India beat Afghanistan in T20 World Cup 2012 opener #IndvsAfg

Posted: 19 Sep 2012 11:50 AM PDT

Comeback man Yuvraj Singh provided three crucial breakthroughs but India were far from convincing as they launched their ICC World Twenty20 campaign with a scrappy 23-run victory over minnows Afghanistan.

Scorecard | India vs Afghanistan Highlights

Put into bat, it was man of the match Virat Kohli’s half-century and an useful contribution of 38 from Suresh Raina which helped India reach a decent target of 159 for five in 20 overs.

In reply, Afghanistan batsmen showed patches of brilliance in their strokemaking but their sheer inexperience saw them get all out for 136 in 19.3 overs.

The bravehearts from Afghanistan can hold their heads high as they only went down after putting up a stiff resistance against a scratchy Indian team.

After getting a wicket with his very first delivery, Yuvraj in his second spell provided back-to-back breakthroughs dismissing dangerous looking Karim Sadiq (26) and Asghar Stanikzai as Afghans, from a comfortable 75 for two, were suddenly left tottering at 75 for four and never really were in the match after that.

Yuvraj’s final figures read three for 24 partly due to the couple of sixes he was hit in his final over.

It was Yuvraj and Ravichandran Ashwin with figures of two for 20 who applied pressure under which the opposition batsmen finally gave in.

Laxmipathy Balaji finished it in the end with figures of three for 19 but he was also not at his best.

But what should worry the Indians is the ease with which some of the Afghan batsmen played the Indian trio of seamers.

Mohammed Shahzad hit a helicopter shot of Zaheer Khan while Mohammed Nabi lifted him straight over long-off. The veteran medium pacer has looked completely out of sorts of late, leaking away 32 runs in three overs.

Earlier, it was Kohli’s dream run in international cricket that enabled India reach 159 for five despite poor show from senior pros like Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag and Yuvraj Singh. The trio missed out on an opportunity to put up a big score under their belt before the marquee game against England.

It was mainly due to Kohli’s 39-ball 50 and some lusty blows from Raina that helped India set a decent if not an impressive target against the minnows.

Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni provided the final flourish ending the innings with a four and six of the last two deliveries to remain unbeaten on 18 from nine balls.

The Indians were also helped by some poor effort on the field by Afghanistan as they dropped as many as four catches ? with Raina being dropped on two occasions.

With this innings, Kohli has now completed a hat-trick of T20 international half centuries having crossed 50 against Sri Lanka and New Zealand in the two earlier international matches.

His standout shot remains the six he hit off medium pacer Gulbodin Naib. With minimum feet movement, Kohli just lifted the bowler straight and the ball traveled a distance of 93 metres.

Kohli’s partnerships of 46 runs each with Yuvraj and Raina for the third and fourth wicket respectively helped India cross the 150-run mark.

But it all started with Gambhir’s old habit of playing away from his body and it cost him dearly as he dragged back an innocuous delivery from Shapoor Zadran onto his middle stump. The left-hander made 10.

Sehwag was dismissed by a peach of delivery from Shapoor.

The ball pitched on the off-stump and moved a shade as the batsmen tentatively played at it and the resultant nick was gleefully accepted by wicketkeeper Mohammed Shahzad. He managed only eight.

Yuvraj’s first shot was a splendid one as he lifted Shapoor in a copybook manner over straight boundary. However the comeback man was not in his element today.

Once the two spinners – offie Karin Sadiq and left-arm spinner Mohamed Nabi — were introduced into the attack, Yuvraj found it difficult to score runs.

On his personal score of 17 and team’s total of 62, Yuvraj tried to scoop an overpitched delivery from Nabi but offered a return catch which the bowler failed to latch onto.

However he failed to cash in on this gift as he was soon caught by Shapoor at short third-man trying to cut a Sadiq off-break. He scored a painstaking 18 of 20 balls.

Kohli, on the otherhand, was stroking freely but did get the benefit due to profligate Afghanistan fielders

On 33, he lifted Sadiq towards widish long-on and to his delight found Shamiuallah Shenwari drop the easiest of chances.

Kohli was finally holed out in the deep immediately after he completed his 50 but Raina along with Dhoni hit some lusty blows to prop up India’s total. (PTI)

Kohli: ‘It’s always good to get a start. I had a decent knock in the warm up game as well. It’s always tough to play against a team which has nothing to lose. They could just go out and express themselves. I just wanted to stick through the initial period and then go after the bowling. The passsion for the game is the secret behind my consistency I guess.

Kohli is the Man of the Match

Mahendra Singh Dhoni: ‘It’s important to get off to a winning start. The format balances the teams. If one of their batsmen had got going it could have been different. We have to improve in a lot of areas to be frank. Otherwise there will be pressure on the batsmen to score 20 runs more than the par score. We are playing 1 bowler short so the part timers have to do well. But if the main bowlers are not doing well, then it’s a big problem. People talk about 5 bowlers, but the bowlers on the day should do well. We can’t take any side lightly. This was a great example. ‘

Mangal: ‘Definitely it was a good game for the boys. We could have done better. Our shot selection was a bit poor. The fielding was poor, we could have done better. But we restricted the mighty batting line up to 160, but we couldn’t chase it down. ‘

India team have a good batting order with Sehwag and Gambhir on top. Virat Kohli has been in a superb form and have been consistent. Afghanistan need to make a plan against the Indian batting line-up if they want to win this one. Another thing that Afghanistan need to take care of is the spin bowling attack. Nawroz Mangal: ‘We’ll bowl first. It is a big match today. Hope we do well.’

Irfan Pathan: ‘In practice matches you cannot concentrate much on winning or losing. It is about what you get out of the game. My strength is good, rhythm is good. Happy the way it’s going. Australia beat Ireland by 7 wickets: T20 World Cup 2012

Posted: 19 Sep 2012 07:06 AM PDT

Spearheaded by an awesome all-round show by Shane Watson, Australia managed to earn a comprehensive seven-wicket victory over Ireland in their opening World Twenty20 match on Wednesday.

Scorecard | Australia vs Ireland Highlights

Watson, who scored an impressive 30-ball 51 runs, played an instrumental role to lead Australia’s run chase as he hit three sixes and five boundaries.

Chasing a 124-run target, Australia reached the target in 15.1 overs with 29 balls to spare as Cameron White and George Bailey remained unbeaten on 22 and 6 runs respectively.

Australia lost Michael Hussey (10) and David Warner in their run-through to their victory against Ireland.

Warner scored 26 and was dismissed when was caught on the leg side after putting up an impressive 60-run opening partnership with Watson.

Warner and Watson got the Aussies off to a flying start in their run chase as the Aussies reached the 50-run mark in the sixth over.

After a great bowling display by Watson, who grabbed three wickets as fired-up Australia restricted Ireland to 123-7, the Aussie stalwart punished the Irish bowlers with a series of 4s and 6s.

Warner on the other hand looked immaculate with his aggressive batting display to torment the Irish bowlers as he became the third batsman to reach 1000 runs in T20 international cricket.

Kevin O’Brien top-scored for Ireland with 35, adding 52 for the fifth wicket with elder brother Niall (20) after Ireland had slipped to 33-4 by the eighth over.

Australia, who had briefly slipped below Ireland in the T20 rankings earlier this month, looked determined to teach the non-Test nation a cricketing lesson in the first ever T20 clash between the two sides.

The slump started with the first ball of the innings, which skipper William Porterfield hooked down fine-leg’s throat to the great delight of bowler Watson.

In-form batsman Paul Stirling was caught at third man off Mitchell Starc and Ed Joyce holed out to mid-off against Glenn Maxwell after making 16.

Left-arm spinner Brag Hogg, the oldest player in the tournament at 41, struck with his second delivery when he trapped Gary Wilson leg-before for five.

The O’Brien brothers boosted the total with their partnership, before both fell in the space of four balls from Watson.

The West Indies are the third team in the group, from which two will qualify for the Super Eights round.

Watson: ‘We knew that it was an important game. I have been thinking about bowling the first over for a couple of days and I thought it would be nice to start off with a short ball. I felt good while batting. You have to let Warner play his natural game and when his mind is free, he can be devastating.’

Shane Watson is the MoM for his 3/26 and for his fifty.

Bailey: ‘We started very well. Watson started off well with the ball and he finished it well with the bat. The short ball was used nicely. As the tournament progresses, the pitches will get slow and low. Watson can improve a bit on his fielding but he is an outstanding player. We need to improve our fielding.’

Porterfield: ‘The batting was not great. We were not surprised with the pitch but one has to expect such pitches in this tournament. We were 40-50 runs short. We have some good players at the top of the order. We are confident that we can bounce back against the West Indies. ‘

Preview: India vs Afghanistan, Group A, T20 World Cup 2012

Indian team will face-off Afghanistan in first match of the T20 World Cup 2012. India team has to decide on the team combination, whether they would like to go with 4 or 5 bowling attack. India lost their last warm-up game mainly because of their bowling and the faster they take decission they better it will be for them.

A win in the first game will definitely ensure a Super Eights birth but under-estimating Afghanistan can be risk as well. India won the first edition of T20 World Cup but they never came back well in the format after that.

India have met Afghanistan once in the last year World Cup where they beat Afghanistan by seven wickets. So for India this can be an easy start for the tournament before they face the last year Champions England.

India team still in dilemma of whether to go with five specialist bowlers or opt for the additional batsman, considering that bowling in the death overs has been a worry. But skipper MS Dhoni doesn’t like to play much with the order and likes to give time to his team to perform. In a pre match talks he has indicated that the team will go with the four specialist bowlers and will rely on part-time bowlers for the fifth bowler.

India batting order seems to be solid with Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir leading from the top and then Virat Kohli, who is in super form followed by Yuvraj Singh and skipper MS Dhoni himself. Spinners will definitely play a key role for India. So a lot of pressure will be on Ravichandran Ashwin and Harbhajan Singh who joins the time after being left out for a while.

For Afghanistan, they have played quite well in the warm-up game against Sri Lanka A but lost the game against West Indies. Asghar Stanikzai has been consisten in both the match which is a positive thing for Afghanistan. Afghnaistan surely have proved themselves twice to play this tournament. They have potential and the cricket is growing in there country.

There are some key player in Afghanistan to look upon. It has talented batsmen like Mohammad Shahzad, who has scored three one-day international centuries and three half-centuries in Twenty20 internationals and maintains a strike rate of 112. Karim Sadiq has two one-day international hundreds.

Legspin bowler Samiullah Shenwari has 28 one-day international wickets and nine Twenty20 international wickets, good numbers for a bowler who has had little international exposure.

Its an interesting side for Afghanistan and surely they are more matured in the game now. India can’t take them lightly and have to play the best to win the first game. So after talking about both team one would say India are surely favorites for the game but Afghanistan definitely can’t be taken for granted. So just sit back and enjoy the exciting match of the tournament with us.

Languishing at the bottom half of the ranking table, Australia would like to start their World Twenty20 campaign on a positive note when they take on “giant killers” Ireland in their tournament opener on Wednesday.

Australia has so far failed to tame the shortest format of the game and it will be a test of their character when they face William Porterfield-led Irish side, who are well known to spring a few surprises at the big stage.

Though, they have just one victory to their credit against an ICC Full Member side in the T20, their unpredictability can well be gouged by a thumping win over England in the 50-over World Cup last year at Bangalore.

Ireland’s World Cup triumph over Pakistan in 2007 World Cup in the Caribbean is yet another example of their ability to surprise big teams.

The Irish men have won both their warm-up matches in the build up to the championship and interestingly, they were also briefly ahead of Australia on the ranking list earlier this month, something that Kangaroos will be wary of.

Having lost to minnows Zimbabwe in the same championship in 2007 and being bundled out at the group stage in the 2009 edition, Australia will have a tough task at hands on Wednesday.

“I will only rest easy when that game’s (against Ireland) passed,” Australia’s coach, Mickey Arthur, said.

“That’s not through fear of failure. They have been a giant-killer and they’re playing with a quite nice bit of freedom. Any team in this competition can win if they have a good day,” he added.

Australia warmed-up for the campaign with a comprehensive win over New Zealand, but their nine-run loss to defending champions England in their second warm-up match, courtesy to some wayward bowling from their speedsters, would be a cause of worry for skipper George Bailey.

Bailey would definitely like the young quicks in Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins to be more disciplined and he would also expect a better show with the ball from experienced Shane Watson and Daniel Christian.

With Xavier Doherty unavailable for the first match, Australia will bank on the slow left-arm chinaman of Brad Hogg to put curbs on Irish scoring.

With Watson and David Warner opening the innings and Michael Hussey and Bailey leading the middle-order, Australian batting line-up certainly exhibits a settled look but the absence of their most experienced T20 campaigner in David Hussey is still debatable.

The younger Hussey has been sidelined from the team following a streak of poor performances. His inability to finish matches in recent past has only added to his woes.

The 35-year-old veteran of 189 T20 games has been replaced with young Glenn Maxwell. The Victorian all-rounder has shown a lot of promise, but it remains to be seen whether he is able to fill the big shoes of David Hussey or not.

Irish batsmen, on the other hand, have been in good nick with opener Paul Stirling leading the charge with a quick-fire 71 off just 41 balls against Bangladesh and experienced Neil O’Brien coming good against Zimbabwe.

Ireland also boasts of big hitting Kevin O’Brien, who registered the fastest ODI century in the 2011 World Cup to see his team through against England. The team will further be buoyed by the presence of left-arm spinner George Dockrell, who was recently adjudged the Associate Player of year 2011.

The Irish quicks will, however, be led by experienced Boyd Rankin along with Alex Cusack. Porterfield may also play veteran Trent Johnston to add solidity to the side.(PTI)

Teams:

Australia (probable): George Bailey (c), Shane Watson, David Warner, Cameron White, Brad Hogg, David Hussey, Michael Hussey, Clint McKay, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Starc, Matthew Wade (wk)

Ireland (probable): William Porterfield (c), Alex Cusack, George Dockrell, Trent Johnston, Nigel Jones, Ed Joyce, Tim Murtagh, Kevin O’Brien, Niall O’Brien (wk), Boyd Rankin, Paul Stirling,
