Preview : Australia vs West Indies, 5th ODI, Melbourne, 2013 #AusvWI

Preview Australia vs West Indies, 5th ODI, Melbourne, 2013A West Indies’ whitewash well within their sight and grasp, Australia must be itching to get back on the ground to nail the visitors for the fifth time in a row despite a pretty fresh look to the squad for the fifth and final ODI here at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. On the other hand, the best West Indies can hope for is to take home at least one ODI win by making it 4-1.

Even Kieron Pollard’s ton couldn’t save West Indies from their fourth defeat in the ODI on Friday, which the hosts won by five wickets, but their regular skipper Michael Clarke, Matthew Wade, Mitchell Starc and Glenn Maxwell will not be available for selection in Melbourne. A flare-up of Clarke’s hamstring soreness will keep him out, while Wade, Starc and Maxwell have been flown to India early in preparation of the Test series – which attracts most of Cricket Australia’s focus.

In Clarke’s absence, Shane Watson – who celebrated his return from injury with a century in the third ODI – will wear the captain’s armband, with Brad Haddin being recalled to keep wickets. Shaun Marsh’s good run in domestic cricket this season earned him a recall and he could sneak into the eleven replacing George Bailey, who too is carrying a niggle. Opening batsman David Warner is nursing his thumb injury, which means Aaron Finch should continue to open batting with Watson. Finch is still in search of his first big knock since making his ODI debut against Sri Lanka last month. His highest score so far is 38, which came against the West Indies in Canberra.

Fast bowler Nathan Coulter-Nile has been asked to stay with the squad to provide injury cover. But considering the dead nature of this rubber, a debut for him can’t be ruled out. And since Maxwell is away preparing for the Test series in India, Xavier Doherty may also get a chance to show his tricks before flying to India.

Before his unbeaten 109 in the fourth ODI, Pollard had failed miserably, and the visitors will hope Chris Gayle, who sat out of the fourth game with a side injury, can return fit and do the same. However, he will undergo a fitness test on Sunday before getting a look in. If Gayle were to sit out, responsibility to open will once again fall on the pair of Kieran Powell and Johnson Charles, who will have to provide a solid base for the Bravo brothers – Dwayne and Darren – after the batting line-up, barring Pollard, failed in Sydney.

On the bowling front, Sunil Narine remains a threat for Australia, especially with Warner and Clarke not part of the eleven. But it could be good practice for other batsmen in the line-up before they pad up to face the Indian spinners in the subcontinent. Tino Best replaced Kemar Roach in Sydney and should get another run, considering he bowled pretty well.

Playing XIs:
Australia: 1 Shane Watson (capt), 2 Aaron Finch, 3 Phillip Hughes, 4 George Bailey/Shaun Marsh, 5 Adam Voges, 6 Brad Haddin (wk), 7 Mitchell Johnson, 8 James Faulkner, 9 Ben Cutting, 10 Clint McKay, 11 Xavier Doherty.

West Indies: 1 Kieron Powell, 2 Johnson Charles/Chris Gayle, 3 Darren Bravo, 4 Dwayne Bravo, 5 Kieron Pollard, 6 Narsingh Deonarine, 7 Devon Thomas (wk), 8 Darren Sammy (capt), 9 Andre Russell, 10 Sunil Narine, 11 Tino Best.

Big series against Australia : Sachin Tendulkar #IndvsAus

Big series against Australia Sachin TendulkarA morale-boosting century clinched before the much-awaited Test series against Australia, senior Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar on Saturday said the ongoing Irani Cup game has given him good match practice ahead of the big clash.

“It’s a big series against Australia. I am sure everyone is looking forward to it. Always nice to get some match practice before a big series,” Tendulkar, who scored an unbeaten 140 for Ranji champions Mumbai against Rest of India, said before the start of fourth day’s play at the Wankhede Stadium.

India will take on the Australians in a four-Test series starting February 22 in Chennai. It is a crucial assignment for the hosts, who lost 1-2 to England in their previous home series last year.

Talking about his knock on Friday, which helped him equal Sunil Gavaskar’s record of 81 first-class hundreds, Tendulkar said it took him some time to adjust to the pitch.

“It was the kind of surface where you needed to spend a little time to understand the bounce and the pace and the movement off the pitch,” Tendulkar said.

“I had to take a little bit of time. Although I got a boundary off the second ball, I didn’t get deliveries in my hitting zone early on, so I had to wait for my time,” he explained.

The 39-year-old revealed that he has adjusted his guard slightly.

“I keep changing consistently as per the demands. I keep making small changes…I just trusted my instinct. I went how I felt how I needed to go according to the situation. You can’t plan a whole innings at same pace,” he elaborated.

Stuart Broad: Well, credit to the boys for setting a record total, every one contributed. With the ball the plan was to bang it in short and make it uncomfortable for the batsmen, we did that well. I thought a total of 170-180 was par on this surface but to get such a huge total was absolutely unbelievable. I personally felt good with the warm-ups, I thought building pressure was key to our success today, and you cannot forget that catch by Eoin Morgan to send Brendon McCullum back. Probably a game changing one. Hopefully we can continue this and take it forward to Hamilton as well.

Brendon McCullum: We were completely outplayed today, England were brilliant in all departments. We will have to pull up our socks for better show next time around. The slower bowlers bowled pretty well, but England’s timing was perfect. Their bowlers also bowled well, banged it in and changed the pace and that made life very difficult for us even though we started well.

Pakistan Super League postponed due to security fears #PSL

Posted: 08 Feb 2013 10:40 PM PST

Pakistan Super League postponed due to security fearsOrganisers of Pakistan’s first major Twenty20 league, which has been hit by a warning over security fears, Friday postponed the contest but said it was due to the “overwhelming response” from players.

The Pakistan Cricket Board had planned to stage the Pakistan Super League (PSL) from March 26 as the first step towards reviving international cricket in the country.

No international cricket has been played in Pakistan since militants attacked the Sri Lankan team bus during a Test match in Lahore in 2009 and the country is still rocked by almost daily bombings and shootings.

The PCB says around 80 foreign players have already signed for the league but a warning from the Federation of Cricketers Association to international players not to tour has also prompted Cricket Australia and Cricket South Africa to hint their players will not feature in the PSL.

Despite the warnings, the PCB said the reason for rescheduling the event was that they needed more time to tackle the overwhelming response.

“PSL got an overwhelming response from sponsors, broadcasters and players. However, there are several other investors who would like us to give them more time for our various rights,” PSL managing director Salman Sarwar Butt said, without announcing new dates.

The PCB will be hard pressed to find another time slot soon as the sixth edition of the more lucrative and attractive Indian Premier League will be held April 3-May 26.

Reports in Pakistani media suggested that the PSL could also be hit by general elections due in May, with the pre-poll preparations starting next month.

PCB chairman Zaka Ashraf said the extra breathing space would give his board a better opportunity to prepare.

“We envisage that as suggested, the shift in our timelines will drive more interested stakeholders towards the PSL and make this one of the most sought after leagues in the cricketing world,” Ashraf was quoted as saying in the PCB statement.
