New Zealand with a 1-0 lead in the series will look to the series the series here in the 2nd ODI at Napier. New Zealand played better game than England and took the series lead. Half of the England XI came into play their first game in the last ODI and haven’t adjusted to the conditions well. England will definitely look to level the series here to save themselves from another series defeat. England last won a series in 1992 and they will definitely like to win this time. New Zealand put up an all round show in last match but injury issues in the team might create problem for them. Ross Taylor hasn’t scored since his return in the squad and that a major point of concern for the Kiwis. For England, Alastair Cook needs to come back in his winning form as well.

Preview : England vs New Zealand, 2nd ODI, Napier 2013 #EngvsNZ

Posted: 19 Feb 2013 09:05 AM PST

Preview England vs New Zealand, 2nd ODI, Napier 2013Coming after a rare ODI series win in South Africa, New Zealand were confident of doing well against the world number three ODI outfit, England, at home, and they have done one better as the Kiwis eye their second consecutive ODI series by winning the 2nd ODI at McLean Park, Napier on Wednesday.

After being under pump twice, New Zealand fought back well to clinch a thriller at Seddon Park with Kane Williamson and Brendon McCullum starring with the bat for the hosts. But the win for the Kiwis came at a cost. Opener Martin Guptill was ruled out for the 2nd ODI after he pulled a hamstring during the first ODI retiring hurt while batting, even though he came back in style to seal the game in his team’s favour, while left-arm pacer Mitchell McClenaghan, who picked up four wickets at Seddon Park, has been sidelined for the rest of the series after suffering a side strain.

Hamish Rutherford and Tim Southee have been drafted in as replacements for the duo for the 2nd ODI and with an all-round superb domestic performance, Southee will be eager to get back into the international mix after being sidelined for two months because of injury.

England looked a bit flustered in the first ODI as half of the team did not even have a practice knock before the series. Ian Bell, Jonathan Trott and Joe Root all got starts but got out at the wrong time, but it is Trott who is under the scanner for his 90-ball 68. But it is highly unlikely that England would be changing their playing XI. For New Zealand, Andrew Ellis, who had a forgettable day will the ball in the first ODI might sit out for Trent Boult.

Ross Taylor, who is making a comeback into the New Zealand setup after a dispute with the administration, failed to get going but looked in good touch in his brief stay of 22. England would be in a better shape in the 2nd ODI and with the best batting pitch on offer in New Zealand at McLean Park, it is likely that England will take the series to the decider at Auckland.

Probable Teams
New Zealand: 1 Hamish Rutherford, 2 BJ Watling, 3 Kane Williamson, 4 Ross Taylor, 5 Brendon McCullum (captain and wicketkeeper), 6 Grant Elliott, 7 James Franklin, 8 Nathan McCullum, 9 Kyle Mills, 10 Trent Boult, 11 Tim Southee

England : 1 Alastair Cook (captain), 2 Ian Bell, 3 Jonathan Trott, 4 Joe Root, 5 Eoin Morgan, 6 Jos Buttler (wicketkeeper), 7 Chris Woakes, 8 Stuart Broad, 9 Graeme Swann, 10 James Anderson, 11 Steven Finn.

Australia’s pace attack key to success against India : John Buchanan #IndvsAus

Australia's pace attack key to success against India John BuchananAustralia might have taken five spinners to India to tackle the dust-bowl tracks but former coach John Buchanan feels it is the seamers who are likely to make a difference in the four-Test series starting February 22 in Chennai.

“You don’t take spinners just for the sake of taking a spinner. Indians are so used to playing spin bowling, there is no guarantee they are going to make an impact in a series,” Buchanan was quoted as saying by Sydney Morning Herald.

The 59-year-old former cricketer feels Australia has a good bowling unit but they need to adjust to the conditions in the sub-continent.

“I do think it’s a good pace attack; it depends how it adapts to the conditions it’s about to face,” Buchanan said.

“They’re going into India now in February/March. That makes a difference as well because some of the wickets still provide a little bit of bounce and pace at the start of the summer, whereas potentially by this time of their season wickets have been subjected to plenty of heat and plenty of wear and possibly the ability for pace bowlers to extract good pace and bounce are limited.

“It really means that the pace bowlers have really got to look at their strategies with an old ball and what they can do with that,” added the current New Zealand director of cricket.

Buchanan was head coach during Australia’s historic 2-1 triumph on the subcontinent under the leadership of Adam Gilchrist.

The opening Test between India and Australia starts on Friday in Chennai.

Australian all-rounder Lisa Sthalekar retires from international cricket

Australian all-rounder Lisa Sthalekar retires from international cricketIndian-origin Australian all rounder Lisa Sthalekar has announced her retirement from international cricket following their sixth World Cup in Mumbai on Sunday.

33-year old Sthalekar pulled the pin after eight Tests, 125 ODIs and 54 T20 internationals for the Southern Stars, News.com.au reports.

Sthalekar took 2-20 in 10 typically frugal overs in the overnight final before taking a spectacular diving catch for the final West Indian wicket, a fitting way to go out for one of Australian cricket’s best-prepared athletes, the paper said.

The Sydneysider, the first woman to score 1000 runs and take 100 wickets in ODIs, is ranked the number one T20 all-rounder and bowler in the world and holds the No.2 ranking in the same ODI categories.

Sthalekar said the decision to retire had not come easily, but believes to finish her international career by playing in a successful ICC Women’s World Cup in the country of her birth is quite special for her.

Sthalekar added women’s cricket has changed a lot during her time in the game and it’s been an honour to witness this evolution first hand.

The all rounder added they have seen at this year’s World Cup that the standard of women’s cricket across the world has grown immensely in the last few years alone.

Sthalekar added she would like to continue her involvement in all aspects of the game, adding cricket has given her a great deal during her life and she wants to be able to give something back, whether it be through coaching, mentoring or other avenues.

Sthalekar has been recognised with several awards through her outstanding career, including the Belinda Clark Award in 2007 and 2008, the WNCL Player of the Year in 2007/08 and 2011/12 and being nominated for the ICC Women’s Player of the Year in 2007 and 2008 and the ICC Women’s T20 Player of the Year in 2012. Rory Kleinveldt replaces Morne Morkel for the Pakistan vs South Africa 3rd Test #PakvsSA

Rory Kleinveldt replaces Morne Morkel for the Pak SA 3rd TestRory Kleinveldt will replace fellow fast bowler Morne Morkel in the South African team for the third and final Test against Pakistan starting at Centurion on Friday.

Selection convener Andrew Hudson confirmed on Tuesday that Morkel would not play because of a hamstring injury which twice forced him off the field during the second Test which ended in Cape Town on Sunday.

It will be Kleinveldt’s fourth Test cap.

He made his debut when South Africa opted for an all-pace attack in the first Test against Australia in Brisbane last November and made two subsequent appearances when Vernon Philander was unfit.

Dolphins fast bowler Kyle Abbott, the leading wicket-taker in South Africa’s domestic four-day competition which ended recently, has been added to the squad as cover.

South Africa, who won both the first two Tests, will go into the final match knowing they are guaranteed a $450,000 bonus for being on top of the International Cricket Council rankings at the April 1 cut-off date.

South African Test squad: Graeme Smith (capt), Alviro Petersen, Hashim Amla, Jacques Kallis, AB de Villiers, Faf du Plessis, Dean Elgar, Robin Peterson, Vernon Philander, Dale Steyn, Rory Kleinveldt, Jacques Rudolph, Kyle Abbott.

India-Australia series a test of leadership skills of Dhoni and Clarke, says Glenn McGrath #IndvsAus

Posted: 19 Feb 2013 03:30 AM PST

India-Australia series a test of leadership skills of Dhoni and Clarke, says Glenn McGrathGlenn McGrath feels the upcoming Test series between India and Australia could see a keen leadership contest, with both captains seeking to make a mark for different reasons.

McGrath said that it will be a test of character and leadership skills for both Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Michael Clarke and how they marshal their players could be the key in the keenly awaited series.

"It's sure that the series is going to be keenly contested and both captains I think would try to be up there," McGrath said.

"Dhoni is under pressure as India lost against England at home under him. But it's a chance for him to make amends. He is respected by all teams and it will be an important series for him," McGrath told a television channel.

"Clarke has enjoyed the best year and rightfully he is the best Australian player. He would want to do well against India in India which would be another big achievement for him. So, it's going to be an interesting series," he said.

Meanwhile, Jeff Lawson has said the retirement of some batting greats and the recent failure to dominate England with spinners on home soil make India a "vulnerable" side.

The former Australian fast bowler said India's defeat against England despite playing on favourable dust-bowls was a big positive for the visiting Australian side.

"The forthcoming Test series presents major challenges for both teams. India have recently lost 1-2 to England at home. Two conclusions come from that result: That England are tough, confident and classy, and that India are on the wane and are vulnerable," Lawson said.

Lawson said in the absence of Anil Kumble, Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman, combined with ageing stars such as Zaheer Khan, the best India could do was to prepare turning tracks. But even this ploy failed against England.

"They have an ageing and declining team. Spin has been seen as the short-term and interminable response from selectors. When in doubt, revert to type. But India have been beaten at their own dusty game and that result gives Australia significant hope," Lawson wrote in his column.

Lawson said India's fate in the series, beginning Friday, would hinge on how young batsmen Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli fare.

"Virat Kohli was feisty and successful last summer in Australia and is quickly assuming the mantle of the keystone batsmen. He is young and aggressive."

Mahela Jayawardene ruled out of Bangladesh series #SLvsBan

Posted: 19 Feb 2013 12:48 AM PST

Mahela Jayawardene ruled out of Bangladesh seriesFormer Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene has been ruled out of the forthcoming home series against Bangladesh because of a finger injury.

Jayawardene, 35, who is Sri Lanka’s highest run-getter in Tests, dislocated a finger in his left hand while fielding during a domestic first-class match in Colombo on Sunday.

Scans of the injury have been sent to Australia for further analysis, Sri Lanka Cricket said in a statement, adding that the batsman could be out of action for four to six weeks.

Bangladesh are due to play two Tests, three one-dayers and one Twenty20 international during their month-long tour of Sri Lanka in March.

Jayawardene, who resigned as captain after the recent Australian tour, has scored 10,806 runs in 138 Tests at an average of 49.56 with 31 centuries.

He also has 10,892 one-day runs from 391 matches with 15 hundreds, and 1,293 runs in 46 Twenty20 internationals.

All-rounder Angelo Mathews replaced Jayawardene as Test and one-day captain, while Dinesh Chandimal will lead in Twenty20 matches.

Pakistan batsman were psychologically under pressure, says Inzamam-ul-Haq #PakvsSA

Posted: 18 Feb 2013 10:05 PM PST

Pakistan batsman were psychologically under pressure, says Inzamam-ul-HaqFormer captain Inzamam-ul-Haq feels Pakistan were psychologically under pressure against South Africa and advised the national team players to stop being overawed by the world’s number one Test team.

“I firmly believe we were psychologically under pressure from South Africa since the start of the series. You look at the batting strike rate of our players and you can see they never tried to dominate the South African bowlers even after settling down which was the key to success in this series,” Inzamam said from Lahore.

South Africa, the number one ranked team in Test cricket, took a winning 2-0 lead in the three-match Test series on Sunday after defeating Pakistan by four wickets in the second Test at Capetown.

Inzamam, who was due to be in South Africa with the team as batting consultant, said he would have advised the players to play positively against the South African bowlers.

“It is true that our pace attack was not of the same quality that we had when we won tests in South Africa in 1998 or 2007 but still our batsmen needed to show a more proactive approach,” he said.

Inzamam, considered one of the batting greats in Pakistan cricket, said it was obvious on the field that Pakistani players were overawed by their opponents and under pressure because of their world number one status.

“We should have won the second Test. We had them on the mat in the first innings but a couple of bad decisions let them off the hook. Our batsmen than batted passively in the second innings when there was a need to play attacking cricket and put them under more pressure,” Inzamam noted.

The former captain admitted that South Africa’s bowling attack was one of the best in the world but not unplayable.

“Once Younis and Asad Shafiq scored centuries in the first innings I thought the remaining batsmen would take a lead from that,” he added.

Pakistan lost the first Test in Johannesburg by 211 runs after crumbling to 49 all out in the first innings in the face of the hosts’ hostile pace bowling attack.

Inzamam, who hit an unbeaten 92 in Pakistan’s last Test win in South Africa in 2007, said that the scoring rate of the Pakistani batsmen was a big concern.

“On the third day last session our batsmen scored at just two runs per over when we should have been going after their bowling. You look at their batting they kept on scoring at around four per over all the time to put our bowling under pressure,” he said.

Inzamam said he was always available to help the Pakistan team and if the board asked him again to work with the players he would definitely give it a thought.

“After the Indian tour I don’t know but the board didn’t talk to me about going to South Africa as batting consultant,” he said.

Pakistan’s former captain, Moin Khan said that the national team needed to play positive cricket not only on the field but in their minds.

“You can only beat a top side if you believe you can do it. I thought we had the second test in the bag but we didn’t go for the kill when required,” he said.

Shahid Afridi likely to be recalled for ODI series against South Africa #PakvsSA

Posted: 18 Feb 2013 09:18 PM PST

Shahid Afridi likely to be recalled for ODI series against South AfricaFormer Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi is likely to be recalled to the one-day squad for the forthcoming series against South Africa after a string of batting failures in the Test series.

Sources close to the national selection committee said that Afridi, who was dropped for the one-day series in India after playing in just two T20 matches, would be picked for the entire limited over series in South Africa.

“Pakistan plays the T20 matches first and than five one-day internationals. Afridi is likely to be picked in both squads,” one source told PTI.

Afridi, who has played 349 ODIs, has recently shown some good form in the Pakistan A series with Afghanistan.

The source said that the national selectors would be making plenty of changes for the limited over series after the test squad’s failure in South Africa.

“The selectors will be selecting Umar Akmal, Kamran Akmal, Ahmed Shahzad, Afridi, Wahab Riaz, Shoaib Malik and Aizaz Cheema (if Junaid Khan does not recover from an injury), Umar Amin and Zulfiqar Babar for the limited over series,” the source disclosed.

He said the selectors were also disappointed with the performance of the Test squad and some of the decisions taken by the team management/tour selection committee in South Africa.

“If Junaid who is unfit right now is okay, he, Mohammad Irfan and Ehsan Adil will be retained for the one-day series as well but there is a debate going on sending back Umar Gul, Rahat Ali and Tanvir Ahmed from South Africa after the test series,” the source said.

Rahat and Tanvir were flown to South Africa as reinforcements before the first Test on the request of the team management.

Rahat played in the first Test and went wicketless while Tanvir played the second Test and picked up only one wicket.

The source said there was no chance of a comeback for experienced allrounder, Abdul Razzaq as he was not playing domestic cricket.

“The selectors are developing a clear consensus that they need to send some dashing and aggressive players to South Africa as it has been noticed that the Test players were pretty shaken against the South Africans even psychologically,” he said.
