Keiron Pollard all-round show helps Mumbai beat Chennai by 9 runs – IPL 2013 #CSKvsMI #CSK #MI

Keiron Pollard all-round show helps Mumbai beat Chennai by 9 runs - IPL 2013Mumbai Indians defeated the formidable Chennai Super Kings in their own backyard for their first win in the Indian Premier League on Saturday.

The visitors pulled off a stunning win after Chennai fell short of their 148 for six by nine runs. Kieron Pollard starred for Mumbai by smashing 57 off 38 balls and led their recovery from 83 for six in 12 overs.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni took his team`s fight to the last over with an exhilarating 51 off 26 balls. But his dismissal in the first ball of the 20th over resulted in Chennai`s loss in what was their first match of the tournament. It was a welcome result for Mumbai, who had lost a close contest against Royal Challengers Bangalore on Thursday.

Chennai stumbled in the chase, losing half of their side for 66. But with dangerous Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja in the middle, you could still not rule out the hosts getting the required 83 runs off 47 balls.

With Jadeja back in the hut on 16, the onus was once again on Dhoni to take the team home. The skipper hit an array of vicious blows to take the match down to the wire. Chennai needed 23 off the last 12 balls after Pollard bowled a 17-run over.

Mitchell Johnson came to bowl the 19th over and Dhoni did not spare him too. He brought his fifty with a cracking six over deep mid wicket, cutting the target to six off the final over with two wickets in hand.

With Dhoni in full flow, it seemed the massive crowd in attendance for the opening IPL game here would get their money`s worth. All of that changed one when Pollard pulled off a stunning catch at the boundary to dismiss Dhoni.

Earlier, Mumbai Indians were off to a bad start after winning the toss, losing the `dream` opening combination of Sachin Tendulkar and Ricky Ponting (6) for 17.

The master blaster was adjudged leg before wicket off pacer Dirk Nannes on the first ball he faced. Apparently, he was not happy with the umpire`s decision.

The ball was doing a bit and Dhoni used his faster bowlers for the first nine overs. The ploy paid off as wickets kept on falling at regular intervals.

Besides Pollard`s power hitting, the innings also saw Dinesh Karthik (37) continuing with the form he displayed in Bangalore on Thursday. The wicket-keeper looked set for his second fifty in a row before he fell to Dwayne Bravo, making it 59 for four.

Two more got out quickly leaving Pollard and Harbhajan Singh in the middle.

The West Indian expectedly scored the bulk of the runs in their 65-run stand, made exciting with his five sixes and four boundaries. Harbhajan played his part well by scoring run a ball 21.

Pollard: ‘I’m feeling releived after that over I bowled to Dhoni. I wanted to contribute in all departments. I knew if I dropped that catch, I dropped the match. I don’t want to be over-confident and drop a catch at a crucial moment. I’m working hard on my fielding. I’m not a finished product as a batsman yet. I’m still learning. I just do what the team requires at the moment. I backed myself to hit the spinners and see how it goes in the end.’

Kieron Pollard is the Man of the Match for his superb knock of 57.

Ponting: ‘I’m very happy. It’s always nice to be on the winning end. We wanted to be aggressive at the top of the order. Kieron’s innings was fantastic and so was his partnership with Harbhajan. The outfield was lush, far more than other places in India. That made a difference. There were few nervous moments towards the end. Our bowlers did a good job throughout.’

Dhoni: ‘I think the shot selection was bad. the bowlers did a very good job considering the dew. We all knew that it would be difficult if Pollard was there till the end. If we had kept wickets till the end, it would have been a different story. At one point I was not able to rotate the strike. We are slow starters. There are a lot of new bowlers. I’ve just left it to them for now. There will be more strategy as we go forward. 150 on this pitch should have been chased. I think it’s a very good wicket as of now. As the tournament progresses, it will slow down.’

Rahul Dravid, Kevon Cooper clinches thrilling victory for Rajasthan Royals – IPL 2013 #DDvsRR

Posted: 06 Apr 2013 08:55 AM PDT

Rahul Dravid, Kevon Cooper clinches thrilling victory for Rajasthan Royals - IPL 2013Kevon Cooper bowled a brilliant final over to guide Rajasthan Royals to a five-run victory over Delhi Daredevils in a thrilling Pepsi IPL league encounter on Saturday.

Chasing a victory target of 166, Delhi batsmen failed to get 17 runs off the final two overs to finish at 160 for six at the Feroze Shah Kotla.

David Warner`s smashing innings of 77 runs went in vain as the home team lost their second match in a row, having been beaten by Kolkata Knight Riders in their tournament opener.

Needing nine runs from the final over, Cooper bowled a tight line conceding only three runs as Delhi lost the wicket of Andre Russell and Johan Botha.

A six off the final delivery was all that Delhi required but Cooper kept it fuller as Naman Ojha failed to connect the ball.

The match, which seemed to have slipped out of the hands of the Royals, was turned on its head by Australian Brad Hodge whose brilliant piece of fielding led to the dismissal of Warner.

Warner, who till then looked like anchoring the Daredevils chase to perfection, was run-out in the penultimate over as he failed to beat a direct throw from Hodge who was manning the cover region. Such was the effect of that dismissal that Daredevils completely lost the plot during the final nine deliveries of the match.

Warner hit nine fours and a big six off Siddharth Trivedi in his 56-ball knock. He shared an important 67-run third wicket partnership with young Manprit Juneja (20) as the home team did not look like facing any major hiccups in the chase.

But, when it mattered the most, unheralded Rahul Shukla and Cooper did simple things admirably well to help their team start off on a winning note.

Warner got off to a sluggish start, taking 12 deliveries for his first four runs, but as the innings progressed he opened up to play some smashing shots. He got a couple of reprieves on individual scores of three and 57 as Rahul Dravid and Rahul Shukla dropped him.

Delhi started their run chase cautiously as Warner shared an opening stand of 39 with promising opener Unmukt Chand (23 off 34 deliveries). Mahela Jayawardene (19) got out cheaply, as Ajinkya Rahane pulled off a stunner, at point to dismiss the Delhi batting mainstay, off the bowling of pacer Rahul Shukla.

For Rajasthan, Cooper returned with figures of three for 30 in his four overs while S Sresanth (1/18) and Rahul Shukla (1/27) got one wicket each.

Earlier, the Royals rode on skipper Rahul Dravid’s half century to post 165 for seven after opting to bat on a flat Kotla track.

Dravid (65) was ably supported by all-rounder Stuart Binny (40) with whom he stitched a 55-run partnership in just 4.4 overs to take the Royals to 165 for seven.

Dravid’s knock came off just 51 deliveries smashing six fours and two sixes while Binny took just 20 balls for his thrilling cameo as he played some breathtaking shots during his stay at the crease. He hit three sixes and two boundaries before being castled by Umesh Yadav.

Rajasthan were looking set for a bigger total but their march was halted by Delhi quicks Yadav and Ashish Nehra, who bowled well at the death giving away just six runs in the final two overs of the innings.

Yadav took four wickets in as many overs giving away just 24 runs, while Nehra picked two scalps to dent the Royals surge. They visitors lost four wickets in the space of eight deliveries with the addition of only four runs.

Making his debut in the IPL, Sri Lankan wicketkeeper Kusal Perera (14) came out to bat with an attacking intent and smashed the second ball of the innings for a boundary. He was though handed a life by Johan Botha when he was dropped for five in the slips but failed to make the hosts pay.
At the other end, Rahane’s first run came off an exquisite on drive to the mid-wicket fence as he got off to a cautious start. In his brief 28-run knock, Rahane gave a glimpse of his last year’s form when he hit Andre Russell first over his head, followed by a deft touch to the third-man boundary, in two successive deliveries.

Rahane was dismissed by left-arm spinner Shabaaz Nadeem, before adding 65 runs for the second wicket along with Dravid.

Australian Brad Hodge (5) and West Indian all-rounder Kevon Cooper (2) failed to make an impact as they perished in pursuit of quick runs.

Dravid: ‘Everything went off well for me today, got a bit of luck as well. We lost last year, nice to get one back. I have done a lot of practise, my preparation was pretty spot on. Very proud of the guys, it was a mixed performance, we are a young side and go into every match as the underdogs.’

Dravid is the MoM for his fine 65

Jayawardene: ‘We paced our chase pretty well, except for the last 10 balls. They kept their nerves, we did not. They fielded much better then us. Umesh bowled pretty well after coming back from an injury. We can hopefully turn it around and get back with a victory.’

MSD: ‘I’m good. I miss being your butler. Very good feeling so far. We’re missing a few players. Albie Morkel and Morris are not here. Hilfenhaus is not here for the game. We were lookig to bowl first. There could be some dew later on. I don’t believe in surprises.’

Delhi Daredevils vs Rajasthan Royals Live Streams IPL 2013

Depleted Delhi after loosing the first match against defending Champions Kolkata will be looking for win against the Rajasthan Royals at the home ground . Delhi has been facing too many injury issues with Kevin Pietersen and Jesse Ryder already ruled out and Virender Sehwag still not fit for the second game the pressure is already started to build up on Daredevils. Jaywardene and Warner did gave Delhi a good start in the first match but its the middle order which is not giving enough support. The experiment of playing Manprit Juneja in place of the experienced Venugopal Rao didn’t work out and Delhi should think of undoing that in this match. Delhi bowling in absence of Morne Morkel looks balanced with three seamers Ashish Nehra, Irfan Pathan and Umesh Yadav. Coming onto Rajasthan Royals, they haven’t been able to make it big since the first IPL season in 2008. Rahul Dravid will be leading the side and will most probably be opening the innings with Ajinkya Rahane. Rahane had impressive last season putting up 560 runs which also included a century from 16 matches. Royals have signed up Fidel Edwards for this season. He will be joined by Shaun Tait, fit-again Sreesanth and Sidharth Trivedi. Delhi has won 6 out of the 10 games played against Royals but can they do it this time?

IPL 2013 : Sunrisers Hyderabad beat Pune Warriors in a low scorie tie #SRHvsPWI

Posted: 05 Apr 2013 01:01 PM PDT

Sunrisers Hyderabad beat Pune Warriors in a low scorie tie - IPL 2013Tearaway pacer Dale Steyn grabbed three wickets in a sensational over as Sunrisers Hyderabad spanked Pune Warriors by 22 runs in a low-scoring Pepsi IPL match on Friday.

Playing in their first match of the IPL under a new name, the Sunrisers defended a small total of 126 for six with their bowlers producing a disciplined show to bundle out the Warriors for 104 in 18.5 overs at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium.

Steyn dismissed tailenders Bhuvneshwar Kumar (3), Rahul Sharma (0) and Ashok Dinda (0) in the space of four balls in the 19th over to end the Warriors` innings. The South African fast bowler conceded just 11 runs in his 3.5 overs.

Leg-spinner Amit Mishra also claimed three wickets for 19 runs from his four overs, while Thisara Perera took two for 29 runs.

The Warriors batsmen fell in quick succession after their openers Robin Uthappa (24) and Manish Pandey (15) raised 36 runs from 41 balls. From 36 for one in the seventh over, they were reduced to 50 for four in the 12th over and they lost the plot from there.

Uthappa`s was the highest score for Warriors while Yuvraj Singh could contribute just two runs.

Chasing a small target, the Warriors made a slow start as they struggled to score against the pace of Steyn and Ishant Sharma.

The Warriors were 18 for no loss at the end of the fifth over before Uthappa decided to take on the Sunrisers bowlers. He first hit Ishant for a six in sixth over before clobbering Perera for three fours on the trot in the next over.

But the Sri Lankan bowler had the last laugh as he had the batsman in the penultimate ball of the same over to reduce the Warriors to 36 for one in the seventh over.

Two overs later, Perera scalped his second wicket in the form of Marlon Samuels (5) as the batsman gave a simple catch to Cameron White.

The Warriors were dealt a severe blow as they lost the wicket of Yuvraj eight balls after the bowling of Amit Mishra. Yuvraj charged down the wicket, but the flat delivery of Mishra turned down the leg side leaving past the batsman and Parthiv took the bails off in a jiffy. When Yuvraj departed, the Warriors were 47 for three in the 10th over, needing 80 runs from the 10 overs remaining.

As if competing to return to the dressing room, Pandey fell two overs later – 12th – caught by White after a Mishra delivery got the thick edge of the bat.

Abhishek Nayar (19) perished in the 16th over while trying to accelerate the chase and New Zealander Ross Taylor (19) followed him at the dressing room in the next over. Mitchell Marsh was out five balls after Taylor and it was all over for the Warriors.

Earlier, Sunrisers Hyderabad failed to impress with their batting as they could score just 126 for six.

Put into bat, Sunrisers made a steady start but later lost wickets at a regular interval to post a small total. They failed to stitch any substantial partnership, the highest being the opening stand of 34 from 32 balls between Parthiv Patel (19) and Akshath Reddy (27).

Sri Lankan Thisara Perera top-scored with a 18-ball 30 which he made with the help of three fours and a six while Akshath Reddy was the other notable contributor.

Warriors` bowlers put up a disciplined effort to deny the home side easy runs. Pacer Ashok Dinda was the pick of bowlers with two wickets for 29 runs. Four other bowlers – Rahul Sharma, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Marlon Samuels and Yuvraj Singh – took a wicket each.

Sunrisers made a steady start with Parthiv and Akshath Reddy raising 34 runs for the opening wicket before the former was dismissed by Dinda, clean-bowled for 19 in the sixth over.

Pune, who opened bowling with off-spinner Marlon Samuels, then tightened the grip by removing Sunrisers captain Kumar Sangakkara (15) in the 10th over with leg-spinner Rahul Sharma taking the wicket with a gem of a ball.

Sangakkara was beaten in the flight and as he charged out for a big hit, the tossed-up delivery went past his bat before hitting the middle stump.

The home side skipper hit two fours in his 16-ball knock and Sunrisers were 60 for two when Sangakkara was out and with half their innings over.

Yuvraj played his part with his left-arm spin as he clean-bowled opener Akshath Reddy with a quicker delivery as Sunrisers were reduced to 72 for three in the 13th over.

Sunrisers struggled for runs as they were 87 for four at the end of the 15th over. The home side tried their best to get maximum runs in the last five overs, but could add just 39 with Perera scoring most of the runs
