Harbhajan Singh helps India thrash England by 90 runs : T20 World Cup 2012

Posted: 23 Sep 2012 12:38 PM PDT

Off-spinner Harbhajan Singh made a memorable comeback as a India relied on a clinical all-round performance to thrash defending champions England by a whopping 90-run margin in their final group league match of the ICC World Twenty20 on Sunday.

Scorecard | India vs England Highlights

Put into bat, India posted a challenging 170 for four, riding on a superb unbeaten 55 from under-fire Rohit Sharma and useful contributions from Gautam Gambhir (45) and Virat Kohli (40).

The two comeback men — Harbhajan and Piyush Chawla — then spun a web around the England batsmen to bowl them out for a paltry 80 in 14.4 overs as they accounted six wickets for 25 runs in the eight overs between them.

Harbhajan had splendid figures of 4-12 with two wicket-maiden overs as England batsmen were totally clueless against the duo.

This was India’s biggest victory margin in terms of runs in any Twenty20 Internationals.

Playing his first international match in more than a year, Harbhajan got the ball to turn appreciably and also found the zip of the pitch. The off-breaks were turning viciously and the straighter one was equally lethal.

He bowled Eoin Morgan with a superb arm-ball and then got Tim Bresnan to sweep against the turn. Jose Butler got a classical off-break from the feisty off-spinner while Graeme Swann had no clue about the straighter one.

Chawla, who had figures of 2-13, got rid of Jonathan Bairstow with a superb googly while Craig Keiswetter who was top scorer with 35 could not read his leg-break.

Earlier, Rohit finally came good in an international match as he planned his innings to perfection, hitting an unbeaten 55 off 33 balls with five fours and a slashed six off Jade Dernbach.

An upper-cut off England captain Stuart Broad was also a treat to watch as the Mumbai youngster finally repaid the faith shown by his skipper who persisted with him despite repeated failures.

Gambhir also scored an useful 45 off 38 balls, hitting five boundaries in the process as the Indian side which have six specialist batsmen did admirably well against the English pace quartet.

The four-pronged pace attack of Broad, Tim Bresnan, Steven Finn and Dernbach used the short ball liberally to test Gambhir but he played the horizontal bat shot with a lot of control.

In-form Virat Kohli looked good during is 32-ball-40 as he set the tempo with a fluent knock.

The unlikely bowling hero for England turned out to be Graeme Swann who gave away only 17 runs in his four overs.

Gambhir started with a pull shot off Jade Dernbach and then steered the bowler past third man region for consecutive boundaries. Trying to find some form, the two shots worked wonder for the senior opener.

Dhoni’s gamble to open with Irfan Pathan in place of an injured Virender Sehwag flopped as the left-hander could only manage eight runs before a delivery from Steven Finn held its line after pitching and, in the process, knocked down the off-stump.

Kohli, who can do no wrong these days, started with an exquisite cover drive off Finn. The next boundary was a square drive off Broad while the third one came when he gave Tim Bresnan the charge to lift him over extra cover. The fourth boundary, an elegant on-drive off Finn, was though the best shot of the innings.

With Gambhir giving him good support, India crossed the 50-run mark within the Powerplay overs when the left-hander got one to bisect between the point and cover fielders.

It looked as if Kohli had grown special liking for Bresnan after he twice flicked the bowler over the mid-wicket region for boundaries.

However, it was a moment of indiscretion that brought about Kohli’s downfall. Watching Swann flight the ball, he gave charge but came too close to the pitch of the delivery and the resultant shot was pouched by Jonathan Bairstow at deep mid-wicket boundary.

Kohli’s 40 came off 32 balls and he hit six boundaries. The Indian 100 came up in the 14th over with Gambhir getting a boundary through the extra cover region.

Gambhir was finally out when he tried an expansive drive off a fuller delivery from Finn only to nick one to Craig Kieswetter behind stumps.

However, Rohit and Dhoni got together as they ran brilliantly between the wickets apart from finding the boundary balls, adding 47 runs in only 3.5 overs with the Mumbaikar being the dominant partner.

Harbhajan Singh: ‘First of all I would like to thank God. I have been dropped because of injuries and other boys were doing well. God is great and he gave me 4 wickets. For me it was an important game, I was not playing international game for a year. Taking wickets was much needed. This reward is for my mom and close people who have stuck to me. In T20 cricket, it’s important to just read the game and cut down the run-up. I was not able to control the ball. I bowled with a shorter run-up. This is everything for me, without playing for India, what I would do. Special thanks to the boys, who supported me when I was out. I would like to thank Sussex people as well. Hopefully I ca continue to’ do well.

Harbhajan Singh is the Man of the Match.

Dhoni: ‘ I think it was a fantastic performance after resting a few key players. We batted really well. We were not aiming too high as we had 5 bowlers and they responded well. It’s a difficult one, we have requested the senior players to try a few players. They responded well. Irfan is gutsy and he takes up challenges. The middle order remained the same. That was a good sign for us. Response from the spinners was brilliant. Our fast bowlers were not bowling really well. Let’s go back to our basics. We gave both spinners chances and now we have a problem of plenty. If the guys are responding, you need to give them some extra games. When you get desperate to perform, you don’t really do well. Rohit can play a variety of strokes. We will have to see the interest of the team. All the players who missed the games have won India a lot of players single-handedly.’

Broad: ‘ We were happy conceding 170. We did not get it right with the ball. I think we probably did not bowl tightly at the start. We were not as efficient as we should have been. We wanted to take a look at the balance of our side. It was worth having a look. We will reassess. The dots came when we started losing wickets. India closed the game really well. I have seen guys in the team playing spin extremely well. We had a bad day, but it does not affect us. We have had two pretty average performances and some really good performances. ‘

They need to work on their batting which has been inconsistent from quite some time. Shahid Afridi needs to get back in form. For New Zealand, the win against Bangladesh has provided lots of positives to the side. Brendon McCullum is back in form which is a huge advantage for a team who is called underdogs. Pakistan open World Cup campaign with a win over New Zealand

Posted: 23 Sep 2012 09:12 AM PDT

New Zealand’s batsmen picked up the pace way too late as Pakistan survived some tense moments before beating them by 14 runs in their Group D clash of the World Twenty20 on Sunday.

Scorecard | Pakistan vs New Zealand Highlights

Chasing 178, New Zealand, who beat Bangladesh in their lung-opener, played steady with the bat but it was a tad too slow for the format as they ended with 164 for nine.

Pakistan, on the other hand, put up a clinical performance with both the bat and ball to win the match comfortably.

After Nasir Jamshed’s maiden half century – a 35-ball 56 – and Mohammed Hafeez’s fine 43-run knock guided the team to a challenging total, their bowlers completed the job by drying up the runs for the Kiwi batsmen.

Brendon McCullum (32) showed some spark but he hardly found any aggressive support at the other end and was castled by Umar Gul after striking four boundaries and a six in a 31-ball effort.

Rob Nicol top-scored for the Kiwis with a 28-ball 33 that included three fours and a six. Skipper Ross Taylor also made a fine contribution, hitting three fours and a six in his 11-ball 26 before being run out.

The rest of the Kiwi innings did not feature any worthwhile contribution as Saeed Ajmal worked his magic to pick up four wickets in his four overs that cost 34 runs.

Earlier, electing to bat, Pakistan rode on Jamshed’s 35-ball 56 and some fine contributions from the openers — Mohammed Hafeez (43) and Imran Nazir (25) — to post a tough target for New Zealand.

The openers provided a steady start with a 47-run stand before Nazir’s entertaining cameo, that came off 16 deliveries, was ended by Tim Southee.

Nazir, who struck five boundaries during his brief stay at the crease, was sent back to the pavilion after he pushed the ball right back to Southee, who took the catch in his follow through.

Nazir’s departure, however, had little effect on the scoring rate which was steady at a little above nine an over as Hafeez and Jamshed combined for a 76-run partnership.

Jamshed was the aggressor in this stand even though Hafeez also managed a couple of fours and an equal number of sixes during his 38-ball stay in the middle.

Hafeez, who later bowled a miserly four-over spell that cost 15 runs, was castled by James Franklin while trying to swing across the line.

His dismissal slowed down the scoring for a while as Kamran Akmal also made his way back to the dugout with a 3-ball 3.

Jamshed, who struck two boundaries and four sixes, also departed soon when his attempt to loft Daniel Vettori towards the boundary ended up in the hands of Nathan McCullum.

The two wickets hurt Pakistan’s scoring rate and even though Umar Akmal (23) and Shoaib Malik (9 not out), who was surprisingly sent ahead of the aggressive Shahid Afridi, were aggressive between the wickets, the boundaries and sixes that rained at the start of the innings dried up towards the end.

Umar tied to make up for it but was dismissed by Jacob Oram just when he was beginning to pick up.

His big hit landed straight in the hands of Nathan at long on. Akmal managed three fours and six during his 15-ball cameo.

Once he finally arrived, Afridi rattled up 12 quick runs, including two fours, before being dismissed off the last ball.

Dhoni: ‘Virender Sehwag, Zaheer Khan, Manoj Tiwary and Ravichandran Ashwin are not playing today. We will need to execute our plans, every match from now onwards are going to be tough games. Nasir Jamshed: ‘My captain said you play your normal game and I did just that. I played it ball by ball and wanted to be technically sound. I’m learning a lot of things from the fielding coach and improving myself.’

Hafeez: ‘We were under pressure towards the end. The bowlers held their nerve to help us through. Thanks to the batsmen. Nasir played an excellent innings today. He has the talent and he showed it today. We got the total we wanted to and the bowlers did their job later on. The batsmen have to score some runs for out bowlers. The boys are responding well to me as a captain.’

Ross Taylor: ‘We dropped a few catches. It was a good game. We learnt a lot and hope to do well in the next game. We wanted the left-right combination. When something like that comes off, you are a genius. On other days you are not so.’

We showed great character in the last series against Australia but we need to show character with the bat. I am not worried about Afridi as he plays his natural game. Abdul Razzak, Mohammad Sami and Raza Hasan miss out.’

Ross Taylor: ‘This pitch looks a lot drier. The Bangladesh team had a lot of spinners but we countered them well. Guptill is out and Milne replaces him. Brendon can play all around the wicket and he is a special player. All the other players have to step up.’

Pitch Report: Ian Chappell says ‘The pitch is hard and there is a little bit of both dry and green grass. There are some cracks and the bowlers might get good carry. There will be a bit of uneven bounce but it is a good wicket.’

Indian team have been good with bat especially Virat Kohli has been in splendid form but Sehwag and Gambhir also need to score runs if India needs to get through the semi’s. England on the other hand have been in superb form. In their first game against Afghanistan they clearly showed they not going to take any game easy and will come on hard against each and every team. This clearly shows the inconsistency in Pakistan batting attack. Pakistan bowling have been good with Saeed Ajmal being the key. For New Zealand, they have showed their potential in the first game.
