Rajasthan Royals beat defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders by 19 runs – IPL 2013 #RRvsKKR

Rajasthan Royals beat defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders by 19 runs - IPL 2013Rajasthan Royals maintained their impeccable `home record` against Kolkata Knight Riders outclassing the defending champions by 19 runs to register their second successive victory in the Pepsi Indian Premier League, here on Monday.

Defending a a total of 144, the Royals` pace attack performed as a unit to bowl out KKR for 125 in 19 overs.

Only Eoin Morgan tried his best with a gutsy 51 off 38 balls (3×4, 3×6) but didn`t get support from the other end.

Royals` ploy of playing on a seaming track at the Sawai Mann Singh worked wonderfully well as veteran domestic workhorse Siddharth Trivedi (3/23) and young unheralded Jharkhand boy Rahul Shukla (2/28) ran through the top-half of the opposition to pave the way for an easy victory.

Kevon Cooper, then, bowled brilliantly at the death to polish off the tail with figures of 3/15.

Gambhir attacked Sreesanth straightaway as he hit the Kerala pacer for a boundary and a huge six over deep square leg to get 14 runs from the opening over.

Shukla surprised one and all as he worked up a lively pace in the mid 140 kmp to knock back Manvinder Bisla`s (1) stumps and then got one to kick up from short of length as Jacques Kallis (0) helpless edged one to Dishant Yagnik.

Manoj Tiwary (14) was trapped leg before off Trivedi`s very first over as KKR were reduced to 40 for three.

But when Gautam Gambhir (22) was also snuffed out by Trivedi with glovesman Yagnik pulling off an acrobatic catch, the writing seemed to be on the wall.

Yusuf Pathan`s terrible run in KKR shirt continued as he gave catching practice to Yagnik, who got his third catch off Kevon Cooper`s delivery. The half of the team was back in the hut with the score less than 50.

Trivedi`s dream night continued as Laxmi Ratan Shukla was holed out in the deep and the chase seemed to hit dead end.

Earlier, Brad Hodge used all his experience in the shortest format to good effect as he propelled Rajasthan Royals to a decent 144 for six.

Hodge smashed 46 off 31 balls with seven boundaries as Royals got 38 runs in the last three overs after KKR bowlers had maintained discipline for the better part of the 17 overs.

Ajinkya Rahane’s 36 (3×4, 1×6) was the only other significant contribution as Sunil Narine had the best figures of two for 28 in four overs.

Narine’s figures were somewhat damaged by Hodge and left-handed keeper-batsman Yagnik (16) who clobbed him for 18 runs in the penultimate over.

Shane Watson (5)’s arrival was much anticipated in the Royals’ ranks but it lasted a mere 10 balls as he uppishly drove Brett Lee only to be caught by Eoin Morgan in the extra cover region. This was after having lofted the previous delivery over the mid-off fielder for a boundary.

Rahane got into the double figures with back-to-back boundaries in Shami Ahmed’s next over with a cover drive and a steer towards third-man boundary. With skipper Dravid for company, the duo added 35 runs for the second wicket and looked like consolidating the innings.

However KKR’s ‘Go-To’ Man for the past couple of seasons Rajat Bhatia got the important wicket of Dravid (17) with an innocuous delivery. The Delhi veteran bowled one that pitched on length and came straight but Dravid tried to play across the line to find the stumps rattled.

It seemed Stuart Binny (14, 3×4) started from where he left against Delhi Daredevils but Shukla angled one into the right-hander to trap him leg before.

Rahane and Brad Hodge took the score past 100 and the young Mumbaikar hit a breathtaking six over extra cover off Shami Ahmed’s bowling.

Just when Rahane looked like getting set for a big knock, KKR’s ‘Mystery Man’ struck twin blow. First he got a straighter one, which Rahane edged to Bisla behind the stumps. Rahane faced 34 balls for his 36. A ball later, Narine removed Kevon Cooper for a duck as Bisla pulled off a smart stumping to reduce Royals to 102 for five.

Rajasthan Royals vs Kolkata Knight Riders Post Match Presentation – IPL 2013 #RRvsKKR #RR #KKR

Trivedi: The ball was seaming a bit and there was pace off the surface. Rahul and the team management guided me on how to bowl. I enjoyed bowling on this surface, we enjoyed the pace and bounce off the wicket. Bowling with Tait was an unique experience. Feels like home bowling on this ground.’

Siddarth Trivedi is the MoM

Dravid: ‘Great way to start the tournament, nice way to get going. We were a bit below par with our batting, but the bowlers did very well. The partnership between Hodge and Yagnik was vital, and to get 5 wickets in the first 9 overs was great. Getting the wicket of Gambhir was the turning point in the match. We wanted to bombard them with pace and it worked for us.’

Gambhir: ‘We just kept losing wickets at the wrong time. We should have chased this one down, the track was very good. We played some very bad shots. Hopefully, we will not repeat the mistakes in the rest of the tournament. We have got a lot of quality in our bowling. We will hope to do well in Bangalore in our next match.’

Mumbai Indians vs Delhi Daredevils – Preview – IPL 2013 #MIvsDD #MI #DD

Posted: 08 Apr 2013 06:15 AM PDT

On a high after beating two-time champions Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians would look to keep the momentum going when they lock horns with a jittery Delhi Daredevils in their Indian Premier League match on Tuesday.

Mumbai Indians vs Delhi Daredevils Preview IPL 2013

The Ricky Ponting-led side shrugged off the two-run loss to Royal Challengers Bangalore in their opening match to snatch a nine-run win against the Chennai team.

While Mumbai Indians have the all-round ability to test any side, they have been patchy in their batting so far.

Against Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai lost the opening pair of Sachin Tendulkar and Ponting inside the first 20 balls with the former getting a first ball duck.

Mumbai would expect the duo to display some of their renowned strokeplay in the first home match after missing out in Chennai.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik will look to continue his good form along with big-hitting West Indian all-rounder Kieron Pollard who proved his mettle with a match winning performance of 38-ball 57 in the previous game.

Local boy Rohit Sharma will be hoping to find some form after consecutive failures, while Ambati Rayudu would be eager to score after managing only 25 runs in the two games.

Mumbai`s bowling looks formidable and the pace attack will be bolstered by the return of Sri Lankan pace spearhead Lasith Malinga, who missed the first two games due to a sore back.

Newcomer Jaspreet Bumrah emerged as the surprise performer against Royal Challengers Bangalore with an impressive three for 32, while Munaf Patel put his experience to good use, scalping three for 29 against Chennai.

On the other hand, having lost both the matches they have played so far, Delhi Daredevils need a turnaround to put their campaign back on track.

Despite losing two matches on the trot Delhi Daredevils captain Mahela Jayawardene stressed that it`s still early days in the tournament and his team can`t be written off.

The Delhi team would look to bounce back from their six-wicket loss to Kolkata Knight Riders in the campaign opener followed by a five-run loss to Rajasthan Royals.

The middle order has been a cause of concern for the side and missing out key players such as Kevin Pietersen and Jesse Ryder due to injuries hasn`t helped their cause either.

Delhi have been without the services of swashbuckling Indian opener Virender Sehwag, who missed the first two matches due to back spasms. The visitors are hoping for his return to strengthen the batting unit.

Australian opener David Warner has been in good form and almost steered his team to victory against Rajasthan Royals with a 56-ball 77 that comprised of nine fours and a six.

India`s under-19 World Cup winning captain Unmukt Chand, who hit two successive centuries for Delhi in the recent Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, hasn`t shone with the bat and the Delhi youngster would be eager to be among runs.

Despite the unavailability of last year`s Purple-Cap holder, Morne Morkel, Delhi`s bowling attack has been a force to reckon with, and it will be reinforced with the South African`s presence for the Mumbai game.

Pacers Ashish Nehra and Umesh Yadav have done well, with Yadav snapping up four wickets for 24 runs against Rajasthan Royals. Irfan Pathan, who has so far remained wicket-less, would try to make early inroads in the famed Mumbai batting line up.

Mumbai Indians: Ricky Ponting (c), Abu Nechim Ahmed, Akshar Patel, Aditya Tare, Aiden Blizzard, Ambati Rayudu, Amitoze Singh, Dhawal Kulkarni, Dinesh Karthik, Dwayne Smith, Glenn Maxwell, Harbhajan Singh, Jacob Oram, Jalaj Saxena, James Franklin, Kieron Pollard, Lasith Malinga, Mitchell Johnson, Munaf Patel, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Phil Hughes, Pawan Suyal, Pragyan Ojha, Rishi Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, Sachin Tendulkar, Suryakumar Yadav, Sushant Marathe, Yuzvendra Singh Chahal.

Royal Challengers Bangalore vs Sunrisers Hyderabad – Preview – IPL 2013 #RCB #SRH

Posted: 08 Apr 2013 05:19 AM PDT

Jolted by a narrow loss, Royal Challengers Bangalore would aim for revenge when they take on table-toppers Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League on Tuesday.

Royal Challengers Bangalore vs Sunrisers Hyderabad - Preview - IPL 2013

RCB lost to Hyderabad in the Super Over at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium last night and avenging the close defeat would be on the RCB players` minds when they take to the field on home turf.

A win tomorrow would give RCB some much-needed confidence when they face defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders, who had comfortably defeated Delhi Daredevils by six wickets in the opening encounter of this year`s IPL.

Hyderabad, on the other hand, would be keen to extend their winning run after consecutive victories lifted them to the top spot in the points table.

Team Bangalore`s bowling has been their strength with Vinay Kumar making an impact in the absence of injured pace spearhead Zaheer Khan.

RCB do not seem to be missing Zaheer as almost all their bowlers have done their bit. Muttiah Muralitharan, Jaydev Unadkat, Murali Karthik and Moises Henriques have picked up wickets at crucial stages of the matches.

Batting, in contrast, has struggled as apart from the big-hitting Chris Gayle and Virat Kohli, the others have failed to deliver. Tillakaratne Dilshan and Mayank Agarwal have been the significant failures in the batting line-up.

Their over-dependence on Gayle was evident in the last game against Hyderabad where they could muster up only 130 compared to 156 against Mumbai Indians when the West Indian stroked an unbeaten 92.

Dilshan has scores of 0 and 5 against Mumbai Indians and Hyderabad, respectively.

On the other hand, Hyderabad are on a high going into the match having tasted victories in their first two matches.

They first defeated last year`s laggards Pune Warriors by 22 runs in a low-scoring match and then posted a nail-biting win over RCB in the Super Over last night on their home ground.

The rechristened Hyderabad team, however, has batting worries as none of their top batsmen have fired which has reflected in the team scores (126 for six and 130 for seven).

Their skipper Kumar Sangakkara has managed to score just 31 in two matches. Parthiv Patel and Cameron White, except for his fireworks in the Super Over against Bangalore, have also not exactly flourished.

Thisara Perera put up a good show against Pune Warriors by scoring 30 vital runs, but in the next match he could gather just seven.

Also the injuries to J P Duminy and Shikhar Dhawan, who hammered the fastest Test century on debut against Australia last month, have added to their batting worries.

Hyderabad skipper Kumar Sangakkara was under attack for dropping himself low in order in the last game against RCB .

Though Hyderabad`s batting has not fired so far, bowling is their strength as they successfully defended small totals against Pune Warriors and the formidable batting lineup of Bangalore.

The star of the bowling attack is Dale Steyn, the number one Test bowler who has picked up four wickets so far. The South African bowled a magnificent Super Over to restrict Gayle and Kohli and take Hyderabad to victory last night.

The lanky Ishant Sharma (3 wickets), Thisara Perera (3) and spinner Amit Mishra (4), who bagged the man-of-the-match award for his 3-19 spell against Pune, have been a good foil for the South African speedster.

Teams (from):
Royal Challengers Bangalore: Virat Kohli (captain), Abhimanyu Mithun, Abhinav Mukund, Andrew McDonald, Chateshwar Pujara, Christopher Barnwell, Daniel Vettori, Harshal Patel, KP Appanna, Moises Henriques, Chris Gayle, Tilkaratne Dilshan, Mayank Agarwal, Daniel Christian, Karun Nair, Arun Karthik, J Unadkat, Vinay Kumar, Muttiah Muralitharan, Murali Kartik, Pankaj Singh and P Prasanth.

Sunrisers Hyderabad: K Sangakkara (captain), Akshat Reddy, Ashish Reddy, Dale Steyn, Parthiv Patel, Cameron White, Hanuma Vihari, Thisara Perera, DB Ravi Teja, Amit Mishra, Ishant Sharma, Nathan McCullum, Ankit Sharma, Anand Rajan and Biplab Samantray, Chrisl Lynn, Darren Sammy, Karan Sharma, Prashant Padmanabhan, Quinton de Cock, Sachin Rana, Shikhar Dhawan, Sundeep Tyagi, T Sargunam, Veer Pratap Singh.

High on confidence after tasting victories in their tournament openers, both Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals will look to extend their winning run when the two teams square-off in the Indian Premier League match here on Monday.

Rajasthan Royals vs Kolkata Knight Riders - Preview - IPL 2013

While the defending champions KKR beat Delhi Daredevils comfortably by six wickets in a low-scoring match in the tournament opener, the Royals eked out a five-run win over the same opponents in their first game.

The Royals, who have looked awry since their inaugural edition feat, will take confidence from the fact that they had beaten KKR by 22 runs at the same venue exactly a year ago in previous edition of the cash-rich event.

Add to it, their last outing against the Daredevils when skipper Rahul Dravid struck a 51-ball 65 and Stuart Binny chipped in with quickfire 40 off just 20 balls to help the team, would also give them an edge.

However, the fact that they were lucky to have scrapped through against a depleted Delhi-side and were unable to tighten the noose at crucial moments, will play in their mind.

Both openers Ajinkya Rahane (28) and Kusal Perera (14) got starts but failed to convert them into big scores.

Despite Dravid, Rahane and Binny in good nick, Royals were unable to give necessary thrust to their innings.

The hosts, however, would be bolstered by the presence of explosive Australia all-rounder Shane Watson at the top of the order, who is expected to take the field tomorrow at the Sawai Man Singh Stadium.

But the team might just have a fitness worry with 40-year-old Dravid pulling a calf muscle on Saturday and did not field for the better part of Delhi run-chase.

The former India captain though had assured that he would try his best to play against the KKR.

“It was severe bout of cramps. I will do everything to play the next match (against KKR) but I need to see that how I get up tomorrow and if there`s any stiffness,” Dravid had said after the match against Delhi.

Royals` bowling also lacked the penetration and it was left to Kevin Cooper (three for 30) to restrict the opponents who needed only nine runs from the last over.

The team will be hoping for Shaun Tait, S Sreesanth, Samuel Badree and the likes to come good with the ball.

KKR, on the other hand, with their allround strength will be looking to avenge their last year`s defeat. And they would certainly fancy their chances against the Royals.

Even though the Knight Riders chased down a modest total of 129 against Delhi, skipper Gautam Gambhir, Jacques Kallis, Manoj Tiwary, Eoin Morgan and Yusuf Pathan — all showed their potential and the visitors would hoping to dominate Royals` not-so-impressive bowling lineup tomorrow.

As far as KKR`s bowling is concerned, their `mystery` spinner Sunil Narine, who with his brilliant figures of four for 13 had kept the Daredevils under tight leash, will be a force to reckon with.

The West Indian had scalped 24 wickets in the last edition of IPL to finish as the second highest wicket-taker behind Morne Morkel.

Besides, Australian veteran Brett Lee, who has doubled up as a bowling mentor in absence of Wasim Akram, will spearhead the pace attack.

Adding variety to the attack will be Laxmipathy Balaji and all rounders Jacques Kallis, Rajat Bhatia and Laxmi Ratan Shukla.

They all had a good outing against Delhi and would look to fire in unison once again.

Rajasthan Royals will have to raise the bar if they want to thwart the defending champions.

Meanwhile, the Rajathan Cricket Association curator Taposh Chatterjee feels that the wicket will be ideal for a Twenty20 game but dew might play a role in the later part of the evening.

“We got the ground a bit late but with the kind of equipment at our disposal we could have ground and wicket in good shape. We have the resources to minimise the affect of dew,” he said.

Rajasthan Royals: Rahul Dravid, Ajinkya Rahane, Shane Watson, Ajit Chandila, Ankeet Chavan, Ashok Menaria, Brad Hogg, Brad Hodge, Dishant Yagnik, Fidel Edwards, Harmeet Singh, James Faulkner, Kevon Cooper, Kumar Boresha, Kushal Perera, Owais Shah, Pravin Tambe, Rahul Shukla, S Sreesanth, Sachin Baby, Samual Badree, Sanju Samson, Shaun Tait, Sreevats Goswami, Siddharth Trivedi, Stuart Binny, Vikramjeet Malik.

Kolkata Knight Riders: Gautam Gambhir (captain), Brad Haddin, Brett Lee, Debabrata Das, Eoin Morgan, Iqbal Abdulla, Jacques Kallis, James Pattinson, Laxmipathy Balaji, Laxmi Ratan Shukla, Manoj Tiwary, Manvinder Bisla, Shami Ahmed, Pradeep Sangwan, Rajat Bhatia, Ryan McLaren, Ryan ten Doeschate, Sachitra Senanayake, Sarabjit Ladda, Sunil Narine and Yusuf Pathan.
