South Africa crush Zimbabwe by 10 wicket win : T20 World Cup 2012

Posted: 20 Sep 2012 11:21 AM PDT

South Africa produced a clinical performance to knock Zimbabwe out of the ICC World Twenty20 with a comfortable 10-wicket victory in a lop-sided Group C match here today.

Scorecard | South Africa vs Zimbabwe Highlights

Zimbabwe crashed out of the event after slumping to their second defeat in the tournament having lost to hosts Sri Lanka by 82 runs in the tournament opener.

As expected, both Sri Lanka and South Africa, who face each other in their last group match here on Saturday, have progressed to the Super Eight stages from the pool.

Opening their campaign in tournament, South Africa first restricted Zimbabwe to 93 for eight after inviting the opposition to bat and then piled up the runs without breaking a sweat.

Richard Levi smashed his way to a 44-ball unbeaten 50 while Hashim Amla remained not out on 32 from 33 balls as South Africa chased down the target with 44 balls to spare.

With South Africa just needing six to win, Zimbabwe squandered the only chance of picking up a wicket the got in the match when Vusi Sibanda dropped Amla at point of Kyle Jarvis.

Earlier, Jacques Kallis stole the show with four wickets as a pace inspired South Africa restricted minnows Zimbabwe to the paltry total.

Kallis utilised the lively pitch at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium to perfection and scalped four wickets for 15 runs to rock the Zimbabwe innings.

He was ably supported by pace duo of Morne Morkel (2/16) and Dale Steyn (1/9), who produced a lethal opening spell to dismantle the Zimbabweans.

Zimbabwe’s struggle can be ascertained from the fact that only two of its batsmen — Craig Ervine (37) and Stuart Matsikenyeri (11) — managed double figures.

Put into bat, Zimbabwe found the going tough as Morne did the early damage by picking up two wickets in his first two overs.

Morne first went through the defence of opener Sibanda in the second over and then came back to induce an edge from Zimbabwe skipper Brendan Taylor which was gleefully accepted by South Africa captain AB de Vielliers.

Morne’s brother Albie also found himself among wickets in his opening over when he had Hamilton Masakadza caught by Levi at mid-on as Zimbabwe slumped to 16 for three.

Top-scorer Ervine and Matsikenyeri then tried hard to resurrect the innings with a fighting 35-run fourth wicket partnership before Jacques Kallis’ double blow in the 11th over put paid to their efforts.

In the fourth ball of the 11th over, Kallis first accounted for Matsikenyeri, who hit one straight to Robin Peterson at extra cover, and then had Elton Chigumbura plumb in front of the wicket with his next delivery.

But a hat-trick eluded the veteran South African as Graeme Cremer managed to keep the next ball away.

Kallis returned to the attack in the later stages of the innings to pick up two more wickets — Cremer and Ervine — both of whom perished in identical fashion giving away simple catches to De Villiers behind the stumps.

In between pace spearhead Dale Steyn also registered his name in the scoreboard, dismissing Prosper Utseya who was brilliant caught by a diving de Villiers to his left.

Toss: South Africa have won the toss and elected to field

de Villiers: ‘Albie is our all-rounder, he is fit and playing. Quite a few guys were down with upset tummies 2 days back but all are ready now.’

Taylor: ‘We would have bowled first. We’re a far better side than what we showed in the first game. We’ve regrouped well and discussed where we went wrong. That game is under the carpet now.’

Pitch report: ‘There was a very heavy shower in the evening. The outfield was well protected, but the atmosphere is still cool. The pitch has some grass on it. The moisture on the wicket combined with the grass should help the seamers’ says Ian Bishop.

Preview: South Africa vs Zimbabwe, Group C, T20 World Cup 2012

Posted: 19 Sep 2012 03:04 PM PDT

Perennial under-achievers at big-ticket ICC events, South Africa will start their campaign to shed the ‘chokers’ tag when they take on minnows Zimbabwe in their opening Group C match of the World Twenty20.

The game should not prove too much of an ask for the Proteas as it would take a very special effort from Zimbabwe after being thrashed by hosts Sri Lanka in their opening match yesterday.

On paper, it is a battle of unequals with the A B de Villiers-led South Africa looking way too formidable for Brendan Taylor’s Zimbabwe. Whatever the department of the game, the South African stand far superior in talent and experience.

And it would be tough for Zimbabwe to bounce back from the opening-match thrashing against a quality opposition, for which winning this match would be good enough to make the Super Eight cut.

Zimbabwe’s batting completely fell apart against Sri Lanka and chasing 182, the line-up folded for 100 with four batsmen contributing nothing to the total and two others falling for single-digit scores.

But Taylor insisted that it was a one-off flopshow and his team is far better than what the scoreboard might suggest.

“We have played enough cricket to go back from today, rethink, have a good look, start training and come back a better side,” he said last night.

Zimbabwe’s bowling effort too was pedestrian to say the least with the combined might of six managing to grab just one wicket.

In the absence of that one inspiring player which almost every team banks on, Zimbabwe can hardly be given a chance to staging an upset win and go through beyond the group stage.

South Africa, on the other hand, is a team which once again looks good enough to go the distance but will have to improve their ability to handle pressure.

“I think we have definitely put certain things in place to give ourselves the best chance. We have buckled in previous ICC events, so hopefully we can go all the way this time around,” said batsman J P Duminy summing up what the under-achievers would have to do.

The Proteas seem to have adapted well posting a good warm-up win over New Zealand in which most of their key batsmen got good match practice.

The form of Richard Levi, who clinched the ICC Twenty20 Performance of the Year, would be crucial along with the ever-reliable Jacques Kallis and Hashim Amla.

They have the pace battery, led by Dale Steyn, to intimidate any opposition but it is the spin department which would be a slight cause of concern. (PTI)
