Kolkata beat Delhi by 6 wickets in IPL 2013 opener #KKRvsDD #PepsiIPL

Kolkata beat Delhi by 6 wickets in IPL 2013 openerKolkata Knight Riders started their title defence on a confident note as they comfortably defeated Delhi Daredevils by six wickets in the opening encounter of the sixth edition of Indian Premier League here today.

A clinical bowling effort saw KKR restrict Daredevils to a modest 128 in 20 overs and then they chased down the runs with eight balls to spare on a Eden Gardens strip where batsmen found difficult to score freely.

Mystery spinner Sunil Narine with brilliant figures of 4/13 kept Daredevils under tight leash while skipper Gautam Gambhir`s useful 42 kept the defending champions` run-chase on track.

Jacques Kallis (23) and Manoj Tiwary (23) were involved small but useful partnerships as KKR always looked firm favourites to pull off the chase despite losing a few wickets towards the end.

Ashish Nehra gave an early breakthrough removing Manvinder Bisla (4) but skipper Gautam Gambhir and elder statesman Jacques Kallis added 47 runs for the second wicket before the South African legend was holed out in the deep as he failed to punish a rank long-hop from left-arm spinner Shahbaz Nadeem.

Gambhir was off the blocks as he first slashed Irfan Pathan over point for a boundary and then lofted the bowler over long-on for a six. Kallis`s straight push and a `Nataraja shot` off Nehra saw KKR score at a quick clip.

Once Kallis was gone, Gambhir-Tiwary duo added another 41 runs before a quicker one from Johan Botha caught the left-hander on the wrong-foot. Gambhir`s 42 came off 29 balls with five fours and a six.

Tiwary`s run-a-ball 23 came to an end when Nadeem (2/22) got his second wicket. Yusuf Pathan (18 no) and Eoin Morgan (14 no) completed the formalities with minimum fuss.

Earlier, KKR rode on Narine`s 4/13 to bundle out a depleted Delhi Daredevils for a none-too-impressive 128 with none of the batsmen save skipper Mahela Jayawardene able to make a substantial contribution.

Jayawardene came to Daredevils` rescue as his sensible knock of 66 off 52 balls helped them reach a total of 125 plus. Jayawardene hit eight fours and a six in his innings.

Everything went as per KKR skipper Gambhir`s plan after he won the toss and opted to field.

Brett Lee gave KKR the ideal start cleaning up Unmukt Chand (0) with the very first ball of the championship while Narine and Rajat Bhatia (2/23) with his military medium pacers, knocked the stuffing out of the opponents sharing six wickets between them.

The absence of big guns like Virender Sehwag and Kevin Pietersen really hurt the Daredevils cause as none other than Jayawardene and David Warner (21) could post a double-digit scores.

Only once could the Daredevils dominate the KKR attack when Jayawardene hit Lee for consecutive six and four in the penultimate over but only to be dismissed in the next ball as the innings was all but over for the visitors.

Lee brought the packed stadium come alive with an away-going delivery which saw Unmukt play to a wrong line.

Skipper Jayawardene, who was out of action due to a finger injury, then steadied the ship with a 44-run second wicket stand with Warner.

The duo played some intelligent cricket taking four in every over as they kept the run-rate above eight-run mark.

Mystery spinner Narine, who was instrumental in KKR`s last year triumph last season, came to haunt once again when he dismissed the dangerman Warner (21) as couldn`t negotiate the turn and bounce giving Kallis the easiest of catch at first slip.

The dismissal was enough to bring the run-rate down as Mahela waged a lone battle with wickets falling at the other end at regular intervals.

Sunil Narine: There was a little more turn and bounce on this pitch. I try to keep the ball in the air as much as possible. I am just enjoying the moment.

Sunil Narine is the Man of the Match. Gets the award from Deepika Padukone. Award indeed

Mahela Jayawardene: ‘When we started batting we realised that the wicket was slow. We were trying to get 140-150. Sunil bowled really well. Lot of positives from this game. Very happy with the bowling effort as well. It’s a different combination for Delhi this year. We will take time to get it right. We gave them a good fight. Will try to improve on the mistakes.’

Gautam Gambhir: ‘ We have got one on the board straight away after 2 years. Fantastic effort from the bowlers. We are a very good fielding side. It’s a good thing for the captain to start well. Balaji did a brilliant job, so did Binga. We wanted to be positive while chasing 128. Points on the table is always satisfying.’

Gambhir: ‘The weather is pleasent and the track looks good. The Kolkata crowd have been very loyal and they have turned up in good numbers. We are going to bowl. We do not know what a good total will be on this track. It is a different track to last year. Some of the guys have been playing international cricket and I hope that they carry the form ahead. There is hardly any dew. The four foreign players are Brett Lee, Kallis, Morgan and Narine.’

Mahela Jayawardene: ‘It is a good opportunity for the other guys in the team. Sehwag is not fit but we have depth in the squad. We had a great campaign last year and we have to work on that. I missed some cricket due to injury but it is good to come back. It is a great opportunity for some of the guys. I was going to bat first since it is the first game and we want to put the runs on the board. I have been here for two weeks and we have gelled together. Warner, myself, Botha and Andre Russell are the four overseas players.’

Mumbai Indians vs Royal Challengers Bangalore – Match 2 – Preview – IPL 2013 #MI #RCB

Posted: 03 Apr 2013 04:27 AM PDT

Bangalore: Two teams that have shown the promise but failed to deliver on big occasions come face to face when Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore clash in their opening match of the Indian Premier League here on Thursday.

Mumbai Indians vs Royal Challengers Bangalore Preview IPL 2013

The Mumbai Indians are the big-spending side and have the Champions League Twenty20 Trophy to show for all the money shelled out on acquiring star players. Besides, Mumbai have also been runners-up once and semifinalists twice in the previous IPL seasons.

With Ricky Ponting as captain this time, Mumbai would be hoping to lay their hands on the IPL trophy for the first time.

In the batting department, Ambati Rayudu and Rohit Sharma would be looking to continue from where he left in the previous IPL where they amassed 333 and 433 runs respectively.

Senior batsman Sachin Tendulkar would open with either Dwayne Smith or James Franklin, both of whom can contribute to the team with their bowling as well.

Also Ponting, who has had a good outing in Australia`s Big Bash and Shield Cricket tournaments since retiring from Test cricket, would be an asset at number three.

Dinesh Karthik would give solidity to the middle-order.

Boasting of three prolific wicket-takers in the IPL so far — Sri Lankan Lasith Malinga, Pragyan Ojha and Munaf Patel — Mumbai Indians look a well-balanced side.

However, spinners were a tad disappointing for them in IPL-5 with Harbhajan Singh hardly making any impact. He scalped six wickets in 17 matches, while Ojha claimed nine wickets in as many matches.

Mumbai, in fact, are rocked by a problem of plenty as only four international cricketers are allowed to play in a match. There is lot to choose from the international basket given the presence of “million -dollar buy” Glen Maxwell, Dwayne Smith, Kieron Pollard, Jacob Oram, James Franklin and Malinga.

RCB, on the other hand, will take the field with the young and feisty Virat Kohli leading the team.

Known for being diffident in the initial stages of the IPL, RCB have, in their arsenal, swashbuckling characters like Chris Gayle, Tillakaratne Dilshan and A B de Villiers, who can turn the game on its head in a jiffy.

Kohli is not too far behind having been RCB`s leading run-getter (1639), but their over-dependence on Gayle has been a nightmare for the team.

The West Indian, with 1341 runs, has won countless games single-handedly, but still has to come up good in big matches.

RCB`s main worry is their bowling with Zaheer Khan making a comeback from a calf injury which he sustained in a Ranji Trophy match against Gujarat last year.

Abhimanyu Mithun and R Vinay will be waiting to give better performance.

Caribbean speedster Ravi Rampaul along with senior pros like Muttiah Muralitharan, Daniel Vettori and Murali Karthik, are expected to bolster RCB attack.

Squads:

Royal Challengers Bangalore (Probable): Virat Kohli (c), Chris Gayle, Tillakaratne Dilshan, AB de Villiers (wk), Saurabh Tiwary, Mayank Agarwal, Moises Henriques, Murali Karthik, Zaheer Khan, R Vinay Kumar, RP Singh.

Mumbai Indians (Probable): Ricky Ponting (c), Sachin Tendulkar, Rohit Sharma, Ambati Rayudu, Dinesh Karthik (wk), Kieron Pollard, Glenn Maxwell, Harbhajan Singh, Lasith Malinga, Munaf Patel, Dhawal Kulkarni.

Younis Khan career not yet over, says chief selector Iqbal Qasim

Posted: 03 Apr 2013 02:00 AM PDT

Younis Khan career not yet over says Iqbal QasimPakistan’s chief selector Iqbal Qasim has said that veteran Younis Khan’s career is not yet over, even though he has been omitted from the country’s 30-man initial squad for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy to be played in England.

Khan, who has not managed to score a century since November 2008, was left out after his lackluster performance during the recent one day international series in South Africa, which Pakistan lost 3-2.

Khan managed to score only 116 runs in the series, the Dawn reports.

Qasim said that Khan was not picked for the Champions Trophy squad in view of his current form, adding that that does not mean that he has been sidelined from the team forever.

Stating that cutting short a player’s career is not the mandate of the selection committee, Qasim further said that a player who performs well is considered for selection, adding that Khan is no exception.

Qasim said the initial squad announced was balanced, adding that the upcoming domestic tournament will help decide the final 15-man squad which is supposed to be announced in May.

Pakistan, which is in group B along with arch-rivals India, West Indies and South Africa, of the event to be held in England from June 3-23, will face the West Indies in their opening match on June 7 before clashing with South Africa (June 10) and arch-rivals India on June 15, the report added. Mitchell Starc bags million-dollar contract, Cricket Australia announce list of contracted players

Posted: 03 Apr 2013 01:30 AM PDT

Mitchell Starc bags million-dollar contractCricket Australia unveiled a list of 20 contracted players for the new season amid reports that star bowler Mitchell Starc is celebrating a million-dollar pay-day.

With the retirements of former skipper Ricky Ponting and stalwart Michael Hussey, funds were freed up for a changing of the guard in the lucrative 2013-14 roster.

Sydney’s Daily Telegraph said Starc was the big winner when the National Selection Panel (NSP) made its pick.

The 23-year-old left-armer broke onto the scale last season with a base deal reportedly worth Aus$230,000 (US$240,000) a year.

His match-winning efforts saw him surge up the elite rankings alongside captain Michael Clarke and into the seven-figure pay bracket, the newspaper said.

Starc was one of the few Australians to stand out in all three forms of the game meaning he scored highly on the complex formula used to rank top players.

National selector John Inverarity suggested the door was still open to some big names who did not make the list.

“Jackson Bird, Moises Henriques, Usman Khawaja and Steven Smith were all very close to making this contract list and we expect them to take opportunities that are presented across formats to represent Australia and make a case for an upgrade to a CA contract, as the year unfolds,” he said.

“Aaron Finch hasn’t made the contract list on this occasion but the NSP hopes he will make a case for future inclusion through his performances.”

Last year 17 players were initially given contracts and an additional nine players were upgraded to contracts during the season.

Contract list: George Bailey, Michael Clarke, Ed Cowan, Patrick Cummins, Xavier Doherty, James Faulkner, Brad Haddin, Ryan Harris, Ben Hilfenhaus, Phillip Hughes, Mitchell Johnson, Nathan Lyon, Glenn Maxwell, Clint McKay, James Pattinson, Peter Siddle, Mitchell Starc, Matthew Wade, David Warner, Shane Watson.

IPL 2013 : Chris Gayle, Tillakaratne Dilshan undergo first training session #PepsiIPL #RCB

Posted: 03 Apr 2013 01:00 AM PDT

Chris Gayle, Tillakaratne Dilshan undergo first training sessionExplosive Jamaican Chris Gayle and Sri Lankan dasher Tillakaratne Dilshan today batted under lights for half an hour at the Royal Challengers Bangalore’s net practice ahead of their encounter with Mumbai Indians on April 4 at Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Gayle and Dilshan had their first net session for RCB after they had arrived late last night. Both of them batted with the same vigour as they normally do out in the middle; they spanked the bowlers mercilessly.

Former captain Daniel Vettori, who is coming into the team after recovering from an injury, also rolled his arms over. The Kiwi looked relaxed and fit, unlike Zaheer Khan who is also recovering from a calf-muscle injury and was absent from the session.

Zaheer had sustained an injury during Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy game against Gujarat last December and was then dropped from the Indian Test squad against England.

In the afternoon, Mumbai Indians practiced in the stadium with Kieron Pollard and Dwanye Smith taking guard at the nets to bat. Sachin Tendulkar, Ambati Rayudu and Rohit Sharma also batted.

Prior to getting some batting practice, Mumbai Indian players concentrated on fielding under the watchful eyes of South African great Jonty Rhodes.

Jaydev Unadkat, Harbhajan Singh and Pragyan Ojha bowled to almost all the top Mumbai Indians batsmen.

IPL 2013 : Sehwag ruled out of opening game against Kolkata #IPL6

Posted: 03 Apr 2013 12:30 AM PDT

Sehwag ruled out of opening game against KolkataDelhi Daredevils today suffered another jolt as star opener Virender Sehwag, who is down with a back spasm, was ruled out of their IPL 6 opener against Kolkata Knight Riders here tomorrow.

“He is having back spasm. His doctors advised him to take rest an not to join the side in Kolkata,” a team official told PTI.

The team will also miss last season’s Purple Cap holder Morne Morkel (25 wickets), who bowled Titans to a semifinal place in the Ram Slam T20 Challenge in the South Africa domestic cricket.

“They are playing semis tomorrow and if they make [the] final [on April 7], we may miss him for another game,” coach Eric Simons said.

The Daredevils already have injury setback as England batsman Kevin Pietersen has been ruled out for the entire IPl season owing to a knee injury.

They will also not have the services of big hitting New Zealander Jesse Ryder who was badly injured following a brutal assault at a Christchurch bar.
