Darren Sammy urges team-mates to stay hungry ahead of Bangladesh series

Posted: 11 Nov 2012 10:20 AM PST

West Indies captain Darren Sammy wants his players to “stay hungry” and to build on recent successes when they meet Bangladesh on Tuesday in the first of two cricket Tests.

Sammy’s men are buoyed by victory in the World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka last month following a 2-0 home Test win over New Zealand.

They are looking to continue the good work in a Bangladesh tour which also includes five one-day games and a Twenty20.

Sammy, who led the West Indies to a 1-0 Test victory over Bangladesh last year, said his team must maintain the momentum.

“I think World Twenty20 was a great achievement for us but we have got to stay hungry. We can’t keep thinking because we won the World Twenty20 that we have turned the corner,” he said.

West Indies, a major force in world cricket from the 1970s to the 1990s, slumped miserably in the new century. They have, however, shown an improvement under the unassuming Sammy as captain and hard-working coach Ottis Gibson.

With Chris Gayle in good touch and the ever-reliable Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who has played in 144 Tests, they boost a strong batting line-up.

Gayle plundered 150 and 64 not out in the first Test against New Zealand in July — his first Test after a two-year exile following a falling-out with the cricket administration.

BCCI rubbishes match fixing claims of India-Pakistan world cup semi-final

Posted: 11 Nov 2012 09:57 AM PST

The Board of Control for Cricket in India on Sunday rubbished the fresh claims that the 2011 India-Pakistan World Cup semifinal could have been fixed, saying such a suggestion was an insult to the Indian team, which had worked hard for the victory.

A British sports-betting journalist in his yet to be launched book has raised doubts that the match between the two arch-rivals may have been fixed.

BCCI President N Srinivasan however dismissed the claims.

“I don’t generally comment on such newspaper reports but this is the farthest from the truth. And it is an insult to the Indian team which worked hard to win,” Srinivasan told reporters.

Reacting to the claims, Pakistan’s leading off-spinner has said this was being done to spoil the upcoming series.

India and Pakistan are set to resume bilateral cricket ties after a gap of five years with a three-match ODI series and two Twenty20s in December-January.

The journalist has written in his book that he got a message from an Indian bookie, who predicted the trend and pattern of the match. British Tabloid ‘Daily Mail’ has published extracts of the book.

The ICC had earlier rejected the allegations which had surfaced shortly after the match.

The then ICC CEO Haroon Lorgat had said, “The ICC has no reason or evidence to require an investigation into this match. It is indeed sad for spurious claims to be made which only serve to cause doubt on the semi-final of one of the most successful ICC Cricket World Cups ever.”

Meanwhile, the then Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Ijaz Butt said he would like to see the PCB take up the issue with the ICC.

“I am no longer the Chairman and it is not right for me to say anything now but I think the current Chairman should take up this issue with the ICC,” Butt said.

Australia under pressure as South Africa dominates Day 3 of 1st Test

Posted: 11 Nov 2012 02:59 AM PST

South Africa were on track to end Australia’s unbeaten 24-year Test run at the Gabba after dominating the third day’s play in the opening Test on Sunday.

Scorecard | Day 3 Highlights 1st Test

The world’s number one team amassed a formidable 450 in their first innings and then had Michael Clarke’s Australians under pressure at 111/3 in reply at stumps.

Clarke was at the crease on 34 with opener Ed Cowan not out 49 in an unbroken 71-run stand.

The Australians last lost at the Gabba against the West Indies in 1988, but the Proteas’ first innings total was the best by a touring side at the ground since England’s winning 456 in 1986.

Jacques Kallis had a memorable day, raising his 44th Test century — he is second on the list of all-time century makers, behind only India’s Sachin Tendulkar — and his fifth against Australia.

His 147 was the highest score by a South African in a Brisbane Test since Eddie Barlow’s 114 in 1963.

The star all-rounder also chipped in with two catches at second slip to help put the skids under the Australians.

The home side’s thoughts turned to saving the match after three wickets tumbled inside the opening 10 overs.

David Warner lasted 15 balls before he poked at a Dale Steyn delivery slanted across him straight to Kallis at second slip to depart for four.

Debutant Rob Quiney fell to a spectacular juggling catch on the fine leg boundary rope by Steyn for nine off Morne Morkel.

Steyn tossed the ball into the air realising he was going over the rope and had the presence of mind to step back into the field of play and take the catch.

Senior batsman Ricky Ponting lasted just five balls before he edged Morkel to the safe hands of Kallis for a duck to leave the home side wobbling at 40 for three.

Kallis and Hashim Amla earlier hit centuries as South Africa dominated Australia’s bowling with a formidable first innings of 450 off 151.4 overs.

Australia removed Kallis shortly after lunch when Quiney took a high two-handed chance in the gully off James Pattinson to end the all-rounder’s 349-minute stint at the crease.

Kallis shared in a 165-run partnership for third wicket with Hashim Amla, who reached his third century in four innings against Australia and his 17th overall before he given out lbw to Peter Siddle for 104.

Amla was struck high and TV replays suggested the ball was going over the stumps. Surprisingly, he did not refer Asad Rauf’s decision to the third umpire.

The world number two batsman in Tests became South Africa’s first triple centurion with an unbeaten 311 against England at The Oval in July.

The Australian bowlers, who eked out just two wickets on Friday’s opening day, had their best spell with four wickets in the middle session.

Ben Hilfenhaus wrapped up the Proteas’ innings with the wickets of Dale Steyn (15) and Morne Morkel (0) after tea. JP Duminy was unable to bat after rupturing his Achilles on Friday’s opening day.

Debutant Rory Kleinveldt blasted two successive sixes off spinner Nathan Lyon to remain 17 not out.

Pattinson was Australia’s best bowler with three for 93.

Australia, in the field for over 10 hours interspersed by Friday’s washout, were in early strife with South Africa’s vaunted pace attack pressing home the advantage to groans from the home crowd.

The first target is to avoid the follow-on target of 251 on Monday’s fourth day.

Pakistan to tour West Indies in 2013

Posted: 11 Nov 2012 01:05 AM PST

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has finalised a Test tour to the West Indies next year in July-August that will ensure that the national team and its players remain busy throughout the year.

A reliable source in the board told PTI that the Pakistan Team has three major series lined up for 2013, an away and home series against South Africa and a tour to the West Indies and is also hoping to organise a home Test series against India.

“The team will go to the Caribbean after taking part in the Champions Trophy in England that will be held in June.

Before the tournament we will also be playing a series against Ireland,” the source said.

He said that the series against the West Indies will include three Tests, ODIs and T20 matches.

He said after the Caribbean tour the board has a window open in August-September and will try to convince the Indian board to play a series in this period which will be treated as a home series for Pakistan.

“The idea is there and discussions on this will be held when Pakistan goes to India in December but it is too early to say anything concrete now,” the source said.

He said later in the year starting October South Africa is also due to tour Pakistan but the source admitted that would be depend on the security situation in the country.

“If security issues lead to South Africa not wanting to play in Pakistan than obviously the other option is to host them at a neutral venue,” he said.

The Pakistan board is also expecting Pakistani players to be invited for the Indian Premier League next year.

“The board will know in December what is the position but since relations have now improved and the national team is also going to India indications are our players will feature in the players auction in January or February,” the source said.

Prior to the IPL which begins from April 4 the PCB is also readying itself to host the Pakistan Premier League in a week or 10 day window starting in late March.

“The situation is that from December onwards we have a busy schedule for our players who go to India and than South Africa where the tour ends on March 24 after that they appear in the PPL and hopefully the IPL before going for the Champions Trophy and then to the West Indies,” the source added.

He conceded that they were also chances that Bangladesh might tour Pakistan for a short series anytime next year and Pakistan might have to go to Zimbabwe for a short series.

“We had put off the tour to Zimbabwe that was due in November because of the series in India and they are keen to play that series sometime next year.”
