We have to play our absolute best to beat India : Shane Watson #IndvsAus

Posted: 28 Feb 2013 05:13 AM PST

We have to play our absolute best to beat India - Shane WatsonAustralian batsman Shane Watson has said his side would have to play at their absolute best to win the second Test against India starting on Saturday.

He also believes that the team would have to play its aggressive brand of cricket to do well in the series, after losing the first Test at Chennai.

“We need to win this Test match. There is no doubt. We need to be certainly at our absolute best to beat India,” he said after the visitors had a practice session at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium on Thursday.

“We really need to play our aggressive brand of cricket where we are best as team. We need to find a way to make sure that we play that brand of cricket. We will be making sure as a team go out there and make sure that we really up for the contest,” he said.

“I think we have learnt a lot from how India played in Chennai. It was a great learning as a team and as an individual,” he added.

About the wicket, Watson said it looked really nice which may also turn at some stage.

“I think the wicket is little bit dry than what it normally is for T20s and One-dayers. I think it might turn a little bit at some stage. There may be pace and bounce for the quicks.”

Watson was confident that selectors would announce the playing eleven on Thursday or Friday after looking. Asked if the team was looking for one more spinner, he said this is something selectors are weighing at the moment.

“India’s game plan in Chennai was significantly different from ours as we saw in the second inning when their quick bowlers hardly bowled four or five overs.”

Watson said he would not change very much the way he batted in the first Test but admitted that he would have to spend little more time in the middle to continue to show his intent. He also said he was working to improve his game especially against spinners.

“There is a pressure to score runs because you are primarily picked up as a batsman. My role in top four or five is to make runs no matter whether I am bowling or not,” he said when asked if there is a pressure to score runs.

Watson said though he enjoy opening the batting, he was happy with the new role at No.4.

The aggressive all-rounder said he missed bowling in Chennai Test especially on the day when Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dohni started taking the game away from them.

Watson, who is not bowling due to fitness problem, said he would continue to focus on fitness for next three months before bowling again.

AB de Villiers excited about Proteas young emerging talent

Posted: 28 Feb 2013 01:45 AM PST

AB de Villiers excited about Proteas young emerging talentSouth Africa batsman AB de Villiers has said he is excited by the new talent coming through the domestic system, as the Proteas squad prepares for the first Twenty20 international against Pakistan at Kingsmead on Friday.

The squad features a solid mixture of youth and experience, with domestic players receiving the rewards for consistent performances, Sport24 reports.

De Villiers said it is a nice way of giving youngsters a chance to perform and to showcase their talent, adding he definitely see why they are doing that.

De Villiers added there is so many youngsters that have come through that have won games for their domestic teams on a regular basis.

Pakistan pose a different threat with the white ball, and will be confident after winning the previous encounter between the two nations at the ICC World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka last year.

Knowledge of the conditions and the exuberant talent in the squad will count in South Africa’s favour, at a venue where they recently thrashed New Zealand by eight wickets. (ANI)

Kyle Abbott added to SA ODI squad for Pakistan series #PakvsSA

Posted: 28 Feb 2013 01:03 AM PST

Kyle Abbott added to SA ODI squad for Pakistan seriesSouth African fast bowler Kyle Abbott has been added to the squad for the one-day international series against Pakistan starting from March 10.

According to a Cricket South Africa statement, Abbott, who took nine wickets on his Test debut last week, has been selected for the squad to strengthen Proteas’ fast bowling resources as Morne Morkel is still recovering from his hamstring injury, Sport24 reports.

In the event of Morkel’s injury, and after the withdrawal of Jacques Kallis, Abbott was given a place in the ODI squad against Pakistan.

Abbott’s seven for 29 in the first innings was the second best return on debut by a South African and he helped bowl his side to an innings win over Pakistan to complete a 3-0 series whitewash, the report added. (ANI)

A tiger resides inside ‘slight man’ Sachin Tendulkar, says Mathew Hayden #IndvsAus

Posted: 28 Feb 2013 12:30 AM PST

A tiger resides inside 'slight man' Sachin Tendulkar, says Mathew HaydenA tiger resides inside the “little” frame of Sachin Tendulkar, feels former Australian batsman Matthew Hayden, who saw it when he started playing against the Indian veteran.

“I probably first heard Sachin’s name in the early ’90s. The one thing that always stuck in my mind about Sachin was that his size never ever matched his status,” Hayden wrote in a book ‘Sachin — Cricketer of the Century’ by Vimal Kumar, which will hit the stands in the first week of March.

“He was an incredibly slight man for someone who was such a huge brand within the game. It wasn’t until I really played against him that I understood that there was a tiger that lay within him: he was a very competitive little man,” he said.

Hayden also recalled an interesting incident from the 2008 Test series in India.

“My favourite Sachin moment was at the Mohali Test where he broke the world record for the most number of Test runs. There was so much excitement around the ground that the fireworks actually stopped play for the better part of 20 minutes, whilst the smoke cleared away,” he recalled.

Writing in the same book, former Australian coach John Buchanan compared Tendulkar with Australian great Ricky Ponting, who happened to be a contemporary of the Indian.

“Statistically, Tendulkar has a better record than Ricky Ponting. If Tendulkar is far more orthodox, far more classical and technical, Ricky is a little more unorthodox,” he explained.

Buchanan, however, felt it was difficult to choose between Tendulkar and Ponting.

“Sachin definitely is a better player of spin bowling, more so on the challenging and spin-friendly wickets of the sub-continent,” he said.

“I would have loved to see Ricky’s domination over spinners in the same way as Sachin’s, and vice versa, the Master’s audacity on the front foot like the Tasmanian’s against the best fast bowlers.

“Only if these two qualities were exchanged in their respective games could either of them have bettered Sir Bradman’s Test average,” he added.

Buchanan praised Tendulkar’s mental toughness. “Sachin has an exceptional ability to relax and can switch on and switch off with ease without any fuss. To get away from cricket and can come back recharged year after year for decades has been really marvellous. The Master has been the greatest exponents of doing that.”

Australian seamer Jackson Bird ruled out of India series #IndvsAus

Posted: 27 Feb 2013 11:30 PM PST

Australian seamer Jackson Bird ruled out of India seriesInjured Australian speedster Jackson Bird has been ruled out of the remaining three Test matches against India due to a bone stress injury on his back sustained during the first warm-up game of the ongoing series.

“Initial tests performed in Melbourne have confirmed that Jackson Bird has a bone stress injury of the low back,” team doctor Peter Brukner was quoted as saying.

“He will undergo further tests tomorrow (Thursday). He will not be re-joining the team in India.”

Bird played in the first warm-up game of the tour against Board President’s XI and bowled 10 economic overs giving away only 10 runs.

A likely recovery time will not be known until Bird has further tests but it is a worrying development for Australia in an Ashes year, given how well his accurate seam-bowling style could translate to English conditions.

The loss of Bird leaves Australia with a 16-man squad ahead of the second Test, which starts in Hyderabad on Saturday.

At this stage, the selectors have not decided on whether to send a replacement player to join the group, leaving Mitchell Johnson as the only extra fast bowler in the group besides those who played in the first Test.

Dav Whatmore future depends on ODI and T20 series against South Africa : PCB Sources #PakvsSA

Posted: 27 Feb 2013 10:30 PM PST

Dav Whatmore future depends on ODI and T20 series against South Africa - PCB SourcesThe forthcoming T20 and ODI series in South Africa could well decide the fate of the national team’s Australian coach Dav Whatmore or lead to the axing of some senior players from the squad.

The buzz within the PCB also indicates that already there is talk about the Chairman of the board Zaka Ashraf deciding to take some strong decisions when the team returns home in late March.

To complicate matters for Whatmore and in fact the team management reports about problems in the dressing room have also not helped their cause.

The daily “Jang” reported on Wednesday that immediately after the massive innings defeat in the third Test Whatmore had chosen to take out his anger on Imran Farhat who incidentally was Pakistan’s best player in the match with scores of 30 and 44.

“Instead of taking out his anger on the senior players for their inept performances, Whatmore accused Farhat of working against team’s interest and playing for himself.

“This led to a argument between the two with the latter reminding the coach that at least he had chosen to play positively against the South African bowlers and it had produced good results. Farhat also told Whatmore to not blame him and look at the team’s passive approach in the matches,” the report said.

Another report claimed that the team management had tried to hide the real reason for the fitness problems facing left arm pacer Junaid Khan on the tour.

The report said that Junaid had fallen off a water scooter during a outing and hurt himself which led to his fitness problems and kept him out of the last two Tests.

“The team management has tried to give the impression that Junaid hurt himself on the field,” the report said

“Clearly, there is pressure on the board and the only thing that can save some heads from rolling is if the team makes a strong comeback in the T20 and ODI series,” an insider in the board said.

Greg Chappell excited about team India future, worries about test cricket

Posted: 27 Feb 2013 09:45 PM PST

Greg Chappell excited about team India future, worries about test cricketFormer Team India coach Greg Chappell on Tuesday said he was excited about the future of Indian cricket but worried about the future of Test matches.

“I think the future of Indian cricket is very strong. I am excited to think where Indian cricket can go and can lead the game,” Chappell said while delivering the annual Tiger Pataudi lecture.

However, one thing which worries the former Aussie skipper though is the future of Test cricket in the age of Twenty20′s.

Chappell said it would be a big mistake and detrimental to the future of cricket if the longer version of the game lost its importance.

Remarking that Test matches are the soul of cricket, Chappell said, "If we allow Tests to lose, cricket will lose its soul. Cricket will be poorer.”

“T20 has taken the game to a different level. It is here to stay, no doubt about that. We don’t need to change that,” he said while stressing that Test cricket needs to be protected in such a scenario.

Explaining the importance of Tests, he said the five-day game threw up challenges which test the patience of cricketers and make them learn how to deal with the good and the bad together.

Talking about the future of Indian cricket, he said if Indian players could perform well under different conditions, then nothing could stop the team.

Stating that challenges change not only with different pitches but with the progress of a Test, Chappell said, "That is where you develop players who can play all over the world. I think once your cricket embraces this, there will be no stopping what Indian cricket can achieve.”

The former Aussie skipper said Indian cricket should have the best side in the world as it has the natural advantage of huge population.

“The reason why it has not happened is the plans have not been put in place,” Chappell said.

“It (India) should be the next cricket super-power. It should dominate cricket in the long-term. For that, changes are needed but not ad-hoc strategies,” he said adding that India should win more matches away from home.

Praising MS Dhoni’s batting skills, Chappell said the Indian skipper developed skills because of playing on a variety of surfaces.

“The step which is equally important is to provide facilities for everybody to play cricket. It is the environment rather than the academies that produce good players,” he said.

He also suggested that BCCI’s pitch and grounds committee should not try to make all pitches of the same type.

“Not every pitch needs to be the same. Each region has its own nuances,” he said.

Pakistan vs South Africa 1st T20 Preview – 01 March 2013 #PakvsSA

Pakistan vs South Africa 1st T20 PreviewPakistan have a chance to hit back after a trouncing in the Test series when they meet South Africa in the first of two Twenty20 internationals at Kingsmead on Friday.

The tourists were outclassed in the Tests, losing all three matches, but can be reasonably optimistic about their prospects in the shorter forms of the game with the Twenty20 games followed by five one-day internationals.

Only five of South Africa’s current Test players are in the T20 squad — Faf du Plessis, who has been appointed captain in the shortest format, AB de Villiers, Robin Peterson, Rory Kleinveldt and fast bowling discovery Kyle Abbott.

The change of emphasis in South Africa’s approach is underlined by the fact that national coach Gary Kirsten handed the T20 reins to Russell Domingo, his assistant coach, before a three-match series against New Zealand earlier in the season.

South Africa won that series 2-1.

Pakistan will be boosted by the inclusion of the experienced duo of Shahid Afridi and Shoaib Malik.

Opening batsman Mohammad Hafeez takes over as T20 captain, although Test skipper Misbah-ul-Haq will resume the leadership for the one-day internationals, which start in Bloemfontein on March 10.

The Akmal brothers, Kamran and Umar, who were not part of the Test squad, are others who could add impetus to the T20 side.

Whereas South Africa’s greatest strength is in their number one-ranked Test team, Pakistan are likely to be lifted by the infusion of new players after a morale-sapping experience in the Test series.

“It will be good to have some new players for the one-day games… the new players will come with fresh minds and a positive attitude,” Misbah said after the final Test ended in three days on Sunday.

By contrast, Domingo said South Africa faced a “much tougher” challenge in the T20s, describing his team as “a work in progress” with young players being tried out with a view to the next World T20 in Bangladesh next year.

Squads:
South Africa: Faf du Plessis (capt), Kyle Abbott, Farhaan Behardien, Henry Davids, Quinton de Kock (wkt), AB de Villiers (wkt), Rory Kleinveldt, Ryan McLaren, David Miller, Chris Morris, Justin Ontong, Robin Peterson, Aaron Phangiso, Lonwabo Tsotsobe.

Pakistan: Mohammad Hafeez (capt), Nasir Jamshed, Shoaib Malik, Kamran Akmal (wkt), Umar Akmal, Shahid Afridi, Saeed Ajmal, Mohammad Irfan, Wahab Riaz, Umar Gul, Ahmed Shehzad, Umar Amin, Zulfiqar Babar, Asad Ali, Junaid Khan.

Mickey Arthur admits difficult selection dilemma in bowling #IndvsAus

Posted: 27 Feb 2013 03:30 AM PST

Mickey Arthur admits difficult selection dilemma in bowlingAustralian cricket coach Mickey Arthur conceded that his team made a mistake by not going in with two spinners in the lost opening Test against India but it remains a “difficult” selection dilemma for the second match as well due to the pacers’ decent performance.

“That’s going to be the million dollar question,” Arthur said when asked whether the Aussies would go for a two-pronged spin attack in the Test starting on March 2.

“It’s easy in hindsight having a look at how the wicket ended up, you probably would have liked two spinners on there, however, our quicks took most wickets. We didn’t get a massive return from spin in this game. I thought James Pattinson was outstanding, so it’s a difficult dilemma,” he explained.

Arthur said the visiting side, which lost by eight wickets in the first Test, is not sure about the bowling attack for the second Test.

“Looking at the way it ended up probably two spinners (would have been good) but our quicks were the most likely out there, so I am not sure which way really,” he said.

Xavier Doherty is the second spin option for the Australians if they decide to go for more than one slow bowlers.

“I think on wickets like this balls turning into you are just as effective, because you’ve actually got to play,” Arthur was quoted as saying.

“You can’t leave balls alone. Balls coming into the bat on wickets that have crumbled are almost as tough to play. Ideally you want both, and I did a lot of looking at the England series and they used Panesar a lot,” he explained.

Arthur said the opening Test was a massive learning experience for the team’s only full-time spinner Nathan Lyon, conceded 244 runs for four wickets.

“I think he has learnt from this game that you have got to be really consistent in conditions like this in order to put the batsmen under any sort of pressure, but I think he will grow and he will learn from this game,” Arthur said.

“It will be interesting to see how he pulls up after this Test match and in terms of information and preparation and everything he worked extremely hard coming into this Test match. Only he knows how he will approach things if he plays in the next Test match and how that is going to go.”

MS Dhoni should bat at no. 6 in test, says Rahul Dravid #IndvsAus

Posted: 27 Feb 2013 02:38 AM PST

MS Dhoni should bat at no. 6 in test, says Rahul DravidFormer India skipper Rahul Dravid on Wednesday suggested that Mahendra Singh Dhoni should consistently bat at number six in Tests as it can potentially change the complexion of the side in abroad series.

Dhoni batted at number six in the just-concluded first Test against Australia and went on to score a game-changing knock of 224 in the first innings.

It was after two years that Dhoni played at number six as the last time Indian skipper played at this position was in February 2010 against South Africa in Nagpur.

In his 116 Test innings so far, Dhoni has played at number six or above only 17 times, mostly featuring at number seven.

Dravid said Dhoni’s decision to bat a little up the order was right and he should stick with it.

“He has moved up the order a little bit which has given him a chance to play such an innings, batting at number seven is difficult. At six, he will have an established batsman before him and an all-rounder after him,” Dravid said.

“From India’s point of view, they will want him to replicate this abroad and if he can actually bat at number six abroad, it will make India a different side, it will change the complexion of Indian team, the balance of the team will be different,” Dravid said.

“No one is expecting a 200 from him every time he plays abroad but a level of consistency abroad will change the complexion of the Indian side,” he added.

India’s next foreign assignment is against South Africa and Dravid wants Dhoni to bat at number six there.

“I will want him to be at no 6 and I would like him to make a fist of it at no 6 in abroad as well…. It could allow you to play an all-rounder or someone like (Ravindra) Jadeja at 7 and three fast bowler. Of course Jadeja has to up his own batting. It will give a balance and option to the team. Whether they would have the courage to do it abroad, remains to be seen,” said the 40-year-old cricketer.

Asked if the double-century will give Dhoni a little breathing space after facing the flak as a captain for quite sometime, Dravid said, “I don’t think a lot of these stuff bothers him. That’s why he survived and had a lot of success.”

“This innings was important for him from his own point of view. If you keep losing and doing that day in and day out you can become weary of the job. You need some enjoyment, some reinforcement. There is nothing like scoring runs and winning as a captain, you need that reinforcement and this innings will be an reinforcement,” he said.

Dravid, who now captains Rajasthan Royals in the IPL, was also impressed with R Ashwin, who scalped 12 wickets in the series-opener against Australia.

“Ashwin had a sort of setback but he has spent a lot of time with his coach. I don’t judge the youngsters by their setbacks. He has worked on his game and bowled a lot fuller during the Test, he bowled a lot slower. It is nice to see that he has bounced back from setback and it is a good sign going ahead,” he said.

Asked if Dhoni has become more expressive as a captain, looking at the way he showed his emotions during the first Test, Dravid said, “I don’t think he has changed too much.”

“He is a good captain, of course there are areas which he needs to work on and keep getting better. But the team is changing, so he has to connect with the youngsters on a one-to-one basis a lot more and pass on his experience.

“When he first become captain, there was this famous quote that Dhoni was India’s first grown up captain because he didn’t show his emotions on field. People are different and I think he is passionate and he wants to win. But I don’t think he is someone who will express himself too much. I don’t think his inherent nature will change. I like the fact that he has done some forward thinking, discussions off the field with the bowlers,” he added.

Dravid also didn’t write off Australia but said Michael Clarke and the selection panel need to pick the right team if they want to bounce back from the defeat.

“They had the opportunity to give India a bit of scare. Peter Siddle and Mitchell Starc didn’t bowl particularly well. But they did pose some questions to India. They posted 380 in the first innings on a turning track. But to get a bigger impact they need to get their selection right. If the track keeps turning like it did in Chennai, they have to pick a second spinner,” he said.

“(James) Pattinson was excellent. They have pace but they didn’t get the bowl to reverse swing enough. (Mitchell) Johnson had a lot of success in India. May be they may think of bringing in Johnson and also have (Xavier) Doherty. They are not far off. But they need to have their star players performing. Once they get start, they need to go on.”

Dravid feels the immediate solution for Australia would be to get someone to stop the run flow from one end, something which Monty Panesar did during England’s successful tour of India last year.

Dravid said India need to win the four-match series to get their confidence back before flying to South Africa.

“I agree, it will be different conditions when we tour South Africa, New Zealand and England next, but we need to build the confidence first. I know a lot of questions will be asked, if India lose and people will get dropped, which doesn’t help. From India’s point of view, they need to win first,” he said.

Shane Warne urges Australia to play two spinners against India in Hyderabad test #IndvsAus

Posted: 27 Feb 2013 12:46 AM PST

Shane Warne urges Australia to play two spinners against India in Hyderabad testSpin king Shane Warne has urged Australian captain Michael Clarke and selectors to pick two spinners for the second Test against India in Hyderabad following their Chennai Test mauling.

Debate over the selection of Australia’s second Test team is growing louder as the visitors lick their wounds after their heavy eight-wicket defeat in Chennai, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

Warne said if the best spinning option is to add Xavier Doherty in the Australian team alongside Nathan Lyon then the selectors must do that.
Warne had earlier talked at length with captain Clarke about the composition of the Australian Test team.

Australia is being widely pilloried for relying on pace in its first Test failure, in which Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin routed the visitors with 12 wickets, but the spin-bowling options lack credentials, the paper reported.

Warne’s choice Doherty took just two first-class wickets in two matches this summer, at an average of 80, and he took 3-108 off 24 overs against India A in a tour match.

An accomplished one-day tweaker, Doherty has taken three wickets in two Tests at an average of 108, being jettisoned after taking 1-158 off 27 overs against England in Adelaide in 2010. His overall first-class record is 122 wickets from 52 games at 44.56.

All-rounder Steve Smith, a shock selection in the Test squad, has taken three Test wickets in five matches at 73, and has become more of a part-time bowler since his last Test in January 2011.

Inexperienced Victorian off-spinning all-rounder Glenn Maxwell seems to have stronger claims, having taken his 27 first-class wickets at 33, but his bowling has tended to play second fiddle to his batting, especially in short-form cricket, and he averages 42 from his 24 first-class knocks. (ANI)

James Pattinson could be rested for India-Australia Hyderabad test #IndvsAus

Posted: 27 Feb 2013 12:15 AM PST

James Pattinson could be rested for India-Australia Hyderabad testAustralia’s leading pace man James Pattinson, who performed brilliantly in the first Test against India in Chennai, could be rested for the next Test in Hyderabad with team hierarchy desperate not to risk the fast bowler breaking down again.

There is only a three-day turnaround until the second Test begins on Saturday, and Australia will consider what effect the rigours of the Chennai defeat had on the 22-year-old Victorian, who was making his international return from a lower rib injury suffered against South Africa in November, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

India completed an eight-wicket win here on Tuesday morning, successfully managing a 50-run chase after Australian debutant Moises Henriques was left stranded on 81 not out. The home side leads the four-Test Border-Gavaskar Trophy series 1-0.

Pattinson, along with NSW all-rounder Henriques, was a leading light for Australia, claiming 5-96 in the first innings including five of India’s top seven batsmen, and adding another in their brief second dig.

Pattinson is coming off what the team’s high-performance staff regard as a low base, entering the first Test with only a Sheffield Shield appearance in January and a two-day tour game in Chennai, as well as a cameo in club cricket last month, the paper said.

After being used carefully by captain Michael Clarke earlier in the match Pattinson bowled only six overs in two full sessions on Saturday, but devastated the India top order in the process, the paper added.

The concern with Pattinson’s workload is due to his previous breakdowns, as after starring against South Africa in Brisbane, he went down during the second Test in Adelaide, wiping him out for the rest of the international summer, the paper reported.

Selectors receive advice from the high-performance team on players’ workloads and fitness before every match, and then make a decision, and therefore there is a probability the quick could be rested in the next Test. (ANI)

Zaheer Abbas feels Pakistan will bounce back in ODIs against South Africa #PakvsSA

Posted: 26 Feb 2013 11:52 PM PST

Zaheer Abbas feels Pakistan will bounce back in ODIs against South AfricaDespite Pakistan’s disappointing performance in the three-match Test series against host South Africa, former Pakistani batsman Zaheer Abbas has said he feels that the visitors could still bounce back in the limited overs’ series.

Abbas said the batsmen performed horribly in the Test series and it appeared as if the team didn’t prepare for the series at all, reports The News.

He said the team needs to be strong not only in the bowling and batting department, but should also perform well in fielding in order to beat a top team like South Africa.

However, Abbas said Pakistan has been playing well in ODIs and also in T20s in recent past and therefore he expects the team to perform well in the coming T20 and ODI series.

But he was quick to add that the team must now look forward and forget the Test performance to keep their morale high.

Pakistan will be playing two T20 matches and a comprehensive five-match ODI series against South Africa, which begins March 1. (ANI)

Extreme opposites do not attractWanting Different Things out of Life

You differ in what you want out of life to the point there is no compromise; if you want children and your date is adamant that they do not that is never a good sign for the relationship. The desire to travel the world could be had by your partner while you only want to settle down in one spot and spend the rest of your life. Different goals and visions of the life that you want can mean that the two of you are not compatible at all, especially when neither of you is willing to compromise.

The things that you both want out of life should be discussed before you make plans to spend your life with the one that you are dating. Important issues can arise later if the two of you do not see things the same way, if it turns out neither of you is willing to compromise then things are not likely to work out in the long run.

Lifestyles and Tastes Vary To Much

The lifestyles that you and your date have should be compatible, because too many differences will make you uncomfortable in the relationship. You may be into partying and staying out all night while your date is the type to be in church for every service and goes to bed early. The two of you finding a balance to these lifestyles can be difficult. One of you being a workaholic while the other prefers to spend as much time as possible relaxing can cause problems as well. Former Pakistan captains urges for total revamp of Pakistan Cricket #PakvsSA

Posted: 26 Feb 2013 12:45 AM PST

Former Pakistan captains urges for total revamp of Pakistan CricketFormer captains have stressed the need for a total revamp of the failing system of Pakistani cricket and urged for more focus on Tests after the team’s humiliating 3-0 defeat by South Africa.

Stating that Pakistan went into the series unprepared for the demands of the Tests, which is the longest form of the game, former captain Aamir Sohail said that Pakistan’s defeat was predictable and the team paid the price for the lack of Test cricket which was advantageous for the well-equipped South Africa, the Daily Times reports.

A former chief selector, Sohail also underlined the need for Pakistan to take proper measures at the grassroots level, saying that Pakistan is not doing anything to remove the technical faults of an emerging player whereas South Africa have followed Australia in conquering the world with their work.

Urging Pakistan to focus more on Tests, another former captain Rashid Latif said that Pakistan should have separate players for Tests and one-dayers, adding that the poor show of players who feel that they can play in all three forms is a problem for the team’s performance.

However, Pakistan now has the chance to regain some pride as they take on South Africa in two Twenty20s and five one-day internationals, the report added. (ANI)

Misbah-ul-Haq blames lack of test cricket and the conditions for series whitewash #PakvsSA

Misbah-ul-Haq blames lack of test cricket and the conditions for series whitewashPakistani captain Misbah-ul-Haq has blamed the lack of Test cricket played by his team and their inexperience in settling in different conditions responsible for the 3-0 Test series whitewash by South Africa.

Stating that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) should consider the fact that the lack of a proper schedule for the squad is responsible for the low amount of Test cricket compared to other countries, the captain said that his team plays only four or five Tests a year, Sport24 reports.

Misbah also said that the lack of Tests is worrying for developing good Test players and for making sure that there are a suitable number of players for the team, and added that the team also needed different pitches to play on for adapting to the grounds at Australia, South Africa, New Zealand and England.

Stressing the need for good sporting pitches for fast bowlers, Misbah said that such pitches are necessary to help his team with the proper technique and for adapting to different conditions.

Misbah also lamented his team’s inability to adapt to the pace and bounce of South African wickets, and held responsible the different texture and softness of the ground conditions for the poor show.

According to the captain, it was easy for South Africa to exploit the conditions at their home grounds, and combined with their might, they could quite comfortably whitewash Pakistan in every department. (ANI)

India crush Australia by 8 wickets in 1st Test, take 1-0 series lead #IndvsAus

India crush Australia by 8 wickets in 1st Test, take 1-0 series leadIndia clinched the first Test against Australia with a comfortable eight-wicket victory to take a 1-0 lead in the four-match series on Tuesday with their spinners taking all the 20 wickets for only the third time in their Test history.

The Indians took about 25 minutes in the morning to finally bring an end to the stubborn last-wicket partnership between Moises Hendriques (81 not out) and Nathan Lyon (11) as Australia folded up for 241 in their second innings, leaving the hosts a small victory target of 50.

The hosts lost both their openers Murali Vijay (6) and Virender Sehwag (19) before overhauling the target with more than two full sessions to spare.

Cheteshwar Pujara brought about the winning run off Nathan Lyon to trigger off scenes of celebrations in the galleries and the Indian dressing room as the players congratulated and hugged each other.

It was a commendable show by the Indians, who have been under pressure of late following a series of indifferent performances in recent times, as they dominated the game right through at the M A Chidambaram stadium where the conditions suited the home team.

While captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni expectedly got the man-of-the-match award for his game-changing knock of 224, off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin scalped 12 wickets in the match to also play a stellar role.

The margin of victory could have been bigger had the Indians managed to get rid of the last wicket pair on Day 4 itself and had they not lost both their openers despite chasing a small total.

The two teams will now travel to Hyderabad for the second Test be played at the Rajiv Gandhi International stadium from March 2 to 6.

This was the third time that Indian spinners managed to take all the 20 wickets in a match.

The first time that Indian spinners bagged all the 20 wickets was at this same venue against England in 1972-73 while the second such instance was against New Zealand in Auckland in 1975-76.

Resuming at the overnight score of 232/9, Australia could add just nine runs to their tally much to the relief of the Indians who had a frustrating time trying to dismiss the last-wicket pair.

It took the Indians just nine overs on Day 5 to put an end to Australia’s resistance when Ravindra Jadeja broke the agonisingly long last-wicket partnership between Henriques and Lyon.

Lyon, who showed a lot of grit and temperament to hang on, was dismissed by left-arm spinner Jadeja, caught by Murali Vijay at short-leg.

Henriques followed up his first innings half-century with another gutsy unbeaten 81 and together with Lyon added 66 runs for the final wicket to take the match into the fifth and final day and prevent India from recording an innings victory.

Chasing the paltry 50-run target, India suffered two early blows in the form of openers Sehwag and Vijay, whose flop show with the bat continued.

The opening duo of Sehwag and Vijay put on 16 runs before the former was the first one to depart.

Vijay started his innings with a bang, smacking Lyon straight over his head for a six, his only scoring shot of the innings.

But that was all the local boy could manage in the innings as he was caught by Henriques at mid-off off James Pattinson when he tried to go a big drive in the next over.

Cheteshwar Pujara joined the action after Vijay’s dismissal and had to go through some torrid time in the first few deliveries he faced from off-spinner Lyon.

Pujara gave a half chance to the Australians which the visitors failed to pounce on. The ball hit the top of Pujara’s pad and then the glove before crashing into wicket-keeper Mathew Wade’s mid-riff as the batsman tried to pad Lyon away in the fourth over.

But there was more drama in store as Sehwag (19) also returned to the pavilion, edging a Lyon delivery to Michael Clarke at first slip in the second delivery of the ninth over.

Sehwag’s dismissal marked the arrival of Sachin Tendulkar at the crease and the champion seemed in a hurry to finish off the chase as he clobbered Lyon for two consecutive sixes in the first two deliveries he faced in the innings.

Tendulkar seemed to be fine touch as he timed the ball perfectly and provided some entertainment to the few thousand spectators who had come to the stadium to watch India’s victory.

Pujara and Tendulkar ensured that there were no further damage for India as they got the required runs in 11.3 overs.

India vs Australia Post Match Presentation – 1st Test – Chennai 2013 #IndvsAus

Dhoni: ‘I have spent a lot of time in Chennai. I made my debut here. It was good to see the crowd coming to watch this match. It was important to play some big shots. The motive was to play some shots and spread the field. The first partnership was important. Tendulkar and Pujara batted well. The partnership between Kohli and Tendulkar was important as well and it gave the rest of the batsmen a good platform. The lower order contributed importantly. Ashwin bowled brilliantly and he was well supported by Harbhajan. He did not use much of his variations. He bowled in the right areas and varied his speed. It is important to be focused as the series progresses. I never expected I will get a double ton as I never expected to play a Test for my country.’

MS Dhoni is the MoM for his sublime knock of 224.

Michael Clarke: ‘Full credit has to go to India. Dhoni played some outstanding cricket. The knock changed the game totally. Ashwin bowled really well. Henriques played very well on his debut. We have to improve certain areas in the game. The wicket was very good. It looked a lot worse than it played. The second innings was tough but there are no excuses. We have to play really good cricket in the second Test.’

AB De Villiers lauded debutant Kyle Abbott as ‘dream performance’ #PakvsSA

AB De Villiers lauded debutant Kyle Abbott as 'dream performance'South African veteran A B De Villiers has lauded debutant seamer Kyle Abbott, saying that he had delivered a ‘dream performance’ after South Africa enforced the follow-on in the third day of the final Test against Pakistan on Saturday.

According to De Villiers, Abbott had delivered a performance that a captain dreamt of, adding that the seamer has a lot of control which pressurises the opposing batsman, Sport24 reports.

De Villiers, who scored his 16th Test century on the same day and took South Africa over their initial target of 300 runs in their first innings, also said that Abbott had made important breakthroughs in the match by hauling in a number of big wickets for the Proteas.

After South Africa made 409 in their first innings, Pakistan were bowled out for 156 and captain Graeme Smith made the surprising decision to enforce the follow-on, the report added. (ANI)
