Pakistan vs Australia 1st T20 Post Match Presentation Dubai 2012

Bailey: We were outplayed. Our bowling wasn’t too bad but it’s hard to tell when you put up only 89 on the board. We’re working towards the T20 World Cup, this series is the first step towards that.

Hafeez: Great team effort. The bowlers did a great job and the batsmen finished it off. The bowlers stuck to their plans. Raza bowled well on debut and the other bowlers did well too. The players showed great character after losing the ODI series.

Hafeez is the Man of the Match

Pakistan (Playing XI): Mohammad Hafeez(c), Nasir Jamshed, Umar Akmal, Imran Nazir, Shoaib Malik, Kamran Akmal(w), Abdul Razzaq, Sohail Tanvir, Raza Hasan, Umar Gul, Saeed Ajmal

Australia (Playing XI): David Warner, Shane Watson, Matthew Wade(w), Michael Hussey, David Hussey, George Bailey(c), Glenn Maxwell, Cameron White, Ben Hilfenhaus, Pat Cummins, Xavier Doherty

Hafeez: We would like to bowl first. Australia has a good batting side, so we want to chase instead of letting them do so. Jamshed comes in to the side today. This series is good preperation for the upcoming T20 World Cup.

Bailey: I am happy we lost that toss actually. There might be some dew but apparently they had the ground covered well. Shane Watson, White and Maxwell have been included to the side today. Maxwell had a good ODI series and it will be nice if he can carry that form into the T20s. We don’t think about par scores.

Australia, after clinching the ODI series 2-1 against Pakistan, will now set their sights on the three-match Twenty20 series starting on Wednesday. Both the teams, especially Australia, are taking this as a practice series ahead of the upcoming ICC World Twenty20 in September.

It has been a challenging tour for Australia considering the hot and humid conditions in Sharjah, but they adapted and performed well. They aren’t the clear favourite going by their No. 9 ranking in the format, but would very much like to turn this around and prove their detractors wrong.

Both teams are balanced in every department, especially with the comeback of some key players. For Pakistan, Mohammad Hafeez will be opening the innings and could be partnered by Imran Nazir or Nasir Jamshed. Moreover, their batting goes deep with the return of Abdur Razzaq and preceded by Umar Akmal, Shoaib Malik, Shahid Afridi, Azad Shafiq and Kamran Akmal in the middle order.

The pace-bowling attack will be taken care of by Umar Gul, who would like to make an impact after being ignored for the one-dayers. However, for the second pacer spot there would be a tussle between Mohammad Sami and Sohail Tanvir. In recent times there has been a change in the trend, as spin bowling is winning matches for Pakistan. Saeed Ajmal would be leading the pack and ably supported by Afridi and Hafeez.

On the other hand, Australia might go into the series as underdogs, but they have few match-winners in their squad. With the return of Shane Watson, their batting and bowling gets a fillip. Watson, who makes a return to the team after a calf injury would join forces with David Warner at the top of batting order. Both the Hussey brothers and George Bailey give stability to the middle order, moreover Glenn Maxwell in the third ODI has shown what he is capable of.

In spinner friendly conditions, young pacer Mitchell Starc has been the find for Australia. But there are doubts with the fitness of Pat Cummins and Ben Hilfenaus might get the nod. The star attraction would be the 41-year-old Brad Hogg, who with his experience can prove to be a big plus.

Probable XIs:
Pakistan: 1 Mohammad Hafeez (capt), 2 Imran Nazir/Nasir Jamshed, 3 Asad Shafiq, 4 Shoaib Malik, 5 Umar Akmal, 6 Shahid Afridi, 7 Kamran Akmal, 8 Abdur Razzaq, 9 Saeed Ajmal, 10 Umar Gul, 11 Sohail Tanvir/Mohammad Sami

Australia: 1 Shane Watson, 2 David Warner, 3 George Bailey, 4 Michael Hussey, 5 David Hussey, 6 Michael Wade, 7 Glenn Maxwell, 8 Daniel Christian, 9 Brad Hogg, 10 Mitchell Starc, 11 Pat Cummins/Ben Hilfenaus

Preview: England vs South Africa 5th ODI Nottingham 2012

The second leg of South Africa’s English summer is set for a battling finish at Trent Bridge where Alastair Cook and AB de Villiers’ men will square off for the final ODI that has a series win on offer for England and a chance to share the NatWest Trophy for South Africa.

Ian Bell’s 137-ball 88 and offspinner James Tredwell’s 3 for 35 ensured England go into the decisive ODI with an unassailable 2-1 lead, but in most likelihood without the consistent Jonathan Trott. Trott, who scored 71 at The Oval and 48 at Lord’s, is a doubtful started at Trent Bridge due to the hand injury sustained against Dale Steyn on Sunday, even though x-rays have ruled out a fracture. He has been the stabilising force behind England’s two wins and forged decisive partnership with Eoin Morgan and Bell.

Trott’s consistency has also shielded Cook’s cold response to the South African pace battery, which has restricted the hosts’ opening partnerships in the last three ODIs to 0, 14 and 2. England have recalled the Somerset wicketkeeper-batsman Jos Buttler as cover for Trott, but he is highly unlikely to play with the in-form Jonny Bairstow rubbing his hands for such an opportunity. England, who are now ensured to go into 2013 as the No. 1 ODI team, are unlikely to drop Ravi Bopara as he made up for his batting failure with a useful 2 for 34 at Lord’s.

South Africa’s problems surprisingly, and not so surprisingly, revolve around their batting. No batsman has posted a half-century in the last two games since the run-fest led by Hashim Amla’s 150 in Southampton. Other than openers Amla and Graeme Smith, none of the batsmen, including de Villiers, has been able to deliver. The resultant loss of momentum in the middle of the innings has cost South Africa two losses and a chance to win the series.

The absence of Jacques Kallis, rested for the series, has left a gaping hole in the visitors’ batting line-up. The idea to bring back the world’s best allrounder fresh into the World Twenty20 is also giving South Africa a view of life without Kallis, but de Villiers isn’t taking that as an excuse. “When you have inexperience in your team, you need the senior players to take control, including myself. Getting out for 20s and 30s isn’t good enough at this level; it’s as simple as that,” he had said after the Lord’s defeat.

There are no such glaring issues with the South African bowling, but it won’t be a surprise if they chose to bring in one of the Morkel brothers in place of Ryan McLaren, with allrounder Albie adding meat to batting and Morne an extra edge to bowling.

Probable XIs:
England: 1 Alastair Cook (capt), 2 Ian Bell, 3 Jonathan Trott/Jonny Bairstow, 4 Ravi Bopara, 5 Eoin Morgan, 6 Craig Kieswetter (wk), 7 Samit Patel, 8 James Tredwell, 9 James Anderson, 10 Steven Finn, 11 Jade Dernbach

South Africa: 1 Graeme Smith, 2 Hashim Amla, 3 Dean Elgar, 4 AB de Villiers (capt/wk), 5 JP Duminy, 6 Faf du Plessis, 7 Ryan McLaren/Albie Morkel, 8 Wayne Parnell, 9 Robin Peterson, 10 Dale Steyn, 11 Lonwabo Tsotsobe
