England Vs West Indies, 1st Test, Lord’s, 17-21 May 2012: Preview

Posted: 16 May 2012 01:48 PM PDT

West Indies face England in the first of a three-Test series at Lord’s on Thursday with the tourists’ batting likely to determine the course of the match.

Should conditions prove as seam friendly as they have for much of the early part of the English season, West Indies’ top order could struggle to provide the kind of platform that will help improve on a record of just two wins in 30 Tests since beating England in Jamaica in 2009.

Kieran Powell made his second first-class hundred in West Indies’ 10-wicket defeat by the England Lions at Northampton last week, a match where number four Darren Bravo made two fifties.

However, Powell’s opening partner Adrian Barath and Kirk Edwards managed just 26 runs between them at Northampton, having only compiled 16 and eight respectively in the near washout against Sussex at Hove.

Much could depend on world number one batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who has performed many a rescue mission for the West Indies during a career that last month saw him become only the 10th batsman to score 10,000 Test runs.

However, the 37-year-old Guyanese left-hander generally prefers to bat no higher than five in the order.

The problem with that, from the West Indies’ point of view, is that too often Chanderpaul comes in with the team already in trouble.

For example, during West Indies’ most recent Test – a 75-run defeat by Australia in Dominica last month – Chanderpaul came in at 73 for three and 45 for three.

There has been talk of promoting Chanderpaul up the order but it appears he is set to stay put – at least for the time being.

“It’s something we’ve thought about,” said West Indies coach Ottis Gibson. “Our batting revolves around Shiv – he’s very comfortable in the position he is at the moment and he’s doing a good job for us.

“We’ve decided to leave it as it is at the moment but it’s something we haven’t completely ruled out.”

West Indies will be without aggressive opening batsman Chris Gayle because of his Indian Premier League commitments and the fact the former captain’s lengthy stand-off with the West Indies Cricket Board only recently came to an end.

But Gibson backed his younger batsmen to come good, saying: “We know it’s going to be a challenge for them – but the selectors have got a lot of confidence in them, as I have.”

Before taking up his current post, Gibson was England’s bowling coach and so helped the likes of home duo James Anderson and Stuart Broad.

But the tourists, whose three leading pacemen – Kemar Roach (ankle), Fidel Edwards (back) and Ravi Rampaul (stiff neck) – have all overcome minor injury concerns, boast some firepower of their own.

England will be keen to make a commanding start after seeing their status as the world’s number one Test side diminished somewhat during a recent 3-0 defeat by Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates and a 1-1 draw in Sri Lanka.

“I don’t think we need to prove anything,” said Matt Prior, the England wicketkeeper. “We’ve played good cricket over a number of years now.

“After the glitches in the winter, I know everyone is very keen and pumped up to perform from the off this summer.”

An injury to Ravi Bopara could see Jonathan Bairstow, son of late England wicketkeeper David, make a Test debut at number six.

England, who have five seamers in their squad, face some awkward selection decisions and when it comes to top order batting they too have a problem they would like to solve quickly.

Andrew Strauss, the England captain, has made just one century in his last 49 Test innings but Prior said: “The one fantastic thing about Straussy is that he’s just ‘Mr Consistent’.

“He could score four hundreds in a row, four zeroes in a row, but he’ll be exactly the same person.”

Kolkata Knight Riders thrash Mumbai Indians by 32 runs: IPL 2012

Posted: 16 May 2012 01:10 PM PDT

Kolkata Knight Riders dished out a clinical bowling performance to beat Mumbai Indians comprehensively by 32 runs and virtually seal a berth in the four-team play-offs of the Indian Premier League on Wednesday. With is win KKR moved to second place in the IPL Points Table

Chasing a modest 141, MI lost wickets at regular intervals after being 60 for one to be shot out for 108 in 19.1 overs, their second lowest total of the season after the paltry 92 made against Delhi Daredevils at this venue.

West Indian off-spinner Sunil Narine was unplayable and pushed MI to the brink with a superb haul of four for 15.

Narine was well-supported by Laxmipathy Balaji (2 for 11) and Jacques Kallis (2 for 42), while left arm spinners Shakib Al Hasan and Iqbal Abdulla too did their bit with a wicket each.

MI batsmen made a hash of what appeared to be a gettable score at the Wankhede Stadium and again the dismissal of their icon Sachin Tendulkar for 27 in the 11th over triggered a sharp collapse, which saw the home team lose their last eight wickets for just 48 runs.

The MI batsmen struggled against the varied KKR attack on a wicket that possessed no devil like in the past but provided some appreciable bounce to the spinners.

The victory helped KKR to take the second spot behind table leaders Delhi Daredevils with 19 points, while MI remained third on 18 points ahead of their final game against Rajasthan Royals at Jaipur on May 20.

KKR will face Pune Warriors in their final league game at Pune on Saturday.

Apart from Tendulkar, who hit three fours and a six in 24 balls, Dinesh Kartik (21), Rohit Sharma (12) and Ambati Rayudu (11) got starts but failed to bring Mumbai to the finishing line.

Earlier, Rudra Pratap Singh bagged two wickets in as many balls in his first over as Mumbai Indians restricted Kolkata Knight Riders to a paltry 140 for 7.

Seeking a victory to seal a play-off berth, MI were on top from the time skipper Harbhajan Singh opted to field after winning the toss as their bowlers, led by R P Singh, kept the rival batsmen on a tight leash.

There was little of note in KKR’s innings, which never kept going after the loss of opener Brendon McCullum and Jacques Kallis in successive balls to R P Singh.

Skipper Gautam Gambhir made 27 off 23 balls with a six and three fours, while Manoj Tiwary scored an attractive 41 off 43 balls with two sixes and as many fours before both threw away their wickets.

The lower order batsmen tried their bit and managed to add 46 runs in the last five overs, with Yusuf Pathan making an unbeaten 21 in 21 balls with two fours, but the score looked below par on a track that looked good for batting.

For MI, who had lost their previous home game to Royal Challengers Bangalore by a big margin, R P Singh led the bowling honours with figures of two for 33 while Lasith Malinga, Munaf Patel, Kieron Pollard and Dwayne Smith all picked up a wicket apiece.

KKR were rocked on the back foot by R P Singh who packed off McCullum (1) and Kallis (0) off successive balls in his first over, and the innings’ second.

While McCullum got the wrong end of a dubious umpiring decision, Kallis had his off stump uprooted by a peach of a delivery from R P Singh.

R P Singh was denied a hat-trick by Manoj Tiwary, but the scoring rate fell down because of these two quick wickets.

Gambhir, who began with a superb straight drive off the first ball of the match from Munaf Patel, was a bit fortunate not to have been dismissed on nine as he was dropped by Sachin Tendulkar at third man fence off R P Singh.

MI struck another major blow soon after the end of the strategic time-out when Pollard packed off Gambhir with a ball that held its line and took the top of his off stump.

Gambhir’s stand of 38 in 42 balls for the third wicket with Tiwary helped the visitors steady their ship.

Tiwary was, however, lucky when umpire Billy Doctrove did not uphold a confident caught behind appeal by Dinesh Karthik off Pollard.

At the half-way stage of their allotted overs, the visitors had moved up to 54 for three.

The 12th over, third by Harbhajan Singh, proved fruitful for KKR when it yielded 14 runs with Tiwary cutting the off-spinner for a four and then lofting him for a six.

The Bengal batsman then stepped out to smack Malinga for a huge six over the sight screen in the next over.

At the other end, Shakib-al Hasan played a poor shot and got bowled trying to pull Dwayne Smith to an end the productive 29-ball 45-run fourth wicket partnership with Tiwary.

Tiwary too fell immediately afterwards, caught at long off by Malinga off Munaf’s last over as KKR slumped to 91 for five. The foolish run out of Debabrata Das in the next over made life more difficult for the visitors.

Pathan led a charmed life. He top-edged and got a four, was caught off a no-ball and added 29 runs in 16 balls for the seventh wicket with Rajat Bhatia (12) that improved the score.(PTI)

Sunil Narine: It feels great to go out there and do well for your side. I am pretty much having a dream now. My hard work has paid off. I wasn’t too worried about the wicket, but did not expect this assistance. I think the guys will try to keep the winning spirit. The more we win, the better it is for us. I think the bowlers have been doing a pretty good job.

Sunil Narine is the obvious Man of the Match.

Gambhir: I don’t think 140 was enough. When you have lost 2 wickets in the first few overs, it’s a setback. But we did well to get to 140. A captain is only as good as the team. If you don’t have the bowlers on the field, you are no good. Individuals contribute, team wins. This was an important game for us. We lost 2 before this and losing this would have put us under a lot of pressure. We will try to finish in the top 2.

Harbhajan: There wasn’t much fault with the wicket. We need to look at how we bat in the first six overs. They yielded only 20 runs. That was what was game changing. We played poor cricket today. We need to win the next game and ensure that we win it nicely. All other teams are chasing the other teams. We have been playing good and bad cricket in patches. We have to go out and give our best shot. Mumbai crowd has always been special. Would like to thank each and every Mumbaikar. We will try our level best to be in Top 4.

Harbhajan: It is a big game, if we win this one then we hold on to our second spot. It makes a difference when you have experience at the top and having Gibbs back in the side is definitely a real boost to our side. The crowd in Mumbai has been fantastic throught the tournament. We don’t know what to expect from this pitch but chasing has been easier out here. Everyone is fit and is looking forward to this fixture. Our team is unchanged.

Gambhir: I have always mentioned that someone who has been hitting the ball well needs to keep doing it. We have quality in our line up so Im’m sure someone will fire very soon. We just want to go out and continue performing the way we have and hopefully come out on top. We don’t want to put too much pressure on ourselves and get desperate. Shakib and Iqbal come in for Marchant de Lange and Laxmi Ratan Shukla in today’s game because the wicket looks a little dry. I would have batted first as well since we have three spinners in the side today.

IPL 2012 Preview: Mumbai Indians Vs Kolkata Knight Riders, 16 May 2012

Posted: 15 May 2012 05:30 PM PDT

Thirsting for revenge and desperate to arrest their two-match losing streak in the ongoing Indian Premier League, Kolkata Knight Riders would settle for nothing less than a victory in their return leg clash against Mumbai Indians on Wednesday.

But it won’t be easy for KKR as Mumbai Indians, with 18 points from 14 matches, hold an edge over the visitors and a victory in their last home game tomorrow would definitely cement the Harbhajan Singh-led side’s place in the second stage of the competition.

KKR, who suffered back-to-back defeats in their last two games – against MI and holders Chennai Super Kings – at the home venue of Eden Gardens, are a point adrift of their rivals with 17 in their kitty from 14 games.

But a win against Mumbai tomorrow at the Wankhede Stadium would virtually seal KKR’s place in the four-team play-offs ahead of their final round robin game against the struggling Pune Warriors on May 19.

KKR, however, need to dust off the stunning last-ball defeat against Chennai last night in their final home game of the season if they desire to match the highly confident Mumbai outfit, whose main adversary playing in their backyard has been the uncertain nature of the wickets.

On wickets that have helped batsmen, MI have been on roll, but on wickets that have either seamed around or helped spin bowlers overtly, their mighty batting line-up has struggled a bit ? indicated by their 3-4 win-loss record at home this season.

Mumbai have turned it around after being comprehensively outplayed by the Royal Challengers Bangalore at the Wankhede Stadium on May 9. They defeated KKR and RCB away from home in back-to-back games to stand on the threshold of qualifying for the next stage of the competition.

If it was Rohit Sharma who flattened KKR with a brilliant unbeaten 109, his maiden IPL ton, it was another talented youngster, Ambati Rayudu, who stole the win for MI against RCB last night in Bangalore with a brilliant 81 not out off 54 balls.

Though Sachin Tendulkar failed to prosper in both these matches, getting out to single digit scores, MI would be heartened by the performance of Rohit, their leading run-getter this season with 407 from 14 games, and Rayudu.

The availability of South African Herschelle Gibbis to open the innings with Tendulkar has lent the cutting edge to the home team’s fielding.

However, the flip side of Mumbai’s batting has been the inconsistent showing of its number three batsman Rohit, who has fired in one match and then flopped in another.

And KKR know very well that Rohit is the batsman to be stopped at all costs along with Tendulkar and the big-hitting Kieron Pollard whose return from a shoulder injury has galvanised the team’s stuttering form.

Mumbai’s bowling has been a mixed bag right throughout the tournament with the exception of Lasith Malinga, who heads their wicket-takers’ list with 20 scalps from 11 games.

And Malinga would continue to pose serious danger to the rival batsmen whenever he operates.

But none exemplify the inconsistency of Mumbai’s bowling other than Munaf Patel, whose 14 wickets from 11 games have cost him plenty of runs.

The lanky pacer lost the plot for his team against Bangalore yesterday, giving away a 24-run over to Mayank Agarwal with his wayward bowling at the death.

Skipper Harbhajan Singh, who was fined for slow over rate yesterday, has also been inconsistent after slipping into the groove of late.

But luckily for Mumbai, Pollard has been very consistent with the ball while Rudra Pratap Singh and Pragyan Ojha have also witnessed mixed bag outings so far.

On the other hand, Gautam Gambhir has led KKR from the front with the bat, scoring 519 runs from 13 games.

Jacques Kallis (297 from 13) and Brendon McCullum (216 from 9) have done well in patches, but the poor showing of the middle-order would be a serious concern for Gambhir going into their last two league encounters.

A major let-down for KKR in both batting and bowling has been Yusuf Pathan, who has done precious little barring a cameo of 40 not out against MI. His tally of 117 runs and a lone wicket in 13 games has been below par.

Another bits and pieces player Rajat Bhatia has done his bit with the ball (10 wickets in 13 games) without doing much with the bat.

Luckily for KKR, West Indian off-spinner Sunil Narine has been the find of the season.

With 17 scalps from 11 games, Narine is expected to play a vital role against Mumbai and his battle with the home team’s middle-order could be crucial to the outcome of the game. (PTI)
