Preview: Sri Lanka vs South Africa, Group C, T20 World Cup 2012

Posted: 21 Sep 2012 02:30 PM PDT

Already assured of their places in the Super Eight stage of the ICC World Twenty20, both Sri Lanka and South Africa would be eyeing a win to top their pool when they play against each other in the marquee Group C clash at Hambantota on Saturday.

Both hosts Sri Lanka and South Africa had easy outings in their openers against Zimbabwe, who became the first team to crash out of the event with two consecutive losses.

While Sri Lanka mauled Zimbabwe by 82 runs, South Africa hammered Brendan Taylor’s men by 10 wickets.

Therefore, there will be very little to choose between the two sides ahead of the cracking contest at the Mahinda Rajapaksa stadium, which will determine the group winners going into the business end of the tournament.

The Lankans will be banking heavily on home advantage tomorrow to give them the edge over perennial under-achievers South Africa, who were ruthless against the Zimbabweans.

Most of the Lankan batsmen looked in good shape and got starts against Zimbabwe.

But come Saturday, the scenraio will be different as in South Africa they face a potent bowling attack which has the capability of dismantling any batting line-up.

In such a case, the onus would be on the experienced trio of captain Mahela Jayawardene, Kumar Sangakkara and Tillakaratne Dilshan to deliver the goods with the bat.

Even though Dilshan Munaweera looked decent with the bat against Zimbabwe, one expects Dinesh Chandimal to replace him against South Africa, which means Jayawardene will have to open the innings along with Tillakaratne Dilshan.

In Angelo Mathews, Lahiru Thirimanne, Jeevan Mendis and Thisara Perera, the Lankans have enough fire power in their lower middle-order.

Sri Lanka bowling too looked sharp against Zimbabwe the other day. While Lasith Malinga will speahead the pace battery in the company of Nuwan Kulasekara and Thisara Perera, Jeevan Mendis and Mathews will don the all-rounders role in the set-up.

But for the hosts, the trump card would be mystery spinner Ajantha Mendis, who returned to form in style with world record figures of six for eight against Zimbabwe.

South Africa, on the other hand, produced a clinical performance against Zimbabwe yesterday, and one can expect the same intensity from AB de Villiers’ men against the Lankans tomorrow.

Opening their campaign in the tournament on Thursday, South Africa first restricted Zimbabwe to 93 for eight and then piled up the runs without breaking a sweat with 10 wickets in hand.

Veteran all-rounder Jacques Kallis stole the show with the ball for South Africa picking up four wickets for 15 runs, while Morne Morkel (2 for 16) came up with a lethal opening spell to dismantle the Zimbabweans.

South Africa batting line-up, however, remains untested as Richard Levi and Hashim Amla chased down the paltry Zimbabwe total with consummate ease. Levi smashed his way to a 44-ball unbeaten 50 Hashim Amla remained not out on 32 from 33 balls as South Africa cruised home by 10 wickets.

But with the likes of Kallis, de Villiers, JP Duminy, Albie Morkel and Robin Peterson in the ranks, South Africa boats of a formidable batting line-up. (PTI)

England thrash Afghanistan by 116 runs: T20 World Cup 2012

Posted: 21 Sep 2012 01:17 PM PDT

Defending champions England started their campaign in style as they thrashed Afghanistan by 116 runs in a group league match of the ICC World Twenty20, on Friday.

Scorecard | England vs Afghanistan Highlights

Riding on Luke Wright’s superb unbeaten 99, England set a daunting target of 197 for the Afghans who could only manage 80 in 17.2 overs after being precariously placed at 26 for eight at one stage, and in serious danger of recording the lowest total in a T20 international.

Gulbodin Naib who made 44 was the only Afghan batsman to reach double figures and his innings helped them cross the ‘magic figure’ of 67 that was scored by Kenya against Ireland.

The England bowlers had the cushion of defending a big total and their pace trio of Steven Finn, skipper Stuart Broad and Jade Dernbach made life difficult for the inexperienced Afghan batsmen and by the end of first Powerplay, half of the them were back in the dug-out. Unlike their match against India, this one turned out to be a lopsided contest.

Earlier, Wright smashed the Afghan bowlers all around the park during his unbeaten knock of 55-ball-99 that contained eight fours and half a dozen of sixes.

In the process, Wright became England’s highest individual scorer in World T20, surpassing Kevin Pietersen’s 79.

He also got good support from the likes of Alex Hales and Eoin Morgan who chipped in with useful scores of 31 and 27 respectively.

Jos Butler (15) and Jonathan Bairstow (12) hit a few lusty blows to keep the momentum going for the defending champions.

Wright was unlucky to miss out on a three-figure mark as he got only two off the last ball of the innings. Earlier, he quickly reached 94 from 76 with three big hits off Izatullah Dawlatzai.

Dawlatzai, who gave away 56 runs in his three overs was hit for 32 in the penultimate over.

Having opted to field, Afghanistan seamer Shapoor Zadran provided a dream start to his team as he forced English opener Craig Kieswetter to chop one onto his stumps in what turned out to be a wicket maiden over.

Till the end of the fourth over, the unheralded Afghan bowlers did a decent job with England at 15 for one.

However, Afghanistan captain Nawroz Mangal’s decision to give Shapoor an extra over opened the floodgates.

The nippy left-armer couldn’t hold onto his nerve as he gave away 23 runs in the fifth over of the innings, which included three boundaries and a huge six from Wright.

Wright lifted Shapoor over long on boundary and prior to that hit a four. Hales also got a couple of boundaries in that over. In the very next over, England again scored 15 runs from seamer Dawlatzai’s over.

With 38 runs from two overs, England were off the blocks. Hales and Wright added 69 runs for the second wicket.

Hales was unfortunately run-out having backed too far with Wright’s firm push as the ball deflected off bowler Karim Sadiq’s hands to hit the stumps. The opener made 31 off 27 balls with help of five fours.

There was no stopping Wright though as he went from strength to strength. He lifted leggie Samiullah Shenwari over deep mid-wicket for a big six to reach 49 and then completed his half century with a single. His 50 came off 34 balls.

Left-hander Eoin Morgan also joined the party as they completed their half-century partnership off 38 balls.

The 16th over bowled by off-spinner Mohammed Nabi saw England plunder 22 runs with both Morgan and Wright hitting a six and a boundary each. By then England had set itself for a big total.

Wright: ‘It is always nice to score for the team, I wanted to do well and am pleased with my batting. I was trying to hit too hard previously, now I feel that I am improving as a player. Playing across the world has been beneficial to me, working with different coaches and players has been helpful. I want to bowl more, I am coming back from a knee injury which kept me away from bowling more frequently.’

Luke Wright is the MoM for his 99

Broad: ‘Luke was outstanding, the way we struck the ball towards the end of the innings was very exciting, we will look to do well in the remainder of the tournament as well. Luke has played a lot across the world and that experience showed. The short ball is a weapon that we would like to use more often against our opponents. AFG played really well and deserve to play at the highest level. We are fired up and would like to win the Sunday match against India.’

Mangal: ‘England are a champion team. We enjoyed playing in the tournament, we did well in the start but failed to put pressure, our fielding was not that good. We have learnt a lot, the fight against India is the only positive, we will look to do better in the next game. The expectations back home is high and unfortunately we did not live upto those. We will promise them of a much better show next time.’

New Zealand thrash Bangladesh by 59 runs: T20 World Cup 2012

Posted: 21 Sep 2012 07:50 AM PDT

New Zealand produced a disciplined bowling effort after Brendon McCullum’s magnificent 123 to clinch 59-run victory over Bangladesh in their ICC Twenty20 World Cup match.

Scorecard | New Zealand vs Bangladesh Highlights

New Zealand’s pacer Kyle Mills dismissed Tamim Iqbal, Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim in quick succession to rock Bangladesh chase. Tim Southee also joined the party removing Mohammad Ashraful to reduce Bangladesh 37/4 in 6.4 overs.

Mills struck in the first over of the innings to scalp Tamim for nought. Mills scalped Shakib and Mushfiqur in his successive overs to leave Bangladesh stuttering 33/3 in 4.4 overs.

Earlier, Brendon McCullum blasted his way to score 123 off 58 balls as he propelled New Zealand to mammoth 191/3.

McCullum became the first batsman to score two centuries in the shortest form of the game. His 123 is also the highest individual score in this format.

McCullum stitched 78 runs partnership off just 35 balls with skipper Ross Taylor to power Kiwis to huge total. Taylor also played a fine cameo with an unbeaten 14 off 12 balls.

Mashrafe Mortaza broke the second wicket stand between McCullum and James Franklin by removing the latter for 35.

McCullum smacked five fours and two sixes to reach his flamboyant fifty and ensured Kiwis to post the big total on the board for Bangladesh.

McCullum and James Franklin added 94 runs stand in 65 balls for the second wicket to steady New Zealand innings after losing the first wicket cheaply.

McCullum hammered a six over covers off Shakib Al Hasan to take Kiwis past fifty runs mark in the eight over. McCullum defied the Bangladesh attack with his powerful hitting after Kiwis struggled early in the innings.

Bangladesh spinner Abdur Razzak struck in his first over to give New Zealand early jolt as he scalped Martin Guptill. Guptill, who smashed a six in his 11 off 14 balls, tried to defend but missed the line of the delivery and the ball went on to hit the stumps.

Bangladeshi bowlers started off well as they conceded just 34 runs in the first six overs of the powerplay including the prize scalp of Guptill.

Earlier, Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim won the toss and chose to bowl against New Zealand.

Stuart Broad: ‘It looks a cracking wicket and we’re ready to go. We are playing with three seamers. The guys are coming in with a lot of confidence. It is about who plays well through these three weeks. We have to be right on top of our game against Afghanistan just like we have to against all other teams.’

Brendon McCullum: ‘It is a nice start to the tournament. It is good to contribute to a team win. I have batted at No.3 in the limited overs format and I am comfortable. The partnership with Franklin allowed us to play with bit more freedom in the later half. The wicket was a bit slippery on the top but it was a good wicket. It takes some time to get used to the lights here but it is a wonderful venue and we are lucky to be put up at this ground for some time.’

Brendon McCullum is the MoM for his 123.

Taylor: ‘When somebody scores 120+, it puts us in the box seat. Brendon played superbly. It probably skidded around and the ball did something in the lights. The short boundaries are straight and both Brendon and Franklin cleared them easily. The bowlers put their hands up and delivered. We took some hard chances but we can work a bit harder on our fielding.’

Rahim: ‘After winning the toss, we bowled well but Brendon McCullum showed his class. It was very difficult for the bowlers to contain him. We need to learn from our mistakes. It was a good wicket for the fast bowlers and we will come up with a new strategy.’

Taylor: ‘We would have bowled as well. Jacob Oram played well in the SLPL and we know the ground fairly well. Bracewell, Watling, Hira and Milne miss out.’

Rahim: ‘We will bowl first. The wicket looks dry and it will assist the spinners. The conditions are cloudy and with rain looming, we have a better chance while chasing. We have the best team after a period of 2-3 years. Reza and Abul Hasan miss out.’

Pitch Report: Wasim Akram says ‘The pitch is two-coloured. There is some grass on this wicket but it is rolled in. The pitch is expected to assist the spinners later on and the team winning the toss should bat first.’

It will be a David versus Goliath battle at the R Premadasa Stadium on Friday when defending champions England launch their World Twenty20 campaign against Afghanistan, who displayed enough fighting abilities in their opening fixture against India.

The minnows would surely be heartbroken following their 23-run defeat to India on Wednesday, but they can take heart from the fact that the former champions were made to toil hard.

The presence of Afghanistan in the island nation means they are one of the 12 best T20 teams in the world.

From fleeing their war-torn homeland, to staying in makeshift refugee camps and earning ODI status — the Afghan cricketers have indeed come a long way.

It’s been a huge leap for the impoverished South Asian nation to have made it to the World T20 for the second consecutive time.

“We have learned a lot. This is a learning phase for us.

From facing India and South Africa in the last World T20 to playing international matches against Australia and Pakistan, we have come a long way,” said Afghan captain Nawroz Mangal.

For Mangal, the most important thing is to prove people back home that “they belong to the world stage”.

Against India, while chasing 160, Afghan batsmen showed patches of brilliance in their stroke-making but sheer inexperience saw them get all out for 136 in 19.3 overs.

Mohammad Nabi cracked a 17-ball 31 while Karim Sadiq (26) and Mangal (22) also came up with handy contributions. Pacers Shapoor Zadran and Dawlat Zadran also bowled well in tandem, sharing three wickets between them.

However, Afghanistan’s sloppy fielding that resulted in them dropping as many as four catches, does not augur well for the side. Defying expectations, though, has become something of a habit for them.

On the other hand, England, looking to become the only team in the short history of T20 to have successfully defended the crown, will be on a high after posting wins against Australia and Pakistan, in their two warm-up games.

The English batsmen would however do well to pull up their socks if they are to fancy their chances of making the Super Eights as against Pakistan, they were shot out for a paltry 111 after opting to bat.

They made up for the batting failure by restricting Pakistan to 96 for nine on a bowler-friendly pitch at the P Sara Oval yesterday.

Danny Briggs, a 21-year-old left-arm spinner, claimed three wickets for 15 runs while seamer Jade Dernbach finished with three for 14, as Pakistan’s batsmen faltered against the pace-spin duo.

In batting, Luke Wright’s 38 off 36 balls was the only notable contribution as the other batsmen failed to apply themselves. England lost their last five wickets in the space of just eight deliveries.

In their previous warm-up game, England just about managed to secure a nine-run victory against Australia after overcoming Michael Hussey’s gutsy assault at Nondescripts CC.

Alex Hales, who has been called into the side as a replacement for Kevin Pietersen, looked good against the Aussies with his quick-fire half century.

England’s young guns — Luke Wright, Eoin Morgan and Jonny Bairstow — also warmed-up with useful contributions against their familiar foes.

England would like to keep the winning momentum going against Afghanistan, two days before the big-ticket encounter with India at the same venue on Sunday.

The Stuart Broad-led side would want its batsman to come good against the Afghans. A win will ensure a Super Eights berth for the champions even before they take on India in their second and final group league match.

A smooth start will certainly help the side hit a good rhythm, and the team management will have an idea about the performance of their preferred combination. (PTI)

Preview: Bangladesh vs New Zealand, Group D, T20 World Cup 2012

Two giant-killers who have a reputation of disturbing set calculations will be up against each other when New Zealand and Bangladesh clash in their opening Group D match of the World Twenty20 on Friday.

Both Bangladesh and New Zealand are known to raise the bar when it comes to performing at major ICC events and it would be interesting to see which of the two manages to go a notch higher in the one-on-one battle.

New Zealand’s build up to the event has been far from ideal as three of their key players, including inspirational former skipper Daniel Vettori and pacer Tim Southee, have been laid low by gastroenteritis.

The Kiwis’ warm-up campaign was also disappointing as they lost both their matches. It has been a far from ideal stay in the island nation so far for them but New Zealand’s cricketers are well known for fighting through the odds and put up creditable performances.

Led by an in-form and explosive Ross Taylor, the Kiwis seem a decent Twenty20 side with hard-hitting stars such Brendon McCullum and veteran all-rounder Jacob Oram.

In Kane Williamson, they have discovered a top-order batsman who can provide steady starts. But their major problem remains inconsistency and the failure to click as a unit.

Despite a seemingly balanced line-up on paper, the Kiwis have more often than not been guilty of throwing it away from strong positions.

Their bowling department is faced with similar problems but Vettori could prove to be their trump card on the turning tracks.

Bangladesh, on the other hand, are a sprightly mix which lost one and won one practice game heading into the big event.

Most of the team’s players are in their early 20s and what could work to their advantage is the comfort of the playing in home-like conditions.

The likes of Tamim Iqbal, Shakib Al Hasan and skipper Mushfiqur Rahim hold the key to their batting fortunes while Mashrafe Mortaza and Abdur Razzak will be leading the bowling department.

What the Tigers would be banking on is the element of surprise they bring in. Diminutive they might be in physical appearance but their lion-hearted approach to the game has won Bangladesh’s cricketers many an applause.

Given their similar fearless approach, it seems to be an interesting clash of the underdogs. (PTI)

Teams:

Bangladesh (probable): Abdur Razzak, Abul Hasan, Alok Kapali, Imrul Kayes, Mashrafe Mortaza, Mohammad Ashraful, Mushfiqur Rahim (c&wk), Nasir Hossain, Shahadat Hossain, Shakib Al Hasan, Tamim Iqbal.

New Zealand (probable): Ross Taylor (c), Doug Bracewell, James Franklin, Martin Guptill, Brendon McCullum (wk), Kyle Mills, Rob Nicol, Jacob Oram, Adam Milne, Daniel Vettori, Kane Williamson.
