Ajantha Mendis helps Sri Lanka crush Zimbabwe: T20 World Cup 2012

Posted: 18 Sep 2012 12:11 PM PDT

Ajantha Mendis bettered his own T20 record by taking six wickets for just eight runs as Sri Lanka walloped minnows Zimbabwe by 82 runs in the opening match of the World Twenty20 cricket tournament.

Scorecard | Sri Lanka vs Zimbabwe Highlights

Sri Lanka recovered from a slow start to post a huge 182 for four and then bundled out Zimbabwe for 100 in 17.3 overs in the Group C match at the Mahinda Rajapakse stadium.

The Zimbabweans struggled to handle spin and were bamboozled by Ajantha (6/8) and Jeevan Mendis (3/24), who shared nine wickets between them.

Ajantha’s figures were best in Twenty20 cricket as he improved on his own early figures of six for 16 which he had claimed against Australia, last year.

The hosts owed their impressive total to Kumar Sangakkara (44) and Jeevan as the two left-handers put on a 94-run stand for the fourth wicket.

Sri Lanka were 107 for three in 14 overs but Sangakkara and Jeevan took the game away from the minnows with their superb batting. Zimbabwe had done well in the early part of the Lankan innings but leaked 75 runs in the last six overs to let go the advantage.

The total proved too big to manage for Zimbabwe against an experienced bowling line-up.

Ajantha was too hot to handle as he conceded just eight runs in his four overs and two of them maiden.

The Zimbabweans could manage just five boundaries in the first 10 overs, three of them coming from the bat of Hamilton Maskadaza (20), who was top scorer for them.

Ajantha struck twice in two balls in the sixth over as he first rattled the stumps of Vusi Sibanda (11) and then had skipper Brendan Taylor stumped in the next ball.

Maskadaza was batting confidently and had even dispatched dangerous Lasith Malinga twice to the boundary line but he also failed to pick Ajantha and became his third victim.

Jeevan after contributing with the bat, struck twice in his first over as he scalped Criag Ervin (10) and Malcolm Waller, who went without troubling the scorer.

At 58 for five in 11 overs, Zimbabwe’s chase was in disarray and it was matter of time when the Lanakans would complete the thumping win.

But somehow Zimbabweans could not capitalise on that. They had bowled six wides inside first five overs, which meant that they had bowled an extra over apart from giving six extra runs to the rivals.

Adding to that, they did not take even simple catches like the one offered by debutante Dilshan Munaweera off Chris Mpofu. Malcolm Waller failed to latch on to a low catch.

The two Dilshans then reeled off three boundaries in that over, taking 15 runs. Munaweera’s innings ended in a run out when he lost his bat while attempting a single and failed to get back to the crease in time.

Cremer started to trouble the Lankans right from the start and had even trapped Mahela Jayawardene (13) but that ball was called a no-ball for breach of side crease.

However, the spinner succeeded in removing Dilshan by having him caught behind two balls later. Sri Lanka lost skipper through a run out in a mix up with Kumar Sangakkara.

Lanka’s 100 came in the 14th over when Mendis swept a Cremer delivery to leg side boundary. Mendis pushed the accelerator button on, hitting a six and a four off Elton Chugumbura. Sangakkara and Mendis kept moving the scoreboard although they did not score many boundaries.

Two of the three sixes in Lankan innings came in the last over — one was hit Sangakkara just before getting run out and one by Thisara Perera. (PTI)

Sri Lanka vs Zimbabwe Post Match Presentation Match 1 T20 World Cup 2012

Posted: 18 Sep 2012 11:30 AM PDT

Ajantha Mendis: I am really happy today. Playing cricket after nine months, I am really happy with my performance, and I will try my best in the coming matches.

Ajantha Mendis is the MoM for his match figures of 4-2-8-6.

Mahela Jayawardene: You can’t take anything to granted. We had to make sure we played to our potential. It’s a pretty good wicket, just needed to get used to it a little bit. Our guys batted really well, and the bowlers then did a super job.

Brendan Taylor: We are a far better side than what we showed. Credit goes to Sri Lanka. They showed why they are one of the favourites to win the tournament. We have played enough cricket to go back from today, rethink and come back a better side.

Zaheer Khan’s fitness key to India’s success: Wasim Akram

Posted: 18 Sep 2012 10:50 AM PDT

Pace spearhead Zaheer Khan quickly needs to regroup his resources and improve his fitness level if India are to fancy their chances of winning the World Cup Twenty20 again, feels former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram.

“Zaheer’s fitness looked suspect. He did not look sharp enough and probably his energy levels were not up to the mark. I know Sri Lankan conditions are extremely demanding, but if Zaheer has to lead India’s attack, he has to be at the peak of his fitness. Dhoni’s selection worries, I would imagine, will be around his senior players like Zaheer, Harbhajan and Irfan Pathan,” Akram said.

Akram said that the loss against Pakistan in the warm-up game has left skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni with the dilemma of whether to go in with five specialist bowlers or opt for the additional batsman, considering that bowling in the death overs has been a worry.

“The match against Pakistan will force MS Dhoni to mull over his first XI. While it’s always a horses-for-courses policy, deciding the playing XI will always be a tough call.

“For a 20-20 game, India have several ‘all-rounders’ and that will enable Dhoni pick four specialist bowlers and seven batsmen. The fact that Sehwag, Raina, Yuvraj and Kohli are decent bowlers is a great bonus for Team India,” he said.

Akram expressed his happiness over the inclusion of Yuvraj Singh in the Indian team.

“It was great to see Yuvraj back in the field. I saw his quickfire 34 off 26 balls against the Kiwis in Chennai. Typically, Yuvraj connected a few lusty blows but his timing has to get sweeter. The fact he is back to international cricket is only due to the Almighty’s blessings and I am sure everyone’s going to watch him closely in Sri Lanka,” he said.

The pace legend picked India and Pakistan as favourites to lift the trophy on the slow familiar tracks of the island nation where they have played a lot of cricket.

“It’s too hazardous to pick favourites in a T20 competition. The complexion of matches can change like a chameleon. While India remain strong contenders because of their batting depth, Pakistan’s bowling strength makes them equally strong,” Akram said.

“After India and Pakistan, in my reckoning, two from among England, the West Indies and South Africa will complete the last four. Sri Lanka have little chance with a weak middle-order and over-dependence on Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara. No team has ever won the T20 World Cup as hosts. I think the trend will continue,” he added.

Akram felt that Pakistan’s run-chase and their ability to handle the pressure against a talented Indian side will give Mohammed Hafeez’s team a great deal of confidence going into the championship.

“No matter what the status of the game is, no Indian captain wants to lose a match against Pakistan. Every India versus Pakistan contest is emotionally supercharged and hence the high fives in the Pakistan dug-out on Monday were expected. It was good to see the players in great spirits and the younger ones exchanging pleasantries after the game.”

Akram said that Pakistan have the best attack in the world and singled out Saeed Ajmal and Shahid Afridi as the key men for the Men in Green.

“Saeed Ajmal will be the man to watch out and Shahid Afridi remains the quintessential partnership breaker with wickets at crucial junctures. If Afridi has to play in the Pakistan team, he can only do so as a bowler. His experience in tight situations can be effective and his flatter leg-spins are tough to hit.”

Sri Lanka will take on Zimbabwe in the first game of the tournament. Sri Lanka clearly the favorites for the tournament will start the tournament with win on their mind. Zimbabwe being a minnow have less chance to win but under-estimating them can be problem for Sri Lanka. Minnows have created upsets in earlier tournaments and Sri Lanka can’t afford to take them lightly. The format of game is such that every game matters and every win as well. So nothing can be taken for granted else it will cost a lot.

Preview: Pakistan vs England Warm-up match T20 World Cup 2012

Posted: 18 Sep 2012 05:25 AM PDT

Pakistan take on England in a warm-up match scheduled a day after the start of the T20 World Cup 2012 tournament. This will be a good warm-up game for both the teams as they will be playing on one of the venue for the tournament and this will help them to access the conditions.

Both teams started with a warm-up game against their old arch rivals. England played against Australia and beating them by 9 runs while Pakistan played against India and they beat India by 5 wickets in a close game in last over. So the teams have started well and now will look to continue the momentum.

Pakistan performance against India was more like a one man show. Kamran Akmal unbeaten 92 runs off 50 balls guided them to a superb win but there bowlers were not able to give their best. Pakistan key bowlers Sohail Tanvir (11.66), Mohammad Sami (15.50) and Shahid Afridi (10.25) all proving expensive against the superb knock by Virat Kohli (75 n.o.) and Rohit Sharma (56). They need to work on their bowling in last warm-up match.

England, on other hand, had a good warm-up game against Australia. England batsman scored runs exepcailly Alex Hales (52), Luke Wright (35) and Eoin Morgan (30), while all five bowlers in operation – Steven Finn, Stuart Broad, Tim Bresnan, Graeme Swann and Danny Briggs – picked up wickets. This is definitely a positive thing for England and they just need to get the momentum going.

The clash between the two sides will help them access their strengths and weakness as they move forward to fight for the T20 World Cup title for the second time.

Teams:
England: Jos Buttler, Danny Briggs, Craig Kieswetter (wk), Eoin Morgan, Jonathan Bairstow, Ravi Bopara, Luke Wright, Tim Bresnan, Steven Finn, Graeme Swann, Stuart Broad (c), Jade Dernbach, Alex Hales, Michael Lumb, Samit Patel

Pakistan: Mohammad Hafeez (c), Nasir Jamshed, Imran Nazir, Umar Akmal, Shoaib Malik, Shahid Afridi, Kamran Akmal (wk), Umar Gul, Mohammad Sami, Sohail Tanvir, Saeed Ajmal, Asad Shafiq, Yasir Arafat, Abdul Razzaq, Raza Hasan

England announce test squad for India tour, Kevin Pietersen, Bopara dropped

Posted: 18 Sep 2012 04:49 AM PDT

Controversial cricketer Kevin Pietersen and struggling Ravi Bopara were not included in 16-member England’s squad for the four-match Test series against India on Tuesday, which begins from November 15.

England’s 16-member squad for the India tour included as many as three spinners — Monty Panesar, Samit Patel and Graeme Swann.

The 21-year-old Yorkshire cricketer Joe Root has been included in the tour party, the BBC reported.

Earlier, reports suggested that Pietersen could resume his England career during the tour of India after the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed that Thursday’s planned squad announcement had been put back until Tuesday at the earliest.

Pietersen, England’s most talented batsman, remains in international exile following a series of flare-ups that led to him being dropped following the drawn second Test with South Africa at Headingley last month.

He’s not in the England squad that will defend their World Twenty20 title in Sri Lanka later this month, despite being man of the tournament when the team won in the Caribbean two years ago, and there had been speculation he would also be omitted from the four-Test tour of India starting in November.

England Test squad for India:

Alastair Cook (c), James Anderson, Jonny Bairstow, Ian Bell, Tim Bresnan, Stuart Broad, Nick Compton, Steven Finn, Graham Onions, Eoin Morgan, Monty Panesar, Samit Patel, Matt Prior (wk), Joe Root, Graeme Swann, Jonathan Trott.
