Richard Levi wins ICC Twenty20 International Performance of the Year

Posted: 15 Sep 2012 11:07 AM PDT

South African batsman Richard Levi won the ICC Twenty20 International Performance of the Year on Saturday in recognition of his 51-ball 117 not out innings against New Zealand.

On Feb 19, during the Proteas’ against New Zealand in Hamilton, Levi on his debut tour for South Africa smashed his way to 117 not out with a swashbuckling innings that included five fours and 13 sixes.

Levi took just 45 balls to reach his century, making him the current record holder for the fastest century in T20I cricket, ahead of former holder Chris Gayle who managed the feat in 50 balls.

Upon collecting the award the 24-year-old from Johannesburg said: “I don’t remember much of the innings but I regularly get reminded of it. When any sportsman performs well, with T20 cricket it either comes off or it doesn’t and for me it came off that day.” (IANS)

Daniel Vettori wins ICC Spirit of Cricket Award 2012

Posted: 15 Sep 2012 07:58 AM PDT

New Zealand’s Daniel Vettori has won the ICC Spirit of Cricket Award 2012 at the LG ICC Awards in Colombo.

During New Zealand’s first Test against Zimbabwe in November 2011 in Bulwayo, Zimbabwe required 64 runs with five wickets in hand to win the Test. Regis Chakabva played a ball from the New Zealand spinner to mid-on, however, during his follow through Vettori proceeded to get in the way of Malcolm Waller, at the non-striker’s end, preventing the Zimbabwean from running.

Vettori immediately held up his hand to the wicketkeeper, Reece Young, to indicate there had been a collision, accidentally which hindered the non-striker. As this happened, Chakabva by this point was too far down the wicket to get back to his crease in time, the bails are whipped off at the striker’s end but New Zealand elected not to appeal because of Vettori’s admittance to blocking Waller’s path.

The gesture was done with the minimum of fuss by the former Black Caps’ captain and was deemed by the Emirates Elite Panels of ICC Match Referees and Umpires as well as the ten Full Member Test captains as being the best illustration of the Spirit of Cricket out of all the other nominees.

Upon receiving the award, Vettori said: “It was the right thing to do at the time and we as a team try and play with the right spirit of cricket. It’s hard to define the spirit of cricket, but go out on the field with the general mind sight to play the game in the right way and always in the right frame of mind.

“I still think in trying to win a world tournament you have to try and win it in the right way and always with the spirit of cricket in mind.”

Vettori beat off competition from South Africa’s AB de Villiers and Jacques Kallis as well as Mohammad Hafeez of Pakistan and West Indies’ Kieron Pollard.

Virat Kohli – ICC ODI Cricketer of the Year 2012

Posted: 15 Sep 2012 07:55 AM PDT

India’s Virat Kohli has been named ICC ODI Cricketer of the Year 2012 at the LG ICC Awards in Colombo.

During the performance period, he played 31 ODIs and compiled 1,733 runs at an average of 66.65, including eight centuries and six half-centuries. His highest score, 183, came against Pakistan in the Asia Cup on 18 March 2012.

The independent voting academy of 32 highly credentialed cricket experts put Kohli first, ahead of such talented and in-form players as Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara and Lasith Malinga as well as Kohli’s India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

Kohli said upon receiving the honour: “I think I have tried to keep things as simple as possible and it’s worked for me on the field. This year has been a learning curve along the way from the seniors in the team. It’s been an all-round effort and I’m very happy to have won this award.

“It’s always nice to be recognized by the ICC and it’s a great feeling and it’s the first time I’ve won one of these awards and it feels great.”

Australia crush New Zealand in T20 World Cup 2012 warm-up match

Posted: 15 Sep 2012 02:30 AM PDT

A spectacular batting implosion by New Zealand against Australia's bowlers saw it crash to a massive 56-run defeat in what was the first warm-up fixture for both teams ahead of the ICC World Twenty20.

The early blows for Australia were struck by the pacemen, with Brad Hogg then taking 3 for 23 to help bowl New Zealand out for 83. The New Zealand batsmen haven't been convincing against spinners or pacers of late, and the latest outing wouldn't have given them any reassurance.

Only Ross Taylor (22 off 20), Doug Bracewell (10 not out off 8) and Kane Williamson (17 off 33) reached double figures for New Zealand, who had gotten off to a nightmare start, being reduced to 8 for 3 in the third over after Australia had made 139 for 6.

Each of Shane Watson, Clint McKay and Pat Cummins struck in the first three overs, as New Zealand never recovered from its start.

Earlier, Australia's innings progressed in fits and starts after it was put in to bat, with David Warner providing the early fireworks. Warner hit 24 off 14 balls, but after his departure, the run-rate slowed with Daniel Vettori, Adam Milne and Nathan McCullum controlling the middle-overs well for New Zealand.

A late flourish by Matthew Wade and Daniel Christian saw 42 runs scored in the final four overs, which eventually proved too much for New Zealand.

Irfan, Balaji strikes, India beat Sri Lanka in T20 World Cup warm-up match

Posted: 15 Sep 2012 01:51 AM PDT

Apart from the fact that Gautam Gambhir suffered a blow to the right hand off a Lasith Malinga screamer and had to retire hurt, things mostly went right for India in its warm-up match against Sri Lanka on Saturday (September 15).

Batting first, India made 146 for 5 after a top-order wobble and then bowled Sri Lanka out for 120 to seal a confidence-boosting 26-run win in the match played at the P Sara Oval in Colombo.

India won the toss, chose to bat, but then, off the third ball of the very first over, saw Gambhir leaving the field. Gambhir later underwent x-rays, but nothing serious was detected.

It was all Sri Lanka after that as India sank to 51 for 4 by the ninth over, with Nuwan Kulasekara sending back Suresh Raina (12) and Virender Sehwag (12), while Angelo Mathews accounted for Virat Kohli (8) and Rangana Herath had Yuvraj Singh (11) stumped by Kumar Sangakkara.

The innings took flight courtesy determined batting efforts from Rohit Sharma, who hit four fours and a six in a 26-ball 37, and captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who was superb in an unbeaten 55 from 42 balls, studded with four fours and three sixes.

The duo ensured India had a respectable total on the board.

The Sri Lanka reply never really took off with Irfan Pathan and L Balaji running amok. Irfan returned figures of 5 for 25 while Balaji bowled his 3.3 overs for 3 for 28.

A number of the Lankan batsmen got starts, with Sangakkara scoring 32 from 32 balls, Lahiru Thirimanne scoring 24 from 27 and Jeevan Mendis getting his 26 runs from 22 balls. But as those numbers prove, scoring runs was tough. And with wickets falling regularly, Sri Lanka eventually folded up for 120 in 19.3 overs.

This was Sri Lanka's last warm-up match, while India will play Pakistan in their last warm-up game on Monday (September 17).
