to pass on that body language among teammates which is very important. As I mentioned before, you don’t go there to compete but to win matches. For that to achieve, you need to be aggressive,” said the opener.

With four more games remaining before the playoffs, Gambhir warned his side to guard against complacency.

“KKR still have a long distance to cover with four more games remaining before the playoffs. We need to guard against complacency. I am keeping my fingers crossed, just trying to give our best in every match.

“Till the time, I am leading the KKR or whatever team I’m going to lead (in the future), there will be no complacency. For me, every game is as important as the first game or the finals. That’s what KKR is all about,” he said.

For Gambhir, the form of McCullum augurs well for KKR. “He has always been in form. In India, there is a problem, if someone gets a fifty he is in the form, if someone does not get a fifty, he is out of the form. How he’s batting and hitting the ball is more important to me. It was all about contributions. Even in the last game, he got 40-odd runs and we got 100-run partnership, that’s more important rather than individual scores. He has always been a key player for us.”

Asked about the incident involving Daredevils’ batsman Mahela Jayawardene, who survived a confident caught behind appeal after which he had a heated exchange with Gambhir only for Ross Taylor to intervene and separate the two, the skipper said, “These things keep happening. It was just a normal conversation, nothing serious.”

IPL 2012 Preview: Kings XI Punjab Vs Deccan Chargers, 08 May 2012

Posted: 07 May 2012 06:30 PM PDT

Virtually out of the reckoning for a place in the plays offs, a demoralised Deccan Chargers would look to salvage some pride when they take on Kings XI Punjab in an Indian Premier League match here on Tuesday.

Having won just two out of the 11 matches they played so far in the tournament, Deccan is presently languishing at the bottom of the team standings with just five points.

Though Deccan batsmen put up an impressive show against Royal Challengers Bangalore on Sunday, the lacklustre performance of their bowlers and AB de Villiers superlative batting poured cold water on the Hyderabad outfit’s hope of staging a comeback.

After posting a more-than-challenging 181 for two on the board, Deccan bowlers failed to rise to the occasion as de Villiers scored a whirlwind 47 not out off just 17 balls to to guide RCB to the five-wicket win with seven balls to spare.

There would be added pressure on Deccan on Tuesday as they will play in Hyderabad for the first match in this tournament.

Deccan’s batting, off late, has fired with big-hitting Cameron White, who has scored three half centuries in the last five games, Shikhar Dhawan, captain Kumar Sangakkara and Daniel Harris all finding themselves among runs.

But what Deccan lacks is firepower in its bowling department.

Barring Dale Steyn, the Hyderabad team does not have quality bowlers in their ranks. Their domestic pacers in Veer Pratap Singh, A Ashish Reddy and Anand Rajan have also failed to provide the South African speedster ample support from the other end.

The spin department also lacks sting with leg-spinner Amit Mishra resembling a pale shadow of himself.

Kings XI, on the other hand, is still in with a chance of making it to the knockout stages having garnered 10 points from 11 games.

The Punjab side would make a determined bid to win against a struggling Deccan tomorrow to improve its position in the points table.

After consecutive wins over defending champions Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore, Kings XI suffered a 43-run defeat at the hands of Rajasthan Royals in their last game.

And come tomorrow, the Adam Gilchrist-led side would be hoping to return to winning ways as a single defeat in the remaining five games could jeopardise their play off chances.

Former Pakistani all-rounder Azhar Mahmood’s presence in the side, after his visa issue was resolved, has meant that Punjab have struck the right balance.

The 37-year-old Mahmood, now a British national, seems to have infused new energy in the side, which looked down in the dumps at one stage.

The aggressive medium pacer has not only impressed with his wicket-taking abilities and temperament in crunch situations, but also made useful contributions with the bat.

Stand-in skipper David Hussey’s leadership has revived the sagging fortunes of the team.

In the absence of Gilchrist, who is nursing a hamstring injury, Hussey has led the team from the front scoring 263 runs from 11 games so far with a half century to his credit.

But leading the pack among Kings XI batsmen are Aussie left-hander Shaun Marsh (290) and domestic player Mandeep Singh (284).

In the bowling department, medium pacer Praveen Kumar and find of this season, Parvinder Awana have been doing a good job.

The inclusion of Ryan Harris has further bolstered Punjab ‘s bowling arsenal.

Even though he is costing a few runs, leg-spinner Piyush Chawla has reapead rich dividends with the ball for Kings XI and is presently the third highest wicket-taker in the tournament with 14 scalps to his name so far. (PTI)

IPL 2012 Preview: Rajasthan Royals Vs Pune Warriors, 08 May 2012

Posted: 07 May 2012 04:30 PM PDT

A more balanced Rajasthan Royals side would look to strengthen its position in the clogged points table when it takes on struggling hosts Pune Warriors in an Indian Premier League 2012 match.

The Sourav Ganguly-led Pune have lost five of their last six clashes although the defeat margins in the last two have been just one and seven runs.

The last time they won was on April 21 when they got the better of formidable Delhi Daredevils.

Rajasthan too had been struggling until they crushed Kings XI Punjab by 43 runs on May 5. Before that win, they too had lost three matches on the trot.

With the coming of all-rounder Shane Watson and pacer Shaun Tait, Rajasthan have got the balance in both bowling and batting.

With skipper Rahul Dravid and young gun Ajinkya Rahane doing well at the top and the middle order too responding, batting has not been much of a problem for them. But they have failed in conquering tight matches.

Pune too have lost close matches and their morale have taken a beating with five defeats in a row. Rajasthan would look to pile on the misery of the hosts.

Pune were hoping that the addition of Michael Clarke in their ranks would give a boost to their batting but the Australian skipper is yet to fire.

In three matches he has scored 56 runs, out of which 41 came in one match.

They have struggled as a batting unit as young Indian players Robin Uthappa, Manish Pandey and Mithun Manhas have failed to make an impact.

Their foreign imports too have not clicked in a way the team had hoped them to. The only saving grace is the bowling of pace duo Angelo Mathews and Wayne Parnell.

Pune are languishing at the eighth position and will have to win all their remaining four matches to be in contention for play-offs berth.

Rajasthan are at number six and can challenge Royal Challengers Bangalore and defending champions Chennai Spuer Kings for a place in the play-offs if they come up with good shows in their remaining five matches. (PTI)

RR: Rahul Dravid (c), Ajinkya Rahane, Johan Botha, Brad Hodge, Shane Watson, Ashok Menaria, Dishant Yagnik (wk), Stuart Binny, Ankeet Chavan, Shaun Tait, Siddhart Trivedi.
