Preview: India vs England, Group A, ICC T20 World Cup 2012

Posted: 22 Sep 2012 01:30 PM PDT

India’s listless bowling attack will aim to put up an improved performance ahead of the Super Eight stage when the team takes on England in its final group league encounter in the ICC World Twenty20 at Colombo on Sunday.

Both India and England are through to the ‘Super Eight’ but the contrasting manner of their respective victories certainly makes Stuart Broad and Co favourites ahead of a clash that has gained marquee status over the years.

While the Indian team management will be looking to plug the loopholes that appeared in the match against Afghanistan, England, after a facile 116-run win, will look to repeat that performance against a much better team.

The cause of concern for India across all formats has been their bowlers and it is no different in Twenty20.

33-year-old Zaheer Khan, who has manfully shouldered the burden as the leader of the attack, seems to have reached the fag end of his career and is increasingly looking pedestrian.

It is Zaheer’s poor show that has led to the entire Indian attack looking ordinary.

Add to it, skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s penchant for playing only four specialist bowlers always leaves the team in a high risk zone where it is expected that the part-timers need to perform above expectations.

The Mumbai-pacer has looked totally out of sorts in the net sessions so far.

Although it is too early to predict whether Zaheer will be benched considering that both Irfan Pathan and Laxmipathy Balaji have bowled better than him, but it can be said that he is playing the shortest format on borrowed time.

The 22-yard strip at the R Premadasa Stadium has been of great help for the pace bowlers but the ‘Men in Blue’ are more reliant on their spinners.

The big question, however, will be whether senior off-spinner Harbhajan Singh will get a chance in the playing XI. Knowing the perennial weakness of the English batsmen against spinners, Dhoni might just feel tempted to play the veteran of 98 Tests and 229 ODIs.

The batting line-up looks more or less settled but for Yuvraj Singh and Suresh Raina who have complaints regarding sore throat and stomach bug.

In case one among the two misses out, Manoj Tiwary is expected to replace that particular player. The performances of openers Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir will also be closely watched as the formidable duo hasn’t done anything noteworthy in recent times.

A blazing start by Sehwag will lessen the pressure on India’s ‘man of the moment’ Virat Kohli, who has been in dream form for the past one year.

It will be interesting to find out whether skipper Dhoni promotes himself up the order ahead of Rohit Sharma and Yuvraj Singh.

Yuvraj’s form so far hasn’t been great and the ‘comeback man’ certainly needs one innings of significance in order to feel comfortable.

One must not forget that it was against England that Yuvraj played one of the most memorable knock in Twenty20 cricket hitting Broad for six sixes.

The England team, on the other hand, bears a much settled look after their comprehensive win against Afghanistan was a testimony to that.

Luke Wright, who has always been considered as great potential, finally showed his mettle at the biggest stage with a fantastic unbeaten knock of 99.

That Wright can bat at No 3 — a position held by none other than Kevin Pietersen — and also bowls handy medium-pace gives Broad a chance to play around with his options.

Apart from Wright, the likes of Craig Kieswetter, Alex Hales, Jos Butler, Jonathan Bairstow can all hit the ball a fair distance which makes this team a handful proposition in this format.

With three potent pacers — the skipper himself, Steven Finn and Jade Dernbach — the bowling also bears a settled look. The two specialist spinners in Graeme Swann and Samit Patel would like to show that the Indian batsmen can be kept under tight leash.

In all there are ingredients of a perfect ‘Super Sunday’ before the actual battle begins.

Teams:

England (probable): Craig Kieswetter (wk), Alex Hales, Luke Wright, Eoin Morgan, Jonathan Bairstow, Jos Buttler, Samit Patel, Stuart Broad (c), Graeme Swann, Steven Finn, Jade Dernbach.

India (probable): Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag, Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh, Rohit Sharma, Suresh Raina, MS Dhoni(c&wk), Irfan Pathan, Ravichandran Ashwin, Lakshmipathy Balaji, Zaheer Khan

Preview: Pakistan vs New Zealand, Group D, ICC T20 World Cup 2012

Posted: 22 Sep 2012 12:30 PM PDT

Having won their tournament opener with consummate ease, a resurgent New Zealand side would be on a look out for a Super Eight berth when it takes on Pakistan in a Group D encounter here Sunday.

The Kiwis, led by a record 123-run knock by Brendon McCullum, registered a convincing victory over Bangladesh, but it would, by no means, be an easier preposition for Ross Taylor’s boys against the former champions. Continue reading below

Pakistan are far better equipped than their Asian neighbours, and with a formidable bowling line-up that includes the likes of offspinner Saeed Ajmal and speedster Umar Gul, they certainly have the necessary fire power to put a tab on the Kiwis.

Pakistan’s main worry, however, remain their inconsistent batting.

They were bundled out for a paltry 96 against England in their warm-up match and their victory against India in the first warm-up game came only after being revived from a precarious position by an extra-ordinary innings from Kamran Akmal.

Pakistan’s two most experienced campaigners in Shahid Afridi and Shoaib Malik have woefully been out of form and their top-order exhibits inexperience in the shortest format of the game.

Though, Malik played a handful unbeaten 37-run knock against India, Afridi just managed a naught and five in the two warm-up matches. He has also looked ordinary with the ball, which puts a lot of pressure on the Pakistani think-tank ahead of the crucial tie.

Young Umar Akmal’s form also remains a cause of concern for Hafeez. The 22-year-old has just managed 27 runs from his last four innings.

The senior of the Akmal brothers has also been good only in patches.

Pakistan’s strength, however, is their bowling unit, which boasts of both experience and aggression.

While Ajmal would hold the key for Pakistan against the Black Caps, who are well known to flounder against quality spin, Gul along with experienced Abdul Razzaq will be responsible to keep the New Zealand top-order in check.

Hafeez may well start with a spinner from one end given the Kiwis’ discomfort against the turning ball.

New Zealanders, on the other hand, need to work out on their opening combination.

They started with Rob Nicol and Martin Guptill in their warm-up tie against Australia, while James Franklin opened along side Guptill in the following two matches, including a warm-up game against South Africa.

But with McCullum having scored enough runs in the previous encounter, Taylor may well be tempted to resort back to Guptill-McCullum combination at the top.

The main worry for Taylor, like his Pakistani counterpart, is the side’s inconsistent run with the bat.

Kiwi batsmen have shown lack of application and with little time spend on the crease in the build-up to the championship, they certainly have their work cut-out against a quality Pakistani attack.

The other worry for Taylor remains the form of veteran Daniel Vittori. The tall left-arm spinner didn’t look his best against Bangladesh and it would remain to be seen how he comes up against Pakistan.

All in all, it would be an interesting contest as Pakistan would certainly not desire to go down in the “group of death”.

Probable XIs:
Pakistan: 1 Mohammad Hafeez (c), 2 Imran Nazir, 3 Nasir Jamshed, 4 Kamran Akmal (wk), 5 Umar Akmal, 6 Shahid Afrid, 7 Shoaib Malik, 8 Umar Gul, 9 Sohail Tanvir, 10 Saeed Ajmal 11 Mohd Sami

New Zealand: 1 Martin Guptill, 2 James Franklin, 3 Brendon McCullum (wk) 4 Ross Taylor (c), 5 Rob Nicol, 6 Kane Williamson, 7 Jacob Oram, 8 Daniel Vettori, 9 Tim Southee 10 Nathan McCullum 11 Kyle Mills

Australia beat West Indies by 17 runs (D/L) : T20 World Cup 2012

Posted: 22 Sep 2012 11:50 AM PDT

Australia qualified for the Super Eights round of the World Twenty20 by defeating the West Indies in a rain-interrupted group B match in Colombo on Saturday.

Scorecard | Australia vs West Indies Highlights

Australia, chasing a challenging target of 192, were 100-1 in 9.1 overs when heavy rain forced the match to be called off in front of 18,000 fans at the Premadasa stadium.

The Aussies, who were ahead of the par score of 83 at that stage, won by 17 runs, according to the Duckworth-Lewis method.

Australia’s second successive win — they beat Ireland by seven wickets on Wednesday — leaves the West Indies and Ireland battling for the other Super Eights spot from the group on Monday.

The weather ruined a keen finish with Australia edging ahead, needing 92 more from 65 balls with nine wickets in hand.

David Warner hit 28 in an opening stand of 30 with Shane Watson, before Mike Hussey joined Watson to add 70 in 42 balls for the unbroken second wicket.

Watson was unbeaten on 41 off 24 balls with three sixes and two boundaries. Hussey was on 28 with three fours and a six.

Earlier, the West Indies posted 191-8 following attacking half-centuries from Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels.

Left-handed Gayle smashed 54 off 33 balls and Samuels plundered 50 from 32 balls after the West Indies elected to bat in their first match of the tournament.

Sri Lankan fans were treated to a flurry of strokes as Gayle hit four sixes and five boundaries and Samuels chipped in with four sixes and three fours.

Australia rued a dropped catch at third man by Watson when Gayle was on four, as the opener pounded young fast bowler Pat Cummins for 18 runs in the fifth over.

When Gayle reached his half-century off 26 balls in the eighth over, the West Indies had moved to a promising 80-2.

He put on 39 in 23 balls for the second wicket with Johnson Charles (16) and 46 for the third with Samuels.

Watson avenged his error by holding a high return catch to dismiss Gayle off the first ball of the 11th over, but Samuels took over to destroy the Australian bowling.

Australia vs West Indies Post Match Presentation T20 World Cup 2012

Shane Watson: ‘It was a good day for us. It was disappointing to see that we gave away 190 plus runs. I dropped Gayle early and it was not a nice feeling. T20 can be a fickle game. I was happy sitting at the other end when Warner was batting. We both have our days and it is a privilege to see him batting. Michael Hussey also played wonderfully.’

Bailey: ‘There was good stuff and some ordinary stuff. The aim is to lessen the gap. The opposition had some hard hitters and we had to keep a calm head. We had to focus on the areas that we wanted to execute. Most of the runs scored by WI was in boundaries. Warner, Watson and Michael Hussey performed well but unluckily the rain came.’

Shane Watson is the MoM for his all-round display.

Sammy: ‘The weather took away the prospects of an exciting game. We started off well. The top order batsmen did their job. We knew that the Australians would come hard at us. We all know that Gayle hits a long ball and he has a plan. It is fantastic to see him play. Edwards started off well but the Australians came hard at us and we took a little long to respond.’

Having registered a comprehensive win in their World Twenty20 opener, Australia would aim to seal a Super Eight berth when they take on the flamboyant West Indies in a Group B encounter at the R Premadasa Stadium.

However, it won’t be an easy task for George Bailey’s boys as they are up against a formidable Caribbean side which boasts of big-hitting Chris Gayle and mystery spinner Sunil Narine in their ranks.

Led by Shane Watson’s heroics, with both bat and ball, Australia made easy work of an unpredictable Irish side as they cruised to an easy win in the campaign-opener. But come Saturday, the contest is definitely going to be more intense.

The Darren Sammy-led West Indian side has got enough arsenal in its armoury to derail any side.

However, the West Indian batsmen had failed to impress during their first warm-up game against Sri Lanka, in the absence of Gayle, and were scratchy in the second warm-up match against a resilient Afghan side, barring the Jamaican giant.

But that in no way gives Aussies the license to take them lightly.

West Indies’ prowess in the shortest format of the game is well known and Australia would undermine them at their own peril.

The Kangaroos, however, can take some heart from their recent performance against the Caribbeans.

They won comprehensively against Sammy’s boys in one of the two T20 games during their recent visit and came close to snatching the second one, losing by just 14 runs.

Australia can be in with a chance in tomorrow’s game as well if their bowlers manage to get the better of West Indies’ unsettled opening pair, which really has looked to be the soft belly of Sammy’s brigade.

Their discomfort against quality spin bowling is the other aspect which Bailey and Co. might try to exploit and with Xavier Doherty expected to be back for the game against the Calypso Charmers, Australia may well field two spinners tomorrow.

Veteran chinaman bowler, Brad Hogg, would be the other tweaker in the line-up.

The Australian batting looked good against Ireland and with Cameron White spending some time in the middle, they can boast of a formidable middle-order.

However, they will certainly come under scanner against Narine, who was recently adjudged the ICC Emerging Player of the Year for 2012.

Although the spinner has been ineffective against the Aussies on previous two meetings but that doesn’t lessen his aura.
