South Africa with a 1-0 lead in the series will take on Pakistan in the 2nd test match of the series at Cape Town. The series has been hyped due to bowling strength of both the teams and we are into second test where the bowlers will be in spotlight again. Pakistan batting collapse in the first innings of last test was the major reason of Pakistan loss. South Africa pace trio Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel and Vernon Philander bowled exceptionally well to hold back Pakistan batsman. Pakistan will now be looking for win in the 2nd test to level the series. With the pressure on Pakistan team there will be some changes in the quad for sure. Mohammad Irfan who was dropped from 1st Test is likely to debut in the 2nd Test and will definitely provide some strength.

Pakistan’s batsmen face a big challenge when they take on South Africa’s in-form fast bowlers in the second Test starting at Newlands on Thursday.

After being bowled out for 49 on the way to a 211-run defeat in the first Test in Johannesburg, Pakistan will be up against Dale Steyn, Vernon Philander and Morne Morkel on the ground where Australia were bowled out for 47 last season and New Zealand for 45 last month.

Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq identified combating the new ball as the top priority for his team following the first Test.

The left-handed Imran Farhat, who played the most recent of his 39 Tests in August 2010, opened the batting in both innings in a two-day practice match against an Emerging Cape Cobras team which ended on Monday, but it is uncertain whether he will play in the Test.

Mohammad Hafeez failed twice in the first Test and did not bat in the practice match, while Nasir Jamshed, who showed promise as an opener in his first Test appearance, suffered an ankle injury in the field against the Cobras team and also did not bat, but is expected to be fit for the Test.

There was a boost for the tourists when Younis Khan, their most experienced batsman, ended a run of poor form with an unbeaten 74 in the second innings of the practice match.

Khan’s success gives added credence to Misbah’s claim that Pakistan’s middle order were capable of posting competitive totals, after Misbah and Asad Shafiq both hit half-centuries in the second innings in Johannesburg.

Injured Pakistan seamer Junaid Khan has been ruled out of the second cricket Test. “Junaid is definitely out of the second test but we hope to have him fit again for Centurion,” Whatmore told a news conference.

At least one change is expected in Pakistan’s bowling line-up, with the tall Mohammad Irfan favoured to replace Rahat Ali, who did not take a wicket in Johannesburg. Irfan had match figures of seven for 40 against the Cobras side.

South Africa, meanwhile, seem certain to retain the side that won in Johannesburg as they seek to clinch the three-match series on a ground where they have won 20 of 25 Tests since returning to international cricket in 1991.

They have been unbeaten at the ground in their most recent nine Tests, seven of which have been won.

South African captain Graeme Smith will captain his country for the 100th time after being feted for a century of captaincies in Johannesburg, with one of the matches having been for a World XI.

The match is being billed as a tribute to Mark Boucher, South Africa’s long-serving wicketkeeper, who was forced to retire after suffering an eye injury at the start of a tour of England last year. (AFP)

Turning track provided a good practice ahead of series : Ed Cowan #IndvsAus

Posted: 13 Feb 2013 12:15 AM PST

Turning track provided a good practice ahead of series Ed CowanBoard President’s XI spinners led by Parvez Rassol wreaked havoc as they bowled out Australia for a meagre 241 in the warm-up match on Tuesday, but Australia opener Ed Cowan feels the turning track has actually provided his team a good practice ahead of the upcoming Test series.

“It was fantastic that the wicket did turn. Because at the end of the day, we need to practice against the turning ball. It was almost as though the most dangerous shot was the forward defence. You had to find a way to get to the other end and get in a position to score runs,” said Cowan after the first day’s play of the two-day warm-up game.

“If you’re propped on the crease defending, then you’re playing into the spinners’ hands. I think the guys who scored runs found a way to actually hit the ball, rather than just defend. They were trying to put pressure on the bowlers. The guys would probably evaluate that their shots were on but the execution probably wasn’t as pure as they’d have liked.

“Usman tried to sweep and unfortunately, it didn’t come off for him. I played a few. You can’t sweep every ball, it becomes predictable. You got to know the line and length. I played a couple, Matthew Wade played the sweep pretty well. The top three played the sweep. It’s not a question of sweeping every ball, because then you could get into as much trouble as not sweeping the ball, I think,” he explained.

Heaping praise on young Jammu and Kashmir all-rounder Parvez Rassol, who ended with figures of seven for 45, Cowan said, “He bowled with good control, got some good turn. Anyone who can take seven wickets can obviously ball. He held it up nicely, he was excellent.”

Left-handed Cowan top-scored with 58 today but he did not think he sealed his spot as an opener in the Australian team.

“It didn’t feel like I needed to seal the deal. The talk is in the press and not in the changing room. From a personal point of view, I’ve been playing first-class for a long time. So just to get back in the mindset of being able to bat for a long time and to get the rhythm of batting, it was important.

“I was happy that I could not only spend time at the crease, but also have a positive time at the crease and get some runs at the end of the day,” he said.

Asked to compare the conditions here with that of Down Under, Cowan said, “It was obviously very different. The big thing today was there was significant reverse swing early, in 12th or 13th over. As an opening batsman, that’s something foreign, I guess. Then the slow turn increased through the day. It was good to spend some time in the middle.”

He added that reverse swing proved to be very good for the Aussies.

“Very good for us. Our guys know how to reverse the ball at good pace. The faster you ball, the harder the reverse swing is to play. I think that will play a part tomorrow.

Cowan said that the visitors were happy to have spend the entire day today, getting some good batting practice.

“At the end of the day, you can only bat for a 100 overs, 90 overs today. And we used up 86 or 87 of them. All the top three had more than 80 balls. Steve Smith had 100 balls. That’s a significant time in the middle. No one went on and got a big score, but that is probably the one issue. Everyone from 1 to 11 got to bat, and that’s important I think.”

Asked if Steven Smith has emerged as the front-runner for no. 4 spot in the Australian side, Cowan said, “I wouldn’t say he is the front-runner, but he is a batsman back home. He bats at No. 4 for his first-class team. He’s got a fantastic first-class record. The other guys are incredibly skilled batting allrounders who bowls fantastic medium-pace.

“And Maxwell is an offspinner, who bats particularly well. So Smith, that’s where he bats for his state. He wasn’t really promoted and I don’t think you could say he’s a front-runner.

“I’m not a selector, so I don’t know what the pecking order is at the moment. I think any time in the middle is a good time for anyone. Whether it is Smith or anyone else, the balance of the team will be a discussion for the captain and selectors leading in. Last Test, we didn’t play an allrounder, we played four fast bowlers. So who know what the balance is?,” he added.

Delhi Daredevils swap Ross Taylor for Ashish Nehra #IPL6

Posted: 12 Feb 2013 11:45 PM PST

Delhi Daredevils swap Ross Taylor for Ashish NehraPacer Ashish Nehra returns to the Delhi Daredevils squad for the sixth edition of the Indian Premier League as the franchise swapped him for Ross Taylor in the ongoing players trading window.

Ashish Nehra was part of the Daredevils squad in the 2009 and 2010, after playing the inaugural IPL season for Mumbai Indians. He was bought by Pune Warriors India in the 2011 auction, but missed the season due to injury.

“Ashish Nehra will constitute an integral part of our bowling attack in the 2013 season. We were the best team at the league stage in 2012, and with a player like him around, we are confident that we will go the distance,” TA Sekar, Head (Cricket), GMR Sports, said.

The Pune franchise will be Taylor’s fourth IPL team as he represented Royal Challengers Bangalore in the first three seasons, before playing a season each for Rajasthan Royals and Delhi Daredevils.

“We are elated to have a batsman like Ross Taylor in our ranks. He will add muscle, panache and of course, experience, to our middle order in the forthcoming season,” Sushanto Roy, Managing Director, Sahara Adventure Sports Ltd, said.

The only other player transfer to have taken place this season is that of T Suman from Mumbai Indians to Pune Warriors India.

India vs Australia : Shane Watson unlikely to open in tests against India #IndvsAus

Posted: 12 Feb 2013 11:15 PM PST

Shane Watson unlikely to open in tests against IndiaShane Watson is unlikely to open the batting for Australia in the four-match Test series in India despite his good form since making a comeback to the One-Day side.

Watson had scores of 122, 76 and 0 while opening the batting in the last three ODIs against the West Indies, but skipper Michael Clarke feels that it will have little impact when it comes to opening the batting in Test cricket, especially in the sub-continent.

“Watto scoring runs is a real positive for him to come back into the team. I don’t think it has any impact on him opening the batting in One-Day cricket. There’s no comparison to opening the batting in Test cricket, especially in the sub-continent,” Clarke told the Australian media before leaving for India on Tuesday.

With the retirement of Michael Hussey, Australia needs more experience in the middle-order and Watson, who has batted most of his career as an opening batsman, will remain at No.4.

Clarke was happy with the performance of his current Test opening pair David Warner and Ed Cowan.

“I think Ed and Davey Warner had a really good Australian summer and put their hand up against the number one Test team in the world. I think it’s a really positive sign that we’ve got so many options in our squad,” he said.

Clarke said that as an all-rounder Watson can walk into any team but now that he has given up bowling, things are different.

“Obviously Shane (Watson) needs to come back into the line-up somewhere. Like I’ve said though, it’s a lot different now that Watto’s not bowling. As an all-rounder I think he walks into any team. As a batsman there is a much bigger pool of players so we need to work out what our best batting line-up is that complements the team and we’ll go from there,” he said.

Marvan Atapattu, Chaminda Vaas appointed at Sri Lanka coach

Posted: 12 Feb 2013 10:51 PM PST

Marvan Atapattu, Chaminda Vaas appointed at Sri Lanka coachFormer Sri Lankan star players Marvan Atapattu and Chaminda Vaas have been named assistant coach and fast bowling coach in the latest shake up of Sri Lanka Cricket set up, SLC officials said on Tuesday.

Atapattu, 42, a former captain and opening batsman has been promoted to be the assistant coach from his current position of batting coach, senior SLC officials said. The move followed Monday’s appointment of Michael de Zoysa as the new team manager.

Atapattu would take up the job of assisting head coach Graham Ford from March 1.

The right-handed opening batsman who played 90 Tests and 268 ODIs for Sri Lanka had been serving as the batting coach since the end of the 2011 World Cup.

The position of assistant coach had been lying vacant since the Australian Stuart Law departed at the end of the England tour of May 2011.

SLC officials also said that former fast bowler Vaas has been contracted as the new fast bowling coach of the team. He would replace Champaka Ramanayake.

Vaas’ coaching skills came to the fore when he guided New Zealand fast bowlers with local knowledge in their last tour of Sri Lanka.

Ramanayake would be moved as the ‘A’ team’s fast bowling coach while his current deputy in the national team Anusha Samaranayake would be moved to take over the development squad’s fast bowling coach.

Analysts saw the move as a purging of Mahela Jayawardene regime in the Sri Lanka cricket set up.

Jayawardene has announced quitting as captain and his replacement is to be announced soon before the arrival of the Bangladesh team early next month.

Sri Lanka cricket is being subject to a thorough shake up with a view to improve its overall Test rankings. The team is currently placed at a lowly sixth.
