New Zealand beat India by 1-run in last ball thriller on Yuvraj’s return

Posted: 11 Sep 2012 12:05 PM PDT

Yuvraj Singh made an emotional return to international cricket but India snatched defeat from the jaws of victory to allow New Zealand to win the Twenty20 series with a thrilling one-run victory on Tuesday.

Scorecard | 2nd T20 Highlights

Chasing a target of 168, the hosts were cruising along comfortably at one stage but faltered at the death to give Black Caps a 1-0 series win.

The first T20 international in Visakhapatnam was washed out without a ball being bowled.

Men in Blue needed 13 runs from the last over but could manage only manage 11 in a dramatic finish which saw Virat Kohli’s blazing 40-ball 70 go in-vain.

Once Kohli was dismissed was out in the 14th over, the momentum suddenly shifted as Yuvraj who scored 34 off 26 balls with a boundary and two sixes along Mahendra Singh Dhoni (22 not out) couldn’t find the ropes. New Zealand’s experienced T20 bowlers Jacob Oram and James Franklin used the slower deliveries to good effect.

It was Franklin who bowled well disguised slower delivery to clean up Yuvraj. With six required from last two deliveries, Rohit Sharma could only manage four with couple of doubles. Franklin took a bow and Indian dressing room were stunned in disbelief as to how they managed to lose this match from a winning position.

A target of 168 is respectable by any standards but Kohli started in right earnest as he hit a flurry of boundaries. He hit some lovely cover drives, a good straight drive, a lofted shot over mid-off as India scored 47 in the first Powerplay.

Gautam Gambhir came cropper as he closed his bat face to give a return catch to Kyle Mills but there was no stopping Kohli as he repeatedly found the boundary.

Kohli completed a well-deserved half century off 30 balls when he charged out to hit left-arm spinner Ronnie Heera for a boundary.

Suresh Raina hit the inexperienced left-arm spinner for a six but then offered a tame catch to rival skipper Ross Taylor at covers. Raina hit 27 and more importantly added 60 runs for the second wicket with Kohli in only 7.1 overs to put India’s chase on track.

With Raina’s departure, in walked Yuvraj with a standing ovation from the Chepauk crowd. He played one behind square to get off the mark and then got a thickish edge past first slip for a boundary.

The smile on his mother Shabnam Singh’s face said it all. To find her son get back to where he belongs is the greatest satisfaction for a mother and it was writ large on her face.

The six over long-on off Daniel Vettori sent the crowd in a frenzy as India slowly but surely surged towards victory. Kohli hit his first six over extra cover in the same Vettori over but James Franklin finally got him caught in the deep.

India had firm grip on the match till Kohli was present at the crease but once he was gone, it slipped away with New Zealand maintaining their brilliant T20 International record against India. The Black Caps now have a 4-0 record in head-to-head clashes.

Earlier, Brendon McCullum smashed his way to a 55-ball 91 as New Zealand recovered from a jittery start to post a respectable 167 for five on a batting friendly pitch.

New Zealand’s finest T20 batsman McCullum took Indian bowlers to cleaners after the ‘Black Caps’ were reduced 2/2 with both openers back in the hut.

McCullum hit as many as 11 boundaries and three huge sixes including a couple off Ravichandran Ashwin.

The foundation of the New Zealand innings was 90-run third wicket partnership between McCullum and Kane Williamson, who contributed 28. More than the runs he scored, Williamson gave McCullum freedom to play his natural and aggressive game which has made the latter a big hit in the shortest format.

Irfan Pathan was most successful Indian bowler with figures of three for 31 including the prize scalp of McCullum, who was looking good for his second T20 International century.

Pathan foxed him with slower delivery that he failed to connect and it hit the stumps after brushing his pads.

Put into bat, New Zealand started on a disastrous note as they lost both their openers Rob Nicol and Martin Guptill within the first two overs.

Nicol was bowled off the last delivery of the first over from Zaheer Khan as he shuffled across towards off-stump only to miss a fuller delivery that pegged his leg stump back. He couldn’t open his account.

Irfan Pathan also delivered in his very first over as his trademark inswinger saw Guptill being castled after playing to a wrong line after scoring only one.

McCullum and Williamson then started the repair work. After carefully negotiating the opening bowlers for a couple of overs, McCullum chanced his arms as he first hit Zaheer over square leg and then flashed hard through point region to get a couple of boundaries.

Lakshmipathy Balaji, who made his T20 debut for India was also hit for a couple of boundaries from MCCullum although the first one was a streaky inside edge.

A huge roar went up as Yuvraj came into bowl his left-arm spinners. The first over went for only four runs but in the second over, McCullum gave him the charge hitting him over sight screen for a huge six.

India vs New Zealand 2nd T20 Post Match Presentation Chennai 2012

Ross Taylor: I think James Franklin needs a big pat on the back. To come out and bowl like that at the end he deserves a pat. We gave ourselves a chance after getting to 160. Virat Kohli batted well, could have taken the game away. We will take this win and confidence into the World Cup. The tour has been tough. Hopefully we can turn it on in the World Cup.

Brendon McCullum: My head’s is ok. Kyle is a bit dazed. The pitch was really good in the first 20 overs. It was good in the first 6 overs of the Indian batting, but slowed down later. After 14 overs, I was being affected by the heat. It was nice to get a win and was very important. It was probably my fault ( the collision with Kyle Mills). Thankfully it wasn’t too bad in the end. Makes it a lot better knowing that we have a win.

Brendon McCullum is the Man of the Match and the Man of the Series.

Dhoni: I think they bowled brilliantly and the wicket slowed down a bit. I and Yuvi did find it hard in the middle. Virat gave us a very good start and Raina also batted better. This is a good thing for us ahead of the World Cup. We thought the wicket will stay good till the end, but it slowed down a bit and if it had stayed better we could have performed better. WE are playing too many shot at the start and we need to work on that in the upcoming World Cup

James Franklin: It’s an awesome feeling. It’s been a tough tour but this win will help us. I was not expecting to bowl four overs today. I just tried to do my job and it was my day today. Virat Kohli played a fantastic innings. It’s a funny game, T20s, and it takes only a couple of overs to change. Brendon batted well to get a good score on the board and we did well to defend that.

Dhoni: We’ll bowl first. Looks like a good wicket and it will remain the same. It’s good practice but it’s an international game and not a warm up, so we have to be at our best. We have a good fielding side. Viru is not fit. Harbhajan, Piyush and Dinda are not playing as well.

Pitch report: Typical Chennai pitch. There is a tinge of green at the start of the pitch but the middle region is different. There are some dry areas and some cracks, which will help the spinners. It’ll be good for batting and the spinners will enjoy bowling as well.

Preview: India vs New Zealand 2nd T20 Chennai 2012

Posted: 10 Sep 2012 01:30 PM PDT

Two days after his much-awaited comeback match was washed out due to persistent rain, the focus is back on Yuvraj Singh as he looks to resume his innings in international cricket with the second Twenty20 game between India and New Zealand on Tuesday.

The first T20 in Visakhapatnam was called off without a ball being bowled, leaving the thousands who had thronged the stadium to watch Yuvraj’s much-anticipated return from a successful battle against a rare germ cell cancer, disappointed as rain had the final say.

Yuvraj was diagnosed with the ailment between his lungs within months of winning the Man of the Tournament award in the 2011 World Cup.

His career looked in jeopardy when the diagnosis was first revealed but the flamboyant all-rounder fought back after undergoing three cycles of chemotherapy in USA.

After a satisfactory rehabilation programme at the NCA, the 30-year-old left-hander will be donning the Team India jersey for the first time post-treatment, and he will surely look to make a statement at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.

His last International appearance was the Kolkata Test against the West Indies in November last year, while it was more than a year ago when he last played a T20 (against South Africa on January 9, 2011).

Besides Yuvraj, the match will also mark Harbhajan Singh’s return to the squad after a long layoff. The off-spinner had gone out of favour after being blanked 0-4 in the disastrous England tour in July-August last year.

However, with his immediate challenger Ravichandran Ashwin in great form, having taken wickets by the bagful in recent times, chances of Harbhajan being included in the playing XI does not look too bright.

It will be interesting to see if the think-tank goes for an all-offspin attack.
The brief two-match series assumes significance as it is being looked upon as the start of India’s countdown for the World Twenty20 that will get underway in Sri Lanka on September 18.

And with the first match being washed out, the Men in Blue will look to utilise tomorrow’s encounter to the fullest, though inclement weather can play spoilsport again.

The visitors may hold an edge statistically having won all their three T20 ties against India, but the hosts will still start as favourites after their 2-0 sweep in the Test series.

While Yuvraj and Harbhajan’s presence have added to their strengths, India’s mainstay in batting in recent months has undoubtedly been Virat Kohli.

The youngster from Delhi has been going through a purple patch of sorts, having scored runs in every format of the game and against almost every opposition.

The hosts also have, in the ranks, Suresh Raina, who have always excelled in this format. Having played here in four out of the last five editions of the Indian Premier League, the Chennai Super Kings knows the conditions like back of his hand.

Add to it the explosive opening pair of Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir, and the batting line-up looks formidable.

Sehwag has not been in the best of form of late, but one can never take him lightly.

Last but not the least is the calm influence of skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, one of the hardest hitters in world cricket.

In the middle-order Rohit Sharma will have to prove his worth soon enough or the struggling batsman might end up losing his spot to the talented Manoj Tiwary, who has been waiting in the wings.

As far as bowling is concerned, Ashwin will be the man to look out for as he flummoxed the Kiwis by picking up 18 wickets in the Test series. The local boy would be keen to continue the dream run in front of his home crowd.

The resurgence of seamer Irfan Pathan in the last ODI series in Sri Lanka is another positive for India.

Also returing to side, after being on the sidelines for more than three and a half years, will be pacer Laxmipathy Balaji.

The unassuming bowler paved the way for his comeback with a tidy performance for IPL champions Kolkata Knight Riders, and he will certainly look to make an impression if he gets a look-in alongside spearhead Zaheer Khan.

On the other hand, New Zealand have been struggling for a while now, having lost three consecutive Test series (against South Africa, West Indies and India).

The Black Caps will look to experienced campaigners such as Jacob Oram, Daniel Vettori and Kyle Mills — the three have joined the side for the T20s — for a turnaround in their fortunes ahead of the World T20.

Captain Ross Taylor, who struck a counter-attacking century in the Test series, and big-hitting opener Brendon McCullum will have to shoulder the batting responsibilty.

The ones mentioned above have the experience of playing in these conditions thanks to their IPL stints.

The visitors will also expect handy contributions from pacers Doug Bracewell, Tim Southee and James Franklin. (PTI)

India (Probable): Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Yuvraj Singh, Mahendra Singh Dhoni (c&wk), Suresh Raina, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Ravichandran Ashwin, Laxmipathy Balaji
