South Africa thrash Pakistan by 4 wickets in 2nd Test to clinch series 2-0 #PakvsSA

South Africa thrash Pakistan by 4 wickets in 2nd Test to clinch series 2-0South Africa reinforced their status as the world’s number one Test team when they beat Pakistan by four wickets on the fourth day of the second Test at Newlands on Sunday.

The victory, with a day to spare, gave South Africa a winning 2-0 lead in the three-match series. It came after a dramatic Pakistan collapse in their second innings.

Pakistan were bowled out for 169 after starting the day on a relatively comfortable 100 for three. They lost their last six wickets for 22 runs on either side of lunch. At one stage four wickets fell in 13 balls, including three off successive deliveries.

The collapse was engineered by left-arm spinner Robin Peterson and opening bowler Vernon Philander, who took three wickets each before Dale Steyn finished off the Pakistan innings.

Peterson finished with three for 73 and Philander took four for 40.

The result was a disappointment for Pakistan, who had seemed on top after two days before a strong fightback by South Africa’s lower order batsmen on Saturday.

Pakistan off-spinner Saeed Ajmal took four for 51 in South Africa’s run chase to finish with match figures of ten for 147.

Set to make 182 to win, South Africa lost Alviro Petersen ten runs into their chase, when he was leg before wicket to Umar Gul for one.

Captain Graeme Smith and Hashim Amla put on 53 for the second wicket before Smith was leg before to Saeed Ajmal for 29 shortly before tea.

Ajmal gained a second leg before decision when he dismissed Jacques Kallis for 21.

Amla and De Villiers shared a rapid 62-run partnership for the fourth wicket before both batsmen perished playing attacking shots. Faf du Plessis became Ajmal’s tenth victim of the match before Dean Elgar hit the winning run.

Pakistan made slow but solid progress at the start of the day, seeing off the threat of fast bowlers Philander and Dale Steyn.

But they had only added 14 runs in 8.2 overs to their overnight total of 100 for three when captain Misbah-ul-Haq top-edged a sweep against Peterson and was caught by Smith at short fine leg for 44.

Azhar Ali and Asad Shafiq added 33 for the fifth wicket before Shafiq was unlucky to see a defensive stroke against Philander bounce up and then back on to his stumps. The wicket fell five overs after the umpires called for a replacement ball after the original ball went out of shape.

Peterson bowled Sarfraz Ahmed, who padded up to a ball pitched outside leg stump, with the last ball of the next over. Philander then took wickets with the first two balls of the following over.

A long vigil by Azhar Ali ended when he edged an outswinger to wicketkeeper AB de Villiers. Ali made 65 off 193 balls with seven fours. Umar Gul edged the next ball and Alviro Petersen flung himself to his left at third slip to take a spectacular catch.

South Africa were without fast bowler Morne Morkel, who left the field with a hamstring injury on Saturday, but Peterson bowled accurately for all but two overs from the Kelvin Grove end, enabling Smith to use Philander and Steyn in short bursts.

Philander, who took five for 59 in the first innings, had match figures of nine for 99.

Peterson: ‘I am just pleased that we got over the line in a tense situation. We were under pressure but the coaching staff have been hammering me to play with a bit more intent. I am very happy to take the team over the line. We were missing Morne Morkel but someone in this team steps up to the plate and delivers. Ajmal is a real genius and I enjoy watching him bowl. He put us under pressure throughout. It has been a long journey (First MoM) and I would like to thank the crowd at Newlands. The boys will celebrate well as it has been a special match.’

Robin Peterson is the MoM for his all-round skills. He scored 84 and picked up 5/167 in the match.

Graeme Smith: ‘It was a tough Test. The conditions suited Pakistan and they looked at home in this match. The bowlers stepped up on day three and four. We would love to have wickets with pace and bounce. Ajmal is a wonderful bowler but I am glad with the way how we fought it out. It is an amazing feeling to win consistently. Peterson’s all-round efforts were memorable. We need to keep making the South African fans proud. Philander was outstanding and we were able to create pressure due to him. Morne Morkel has a strained hamstring and he will not play the third Test. I think when we were 5 down in the first innings, we looked to restrict the deficit. Peterson’s 84 was the key. It has been a special journey (100th Test as RSA skipper) and I hope that the crowd at Pretoria support us.’

Misbah-ul-Haq: ‘It was an improved performance. Asad Shafiq and Younis Khan batted well. They got us in the game. After taking seven wickets, the Peterson knock took the game away from us. The batting collapse cost us. 250 was a tricky score. The wicket was behaving well. Credit should be given to Peterson for the way he bowled. All the RSA bowlers bowled in the right areas and they did not allow us to score runs. Ajmal has bowled well in the last year and he has set up the games for us. Every Test is important for us and playing against a top-quality side is important. We have to come hard and put up a good show at Centurion.’

Brendon McCullum, injured Guptill help NZ seal thriller #EngvsNZ

Brendon McCullum, injured Guptill help NZ seal thrillerBrendon McCullum produced a match winning innings while a limping Martin Guptill returned after retiring hurt to guide New Zealand to a three-wicket victory over England in their first one-day international at Seddon Park on Sunday.

McCullum finished on 69 while Guptill, who retired hurt on three after he strained his left hamstring only to return when New Zealand were 218 for seven, was on 27 as the hosts scored 259-7 in 48.5 overs, having bowled England out for 258.

The 31-year-old McCullum had needed to provide the game-winning innings after he ran out Kane Williamson earlier when New Zealand appeared well placed for victory at 142-3 in the 34th over.

The dismissal came with Williamson on 74 and McCullum starting to look settled as the batting power play approached.

Williamson, who had been the most assured of New Zealand’s batsmen, guiding the ball around the ground with ease, was run out when McCullum called for a single, changed his mind and left his partner short of his ground at the non-striker’s end.

His departure produced a tighter-than-expected finish as New Zealand wickets fell regularly before McCullum seized the initiative and Guptill returned to flail away and give the hosts a 1-0 series lead.

England were dismissed for 258 in the final over of their innings after Ian Bell (64), Jonathan Trott (68) and Joe Root (56), provided a platform from which England could attack in the final overs but the visitors failed to capitalise on the small ground hosting the opener of the three-match series.

Trott’s dismissal at 184-3 in the 39th over actually sparked a dramatic loss of momentum as the visitors went on to lose their final six wickets for 38 runs in six overs.

Mitchell McClenaghan finished with figures of four for 56 from 9.4 overs but he picked up a side strain that his captain believes could rule him out for the remainder of the series.

James Franklin also bowled well for the hosts and returned figures of 3-38.

England vs New Zealand 1st ODI Post Match Hamilton 2013Alistair Cook: “We got off to an okay start, 260 was an okay score. I thought we did quite well, the way we bowled and defended the total. Credit to where New Zealand bowled, we lost 8 wickets in the last 15-16 overs. We didn’t capitalise in the Powerplay and credit to Brendon who took the game away from us. I thought all [of the full-time bowlers] bowled pretty well, we didn’t take all our catches though. We were surprised by the slow nature of the wicket.”

Brendon McCullum: “We enjoy playing here, today was really important. Nice to show those fighting characteristics to restrict them to 260 [after they were 158 for 2]. Kyle Mills has been an outstanding bowler for a number of years and his record shows that, he led the attack well. We hope Mitch [McClenaghan] will be fit soon. James is experienced and offers us a lot with the ball so good to see him stepping up. Kane played well until I ran him out! I apologised to him but I thought his intent was outstanding and he controlled the game nicely. [Guptill] was disappointed to pull up with the injury but it was pleasing for him to come back and hit the winning runs.”

Toss: New Zealand have won the toss and elected to field

McCullum: It will be a high scoring game. The small boundaries will be a factor. We are looking to restrict them and do well in the chase.

Cook: We would have bowled first too. There is a bit of grass. That’s what the history says. We played okay in India but we would like to get better. We have been consistent in the past couple of years in ODIs. Looking to do well in these conditions.

Teams
England (Playing XI): Alastair Cook(c), Ian Bell, Jonathan Trott, Joe Root, Eoin Morgan, Jos Buttler(w), Chris Woakes, Stuart Broad, Graeme Swann, James Anderson, Steven Finn
