With the series leveled at 1-1 both England and New Zealand will be looking to seal the series in the final T20 match at the Westpac stadium in Wellington. England started the series with 40-run win but then New Zealand came back strongly to beat England in 2nd T20. So far both teams have showed their potential and it wont be an easy fight in the final match as well. England can be said as having an upper hand with a strong batting line-up. New Zealand too have showed their bating strength but a little inferior to England. England bowled well in the first T20 but it was the other way round in the last T20. They need to bowl well to restrict New Zealand from scoring runs. It will be an another exciting thriller to watch out for.

Younis Khan, Asad Shafiq century helps Pakistan reach 253 for 5 on Day 1 of 2nd Test #PakvsSA

Younis Khan, Asad Shafiq century helps Pakistan reach 253 for 5 on Day 1 of 2nd TestYounis Khan and Asad Shafiq proved Pakistan’s batsmen had taken some lessons from their heavy defeat to South Africa in the first test after all, as their 219-run partnership allowed the tourists to close day one of the second test on 253-5.

Having been bowled out for 49 in the first innings in Johannesburg, there was an air of familiarity about proceedings on Thursday morning as Pakistan was reduced to 33-4 by South Africa’s formidable pace attack.

However, Younis and Shafiq showed that survival was perfectly possible on a benign surface — particularly once the ball had lost its shine — as they batted for nearly six hours.

Younis was caught behind off the bowling of Vernon Philander for 111 shortly before stumps, but Shafiq was unbeaten on 111 at the close of play.

Having been bowled out for 49 in the crushing first-test loss in Johannesburg, Pakistan’s supporters might have assumed the worst after South Africa won the toss and reduced the tourists to 33-4.

The visitors lost the first test by 211 runs, all 20 of their wickets falling to the Proteas’ quicks, and their insecurities against the Proteas’ fast-bowling battery were clear in the morning session, as Vernon Philander, Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel took ruthless advantage.

Yet Shafiq was one of two batsmen – captain Misbah-ul-Haq being the other – who stood up to the South Africans at the Wanderers and he found an experienced ally in Younis.

South Africa’s pace attack ensured that runs were hard to come by at the start of the second session, but found little assistance from a slow pitch as the ball lost its shine.

The two batsmen opened up as the afternoon wore on, and Younis went to his half-century in 133 balls, before Shafiq reached the landmark – and his 1,000th test run – in the final over before tea.

Graeme Smith had won the toss and elected to bowl in his 100th test as captain of an unchanged South Africa, and his fast bowlers responded superbly.

Philander began Pakistan’s slide in the eighth over. One ball after Nasir Jamshed was dropped in the slips, Philander induced Nasir to step forward into a delivery on off stump and send a thick edge behind to give AB de Villiers the first of his two morning catches.

Steyn got Mohammed Hafeez, on 17, to prod at another moving away off the off stump and into the safe hands of Smith.

Morkel struck a double blow in the 17th over when Azhar Ali drove and edged behind on 4, then Misbah came and lasted four balls without scoring. Misbah fended a short ball off his gloves and sent it to Dean Elgar at short leg.

Sri Lanka named Angelo Mathews as Test and ODI skipper, Dinesh Chandimal as T20 skipper

Sri Lanka named Angelo Mathews as Test and ODI skipper, Dinesh Chandimal as T20 skipperSri Lankan all-rounder Angelo Mathews has been thrust upon the responsibility of leading the Test as well as the ODI side against Bangladesh in the home series next month.

Dinesh Chandimal has been named Mathews’ deputy in Tests and one-dayers, while the young wicket-keeper batsman has been announced as the skipper of the Twenty20 side.

The appointments, made by Sri Lanka Cricket’s national selectors on Thursday, will be for a period of one year, starting March 2013 and definitely aimed at the 2015 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

Mathews takes over the captaincy from veteran Mahela Jayawardene, who was expected to step down after the tour of Australia. Mathews was touted as a future leader for Sri Lanka during the last couple of years. He has the experience of playing 31 Tests and 90 one-day internationals and 38 T20 internationals.

Interestingly, Lasith Malinga, a specialist in the shortest format of the game, was announced as the vice-captain of the T20 side for the above-mentioned period.

The selection committee, headed by former limited-overs veteran Sanath Jayasuriya, has named a 20-man squad for the two-Test series. The four new faces in the mix, yet to play international cricket, are batsmen Ashen Silva and Kithuruwan Vithanage, seamer Dushmantha Chameera, and offspinner Tharindu Kaushal.

The notable absentees from the Test squad are out-of-form Thilan Samaraweera, opening batsman Tharanga Paranavitana and wicket-keeper Prasanna Jayawardene.

The experienced trio of Jayawardene, Kumar Sangakkara and Tillakratne Dilshan have been retained giving the team the right balance of youth and experience.

Sangakkara’s participation in the Test series is subject to his recovery from a fractured hand, an injury he suffered on the tour of Australia.

The fast bowling line-up looks familiar with Nuwan Kulasekara, Chanaka Welegedera, Nuwan Pradeep and Shaminda Eranga. Off-spinner Ajantha Mendis has been rewarded with a recall to Test team.

Sri Lanka will play a total of 2 Tests, 3 ODIs and a lone T20I against Bangladesh with the first Test starting March 8 at Galle.

Test squad: Angelo Mathews (captain), Dinesh Chandimal (vice-captain), Tillakaratne Dilshan, Dimuth Karunaratne, Ashen Silva, Kumar Sangakkara, Lahiru Thirimanne, Mahela Jayawardene, Kushal Janith Perera, Jeevan Mendis, Kithuruwan Vithanage, Ajantha Mendis, Suraj Randiv, Nuwan Kulasekara, Shaminda Eranga, Chanaka Welegedera, Nuwan Pradeep, Dushmantha Chameera, Rangana Herath, Tharindu Kaushal.

2nd Test : South Africa wins toss, opts to field vs Pakistan – 14 Feb 2013 #PakvsSA

Posted: 14 Feb 2013 12:06 AM PST

Toss: South Africa have won the toss and elected to field

Smith: ‘We will be bowling first. Not very sure but feel like there will be some moisture. Newlands does take a bit of turn. We want to control the game. A very proud moment for me and my family (100th Test as captain). We are playing the same team. The guys understand what needs to be done. ‘

Misbah-ul-Haq:‘We would have chosen to bat as well. Junaid and Rahat are out with injuries. Tanveer Ahmed and Irfan are back. I am happy to spend some time in the middle. Important to put a good total on the board. That will be our first target. No other changes except the 2 mentioned.’

Pitch Report: There is not much of a grass covering on this pitch. The colour is a bit brown and there is not much moisture. This will be a much better surface for batting as there are not much cracks. The track will assist the spinners later on. The team that wins the toss should look to bat first.

Teams:
