Zaheer Khan, Harbhajan Singh inspects Wankhede pitch ahead of 2nd Test

Posted: 21 Nov 2012 11:30 AM PST

Senior players Zaheer Khan and Harbhajan Singh on inspected the pitch on which the second Test match against England will be played.

The duo had a look of the pitch after their batting session at the nets. They were accompanied by Wankhede Stadium curator Sudhir Naik, who was earlier Zaheer Khan’s coach.

There is an even grass cover on the wicket, which helps to bind the red soil and traditionally Mumbai pitches have red soil.

Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni had recently asked the curators to doctor the pitches and make it more spin-friendly.

The Indian captain, after winning the first Test against England at Ahmedabad, had expressed his displeasure at the Motera wicket and said,”We wanted the curators to prepare the pitches that will turn from day one.”

Zaheer Khan had picked up three wickets against the visiting team in the Ahmedabad Test, while Harbhajan did not play in the first Test match. Harbhajan was included in the squad after nearly a year.

The Indian squad, barring four players, had a decent stint in the nets.

Pacer Umesh Yadav was in the dressing room but did not come out to practice. Opener Gautam Gambhir, who left mid way in the first test following the death of his grandmother, was also missing from the practice session.

Spinners Pragyan Ojha and Ravichandran Ashwin, and all-rounder Yuvraj Singh also did not practice.

India will take on England on November 23 in the second Test match.

India are 1-0 up in the series after defeating England by 9 wickets in the first match.

The last two games of the series are to be played in Kolkata (December 5-9) and Nagpur (December 13-17).

Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli honoured at BCCI Annual Awards 2012

Posted: 21 Nov 2012 10:45 AM PST

Former India captain and legendary opener Sunil Gavaskar was today conferred with BCCI’s prestigious Col C K Nayudu Lifetime Achievement award while Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli were also awarded for their achievements in international arena during past season.

Tendulkar was feted for his incredible achiement of scoring 100 international hundreds in Tests and ODIs combined.

Kohli won the ‘Polly Umrigar Award’ for the being the best Indian cricketer of the 2011-12 season in international cricket.

With it, Kohli had his name added to other stars who have received this honour previously including Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid. He was presented with a glittering trophy and a cheque of Rs 5 lakh.

VVS Laxman, who retired before the start of the home rubber against New Zealand in August was also felicitated for his stupendous achievement in international cricket for past decade and half.

The prolific batsman was also adjudged as ICC’s ‘ODI Cricketer of the Year’ earlier.

“I am happy to receive the award in front of so many cricketers whom I have watched and got inspired by. I hope I can continue in the same way this season,” said the Delhi batsman after receiving his award.

Earlier, after receiving his award, Tendulkar thanked Gavaskar and called him his inspiration for taking up the game.

“We grew up watching you. Thanks for inspiring me to play cricket. All I wanted to do was to follow your footsteps,” said Tendulkar addressing Gavaskar sitting in front.

“I was 12 or so and was disappointed as I did not get the ‘Best Junior Cricketer’ award. I got a letter from Mr Gavaskar saying if you go through that list there is one person who did not get that award and he (Gavaskar) had not done badly in Tests,” said Tendulkar.

He also thanked the BCCI for always standing by him, whether he was performing or not performing or when he was injured.

“BCCI has always stood by me. Whether I did well or not or when I was injured, BCCI has always supported me. I also thank John Wright (former India coach). He told me in 2002-03, when we were flying from Johannesburg to Durban that I should complete 100 international hundreds. I asked him, “What are you drinking? Now I am standing in front of you after scoring century of centuries. Thank you John Wright.”

Laxman got a bit emotional and said that it has been three months since he called curtains to his career and it has given him a chance to look back on his 16-year old interntional career.

“As a youngster, I wanted to play for India. I realised my dream. Lots of people supported me in fulfilling it, my uncle, the Hyderabad Cricket Association for supporting me in my formative years, my wife Shailaja and my teammates in the Indian team,” said Laxman.

Gavaskar described the award as “the biggest in Indian cricket” and that he was honoured to receive it (from Board President N Srinivasan).

“I dedicate this award to the Indian cricket fans without whose support, encouragement and the occasional criticism which is a wake-up call, this would not have been possible,” he said.

“Just to see the list of previous recipients of this award and to be in that list is a great honour. It feels humbling to be in that list,” he said.

“I have to thank all my friends who had played tennis ball cricket, club cricket, the umpires, the local associations for helping us play so many tournaments. The BCCI president N Srinivasan and his other colleagues, the media for highlighting my scores and bringing it to the attention of the selectors and the public,” said Gavaskar.

Preview: Australia vs South Africa, 2nd Test, Adelaide, 22-26 Nov, 2012

Australia are charged up with confidence after a superb comeback in the rain hit first test match at the Perth. Australia will look to channelize their momentum into the second test against South Africa at the Adelaide to give visitors a tough fight. A victory for home team here will seriously threaten the no. 1 position of South Africa. South Africa skipper, Graeme Smith knows they need to improve a lot in both batting and bowling department in the 2nd test.

Australia skipper, Michael Clarke continued his superb innings throughout the year and in the last test as well to take Australia into dominating position. Another positive thing coming out from last test was Michael Hussey smashing a century after seven years against South Africa. Ed Cowan, Australian opener also proved his worth as a opener and gave Australia a strong batting line up to come against South Africa. The only downfall is the absence of Shane Watson who is still not recovered from injury. Australian bowlers weren’t able to pick wickets on Day 1 of Gabba test but came back well in the game on Day 3. So in all we see an all together team effort from Australians which is big positive.

When the team is performing its always good to go with same team so that the momentum goes on and that’s what Australian selectors did. Australia have announced an unchanged squad for Adelaide test which means Shane Watson still is not fit to play. Besides Shane Watson being ruled out, one man that will be under scanner will be Ricky Ponting. In the last three test played against South Africa he was out on ducks, the last of which came in Brisbane. His further participation in the series could depend on how he handles the willow in batting-friendly Adelaide.

South Africa will be looking to change their tactics in the Adelaide test. South Africa have announced two changes in the squad. South Africa have brought in leg-spinner, Imran Tahir and all-rounder Faf du Plessis, who will make his debut. Tahir replaces paceman Rory Kleinveldt, who went wicketless in the drawn Brisbane Test, while Du Plessis plays in place of the injured JP Duminy.

Most of South Africa’s batsmen clicked in Brisbane, with Jacques Kallis and Hashim Amla scoring centuries and opener Alviro Petersen getting 64. AB de Villiers juggled the wicketkeeper’s role with scores of 40 and 29 not out, and shrugged off the notion that he was being burdened by saying he felt like he could have scored centuries in each innings.

“In Brisbane, we had them under pressure but just let them go. Hopefully this time we can really squeeze them and break the momentum,” said Petersen. “In the last year or two, we have played good cricket, that is why we’re the No. 1 Test team in the world and that will count for a lot.”

Sri Lanka pick five pacers for Australia series

Posted: 21 Nov 2012 07:00 AM PST

Sri Lanka on Wednesday picked five new-ball bowlers for the three-Test series in Australia starting next month, but once again ignored unorthodox spinner Ajantha Mendis.

Nuwan Kulasekara, Shaminda Eranga, Chanaka Welegedara, Nuwan Pradeep and Dhammika Prasad make up the pace attack in the 16-man touring party named by the national selectors.

Mendis, who has 62 wickets from 16 Tests, continues to be on the sidelines in the five-day format since the Cardiff Test against England in May last year, despite being a regular in limited-overs games.

The squad includes left-handed opener Dimuth Karunaratne, 24, who made 0 and 60 not out on his debut in the recent Galle Test against New Zealand which Sri Lanka won by 10 wickets.

The prolific Rangana Herath and Suraj Randiv are the two specialist spinners for the tour. Sri Lanka open the tour with a three-day match against the Cricket Australia Chairman’s XI in Canberra from December 6-8.

The three Tests will be played in Hobart (December 14-18), Melbourne (December 26-30) and Sydney (January 3-7). Sri Lanka’s squad for five one-day internationals and two Twenty20 games after the Tests will be named later.

Sri Lanka’s Test squad:

Mahela Jayawardene (capt), Angelo Mathews (vice-capt), Tillakaratne Dilshan, Kumar Sangakkara, Tharanga Paranavitana, Thilan Samaraweera, Prasanna Jayawardene, Rangana Herath, Nuwan Kulasekara, Shaminda Eranga, Suraj Randiv, Dinesh Chandimal, Chanaka Welegedara, Nuwan Pradeep, Dhammika Prasad, Dimuth Karunaratne.

Abul Hasan slams maiden ton on debut, lifts Bangladesh in 2nd test against West Indies

Posted: 21 Nov 2012 06:20 AM PST

Abul Hasan became only the second man in 135 years of Test cricket to hit a debut hundred batting at number ten on the opening day of the second Test against the West Indies on Wednesday.

Scorecard | Day 1 Highlights 2nd Test

The 20-year-old left-hander was unbeaten on 100 and added an invaluable 172 runs for the unfinished tenth wicket stand with Mohammad Mahmudullah (72) to help the home team recover from 193-8 to 365-8 at close on the opening day.

Hasan became an unlikely hero for the home fans as he turned spinner Sunil Narine for two to reach his hundred, matching Australian Reggie Duff’s feat who scored 104 against England at Melbourne in 1902 while batting at ten.

Hasan, whose previous highest first class score was 61, batted with complete authority as he has so far hit 13 boundaries and three towering sixes off just 108-balls to completely overshadow a destructive 5-81 by paceman Fidel Edwards.

Edwards had pushed Bangladesh to the brink five minutes into resumption after tea when he had captain Mushfiqur Rahim (38) and Sohag Gazi (nought) in one over before Hasan and Mahmudullah subdued the West Indians.

The pair has set a new record for tenth wicket in all Bangladesh Tests, beating the 77 run stand between Mashrafe Mortaza and Shahadat Hossain, made against India at Chittagong in 2007.

The pair is just 24 short of beating the world record for tenth wicket in all Test cricket — 195 set by South African pair Mark Boucher and Pat Symcox, against Pakistan at Johannesburg in 1998.

West Indies were sloppy in the field, as Kieran Powell dropped Hasan when the batsman was on 42 and Mahmudullah was floored by Darren Bravo when on 37 — both off a luckless left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul and both proving costly.

Hasan made the most of the chance, hitting a four and six off Darren Sammy to complete his half-century off just 55 balls and continued in the same vein in the last hour.

Mahmudullah, a recognised batsman overshadowed by the newcomer, has so far hit nine fours in his 89-ball knock.

In the first session, West Indian captain Sammy had helped derail the home team by dismissing Shahriar Nafees (26) opener Tamim Iqbal (32) in quick succession after Bangladesh won the toss and batted.

But it was fellow paceman Edwards who further reduced the home team in the second over after lunch, removing first Test centurion Naeem Islam (16) and star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan (17) in successive overs.

Bangladesh, who trail 0-1 in the series after losing the first Test by 77 runs in Dhaka, lost opener Nazimuddin in the third over of the innings for just four.

Iqbal and Nafees batted sensibly to add 59 for the second wicket but Sammy struck twice to give the West Indies the upper hand.

Nafees edged a wide delivery to the wicket-keeper while Iqbal was bowled off a sharp incoming delivery.

Edwards then took two wickets in his first over after tea break, with Rahim caught brilliantly by Ramdin and then trapped Gazi, but Hasan and Mahmudullah spoiled the good work in the end.

Graeme Smith backs Imran Tahir to trouble Australia in second test

Posted: 21 Nov 2012 04:43 AM PST

Skipper Graeme Smith has backed leg-spinner Imran Tahir to trouble Australia’s left-handers as South Africa seek to establish control of the three-match series in Thursday’s Adelaide Test.

The Proteas have made two changes for the second Test, bringing in Tahir and debutant Faf Du Plessis, following a draw in the first Test in Brisbane.

Tahir takes over from paceman Rory Kleinveldt, who was wicketless and ineffective on his Test debut in Brisbane, while Du Plessis comes in for the injured JP Duminy.

Adelaide traditionally takes spin late in the match and Smith is banking on wrist-spinner Tahir to make a valuable contribution with his wrong’un turning away from the left-handers.

Australia’s team is stacked with five left-handers among its top seven batsmen and the Proteas are banking on Tahir to make an impact after being left out of the series opener on an unresponsive Gabba wicket.

Pakistan-born Tahir, 33, has captured 26 wickets in 10 Tests since his debut against Australia in Cape Town last year and Smith is confident he will do his bit in Adelaide.

“Hopefully there’s a lot of rough (bowlers’ foot marks), not for me, but for the Australian left-handers and he’s certainly used the rough well in the times he’s played for us,” Smith said.

“He created a lot of stress for Andrew Strauss and the left-handers in England so the wrong’un turning away from the bat is not a bad option. He’s got enough to really contribute in this game.”

Smith added that Tahir must have faith in himself to stick at it over the five days of a Test match.

“Naturally, he’ll be anxious to always do well, that’s Imran’s personality, but he’s contributed in key ways for us over the last few Test matches and his role is important,” he said.

“Not everything is going to go your way in Test cricket, but you have to be able to find a way to contribute over those five days and I think Imran has done that well for us and I think all of us would love to see him pick up a huge wicket haul.

“Imran is the frontline spinner and we’ve backed him.”

Smith said it was also a great opportunity for Du Plessis, who has played 26 one-day internationals and four Twenty20 internationals for his country.

“I think Faf is in the same mould bowling as JP (Duminy),” Smith said.

“He can play a role and obviously by picking Imran he will front up for the majority of that spin option, but having Faf available is having someone else in the group who can contribute.

“I think he’s had a high standard in the last few years. He’s played a role in the one-day and Twenty20 formats and I know he’s really excited to get the opportunity to play Test cricket.”

Smith said the South Africans, particularly the bowlers, were looking to improve after fading in Brisbane after scoring 450 in the first innings.

It will be the second Test match for the Proteas since they attained the number one ranking and expectations are high for a crucial win which could ultimately win the series.

“For us a disappointment in a draw is good for us, it shows that people expect us to play well and to perform well and that’s exciting for us,” Smith said.

“We come to Adelaide knowing there are a few areas where we can definitely improve on.”

South Africa include Imran Tahir, Faf du Plessis for Adelaide test against Australia

Posted: 21 Nov 2012 04:00 AM PST

South Africa have made two changes for Thursday’s second Test against Australia in Adelaide, bringing in leg-spinner Imran Tahir and all-rounder Faf du Plessis, who will make his debut.

Tahir replaces paceman Rory Kleinveldt, who went wicketless in the drawn Brisbane Test, while Du Plessis plays in place of the injured JP Duminy.

Skipper Graeme Smith said Tahir would be the frontline spinner on an Adelaide Oval pitch expected to take wear as the match goes on.

“The majority of the time we like to go in with a spinner,” Smith said of Tahir’s selection.

“I think Brisbane was a slight change for us in terms of tactics, but it’s back to normal now and we’re looking forward to him hopefully playing a big part in this Test.”

Du Plessis replaces Duminy, who ruptured an Achilles tendon while warming down on Brisbane’s Gabba ground after the opening day’s play in the first Test.

“I think Faf is in the same mould bowling as JP (Duminy),” Smith said.

“He can play a role and obviously by picking Imran he will front up for the majority of that spin option, but having Faf available is having someone else in the group who can contribute.”

Smith said it was a great opportunity for Du Plessis, who has played 26 one-day internationals and four Twenty20 internationals for his country.

“The fact that he’s making his debut is exciting, it’s a wonderful opportunity for Faf,” Smith said.

“I think he’s had a high standard in the last few years. He’s played a role in the one-day and Twenty20 formats and I know he’s really excited to get the opportunity to play Test cricket.

“He’s been around this group now since England and he’s been part of special times, so I think he’s looking to make a mark on this team.”

South Africa - Graeme Smith (c), Alviro Petersen, Hashim Amla, Jacques Kallis, AB de Villiers (wk), Jacques Rudolph, Faf du Plessis, Vernon Philander, Morne Morkel, Dale Steyn, Imran Tahir.

Shane Watson ruled out, Australia announce unchanged for second test against South Africa

Posted: 21 Nov 2012 03:32 AM PST

All-rounder Shane Watson is short of match fitness and will not be risked in the second Test against South Africa in Adelaide, Australia captain Michael Clarke said.

Watson has been troubled by a calf injury and tried this week to prove his fitness after missing the drawn series opener in Brisbane earlier this month.

But Clarke said doubts about Watson’s injury prompted Australia go with an unchanged team for the second Test, which starts on Thursday.

“He has improved a lot over the last few days… but is probably a few days short of being 100 percent,” Clarke said.

He added that vice-captain Watson would have time to get himself right for the third Test, which starts in Perth four days after the scheduled conclusion of the Adelaide showdown.

“Once we got here, our intent was to give Watto every chance, as a very important player and vice-captain of the team but unfortunately we’ve run out of time,” Clarke said.

Senior batsman Ricky Ponting warned this week against playing a not fully fit Watson, saying it would place too much pressure on his teammates if he was used against the Proteas carrying an injury.

“No one can go into a Test match 70 percent fit,” Ponting told reporters on Tuesday.
“I don’t care if you’re a batsman and a slip fielder. If you can’t bat at 100 percent, then you are putting pressure on other blokes as well.”

Rob Quiney, who made his Test debut in place of Watson in Brisbane, is expected to bat again at number three, while left-arm paceman Mitchell Starc remains the 12th man.

Clarke said he and the selectors stuck with swing bowler Ben Hilfenhaus because of the improvement they witnessed from the bowling attack in the latter days of the Brisbane Test.

“I thought the bowlers came back really well. We took 14 South African wickets where they took five of ours,” he said.

“I think we’ve got a good combination. We’ve got a good mixture of aggression but also bowlers who can bowl long spells and dry runs up if required out there on that wicket.

“Generally in Adelaide, you have to bowl quite tight during periods of the game.”

Australian squad – Michael Clarke (c), David Warner, Ed Cowan, Rob Quiney, Ricky Ponting, Mike Hussey, Matthew Wade (wk), Peter Siddle, James Pattinson, Nathan Lyon, Ben Hilfenhaus, Mitchell Starc (12th man).
