After winning his battle against a rare germ cell cancer, India’s World Cup hero Yuvraj Singh would be the cynosure of all eyes when he starts his journey back to international cricket with the first Twenty20 match against New Zealand on Saturday.

Yuvraj was diagnosed with the ailment between his lungs within months of winning the Man of the Tournament award in the 2011 World Cup.

His career looked in jeopardy when the diagnosis was first revealed but the flamboyant all-rounder fought back after undergoing three cycles of chemotherapy.

The 30-year-old left-hander has been training hard at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bangalore and would be looking to make a statement when he returns to the cricket field in Saturday’s match.

It is something that has never happened on the cricket field and Yuvraj will go on to inspire generations when he wears the Indian colours again after more than nine months.

Behind all the limelight he hogged after he returned home, Yuvraj put in hours sweating out at the NCA to regain the fitness and agility, for which he was known for.

Whether he would make a stupendous comeback on his return on Saturday or not but the fact that he beat cancer will now be a part of cricketing folklore.

“I had played three practice games at NCA. I will get some serious match practice in the two matches against New Zealand scheduled September 8 and 11,” he said.

“Then, I would be playing two more practice matches. So, you see, I will be having seven games before the World Cup. I will be having enough match practice,” he added.

His last International appearance was the Kolkata Test against the West Indies in November last year, while it was more than a year ago when he last played a T20 (against South Africa on January 9, 2011).

The two T20s against New Zealand will start India’s countdown for the fourth edition the World Twenty20 that will get underway in Sri Lanka on September 18.

Doug Bracewell and Tim Southee are the Kiwis pace spearhead while 20-year-old Adam Milne will look to impress with his searing pace for the first time in sub-continental conditions.

Sun has been shining bright after last few days of bad weather and the Visakhapatnam T20 is set to enthral the cricket-starved crowd of this coastal port city of Andhra Pradesh.

The second and final T20I is slated in Chennai on September 11. (PTI)

Preview: England vs South Africa 1st T20 Chester-le-Street 2012

After winning the Test series and drawing the ODI leg, South Africa will now take on England in first of the three Twenty20 matches at Chester-le-Street on Friday.

South Africa, who created history recently by becoming the first team to top the ICC rankings in all three formats recently, will be upbeat against the England who troubled by Pieterson saga.

England, the reigning World Twenty20 champions, have won six of their last eight T20s. The buoyant South Africa, meanwhile, have won 10 of the last 13 matches. That means, there will be a close contest between the two teams. The three Twenty20 games will also serve as warm-up for the upcoming ICC World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka, starting September 18.

In a press conference, England T20 captain Stuart Broad has insisted the absence of Kevin Pietersen will not overshadow
the upcoming series and their defence of the World Cup title. Pietersen was dropped after he sent “provocative texts” about his team-mates to the South African players.

The 32-year-old Pietersen, who was Player-of-the-Series in England's triumph in 2010, will be missed in the series and the upcoming T20 world cup too.

England have called up speedster James Anderson as cover for Steven Finn, who suffered a back problem. Anderson is in line to make his first T20 international appearance in nearly three years. Tim Bresnan is also doubtful due to an injury.

Eoin Morgan, who has the highest average (40) for an England batsman in this format, will be the man to watch out for in the series. The 25-year-old Englishman has scored 603 runs in 22 matches. He has been England’s top scorer in four of the last 10 Twenty20s.

The wicketkeeper batsman Craig Kieswetter, who has scored 411 runs from 18 matches, will be another key figure for England. The allrounder Ravi Bopara has crossed 40 runs mark in the last 18 innings and has scalped nine wickets. The devastating batsman Jonny Bairstow is capable to propel the innings in difficult situation. He scored an unbeaten 60 and 22 in the previous series against Pakistan. Luke Wright, with 355 runs in 25 innings and six scalps, is a star with both bat and bowl.

Jos Butler and Michael Lumb, who haven't been so impressive in the game, England will be expecting a good knock from them in the middle order.

Alex Hales does have two half-centuries – including a scintillating 99 against West Indies earlier this summer – and is considered a good match finisher.

On the other hand, Hashim Amla, who has been in the form of his life so far on the tour, hasn't been so notable in the T20 format. The South African star has just scored 115 runs in 8 matches with a meager average of 15 but his intelligence will be capitalized by the team.

AB de Villiers, the South African skipper who played a crucial knock in the final one-dayer at Trent Bridge, will be crucial for the team. The middle order will be bolstered by reliable JP Duminy. Though he didn't have a good time in the ODIs, his T20 experience will be helpful for the visitors. His recent scores – 38, 41, 0, 67, 0, 20, 41, 96*, 35 are enough to describe his T20 style.

Only Graeme Smith has scored more runs in T20 cricket for South Africa. Smith is the top-scorer in four of his last nine games for the Proteas in this format.

With the likes of Dale Steyn and Lonwabo Tsotsobe The bowling department is seemed to be dominating. The experienced Jacques Kallis will be contributing with the bowl from the other end along with the companions Morne Morkel and Wayne Parnell.

Probable XIs:
England: Stuart Broad (Capt), James Anderson, Jony Bairstow, Ravi Bopara, Tim Bresnan, Steven Finn, Craig Kieswetter (wk), Eoin Morgan, Samit Patel, Graeme Swann, Luke Wright

South Africa: AB de Villiers (capt/wk), Hashim Amla, Johan Botha, JP Duminy, Faf du Plessis, Jacques Kallis, Albie Morkel, Morne Morkel, Wayne Parnell, Dale Steyn, Lonwabo Tsotsobe

2nd T20: Pakistan beat Australia in a Super Over #PakvsAus

Posted: 07 Sep 2012 03:30 PM PDT

Pakistan won the second Twenty20 against Australia in a thrilling Super Over finish at the Dubai Stadium on Friday, taking an unbeatable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

Scorecard | 2nd T20 Highlights

With both tied on 151 runs at the end of 40 fascinating overs in the match, a Super over round was played for the result.

Pakistan paceman Umar Gul restricted Australian batsmen David Warner, Shane Watson and George Bailey to 11-1 before Umar Akmal and Abdul Razzaq hit the required runs, the winner coming off the last delivery.

The third and last match will be played here on Monday.

The match provided complete entertainment to a 25,000 sell-out holiday crowd, who were left on the edges of their seat as both the teams tussled for victory in the 40 overs.

Pakistan had made 151-4 with Mohammad Hafeez (45), Nasir Jamshed (45) and Kamran Akmal (43 not out) contributing with the bat.

George Bailey led the Australian run chase with a solid 42.

Australia needed 21 off the last two overs as Bailey hit two leg-side boundaries off Gul but his dismissal, with his team needing 10 off the final over it looked Pakistan were favourites.

Pat Cummins hit Abdul Razzaq over long-on to tie the score but off the last ball the Australian batsman was caught, making it the sixth tied match in all Tweny20 cricket.

David Warner started Australia’s run chase with a brilliant 31 off just 19 balls, hitting two boundaries and a six off Hafeez’s first over.

But once Saeed Ajmal came to bowl, the Australian innings faltered. Ajmal bowled Warner and then had Watson (33), taking his tally to 58 in Twenty20 cricket, the joint top bowler along with countryman Shahid Afridi.

Watson had hit two boundaries and two sixes during his 28-ball knock.

Michael Hussey (23) and Bailey took the secore to 109 before Hussey holed out to Gul. Australia at that point needed 43 off the last five overs.

Earlier Hafeez hit three boundaries in Cummins’ first over of the match but fellow opener Imran Nazir was bowled for nought in Mitchell Starc’s second over.

Hafeez and Jamshed shared a solid 76-run partnership for the second wicket as both charghed the Australian bowling with some aggressive batting. Jamshed hit four boundaries and a six during his 36-ball knock.

He fell to a superb catch by Dan Christian off Cummins, as the fielder lunged backward and held the ball with left hand.

Hafeez hit six boundaries during his 42-ball knock.

Kamran added 46 for the fourth wicket with his younger brother Umar who made 13.

Kamran hit six boundaries during his knock, helping Pakistan to 90 runs in the last 10 overs.

Pakistan vs Australia 2nd T20 Post Match Presentation #PakvsAus Dubai 2012

Posted: 07 Sep 2012 02:26 PM PDT

Hafeez: We all know that anything can happen in T20s. The boys responded really well. Ajmal and Gul bowled really well today after the batsmen put up a good total. I wanted to bat on this track and we wanted to get a total of 140 plus. I was sure that we could defend 140+ with our bowlers. Gul is coming back to form which is a great thing for Pakistan. The boys are responding well under pressure

George Bailey: Good game of cricket, we had our opportunities. I think our bowling was good. Overall, we did well. Nice to get couple out of the middle. We will be raring to go for game three.

Saeed Ajmal: I had an injury which is why Gul bowled the super over. We did well today.

Saeed Ajmal is the Man of the Match
