South Africa register 211 runs win over Pakistan in 1st Test #PakvsSA

South Africa register 211 runs win over Pakistan in 1st Test #PakvsSADale Steyn struck with the second new ball to secure a 211-run win for South Africa before lunch on the fourth day of the first Test against Pakistan at the Wanderers Stadium on Monday.

Steyn dismissed overnight batsmen Asad Shafiq and Misbah-ul-Haq inside his first three overs with the new ball to sweep away the last serious resistance by the tourists.

He also took the last two wickets to finish with five for 52 and match figures of 11 for 60.

Wicketkeeper AB de Villiers held five catches to add to the six he took in the first innings.

He equalled the world record set by Jack Russell for England against South Africa on the same ground in 1995/96.

He also became the first player in Test history to make a century and claim ten or more dismissals in a match after hitting an unbeaten 103 in the second innings.

Shafiq’s dismissal ended a stubborn fifth wicket stand of 127 with Misbah. The pair added 20 runs to the overnight total of 183 for four in the five overs that had to be bowled before the new ball could be taken.

Only another four runs were added before Steyn had Shafiq caught at second slip by Jacques Kallis for 56 in the third over with the new ball. Shafiq had faced 168 balls and hit nine fours

In his next over Steyn had Pakistan captain Misbah caught behind for 64, made off 167 balls with 11 boundaries.

Sarfraz Ahmed chopped a ball from Vernon Philander on to his stumps and Saeed Ajmal provided De Villiers with his tenth catch of the match when he gloved a lifting ball from Morne Morkel to the wicketkeeper.

There was some frustration for the bowlers as Umar Gul slogged his way to 23 and Morkel was denied a wicket after bowling Junaid Khan when a replay showed he had sent down a no-ball.

But Steyn had Gul caught behind and then trapped Junaid leg before wicket with the fourth ball of the last over before lunch.

The teams meet in the second game of a three-match series in Cape Town from February 14 to 18.

Steyn: ‘I bowled quite nicely but it was a great team performance. It came out sweetly and to pick up wickets was good. I’ve not been able to pick up wickets at the top in recent times but glad I did it here. We knew that if we could get through the partnership between Misbah and Shafiq, we could run through them. This morning the guys came out hard and finished the game. Things just clicked for me – the ball was coming out of my hands nicely. When you start thinking about too many things, it could go wrong. I just got the ball in my hand and bowled without thinking too much. The Pakistani dressing room congratulated me, it’s always nice to be appreciated by the opponents. I must say that they played well too, especially yesterday. It’s not easy to play in these conditions and they did well.’

Dale Steyn is the Man of the Match. Obviously!

Smith: ‘Superb way to celebrate the 100th Test as captain. There is always a bit of nervousness around these matches with some milestones but we did well. We knew that we wanted to bat first. We let outselves down a bit in the first innings, we needed 300 but 250 was good enough. Steyn has been a great performer for us, we’re lucky to have the number 1 bowler in the world in our side. Morne and Philander supported him well. AB de Villiers has silenced his critics with his keeping. He made a superb century as well, the intensity with which he played was terrific. We have to maintain our performances in the next two Tests as well. It has been an emotional week as well. I need some time to put in perspective the support from the team, family and fans. It has been an amazing week.’

Misbah: ‘The first innings hurt us badly. Steyn’s first spell made the difference in this Test match. Our bowlers did well to restrict them to 253 in the first innings. If we had at least equalled their score, this would have been a good Test match. We need to see off the new ball, like we did in the second innings. Our main concern is the batting. We have to get starts first and look to score more than 300 runs. South Africa is the number 1 side – they have top class bowlers and batsmen. We can learn a lot from them.’

Shane Warne slams Australia rotation policy

Shane Warne slams Australia rotation policySpin legend Shane Warne on Monday criticised Australia’s contentious use of the player rotation policy and called for changes to the one-day and Twenty20 formats.

Warne, 43, added his voice to other prominent ex-players and the media against the selection policy of rotating players, particularly fast bowlers, to guard against them breaking down from too much cricket.

“When we were number one there weren’t mission statements flying around, but we got the selection process right and the best 11 were selected for every game,” Warne said on his website.

“Example: Glenn McGrath didn’t want to be rotated or rested, he wanted to play every game, and we all did.

“It’s simple, select your best 11 for each form of the game, not the same 11 but your best available team at all times.”

Warne’s comments came in part two of his manifesto entitled “Where is Australian cricket at?”, which he started last week when he branded the people making decisions on the running of cricket in Australia as “muppets”.

The outspoken leg-spinner Monday also called for changes in the one-day and Twenty20 formats.

“We have changed the rules/laws too many times in this form (one-day) of the game, everyone is confused,” he said.

“It is time to deregulate one-day cricket. No restrictions with the field, none, place the fielders anywhere you want, this will create so many options and the attacking captains and teams will win.

“The only law should be that no bowler can bowl more than 10 overs.”

Warne also wants an increase in the maximum overs a bowler can deliver in T20 cricket to five from a current four.

“Increase the maximum per bowler to five overs not four, so four bowlers can bowl five overs and each ground should be as big as possible,” he said.

Australia, third in the Test and one-day rankings, lost their recent Twenty20 series against Sri Lanka after drawing the one-day series and beating the visitors in the Test series.

The Australians currently lead the West Indies two-nil in their five-match ODI series before heading off on a four-Test tour to India later this month.

Warne claimed 708 Test wickets in a celebrated career that also courted controversy, including a fine for taking money from a bookmaker. He was sent home from the 2003 World Cup for taking a banned diuretic.

Shane Watson returns to Australia ODI squad for West Indies seriesAll-rounder Shane Watson was Monday named in Australia’s squad for this week’s two one-day internationals against the West Indies following his recovery from a calf injury.

Watson will replace Usman Khawaja as Australia seek to wrap up the five-game series in Wednesday’s third ODI in Canberra after winning the opening two matches in Perth over the weekend.

“Shane Watson comes back into the squad for the series against West Indies as an opening batsman,” chairman of selectors John Inverarity said.

“Shane has recovered from his injury and we look forward to seeing him get back to his best.”

Australia defeated the West Indies by 54 runs in Perth on Sunday after routing the tourists for 70 on the way to a nine-wicket victory at the same venue on Friday.

The two teams also face each other in the fourth ODI in Sydney on Friday followed by the final match of the series in Melbourne on Sunday.

They play a Twenty20 match in Brisbane on February 13.

Australia – Michael Clarke (captain), George Bailey, Ben Cutting, Xavier Doherty, James Faulkner, Aaron Finch, Phillip Hughes, Mitchell Johnson, Glenn Maxwell, Clint McKay, Mitchell Starc, Matthew Wade, Shane Watson.
