Pakistan vs South Africa 2nd Test – Match evenly poised at the close of Day 3 #PakvsSA

Posted: 16 Feb 2013 10:38 AM PST

Pakistan vs South Africa 2nd Test - Match evenly poised at the close of Day 3Robin Peterson and Dale Steyn led a South African fightback which left the second Test against Pakistan evenly poised at the end of the third day at Newlands on Saturday. Pakistan were 100 for 3 in their second innings at the close, a lead of 112.

Peterson hit 84 to enable South Africa to get within 12 runs of Pakistan’s first innings total of 338 and Steyn bowled at blistering pace to take two wickets as Pakistan lost their first three second innings wickets for 45 runs. At that stage South Africa were slightly on top but Azhar Ali and captain Misbah-ul-Haq shared a largely cautious unbeaten partnership of 55 to see Pakistan through to the close without further loss.

South Africa were hampered by a recurrence of a hamstring injury to Morne Morkel, who left the field after bowling one ball in his second spell. He had to stop bowling because of the same injury in the first innings as well and seems unlikely to take the ball again in the match. Peterson led a fighting performance by South Africa’s lower order batsmen as they recovered from an overnight 139 for 5 to reach 326 all out.

Pakistan’s first innings lead of 12 runs was soon shown to be negligible as Steyn and Vernon Philander both took wickets in their first overs. Mohammad Hafeez was comprehensively trapped leg before wicket by a ball which swung into him. After the briefest of consultations with opening partner Nasir Jamshed he walked off without seeking a review. In the next over Jamshed fell in similar fashion to Philander. After discussion with new partner Azhar, he started to indicate he wanted a review but appeared to be told by umpire Steve Davis that he had taken longer than the 15 seconds allowed. Replays showed the ball would have clipped his bails so the decision would have been upheld.

Azhar and first innings centurion Younis Khan battled through some testing bowling against Steyn, Philander and Morkel. Bowling downwind in his second spell, Steyn was timed at more than 146kmh and troubled both batsmen before Younis, forced on to the back foot, chopped the ball onto his stumps. After being dismissed without scoring in the first innings, Misbah took 18 balls to score his first runs in the second innings. Scoring slowed to a crawl, with left-arm spinner Peterson conceding only four runs in his first eight overs. But Misbah gained in confidence, three times hitting Peterson for six as he advanced to 36 not out. Azhar was unbeaten on 45.

Overnight batsmen AB de Villiers and Dean Elgar started South Africa’s recovery when they took their sixth wicket stand to 55 before Elgar was caught at slip off Saeed Ajmal for 22. At that stage offspinner Ajmal had taken all six wickets but he had no further success, finishing with 6 for 96. The left-handed Peterson batted positively from the start, shrugging off a poor run of batting form which had yielded just 15 runs in his previous seven international innings, including five noughts. He went to his second Test fifty off 73 balls and went on to pass his previous best score of 61 against Bangladesh in Dhaka ten years ago.

De Villiers fell to Mohammad Irfan for 61 in the first over with the second new ball after a seventh wicket stand of 46 with Peterson. But Peterson and Philander (22) added an innings-best 67 for the eighth wicket. The last two wickets brought another 49 runs before Peterson was last out, caught on the long on boundary off Mohammad Hafeez. Peterson made his 84 runs off 106 balls with 15 fours. The tall Irfan, playing in his first Test, took 3 for 86 and troubled the batsmen with steep bounce.

Sachin Tendulkar bats for 2 hours in practice session ahead of Australia series #IndvsAus

Posted: 16 Feb 2013 09:00 AM PST

Sachin Tendulkar bats for 2 hours in practice session ahead of Australia seriesThe Indian team on Saturday began their three-day training camp ahead of their Test series against Australia starting next week with two hectic practice sessions, with senior batsman Sachin Tendulkar returning in the mix after his retirement from ODI cricket.

Tendulkar, who struggled against England in the recent home Test series, batted for two hours and 15 minutes in two separate sessions, one in the morning and another in afternoon, lasting five-and-a-half hours in total.

In the morning session, Tendulkar batted along with Virat Kohli for 45 minutes on the centre pitch at Chinnaswamy Stadium, facing Ashok Dinda, Bhuvaneshwar Kumar, Pragyan Ojha and Ravichandran Ashwin.

In the second session which began at 2 pm, Tendulkar batted on the centre pitch for 20 minutes facing top Indian bowlers. After that he hung at the nets for one hour and 10 minutes, focussing more on his shots in contrast to the morning session when he did not try anything unusual and paid attention to the basics.

Interestingly, the out-of-system young and unknown raw bowlers who were called for service by the support staff bowled at Tendulkar, who did not ask them to bowl to his wishes.

Tendulkar also rolled his arms against Harbhajan Singh, who enjoyed his batting by lifting ‘net bowlers’ out of the park a couple of times and even breaking windowpane glasses at pavilion area.

Tendulkar also hurled ‘throwdowns’ with leather balls to Virat Kohli who worked on his technique to sort out some grey areas in his batting.

Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni got down to the details of batting than wicket-keeping. He batted for nearly 25 minutes.

In the morning session, new face Shikhar Dhawan and Murali Vijay were seen sweating it out at the side nets using the ‘high altitude mask’, which helps in achieving increased mental and physical stamina levels.

Virender Sehwag, Vijay, Ajinkya Rahane, Dhawan, Cheteshwar Pujara and Ravindra Jadeja also batted in both sessions.

They also faced ‘throwdowns’ from India’s fast bowling coach Joe Dawes with tennis balls to prepare themselves for negotiating short-pitched stuff which Australian pace battery could unleash in the series starting in Chennai on February 22.

Team India coach Duncan Fletcher-led support staff has engineered a plot to use the services of out-of-the-system 15 young and unknown raw talents to bowl at the top order batsmen over the next three day

These raw talents, comprising of nine pacers and six spinners, have been picked from open trials at various cities before being sent to regional academies in Mumbai, Chennai and Mohali to whet their skills.

The programme is the brainchild of former NCA Director of Operations and the current chief selector Sandeep Patil.

These ‘net bowlers’ will take off weight from the Indian bowlers during the camp ahead of the challenging series against the Australians.

Preview : England vs New Zealand, 1st ODI, Hamilton 2013 #EngvsNZ

Preview England vs New Zealand, 1st ODI, Hamilton 2013New Zealand’s ability to “bounce back”, as captain Brendon McCullum described it, will be seriously put to the test in the first match of their one-day international series against England in Hamilton on Sunday.

“We expected to win the T20 series coming into it and we’re disappointed to lose it,” McCullum told reporters in Wellington on Friday after being beaten in the final Twenty20 game by 10 wickets to go down 2-1 in that series. “I thought we bounced back strongly in the second game,” he added in reference to New Zealand’s victory by 55 runs in Hamilton. “But I expect us to bounce back strongly in the first of the one-dayers.

“That’s a characteristic of this team at the moment. Our ability to bounce back and we are going to have to do so because England will be very confident.” The three-match one-day series against Alastair Cook’s team brings added significance to McCullum’s side as they look towards the 2015 World Cup that New Zealand will co-host with Australia.

New Zealand’s ability to bounce back will be seriously put to the test in the first match of their ODI series against England in Hamilton.

Director of cricket John Buchanan has said the focus for the team over the next two years will be on the one-day game. Coach Mike Hesson has also explained his selections will reduce over the next few months for their tour of England and the Champions Trophy tournament in June as he forms a squad he expects to take the Kiwis through to 2015.

New Zealand are playing their best cricket in the 50-over format, having beaten South Africa 2-1 in a series last month. “It’s less frenetic. You can play okay in parts of the game but you’re not necessarily out of it,” McCullum said when asked if the 50-over game was more suited to his team’s style.

“In one-day cricket, because it lasts a fraction longer, you are able to fight your way back into the game and I think we have a reasonable game plan especially with our batting and obviously we welcome back Kyle Mills who’s an experienced bowler for us in that form of the game.” Mills’s accuracy with the ball will be welcomed by New Zealand after they struggled against England in two of the Twenty20s, bowling too straight and full, unlike England’s pace attack who banged the ball in hard just back of a length.

England’s Twenty20 captain Stuart Broad, who now hands over to one-day and test skipper Cook, said he felt the quick turnaround would not be a problem for the team, given the arrival of world-class players like Cook and off-spinner Graeme Swann. “We have not met up as a one-day group yet,” Broad said. “The guys who have had a month or three weeks off will obviously be finding their way back into cricket and it’s not easy to do in international cricket.

“It’s a pretty tight schedule and it will be important we pick up where we left off (on Friday). “I think the one-day series is over in six days or a week so there’s no time for any slipups and we will have to hit the ground running.” The second match is on Wednesday in Napier with the final game in Auckland on Feb. 23.

Probable XI for both teams:
New Zealand: Martin Guptill, BJ Watling, Kane Williamson, Ross Taylor, Brendon McCullum (capt & wk), Grant Elliott, James Franklin, Nathan McCullum, Kyle Mills, Trent Boult, Mitchell McClenaghan.

England: Alastair Cook, Ian Bell, Jonathan Trott, Joe Root, Eoin Morgan, Jos Buttler (wk), Chris Woakes, Stuart Broad, Graeme Swann, James Anderson, Steven Finn

Gautam Gambhir smashes ton as India A in charge against Australia #IndvsAus

Gautam Gambhir smashes ton as India A in charge against AustraliaStung by his exclusion from the Test squad, Gautam Gambhir replied in the best possible manner by hitting a sparkling century as he guided India A to a comfortable 338 for four against Australia on the opening day of their second and final warm-up game in Chennai on Saturday.

Riding on Gambhir’s 112 alongwith solid half-centuries from Rohit Sharma and Manoj Tiwary, India A batsmen dominated the proceedings for the better part of the 90 overs at the Guru Nanak College ground.

Enroute his 33rd First-Class century, Gambhir faced 162 deliveries hitting 13 fours and three sixes. Rohit was fluent during his innings of 77 while Tiwary, who recently made a comeback to competitive cricket after an injury lay-off, also looked good for a big one as he was batting on 77.

For Australia, left-arm spinner Xavier Doherty staked a claim for a place in the playing XI of the first Test by claiming three for 69.

The day, however, belonged to Gambhir, who was certainly egged up for the occasion and it looked as if the selection committee’s decision of dropping him really spurred the seasoned left-hander as he batted with a lot of purpose.

Opting to bat, Gambhir and find of the Ranji season Jiwanjyot Singh (24) saw off the first hour and half without much difficulty.

Gambhir especially was watchful against the trio of left-arm pacer Mitchell Starc (0/36) and the dangerous Peter Siddle (0/30). He tried to cut down on the dab shot that had brought his downfall but did punish the loose deliveries occasionally when the pacers were in operation.

Jiwanjyot was dismissed by Doherty after an opening stand of 67 but Gambhir found an able ally in Rohit as they added 127 runs for the second wicket.

Once the spinners were introduced, Gambhir was at his majestic best. Whether it was Nathan Lyon (0/97) in 20 overs or rookie left-arm spinner Ashton Agar (0/78 in 13 overs), Gambhir took them to task by using his feet brilliantly.

Both Gambhir and Rohit earmarked Agar as the weak link among the spinners as he was repeatedly lofted for over boundaries.

It turned out to be a satisfactory outing for Rohit also as he flopped badly in the Irani Cup game failing to reach double digits in both innings. He hit eight fours and three sixes in 144 balls and was severe on Agar, repeatedly carting him to every corner of the ground.

Gambhir was finally dismissed on 112 when he was caught by Shane Watson off back-up seamer Moises Henriques’ bowling.

However, by the time he was gone, the 31-year-old left-hander had done what he had set out for.

Rohit was joined by Tiwary, who took some time to settle down but then played some delightful strokes to show that he is slowly and surely getting back to his full fitness.

The Bengal captain hit 12 boundaries and a six during his 112-ball knock and will be eagerly waiting to complete his century on Sunday.

Rohit should blame himself for missing out on a well-deserved three-figure mark as he was caught by glovesman Matthew Wade off Doherty’s bowling. Rohit-Tiwary duo added 71 runs for the third wicket.

Abhishek Nayar, who has the most unusual batting stance in domestic cricket, started off with a boundary but continued his failure at the big stage as he became Doherty’s third victim of the day giving a catch to close-in fielder Ed Cowan.

Tiwary was joined by another in-form man in Karnataka glovesman CM Gautam as they added 66 runs for the unfinished fifth wicket stand.

At stumps, Gautam raced his way to 34 with five boundaries and has proved to be an ideal foil for Tiwary.

The Australian spinners proved to be disappointing as the trio of Gambhir, Rohit and Tiwary milked the bowling with consumate ease.

The Aussie spin troika of Lyon, Doherty and Agar has been hit for 244 runs in their 49 overs which is an indication of the struggle that they will be having on a Chepauk track which is known to be low and slow in nature.

Brief Scores: India A 338 for 4 (Gautam Gambhir 112, Manoj Tiwary 77*; Xavier Doherty 3 for 69) vs Australia

India retain the no. 1 spot in ODI rankings, 3rd in the T20 rankings

Posted: 16 Feb 2013 01:59 AM PST

India retain the no. 1 spot in ODI rankings, 3rd in the T20 rankingsIndia retained the top spot in the latest ICC ODI Championship table released in Dubai on Saturday, while Virat Kohli and Suresh Raina slipped in the Twenty20 batting charts.

Kohli slipped two places to be placed eighth, followed by Raina at ninth. Yuvraj Singh was at 14th after a fall of one place while Gautam Gambhir was down at 17th.

In the T20 bowling chart, Ravichandran Ashwin, the only Indian in the list, slipped two places to be positioned 18th.

In the all-rounder’s list, Yuvraj retained the third position with 337 points.

In the team rankings for ODI, topper India have 119 points, followed by England and Australia.

England have an opportunity to reclaim the number-one ranking on the ODI Championship table when they take on New Zealand in a three-match series that commences in Hamilton from tomorrow.

England are on equal points with India (119 ratings points) but are ranked behind the world champions as ratings are calculated beyond the decimal point.

If England win all three matches, they will reclaim the number-one ranking.

In the T20 rankings, England’s Alex Hales and Steven Finn, along with West Indies’ Sunil Narine, have achieved career-best rankings in the latest list.

The latest rankings were released at the completion of England’s 2-1 series win over hosts New Zealand yesterday and West Indies’ win over Australia in the one-off match.

While Hales has jumped nine places to a career-best fifth in the rankings for T20I batsmen, Sunil Narine has leaped six places to a best-ever third and Steven Finn has moved up 20 places to a career-best sixth in the rankings for T20 bowlers.

Also making an upward movement within the top 10 batters is New Zealand’s Martin Guptill, who has moved up five places, to join former Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene in third place.

We got Jacques Kallis dismissal wrong, admits ICC Officials #PakvsSA

Posted: 15 Feb 2013 10:07 PM PST

South Africa v Pakistan - Second Test - Day TwoThe playing control team in charge of the second Test between South Africa and Pakistan admitted on Friday that a mistake had been made when star home batsman Jacques Kallis was given out.

Kallis was given out caught at short leg off spinner Saeed Ajmal by umpire Steve Davis but the batsman immediately sought a review, which went to television umpire Billy Bowden.

Replays showed the ball had not touched Kallis’ bat before looping to Azhar Ali.

The sequence of events after that was not clear but after numerous replays Kallis was given out leg before wicket.

That was because the pitch map replay indicated the ball would have brushed the outside of his leg stump, which is within the area known as “umpire’s call” where the benefit of the doubt goes according to the decision made by the on-field umpire.

Kallis made two as South Africa struggled to 139 for five in reply to Pakistan’s 338.

The International Cricket Council issued a statement from Dubai acknowledging that “an honest error” had been made.

“The umpires followed usual umpiring principles in giving Kallis out lbw on umpire’s call. The review was for the batsman out caught. This is because the normal principle is that an appeal covers all forms of dismissal,” said the ICC.

“However the playing conditions state that when the third umpire observes that the batsman could be out by another mode of dismissal, the decision being reviewed using DRS should be as if the batsman had been originally given not out.

“Therefore in this instance Kallis, as the point of impact was umpire’s call, should not have been given out.”

Kallis appeared astonished when he was given out and stayed at the wicket, appearing to seek an explanation, before reluctantly heading to the dressing room.

Before the ICC statement was issued, South African team manager Mohammad Moosajee said he could not comment in detail because there was a code of conduct regarding the decision review system.

“All we did was seek clarity from the umpire, which we were happy with,” he said.

“The rule states that if an umpire has given a batsman out and the batsman appeals, he can be given out for something else.”
