Cricket News and Cricket Highlights - Crichotline

Preview: Sri Lanka vs Zimbabwe, Group C, T20 World Cup 2012

Posted: 17 Sep 2012 11:41 AM PDT

Host Sri Lanka will kick off the Twenty20 tournament with the game against Zimbabwe. Its just cricket and more cricket with no opening ceremony planned, no live concert or no fireworks. Both team, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe will be excited to take centrestage to play the first match of the tournament here in Hambantota.

Sri Lanka have been playing well and have been the runners-up in 2009 and reached the semi-finals in 2010 but didn’t win it. With everything on their mind they will now look to reverse things and will look to win the tournament at home.

A three-team group doesn’t give you a chance to loose-up as its a matter of every match and every win. Sri Lanka will take the ground as favorites against the minnows Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe haven’t gained much from the practice game as they lost both their games. First, Ireland beat them by 54 runs and then Bangladesh by 5 wickets. This is a clear indication of lack of cricket for Zimbabwe.

Sri Lanka on the other hand beat West Indies by 9 wickets but lost to India by 26 runs. They are favorites for the tournament but playing against minnows is always a crucial game. They got nothing to loose but can create problem for the former.

The home fans might see Tillakaratne Dilshan walking out to open batting with Dilshan Munaweera and the 18-year-old Akila Dananjaya sharing spin-bowling duties with Ajantha Mendis – offering both Munaweera and Dananjaya their international debuts. That means Jayawardene may bat at No. 3, followed by a solid middle order. The fast bowling department will, of course, be led by limited-overs specialist Lasith Malinga.

Zimbabwe may go into the match banking on experience than youthful flair. Hamilton Masakadza, Vusi Sibanda and Brendan Taylor offer quality at the top, but the middle order doesn’t have much to offer. Considering that, Craig Ervine and Stuart Matsikenyeri’s experience should keep them in the eleven. So the only choice Taylor may have to make is on the allrounder – between Elton Chigumbura and Malcolm Waller.

Prosper Utseya, Graeme Cremer and Ray Price are there to spin the bowl for Zimbabwe, but Taylor doesn’t expect much turn out of the Hambantota track. That means one of the three tweakers – most probably Cremer – will miss out.

So in all we are here for the exciting start of the tournment and the team that performs best should win the game.

T20 World Cup 2012: Win against India morale booster, says Mohammad Hafeez

Posted: 17 Sep 2012 09:04 AM PDT

Pakistan captain Mohammad Hafeez said that Monday’s win over India in the World T20 would give his side a morale booster for the main tournament.

“The way the boys approached the chase was very positive. We knew if India could post that total, we could get it if we worked hard. Kamran Akmal was exceptional,” said Hafeez.

“We won the series against Australia in the UAE before coming here. Now we have beaten India in practice match, this will give us the momentum and boost in the proper tournament,” he said.

Hafeez also praised Shoaib Malik for his performance and supporting Akmal in the chase.

“That is what experience is all about. The experience of Malik was also the key. He supported Kamran really well.

The bowlers tried hard, but things didn’t work out for them today.”(PTI)

Pakistan beat India in T20 World Cup 2012 warm-up match

Posted: 17 Sep 2012 06:23 AM PDT

Kamran Akmal and Shoaib Malik added an unbeaten 95 runs stand to power Pakistan to a convincing five-wicket victory over India in the World Twenty20 warm-up match against India at R Premadasa Stadium.

Scorecard | Pakistan vs India Highlights

Kamran’s smashed unbeaten 92 off 50 balls, hammering five fours and six huge sixes to take Pakistan to 186/5 in 19.1 overs. Malik also played fine cameo, scoring 37 off 18 balls with the help of two fours and two sixes.

Ravichandran Ashwin dismissed Mohammad Hafeez and Shahid Afridi in one over to dent Pakistan chase. Ashwin struck again in his next over to scalp Umar Akmal and left Pakistan reeling at 91/5 in 11.3 overs.

Kamran Akmal and Mohammad Hafeez added 51 runs in 34 balls stand for the third wicket to lead Pakistan chase. India dismissed Imran Nazir and Nasir Jamshed in quick succession to rock Pakistan chase.

Ravichandran Ashwin struck in his first over of the innings, removing Imran Nazir to give India crucial breakthrough after Pakistan started off well in their innings. Pakistan suffered another blow just two balls later when Jamshed got run-out without facing a delivery.

Earlier, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma played cracked of an innings to help India post a mammoth 186 run target for Pakistan.

Kohli remained unbeaten on 75 off 47 balls, smashing seven fours and two sixes to power to big total against the arch-rivals.

Saeed Ajmal did the trick again, giving Pakistan a much need breakthrough by removing Sharma, who played magnificent knock 56 0ff 40 balls, smacking six fours and two huge sixes.

The pair also added an unbeaten 127 runs stand for the third wicket, hammering Pakistan bowlers all over the park to put India in commanding position.

Kohli, who has recently been named the ICC ODI cricketer of the Year, took 34 balls for his scintillating half century that included six boundaries.

India lost Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag in successive overs after the Delhi duo gave blistering start with a 41 in just 4.4 overs.

India lost their first wicket when Gautam Gambhir edged a Umar Gul delivery onto his stumps.

Gambhir hit 2 fours in his 16-ball 10.

Saeed Ajmal struck in the next over when he had Sehwag caught by Shahid Afridi at backward point.

Sehwag hit a six and 4 fours in his 14-ball 26.

The breakthroughs for Pakistan came after Indian captain MS Dhoni won the toss and chose to bat.

Their tails up after an easy outing against hosts Sri Lanka, India would like to keep the winning momentum going.

From India’s perspective, things are going in the right direction at the moment and they come into this ‘crucial’ warm-up with plenty of confidence under their belt.

Gayle guides WI to win against Afghanistan in warm-up game: T20 World Cup 2012

Posted: 17 Sep 2012 06:15 AM PDT

West Indies fielded a squad resembling its first-choice playing XI, bringing back Chris Gayle and Darren Sammy, for the warm-up tie against Afghanistan at the P Sara Oval in Colombo on Monday (September 17). The effect was evident, as West Indies, chasing a modest Afghanistan total, pulled off a win by 8 wickets with 25 balls to spare.

West Indies pacers Fidel Edwards (3/24), Ravi Rampaul (1/26) and Sammy (1/15) caused the early damage as Afghanistan slipped to 32 for 3.

Asghar Stanikzai changed the course of the match to a large extent with a 50-ball 53. But with no significant contribution coming from the rest of the batsmen, and Sunil Narine (2/23) bringing his guiles into play, Afghanistan managed only a rather modest 122 for 7 from its 20 overs.

West Indies's reply started badly, with Dwayne Smith (13) falling to Mohammad Nabi, who later also accounted for Johnson Charles (12) to return figures of 2/29 from his four overs.

The rest of the innings was all about Chris Gayle, who slammed an unbeaten 65 from 48 balls, an innings studded with five fours and four sixes. Marlon Samuels hung around to give Gayle company till the end, unbeaten on a quiet 15 from 12 balls.

Steyn, de Villiers stars in South Africa warm-up win: T20 World Cup 2012

Posted: 17 Sep 2012 06:12 AM PDT

Four wickets from Dale Steyn helped South Africa recorded a morale boosting 9-run warm-up win over New Zealand on Monday, despite the impressive power hitting efforts of Ross Taylor.

After a damp pitch had seen the match start time put back four hours until the afternoon, nobody was quite sure how the wicket at the Colts Cricket Club in Colombo was going to play. However, Richard Levi (24) and Faf du Plessis (24) would have eased the batter's worries, with an excellent opening stand.

Three quick wickets, which saw South Africa reduced from 47-0 to 61-3, would have caused some concern, until skipper AB de Villiers and JP Duminy showed great form in a partnership of 62 in the space of seven overs. de Villiers in particular hit the ball particularly crisply in his 54, reaching his half century from just 28 balls, while Duminy scored in excess of a run a ball for his 30.

Supported by some powerful late order hitting, with Farhaan Behardien striking 24 from 12 balls and Albie Morkel making 15 not out from just four deliveries, 186-6 was always going to be an imposing total. With cloud cover building in humid conditions, New Zealand began its reply in typically belligerent fashion, but James Franklin, Martin Guptill and Brendan McCullum all fell with less than 50 on the board.

Ross Taylor and Rob Nicol then combined for a brilliant partnership of 94, made in just over 10 overs, with the New Zealand skipper in particularly impressive form, smashing seven sixes in his 42-ball innings of 75.

However, once he fell the asking rate always looked like a tough target, with Nicol (37) struggling to improve his strike-rate once Taylor had fallen, particularly against a world-class South Africa bowling attack. Dale Steyn (4-25) in particular bowled a brilliant final spell which restricted New Zealand to 177-8.

New Zealand travel to Kandy on Tuesday morning, ahead of its opening match against Bangladesh on Friday, while South Africa will continue its preparations in Colombo.

India vs Pakistan Warm up Post Match Presentation – T20 World Cup 2012

Posted: 17 Sep 2012 05:57 AM PDT

Hafeez: ‘The way Kamran played was exceptional. The way the boys approached the chase was very positive. Shoaib knows how to handle pressure. He supported Kamran very well. It was a good effort from the bowlers as well. They tried a few things. Chasing well is a very positive sign for Pakistan. Winning against Australia and winning against India will give us the momentum we need.’

Kamran Akmal, not surprisingly, was the man of the match for his splendid knock.

Dhoni: ‘It was a good game to test out. We were playing with five bowlers. We needed to take a call if we need to go in with four or five bowlers. Maybe we gave away few extra runs initially but overall it was a good game. There are a few batsmen in our team who like to play aggressively. They like the cushion of an extra batsman. We are comfortable with 7 batsmen. Rohit played very well. Lot of people think 20 overs is very short but you’ve got to give yourself some time. He did well today. Hopefully if he and Virat keep doing that, we will think of going in with an extra bowler at some point in the tournament.’
