Chris Gayle shines as Bangalore beat Mumbai in last-ball thrillerChris Gayle smashed an unbeaten 92 before R Vinay Kumar`s three-wicket burst helped Royal Challengers Bangalore eke out a close two-run win over Mumbai Indians in a thrilling Indian Premier League match here today.

Asked to bat, Gayle first single-handedly powered RCB to a fighting 156 for five before Vinay Kumar (3/27) picked up two crucial wickets in a tense final over to restrict Mumbai to 154 for five.

Needing 10 runs of the final over, Vinay Kumar picked up the crucial wickets of dangerman Dinesh Karthik (60) and Ambati Rayudu in successive balls to snatch the win for RCB.

Kieron Pollard gave a late scare to the hosts when he hit Vinay Kumar straight for a boundary to bring down the equation to four off the last ball, but the RCB bowler kept his cool and gave away just one run to hand his side a winning start.

Earlier, after a relatively slow start, Gayle upped his tempo and scored his 92 off just 58 balls with the help of 11 fours and five towering sixes to take RCB past the 150-mark.

Chasing the challenging total, Mumbai made a steady start with skipper Ricky Ponting and Sachin Tendulkar putting on 52 runs for the opening wicket before both departed quickly.

While Ponting made a quiet 28 off 33 balls, Tendulkar was the aggressor among the duo scoring his 23 runs off just 19 balls with the help of four fours, two of which came of successive balls off Mutttiah Muralitharan`s opening over.

Tendulkar did not take any undue risk during his knock and seemed eager to stay there till the end. But his innings was cut short when he fell prey to a close run out.

Ten runs later Mumbai slumped to 62 for two when Ponting was stumped by K B Arun Karthik off left-arm spinner Murali Kartik in the 10th over.

Talented Rohit Sharma (11) wasted yet another opportunity as the Mumbai batsman, going for a huge heave over midwicket off R Vinay Kumar, missed a straight ball which crashed on to his off stump.

With some tight bowling, RCB made life difficult for Mumbai therafeter as Karthik and Ambati Rayudu found it hard to hit boundaries.

After a few hits and misses, Karthik finally broke his shackles and clobbered Christian for three consecutive sixes and a boundary to pick up 24 runs off the 17th over and also make a well-deserved fifty off just 31 balls.

But once Karthik and Rayudu`s 60-run stand was broken in the final over, the asking became too tall for Pollard and the Mumbai outfit to achieve.

Earlier sent into bat, Gayle initially adopted a wait and watch policy on a seaming Chinnaswammy track before exploding in the eight over.

Even though wickets kept tumbling at the other end, the big-hitting West Indian was hardly bothered as he went about his business in style, notching up his 13th IPL fifty and first of the season.

The start, however, was far from rosy for the home team as they lost Tillakaratne Dilshan early, bowled by Mitchell Johnson with the scoreboard reading just three.

Newly-appointed RCB captain Virat Kohli played a short 24-run cameo before he was LBW by debutant Jasprit Bumrah, who returned with the best figures for the Mumbai outfit scalping three wickets for 32 runs.

Bumrah, with a unique action, then accounted for Mayank Agarwal in his next over caught by Sachin Tendulkar.

With wickets falling at the other end, it took Gayle eight overs to broke his shackles when he cracked a boundary and a six off Bumrah in consecutive balls.

After a relatively quiet first 10 overs that produced just 59 runs, RCB rode on Gayle`s pyrotechnics to score 97 runs in the next 60 deliveries.

After opening up, Gayle then targeted his West Indian team-mate Kieron Pollard, picking up 15 runs with two boundaries and a six off the 11th over

Gayle and KB Arun Karthik (19 not out) shared an unconquered 81-run stand for the sixth wicket to help RCB`s cause.

Gayle: ‘I was really hitting the ball well and not running. I am fine and I should be fit for the next game. I might change my mode of play for the next game. I needed to stay there and I am happy that I managed to hang in there. I utilized the conditions well and there was some pressure. The partnership with Christian was crucial and the bowlers backed up the good work. I am probably the best off-spinner in the team.’

Chris Gayle is the MoM for his unbeaten knock of 92.

Virat Kohli: ‘It was an emotional match. Gayle batted beautifully. The wicket had a lot to offer for the bowlers and dew played a big factor. I commit myself 100% and the way how they fielded was wonderful. We have bowlers in the side who can deliver a win for the team. Unadkat and Vinay Kumar bowled a good spell at the end. Gayle is our impact player.’

Ricky Ponting: ‘We did a good job with the ball but we should have chased this target down. We did not get going at the start and it was a topsy turvy game. We have got to analyze our game a bit and work out the flaws for the coming games. It has been some time since I captained a side and I am getting into the groove. Full credit goes to the Bangalore boys. Bumrah has an unusual action and he did not let the team down.’

Toss: Mumbai have won the toss and elected to field

Ricky Ponting: ‘We will be alright with the batting order. Johnson, Oram, Pollard and myself are the four overseas players. I played a few games in season one and I am looking forward to the sixth season. We have to be brave and fearless. There is a little bit more grass on this deck. The scores are generally high at this venue. We are going to bowl. The new ball bowlers will look to exploit the conditions. We have good balance in the team.’

Virat Kohli: ‘I have captained a few games in the previous seasons. I am part of this franchise from the beginning and I am proud to lead them. It is odd that Anil Kumble is not in the team and we will miss him. Gayle is an amazing T20 player and he has entertained one and all. We have a strong side and we have to work hard on the field. We were looking to bowl first. I hope we can turn the tables on Mumbai. Gayle, Dilshan, Christian and Muralitharan are the four overseas players.’

Kolkata supporters more loyal than Delhi, says Gautam Gambhir #KKR #DD

Kolkata supporters more loyal than Delhi, says Gautam GambhirKolkata Knight Riders skipper Gautam Gambhir said his KKR supporters were “more loyal” than the fans of Delhi Daredevils, which was his previous team, in the Indian Premier League.

“I`ve played for three years in Delhi but I think they were not as loyal as Kolkata is for KKR,” Gambhir, whose hometown is Delhi, said after the win on Wednesday.

The 67,000 capacity Eden Gardens was bathed in purple — KKR jersey`s colour — and was packed to the hilt for the first match of the IPL 6. The home side did not disappoint, taming Delhi by six wickets with eight balls to spare.

“The crowd is one advantage and can be heartbreaking for the opponents. It`s always a great feeling when you walk on to the field with 70,000 crowd backing you,” Gambhir said.

“For me there`s no home advantage. It`s about playing good cricket. We don`t discuss about the wicket in the dressing room,” he added.

Gambhir was KKR`s top-scorer with a 29-ball 41 in the 129-run chase and he said he always preferred to play aggressive.

“My instincts have always been attacking whatever the format may be. I don`t want to be in a mode when I`m looking to survive.

“When you`re looking to attack, you`re looking to score runs and then you`ve a better footwork to score runs,” he said.

No intentions of ending Abdul Razzaq career, says Iqbal Qasim

Posted: 04 Apr 2013 05:15 AM PDT

No intentions of ending Abdul Razzaq career, says Iqbal QasimPakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief selector Iqbal Qasim has insisted that the board has no intentions to end the career of all-rounder Abdul Razzaq after the player was excluded from the preliminary squad for the ICC Champions Trophy.

The exclusion of Razzaq, who was also sidelined for the team`s tour to India along with Shahid Afridi, who, however, is in the Champions Trophy list, has given rise to talks of his exit from international cricket.

According to sources close to the player, the all-rounder, who has played 265 one day matches, is depressed and has thus sidelined himself from domestic tournaments.

Stating that isolating himself was not a solution for any cricketer, the chief selector said that a cricketer cannot stay away from the field for too long and added that they cannot consider Razzaq until they see him on the field to assess his form and fitness.

Qasim further said that Razzaq can also make a comeback by proving his worth in domestic cricket, adding that the same applies to Younis Khan, who also had been dropped from the preliminary squad.
