Preview: India vs Australia, Super 8, T20 World Cup 2012

Posted: 27 Sep 2012 02:30 PM PDT

India are likely to go in with five specialist bowlers to plug their bowling loopholes when they take on the mighty Australians in its opening ‘Super Eight’ fixture of the ICC World Twenty20 on Friday.

The comprehensive victory against England and Harbhajan Singh’s brilliant comeback has raised questions as to what exactly will be a winning combination against George Bailey’s men who have looked good in both their group league matches against Ireland and West Indies respectively.

Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has given clear indications that he would go in with five specialist bowlers, a move which will mean that India will have one batsman short.

In that case, either opener Virender Sehwag or Yuvraj Singh may have to sit out of the match and Dhoni admitted that it would be a “tough decision”.

While the England match was won with five bowlers, it was more about testing a different combination as the result had no bearing on the Super Eights classification.

It will be interesting to see what bowling combination Dhoni would prefer for the first ‘super eight’ game and whether he would opt for three spinners or three pacers.

On current form, Lakshmipathy Balaji is a better bowler at the death overs than the 33-year-old Zaheer Khan mainly because of the variety of slower deliveries that he has in his repertoire.

The two key batsmen in the Australian set-up are left-handers David Warner and Mike Hussey. The presence of the duo at the top of the order certainly means that Harbhajan’s inclusion is necessary because of his stupendous record against the left-handers.

Ravichandran Ashwin, who was rested against England, will also make a comeback into the playing eleven. The other certainty in the bowling department is Irfan Pathan, who has been providing the team with breakthroughs regularly.

The batting, however, bears a much more settled look with the good news being that Gautam Gambhir and Rohit Sharma are back among runs.

The only thing to worry will be Yuvraj Singh’s place in batting order. The talented left-hander has been struggling with the bat.

While ODI matches give him a chance to settle down, the number of dot balls Yuvraj has played in the recent matches is something that he needs to figure out.

Although the 22-yard strip at the R Premadasa Stadium will assist the slower bowlers, the Aussie fast bowlers are likely to test the Indian batsman with short-pitched stuff.

The Indian team was seen preparing to counter the bouncers and the players were seen playing the horizontal bat shot during the nets.

A lot will depend on how Virat Kohli bats as he has been in the form of his life. Even Hussey had admitted yesterday that the Aussies were expecting Kohli to have one of his rare off-days against them.

Rohit’s half-century has certainly boosted his confidence and the innings has come at the right time as the margin for error is too little at this stage of the tournament.

The main threat for India will be all-rounder Shane Watson who in prime form having won back-to-back MoM awards.

Watson has been cleverly used by skipper Bailey as he has proved to be a potent partnership breaker.

The Indian batsmen will need to be careful against Watson. Left-arm seamer Mitchell Starc can prove to be a handful but it will be chinaman bowler Brad Hogg who will need to play a big role.

The only problem for Australia will be its middle-order which hasn’t been tested in the two matches which were single-handedly won by Watson.

The all-rounder has taken full advantage of the Powerplay overs to slaughter the bowlers. With Warner and Hussey for company, the ‘terrific trio’ make up for a superb top-order.

Friday’s match will be a duel between two bowling units where Indian spinners are pitted against Aussie pacers in what promises to be a fantastic form. (PTI)

Preview: Pakistan vs South Africa, Super 8, T20 World Cup 2012

Posted: 27 Sep 2012 01:30 PM PDT

They have so far maintained a clean slate and there is very little to separate the two teams as South Africa lock horns with Pakistan in what is expected to be a battle of attrition in their ICC World Twenty20 Super Eight match on Friday.

Both teams will be equally confident after their emphatic showings in the group stage of the tournament, and it will be interesting to see who emerges winner at the R Premadasa Stadium stadium.

Pakistan, winner of the 2009 edition, won both their group league matches with ease.

If skipper Mohammad Hafeez and Nasir Jamshed shone in their win over New Zealand, Imran Nazir led the way with an onslaught that left the Bangladesh bowlers shell-shocked in their last game.

Hafeez deserves mention as he led admirably with both bat and ball, his canny off-spinners often proving to be a perfect foil for Saeed Ajmal, who has become a sort of a headache for batsmen the world over.

Flashy wicketkeeper-batsman Kamran Akmal has also shown glimpses of his brilliance and looked in good nick against their South Asian rivals.

Pacers Umar Gul and Sohail Tanvir haven’t really fired, but Yasir Arafat made an impact with three Bangladeshi wickets, and Pakistan are unlikely to make any changes to the squad that played in the last game.

The match assumes more significance for Pakistan as a win against the Proteas will put them in the perfect frame of mind ahead of the big-ticket encounter with arch-rival India on Sunday.

South Africa have been their consistent self in the group stage, but the real tournament starts now, and more so for the Proteas.

The shocking 2011 World Cup quarterfinal defeat to New Zealand still fresh in mind, South Africa would once again would look to shed the tag of perennial chokers in ICC tournament, and a win tomorrow will be a positive step in that direction.

A look at their performance in the group stage will only add to South Africa’s confidence going into the competitive round.

Led by the explosive A B de Villiers, the team hammered neighbours Zimbabwe by 10 wickets to start the tournament in the best possible manner.

In the rain-reduced seven-over hit against hosts Sri Lanka, the Proteas were well served by the skipper, who helped them to a 32-run win in Hambantota.

There is no dearth of strokemakers in the SA line-up and right from the in-form Hashim Amla to the great Jacques Kallis, each one of them is capable of single-handedly turning a match on its head.

The presence of Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel and his brother Albie make for an effective pace battery. (PTI)

Teams (probable):

Pakistan: Mohammad Hafeez (c), Imran Nazir, Nasir Jamshed, Kamran Akmal (wk), Umar Akmal, Shoaib Malik, Shahid Afridi, Yasir Arafat, Sohail Tanvir, Umar Gul, Saeed Ajmal.

South Africa: Richard Levi, Hashim Amla, Faf du Plessis, AB de Villiers (c & wk), Farhaan Behardien, Jacques Kallis, Jean-Paul Duminy, Albie Morkel, Johan Botha, Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel.

West Indies crush England despite Morgan’s fightback : T20 World Cup 2012

Posted: 27 Sep 2012 12:16 PM PDT

An impressive English fightback went in vain as West Indies beat England by 15 runs in their ICC World Twenty20 Super Eight match in Kandy on Thursday.

Scorecard | England vs West Indies Highlights

Chasing a target of 180 runs, Alex Hales (68) and Eoin Morgan (71*) put up an impressive fight by scorching a 100-plus partnership to lead the revival of the English chase after early dismissals left the Windies with an elevated required run-rate.

Chris Gayle struck in his first over to break the solid 55-run partnership between Hales and Jonny Bairstow as he dismissed the latter for 18 runs.

Kieron Pollard took a cracker of a catch while racing from long-on to send Bairstow packing after the Englishman thought that he had comfortably cleared the boundary.

Hales led the English fightback as he notched up a solid 36-ball fifty, which included five 4s and two 6s.

Earlier, after the early dismissals of Craig Kieswetter and Luke Wright, Hales and Bairstow put up a decent 50-plus partnership to revive the England innings.

Chasing the target of 180 runs, England were stunned by Ravi Rampaul as he struck on the second and third balls of England’s first over to dismiss Kieswetter and Wright early.

While Kieswetter played a terrible shot off a short of length ball to hit a simple one to the fielder at point, Wright on the other hand nicked an outside off ball straight to Chris Gayle at slips.

Previously with the help of heroics of Gayle (58) and Johnson Charles (84), West Indies set a 180-run target for England

West Indies finished with a decent score of 179/5 after 20 overs with Dwayne Bravo (11) and Andre Russell (10) still batting.

Jade Dernbach got the all important breakthrough for England when he scalped Charles (84) after his sweltering innings to give England some respite.

Earlier, Stuart Broad struck to dismiss Marlon Samuels (2), who in his attempt to slog a bouncer found the fielder waiting to receive the catch at backward point.

Charles, who notched up a scintillating 36-ball 50 with ten 4s and three 6s, kept the momentum with the West Indies in their onslaught against the Englishmen after the dismissal of Gayle.

After a blistering 29-ball 50 by Gayle (58), Graeme Swann stepped up the plate and dismissed the left-hander to the give England their first breakthrough.

Gayle smashed a brilliant half century with six 4s and four 6s to lead the West Indies attack; however, English spinner Swann got the better of the Calypso King when a lazy slog led to the left-hander being caught by Steven Finn.

Earlier, Gayle and Charles gave West Indies a rocking start as they put up a splendid 103-run partnership after skipper Darren Sammy won the toss and elected to bat.

Charles: ‘Feels very good. We basically want to win the tournament and it feels good to do well. It’s a similar pitch to the one in England. It’s hard to score if it’s pitched back of a length. Finn was difficult to score off, you had to spend time in the middle before scoring runs. It’s great to play with Gayle, it’s just a matter of staying with him and the runs will come.’

Charles is the Man of the Match

Sammy: ‘It was a very good performance. Charles and Gayle did well with the bat. We knew the wicket and the bowlers did well to defend the total. Looking at the other games player here, we were looking for 200. It gets difficult to stop the batsmen once they get going. Narine, Gayle and Marlon in the end were good. Unfortunately Russell didn’t get to bowl and I bowled only 1 over; the plan was to bowl spin at England.’

Broad: ‘We had to regroup after the first over. Losing 2 wickets at the top hurts a lot but Morgan was brilliant. We were quite happy with the bowling effort. Maybe 20 runs more would have been a par score I guess. Morgan has an amazing skill of finding the boundaries even when the field is back. The surface was a batsman’s paradise. It was hard to stop boundaries. It was a below par score and we should have chased it down’

England to face-off West Indies in the second super eight game. England lost heavily against India in the last game and showed that there batsman are unable to handle spin. West Indies will definitely look to exploit the area and Sunil Narine will play a key role in the game. Another point of worry for England is Chris Gayle back in action and his in form. Chris Gayle is like a one man army for West Indies and of he starts hitting then opponent will just see the ball smashing here and there.

Sri Lanka beat New Zealand in a thrilling super over : T20 World Cup 2012

Posted: 27 Sep 2012 10:25 AM PDT

Sri Lanka held their nerves in the Super Over to clinch their ICC T20 World Cup Super Eight tie against New Zealand by six runs at Pallekele on Thursday.

With both teams tied at 174 after the end of their innings, the result was decided with the help of a Super over.

Sri Lanka batsmen Mahela Jayawardene, Thisara Perera and Tillakaratne Dilshan scored 13 for one in the Super Over before paceman Lasith Malinga restricted New Zealand’s challenge to seven for one, accounting for Martin Guptill’s wicket on the fifth delivery.

The thrilling climax followed an equally dramatic run-chase by Sri Lanka as they replied to New Zealand’s 174 for seven with opener Tillakaratne Dilshan’s blitzkrieg at the top and his 80-run opening-wicket partnership with skipper Jayawardene at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium.

Sri Lanka required 28 from three overs, 21 from two and 8 runs in the last over, bowled by Tim Southee.

In the last over, Southee conceded just three runs off his first four deliveries to make the equation 5 required from two balls.

Lahiru Thirimanne tied the score with a four over short long leg and put his side in charge.

With one needed off the last ball, Thirimanne managed an inside edge and ran towards the non-striker’s end. James Franklin targeted the non-striker’s end where New Zealand skipper Ross Taylor was stationed.

Taylor dropped the ball which ricocheted off his hand and dislodged the bail, prompting the umpire to refer the decision to the third umpire.

TV replays showed that the ball deflected off Taylor’s hand and fell onto the stump, resulting in scores being tied.

The match provided complete entertainment to a sell-out crowd, who were left on the edges of their seat as both the teams fought for supremacy.

Dilshan (76) and Jayawardene (44) gave a dream start to Sri Lanka’s run chase before New Zealand pulled back through some fine bowling and fielding.

The hosts made heavy weather of their run chase after losing Kumar Sangakkara (21) and Jeevan Mendis (8) in quick succession.

Dilshan departed in the pen-ultimate over of the innings after hitting Franklin for a six off the first ball before being run out off the next.

It was the seventh tied match in all Twenty20 cricket, with New Zealand involved in four of them.

Earlier, a brisk half-century by opener Rob Nicol helped New Zealand reach a competitive total. He struck 58 off 40 balls and his knock was laced with three fours and four sixes.

Nicol took his time before launching an assault on the host bowlers to lay a solid platform for the Kiwis.

Nicol along with fellow opener Guptill got off to a cautious start before the latter started to fire, picking up boundaries on a regular basis.

It was debutant Akila Dananjaya who dismissed Guptill for a well-made 30-ball 38 off his first over. Guptill’s knock was studded with six hits to the fence.

After Guptill’s departure, Nicol and McCullum were watchful, but kept the scoreboard moving by hitting the occasional fours and sixes off the loose deliveries.

Luck was on Nicol’s side as he was dropped by Dananjaya when on 31.

Ajantha Mendis, however, cut short McCullum’s quickfire innings of 25 in the 13th over with New Zealand yet to reach the 100-run mark.

But in the very next over off Mendis, Nicol smashed three sixes to change the complexion of the game totally, adding 24 more runs to the Black Caps’ total.

Just when things started to look dangerous for the hosts, Dananjaya took his second wicket of the match, sending back Nicol.

Taylor (23) thereafter chipped in with some crucial runs that lifted the New Zealanders to a healthy total.

Mahela Jayawardene: We would have batted first as we had two spinners. Ajantha is 90% fit and he is vital. Dhananjaya had a good time in the recent SLPL.

Pitch Report: Tony Greig says, ‘The pitch looks flat. It is a new pitch. The pitch is becoming dry and the average score should be somewhere close to 155.’
