West Indies in a must win situation after 2 successive defeats in the first two ODIs of the five match series. Darren Sammy was quite confident ahead of the series but things seem to be turning the other way for them. West Indies batsman is a big failure so far in the series with the top order failing to score runs. Chris Gayle may have played some big inning the Caribbean T20 but he surely looked out of form in the ODI series here. Australia on the other hand looked a much better side in the current ODI series. They have bowled well and batting too has been quite good compared to the series against Sri Lanka. West Indies have a big task and they need the win here to keep the series alive. Can West Indies win this series? or Australia will take away the series in the 3rd ODI?

Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif fight spot-fixing bans #pakistan

Posted: 05 Feb 2013 09:15 AM PST

Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif fight spot-fixing bansPakistan cricketers Salman Butt and Mohammad Asif left for Switzerland Tuesday to fight to overturn bans imposed two years ago for spot-fixing.

Captain Butt and fast bowlers Asif and Mohammad Aamer were banned by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for contriving to bowl deliberate no-balls during the Lord’s Test between Pakistan and England in August 2010.

Butt was banned for 10 years, with five suspended, Asif for seven years with two suspended and the then teenager Aamer for five years.

The trio were also jailed by a British court over the scandal in November 2011. All three were released last year after completing half of their sentences.

Aamer, now 20, decided not to pursue his appeal to the Swiss-based Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) after pleading guilty to the charges in Britain.

But Asif’s appeal will be heard in the Lausanne court on Thursday, exactly two years and a day after they were banned, and Butt’s on Friday.

“It’s a high-profile case of two world-class players with the whole cricket world focused on it and we will fight to get the ban overturned,” Asif’s lawyer Ravi Sukul said.

“Asif was a terrific bowler and it was terribly unfortunate that a bowler of his class suffered this, but we will try our best to get this ban overturned and Asif is in high spirits.”

Butt will be represented by another London-based lawyer, Yasin Patel.

Asif, 30, played 23 Tests and 38 one-day internationals and was regarded as one of the best new-ball bowlers in the world.

Butt, 28, was made Test captain on that fateful tour of England, and Aamer was regarded as the fastest emerging bowler in the world.

The ICC will be represented by legal firm Bird and Bird.

Sri Lanka knockout India with 138-run victory in Women’s World Cup 2013 #wwc13 #IndvsSL

Sri Lanka knockout India with 138-run victory in Women's World Cup 2013India were knocked out of the ICC Women’s World Cup after suffering an upset 138-run drubbing at the hands of Sri Lanka in a crucial Group A encounter on Tuesday.

Chasing a challenging total of 283, the hosts put up a pathetic show to be bowled out for 144 in 42.2 overs at the Brabourne Stadium.

Incidentally, this was India’s first defeat to Sri Lanka in 18 matches, having won their previous 16 encounters with one ending in no result.

India lost three wickets for 38 runs in the 13th over, which included opener Poonam Raut, skipper Mithali Raj and last match centurion Harmanpreet Kaur.

Kaur failed to score a run, while Raut (5), Raj (20) were trapped leg before by Eshani Kaushalya and Udeshika Prabodhini, respectively.

The India skipper shone briefly with the bat, striking four fours in the 35 minutes she spent in the middle.

The hosts reached 50 in 17 overs and it was always going to be an uphill task from there on, and they lost left-handed opener Thirushkamini Murugesan at the same score, adding to the woes.

The middle-order failed to forge a partnership and things plummeted for India as they kept losing wickets in quick succession.

India’s best partnership was for the sixth wicket between Jhulan Goswami and Reema Malhotra, who added 37 runs.

Malhotra was the top scorer for India with her 38 coming off 51 balls, and which included two fours.

India needed at least 251 runs to edge out the West Indies by virtue of having a better net run-rate and enter the Super 6 stage.

Sri Lankan skipper Shashikala Siriwardene and Chamani Seneviratne bagged two wickets each.

Earlier, Sri Lanka’s batting fired in unison as they posted a competitive 282 for five.

Deepika Rasangika led the way with a knock of 84 while Kaushalya provided the late impetus with a breezy, unbeaten 31-ball 56 to propel the visitors.

Yashoda Mendis (55) and Shashikala Siriwardene (56) were the other contributors for Sri Lanka.

But it was the match winner against England, Kaushalya’s blinder of a knock that lifted the Lankans. Her innings was studded with six fours and three sixes.

Opting to bat, Sri Lanka lost their first wicket in the first over itself, when left-hander Chamari Athapaththu was caught at first slip by Raj off pacer Goswami.

But Mendis and one-down batter Rasangika stabilised the innings and scored runs at a quick rate.

The duo forged a 117-run stand for the second wicket in 140 balls, before Mendis was caught by Gouher Sultana at mid-on off the bowling of Amita Sharma.

For India, former skipper Jhulan Goswami bagged three wickets for 63 runs in her 10 overs.

Rasangika, during here 151-minute stay at the crease, struck 11 fours. India tried to rein in the run rate even as Rasangika shared a 67-run partnership with skipper Siriwardene for the fourth wicket.

She was dismissed, when Raj ran backwards to take a catch at extra cover off Goswami.

The Sri Lankan skipper and Lokusooriya upped the ante adding 58 runs in 43 balls. Siriwardene, who scored 59 in 67 balls, was run out in the 47th over.

India will play Pakistan for the seventh position in Cuttack on Thursday.

Preview : Australia vs West Indies 3rd ODI, Canberra 2013 #AusvsWI

Preview : Australia vs West Indies 3rd ODI, Canberra 2013Before the start of the five-match series West Indian captain Darren Sammy spoke of how he believed his team could achieve a rare ODI trophy. Now, after two consecutive defeats, Sammy finds West Indies needing to win the third match in Canberra on Wednesday to keep the series alive.

The series began on a terrible note in Perth with West Indies rolled over for 74 en route to a nine-wicket pummeling. The tourists improved significantly on their batting effort in the second Perth fixture though they lost by 54 runs, with opener Kieran Powell (83) and Dwayne Bravo (45) showing some fight in their 126-run partnership. But on Sunday, once the Powell-Bravo stand was snapped West Indies lost their last seven wickets for 53 runs to be bowled out for 212 chasing 267. It’s easy to see where the problems lie.

The extended poor form of Chris Gayle and Darren Bravo, as well as two ducks on return to the side from Ramnaresh Sarwan, has left West Indies’ top order looking very shaky. Gayle made 4 in both matches in Perth to extend a lean run without an ODI fifty to ten matches – he averages 11.20 in this period – while Sarwan, back in the side after more than 18 months, has been taken out twice by Mitchell Starc’s left-arm swing without scoring. The younger Bravo too has struggled to occupy the crease against quality pace bowling and that has led to collapses of 39 for 7 and 33 for 3 in two games. The lack of big partnerships has let West Indies down hard.

The series is on the line in Canberra where the return of Shane Watson adds to West Indies’ problems.

Sarwan’s consecutive ducks could cost him his place in the XI, with left-hand batsman Narsingh Deonarine in line for his first ODI since June 2010. Kemar Roach has bled runs at 6.66 an over and has a bowling average of 80 in two matches, so he could be dropped for Tino Best or Andre Russell.

Two wins – contrasting in nature, incidentally – has put Australia one victory away from wrapping up the series. They will feel better about their chances of making the final two ODIs dead rubbers with the return of Shane Warne at the top of the order. With David Warner ruled out of the series with a left thumb injury, Watson will open the innings with Aaron Finch, meaning Usman Khawaja will drop out of the XI. Australia have added Ben Cutting to their squad but the 1.92meter fast bowler may not get a change to add a second cap to his name unless the series is sealed. With consecutive five-wicket hauls, 23-year-old Starc has drawn level with nine bowlers in ODI history and should he do it a third time he will become just the second bowler after Waqar Younis to achieve the rare feat.

That statistical highlight aside, there will be heightened focus on two other members of the Australian team after the events in Chennai on Sunday. Glenn Maxwell may have bagged a first-ball blob in the second ODI and been hit by Sunil Narine for four successive sixes, but a price tag of $1million from Mumbai Indians at the IPL auction has turned him into an overnight celebrity. His team-mates James Faulkner, rated highly in Australia as an allrounder, was purchased for $400,000 by Rajasthan Royals. After such valuations, both Maxwell and Faulkner will have plenty of eyes trained on their moves.

Wednesday’s fixture will be the third ODI to be played at the Manuka Oval – Zimbabwe and South Africa played here during the 1992 World Cup and Sri Lanka met India during the CB Series in 2008 – and it will be the first time Australia and West Indies play in the country’s capital. The tour match between the West Indians and the Prime Minister’s XI last week saw over 600 runs scored on the Manuka Oval pitch, so a run-filled contest looks on the cards.

Probable XIs
Australia: 1 Aaron Finch, 2 Shane Watson, 3 Phillip Hughes, 4 Michael Clarke (capt), 5 George Bailey, 6 Matthew Wade (wk), 7 Glenn Maxwell, 8 James Faulkner, 9 Mitchell Johnson, 10 Clint McKay, 11 Mitchell Starc

West Indies: 1 Chris Gayle, 2 Kieran Powell, 3 Ramnaresh Sarwan/Narsingh Deonarine, 4 Darren Bravo, 5 Dwayne Bravo, 6 Kieron Pollard, 7 Devon Thomas (wk), 8 Darren Sammy, 9 Jason Holder, 10 Sunil Narine, 11 Kemar Roach/Tino Best

Stuart Broad hat-trick helps England beat New Zealand XI in warm-up game #EngvsNZ

Stuart Broad hat-trick helps England beat New Zealand XI in warm-up gameStuart Broad claimed a hat-trick as he led England to a comfortable 46-run win over a New Zealand XI in the visitors’ first hit-out of their two-month tour.

England made an imposing total of 186 for three after losing the toss and being sent in to bat in the Twenty20 match, with Jos Buttler top-scoring on 57 not out and Eoin Morgan contributing an unbeaten 48.

Broad, the T20 captain for the tour then skittled the New Zealand tail, showing no sign of a heel injury that had sidelined him since November as he dismissed Andy Ellis, Ian Butler and Matt Henry in successive balls.

He was ably supported by Chris Woakes and Jade Dernbach, who each took three wickets apiece and maintained a steady stream of dismissals to prevent the New Zealanders building meaningful partnerships.

Woakes, a late call-up for the tour after Tim Bresnan was ruled with an elbow injury, seized his opportunity, bowling out New Zealand’s openers cheaply, while Dernbach removed Colin Munro as he looked threatening on 55.

Munro received little support as the required run rate climbed steadily higher and the New Zealanders’ resistance crumbled after his dismissal, allowing Broad to mop up.

The sides will play another warm-up at the same venue on Wednesday before the first T20 international in Auckland on Saturday.

Hashim Amla attains no. 1 spot for batsman in ICC Test Rankings #PakvsSA

Posted: 04 Feb 2013 10:30 PM PST

Hashim Amla attains no. 1 spot for batsman in ICC Test RankingsSouth African Hashim Amla on Monday became the first batsman since Ricky Ponting to head both Test and ODI rankings at the same time in the latest ICC charts.

Amla leads a number of South Africa players who continue to make impressive gains in the latest ICC Test Player Rankings.

South Africa players now head the ICC Test Player Rankings tables for batting, bowling and all-rounders after the side’s 211-run win over Pakistan in the first Test at Johannesburg today, which gave it a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Fast bowler Dale Steyn has broken the 900-rating points barrier for the second time in his career to retain his number one position in the ICC Player Rankings for Test bowlers, and Jacques Kallis still heads the ICC Player Rankings for Test all-rounders.

Steyn now has 908 ratings points, the best by a Test bowler since Muttiah Muralitharan reached the same rating in July 2008 against India. Steyn last broke the 900-ratings points barrier in November 2011 after the Cape Town Test against Australia. He now sits alongside ICC Cricket Hall of Famer Alan Davidson of Australia in 13th position on the Reliance ICC Best-Ever Test Championship Rating.

Amla has taken over the number-one position in the ICC Player Rankings for Test batsman for the first time in his career, after entering the Johannesburg Test trailing Australia captain Michael Clarke by just one ratings point.

He has moved to top spot after knocks of 37 and 74 not out, and now sits on 895 ratings points, which is his career-best rating.

Amla, who was short-listed for the ICC Cricketer of the Year Award in 2011 and 2012, now heads both the Test and ODI batting tables. He is the first man since former Australia captain Ponting in December 2007 to do so.

Amla, reacting to his number-one Test ranking, said, “I am surprised and happy with my position as the No.1 ranked Test batsman. However, I’m also mindful that rankings change quite regularly.

“It’s been a great year for our squad, and to be honest I still don’t think that I am the best batsman in our team. What has been most pleasing though for us has been the all-round contribution from everyone in the squad that has been the main reason for our success over the last few years.

“Needless to say, it is always easier to be at the top of your game and successful when you are part of a winning team.

Dale and Jacques have been tireless workhorses for the Proteas and continue to consistently put in quality performances for our team, it is no wonder that they are at the top of the bowling and all-rounder rankings.”

South Africa vice-captain AB de Villiers has achieved a career-best fourth position in the batting rankings after knocks of 31 and 103 not out, and Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq has broken into the top 10 for the first time in his career in 10th position (up by three).

Player of the match in the Johannesburg Test, Steyn, has broken the 900-rating points barrier for the second time in his career in the bowling rankings, thanks to spells of six for eight and five for 52.

Other bowlers to make upward movements are Jacques Kallis in 29th (up by four) and Mohammad Hafeez in 48th (up by eight).

Kallis continues to head the all-rounders’ list, but Hafeez has broken into the top 10 after jumping three places to 10th.

Shahid Afridi to lead Pakistan A against Afghanistan in limited over series

Posted: 04 Feb 2013 09:48 PM PST

Shahid Afridi to lead Pakistan A against Afghanistan in limited over seriesFormer Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi was on Monday named captain of the Pakistan A side against Afghanistan in a limited over series being held next week.

Afridi would lead not only the national A side but also of the combined Karachi/Sindh regional outfit that will play against the Afghans in Hyderabad on Wednesday.

Afridi, who has been yearning to get match practice before the limited over series in South Africa, also dropped the idea of playing in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy first class tournament because of the Afghanistan series.

“We have named a very strong Pakistan A side for the series because Afghanistan is a outfit that can’t be taken lightly at any time,” chief selector Iqbal Qasim said.

Besides Afridi the Pakistan ‘A’ ODI and T20 squads also include prominent players like Kamran Akmal, Umar Akmal, Ahmed Shahzad, Wahab Riaz, Fawad Alam, Zulfiqar Babar, Umar Amin, Ali Asad, Yasir Shah and Khurrum Manzoor besides some promising youngsters.

Interestingly, the selectors have ignored former captain Shoaib Malik for the series although he has been playing in the Quaid Trophy.

The Afghanistan team is in Lahore training at the National Cricket Academy and had requested a series against the Pakistan A side.

“For Afridi it will be a good work out and we want to give him confidence ahead of the one-day series in South Africa,” another selector said.

Afridi was in December dropped for the one-day series in India although he was picked for the two T20 matches played against the Indians.

There is a feeling that the series will be important for the likes of Afridi, Kamran, Umar and other discarded players to show their form.
