Jonny Bairstow out to controversial decision in 2nd Test #IndvsEng

Posted: 25 Nov 2012 07:50 AM PST

England batsman Jonny Bairstow, who was dismissed in the final over before lunch on day three of the ongoing second Test against India here today, may not have been out as per the laws of cricket.

Bairstow stretched forward and tried to flick left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha against the turn and the ball went to Gautam Gambhir at silly point, struck the fielder’s hand and hit his helmet’s grill and dropped back into his hands.

The batsman walked off immediately and the fielding side as well as not out batsman Kevin Pietersen too walked off the field for lunch with the two umpires.

But replays later showed exactly what happened and the two umpires, Tony Hill and Aleem Dar, were seen having a discussion with India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni just before they trooped out for the start of the second session.

It was not clear what exactly transpired in the conversation between the two umpires and the India captain. The decision stayed and Samit Patel came out to bat after lunch with Pietersen.

Incidentally, in the last series between the two teams in which India was whitewashed 4-0, a huge controversy had erupted in the second Test at Trent Bridge, when Ian Bell, who was on 137, left the crease thinking that a hit by his partner at the wicket Eoin Morgan had crossed the boundary and that the two umpires had called tea.

Fielder Praveen Kumar threw in from the deep after the ball had stopped just inside the ropes back to the middle and the bails were taken off. The Indians appealed and Bell was given out.

The batsman walked off but was reinstated after Dhoni, in a rare gesture of sportsmanship following a discussion between the two teams’ managements, withdrew the appeal and Bell batted on before getting out at 159.

But no such thing was repeated this time and Bairstow stayed out.

Ross Taylor, Williamson lift New Zealand on Day 1 of 2nd Test against Sri Lanka #SLvsNZ

Posted: 25 Nov 2012 07:05 AM PST

Ross Taylor hit a solid century as New Zealand recovered from early blows to post a healthy 223-2 on the opening day of the second and final Test against Sri Lanka on Sunday.

Scorecard | Day 1 Highlights 2nd Test

The tourists were struggling at 14-2 in the fourth over before skipper Taylor (119 not out) and Kane Williamson (95 not out) propped up the innings with an unfinished 209-run stand for the third wicket at the P. Sara Oval.

Taylor completed his eighth Test hundred, and his first against Sri Lanka, in the last session when he flicked seamer Shaminda Eranga to deep square-leg for two.

Williamson provided valuable support and looked set to complete his third Test century when play was called off due to rain, with more than nine overs remaining in the day.

New Zealand, shot out for 221 and 118 during their 10-wicket defeat in the opening Test in Galle, staged a more determined performance this time and Taylor led from the front.

The tourists made the most of winning the toss on a good batting pitch as Taylor and Williamson frustrated Sri Lanka with responsible batting against both pace and spin.

The New Zealand captain, who gave a difficult chance on 14 when his edge off Eranga went past Angelo Mathews in the slips, has so far hit 10 fours in his 241-ball knock, while Williamson’s 229-ball innings included eight fours.

The pair denied Sri Lanka for more than two sessions, taking no risks and patiently waiting for loose deliveries to punish.

Left-arm spinner Rangana Herath, who took 11 wickets in the last Test, was pressed into the attack after 14 overs but failed to break the stand. He has so far conceded 45 runs in his 21 overs.

New Zealand made a poor start, losing openers Martin Guptill and Brendon McCullum in the first four overs.

Guptill was caught by Mathews at first slip in Nuwan Kulasekara’s opening over. McCullum was unlucky to be given out leg-before off Eranga as TV replays suggested he had inside-edged the delivery on to his pad.

Guptill and McCullum each scored four.

Sri Lanka made one change from the last Test, replacing Dimuth Karunaratne with fit-again opener Tillakaratne Dilshan.

The tourists brought in debutant leg-spinner Todd Astle in place of all-rounder James Franklin.

Monty Panesar put England in command, India on the verge of loosing 2nd test #IndvsEng

Posted: 25 Nov 2012 06:53 AM PST

India were staring at an embarrassing defeat in the second cricket Test against a spirited England who rode on Kevin Pietersen and Alastair Cook’s brilliant centuries to gain a vital 86-run lead before the spinners tightened the noose around the hosts on Sunday.

Scorecard | Day 3 Highlights 2nd Test

Pietersen (186) and Cook (122) notched up their 22nd Test centuries in a masterly exhibition of batsmanship on a turning track as England folded up for 413 just at the stroke of tea before reducing the hosts to a precarious 117 for seven at close on the third day.

After conceding a 86-run lead, India’s top order batsmen surrendered rather tamely to the English spinners who exploited the conditions far better than their Indian counterparts who inexplicably lacked the sting.

Gautam Gambhir (53) and Harbhajan Singh (1) were at the crease with India just 31 runs ahead on a day which saw as many as 15 wickets fall on a Wankhede pitch giving ample assistance to the spinners. Virender Sehwag (9), Cheteshwar Pujara (6), Sachin Tendulkar (8), Virat Kohli (7), Yuvraj Singh (8) captain M S Dhoni (6) and R Ashwin (11) were back in the pavilion much to the disappointment of a huge Sunday crowd.

Monty Panesar, who claimed five wickets in the first innings, was the chief destroyer with another five-for as India’s famed batsmen fell prey to the left-arm spinner who extracted a lot of spin and bounce.

The day clearly belonged to Pietersen and Cook who tilted the balance in England’s favour with a record 206-run partnership for the third wicket, eclipsing the previous record of 144 between Mike Gatting and Allan Lamb in 1984-85.

Cook, who struck his second successive century, anchored the innings while Pietersen was the more aggressive partner as the pair frustrated the Indian spinners. Pietersen never allowed the spinners to settle down as he kept the score moving with a flurry of shots.

But the England innings collapsed after the dismissal of Pietersen, with the last six wickets falling for just 56 runs. Pragyan Ojha was the pick of the Indian bowlers with five for 143 while Harbhajan Singh and Ashwin chipped in with two wickets apiece.

India sliced through the England innings after Cook was dismissed. With their efforts, both Cook and Pietersen joined Walter Hammond, Colin Cowdrey and Geoff Boycott who hold the record for the maximum Test tons for England.

The duo’s double century-stand assumed more significance after the last eight English wickets fell for 139 runs.

Ojha had figures of five for 143, his second fifer in as many Tests.

England lost their last four wickets in a heap, for the addition of just seven runs, once wicketkeeper Matt Prior was run out at 406.

The tourists, who resumed on 178 for two overnight, were dismissed eight minutes before tea. The England skipper departed when he edged Ashwin to Dhoni who later caught Pietersen off Ojha in the second hour after lunch.

Cook’s departure before lunch triggered a collapse in which seven wickets fell in quick succession.

Once the Cook-Pietersen partnership was broken, Ojha got into his wicket taking act with a spell of three for 52 on either side of lunch during which he sent back Jonny Bairstow (9), Samit Patel (26) and Pietersen, who struck 21 fours and four sixes in his 233-ball knock in 317 minutes.

Ojha had accounted for Nick Compton and Jonathan Trott yesterday. But Pietersen was especially harsh on Ojha who foxed him twice at Ahmedabad.

Ashwin captured the wicket of Cook while Harbhajan Singh, the third spinner in the team, struck late in the session to send back Stuart Broad caught brilliantly at silly point by a diving Pujara, and then trapped James Anderson in front.

Ricky Ponting unsure of his selection for Perth test against South Africa #AusvsSA

Posted: 25 Nov 2012 02:15 AM PST

Ricky Ponting has said there are no guarantees he will be selected for the third and final Test against South Africa in Perth, let alone play out the Australian summer after a run of three consecutive failures with the bat against the Proteas.

Ponting has scored a duck, four and 16 in the current Test series, and a solitary half-century in his past nine innings, sparking calls for the 37-year-old to give up his place to groom a younger successor.

The former Australia captain had not had a conversation with selectors but said he expected one in the “near future”.

“The disappointing thing for me is with the start of this Test series, coming in I felt in really good touch,” Ponting said in a television interview with Channel Nine at Adelaide Oval.

“My (Sheffield) Shield stuff early season was really good and I actually felt like I was batting better than I have in a few years.

“And I said coming into the summer that it really is a game-by-game thing with me now. I can’t afford to look any further forward.

“I’ve got to get my head down, I’ve got to score runs. And if I score runs then I’ll get myself selected, and if I don’t, then I leave the door open for someone else to come in in my spot.

“That’s the way it sits at the moment. We’ll wait and see how it sits at the end of the game.”

The manner of Ponting’s dismissals have been seen as a player struggling with both technique and confidence.

Ponting was out caught behind for nought in the drawn first Test in Brisbane chasing a ball well outside his off-stump and was bowled in the first innings in Adelaide, falling to the crease after making a mess of his footwork.

He then chopped the ball onto his stumps in the second innings on Saturday after being welcomed to the crease with a warm ovation at Adelaide Oval.

“Yesterday was probably a ball that I shouldn’t get bowled on – back of a length and short.

“How do I feel form-wise? Probably if anything I’ve been a little bit tentative.

“Certainly in the first innings in Brisbane it was a tentative shot. Yesterday afternoon it was a tentative shot. And that’s not the normal way that I play.

“I probably just needed to be a bit more positive and get through that way.”

Australia’s selectors have a number of youthful options that could be considered for the third Test, and the three-Test home series against Sri Lanka.

Two players with Test experience have been in solid domestic form, with Pakistan-born Usman Khawaja and Phillip Hughes making recent centuries for their states in the Sheffield Shield competition.

Ponting said he was a “realist” about the goal of playing the Ashes series against England next year.

“I live in the real world and I know that if I’m not getting runs there’s no chance at all,” he said.

“I might not make the summer out, so I definitely won’t be in England. But, we’ll wait and see what happens at the end of this game.

“Hopefully getting a good win here and we’ll see how we go for Perth.

“That’s really all it is. I’ve got no illusions or disillusions about where I’m at or where my cricket is at.

“It’s just a matter or working hard, and then hopefully when I do have a chance to bat in the middle I’m a bit more assertive than I have been in the last couple of games.”

Australia in command over South Africa on Day 4 of Adelaide test

Posted: 25 Nov 2012 01:45 AM PST

Australia struck two mighty blows with the wickets of Graeme Smith and Hashim Amla to have South Africa in deep trouble in their daunting run chase to win the second Test in Adelaide on Sunday.

Scorecard | Day 4 Highlights 2nd Test

Skipper Michael Clarke declared Australia’s second innings at 267 for eight, leaving the top-ranked Proteas an improbable target of 430 runs to win off a maximum of 140 overs to go one up in the three-Test series.

Australia grabbed the vital wickets of first innings centurion Smith and Amla in the session before tea.

At the interval, Alviro Petersen was on 20 with Jacques Rudolph narrowly avoiding a leg before wicket review to be not out two.

The odds are firmly stacked against the South Africans, needing to set a new record for a successful fourth innings run chase at the Adelaide Oval.

The existing record is the 315/6 Australia scored 110 years ago to overhaul England.

South Africa skipper Smith, who scored 122 in the first innings, was out second ball when he got a thick edge to a Ben Hilfenhaus outswinger and Ricky Ponting snapped up a splendid low catch at second slip.

It was also a psychological blow as the Proteas have not lost a Test match in the previous 25 matches in which Smith has scored a century.

Amla was taken at slip by a juggling Clarke off spinner Nathan Lyon for 17, nine balls before tea.

Both Smith and Amla were huge scalps for the Australians because of their ability to occupy the crease and bat for long periods.

Clarke declared halfway through the fourth day with James Pattinson not out 29 and Ben Hilfenhaus on 18.

Mike Hussey, chasing his third successive century in the series, was out in the over before lunch for 54 off 95 balls. It was his 29th Test half-century.

Hussey attempted to pull Morne Morkel but the ball came off high on his bat and he spooned a catch to Dale Steyn at midwicket.

Clarke, who scored 230 in the first innings, fell leg before wicket to Steyn for 38.

Shakib Al Hasan ruled out of first 2 ODI’s against West Indies #BanvsWI

Posted: 25 Nov 2012 01:15 AM PST

Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has been ruled out of the first two one-day internationals against West Indies with a shin injury, team officials said on Sunday.

Shakib had an MRI scan on his right tibia bone in Khulna on Saturday after the close of fourth day’s play.

“We have decided that he will take no further part in the second Test match and will miss the two ODIs in Khulna,” physio Vibhav Singh said in statement.

“We will review his scan report with an orthopaedic specialist in Dhaka to decide the best management plan for Shakib.

The first two ODIs of the five-match series will be held in Khulna on November 30 and December 2.

West Indies beat Bangladesh in 2nd test to clinch test series 2-0 #BanvsWI

Posted: 25 Nov 2012 12:43 AM PST

Pacer Tino Best took a career-best six-wicket haul to fire the West Indies to a crushing ten-wicket win against Bangladesh in the second Test in Khulna on Sunday, sealing the series 2-0.

Scorecard | Day 5 Highlights 2nd Test

The 31-year-old Barbadian followed his maiden five-wicket haul in the first Test win in Dhaka with 6-40 to dismiss the home team for 287 in the second innings on the fifth and final morning at Sheikh Abu Naser Stadium.

The tourists knocked off the required 27 runs in just 4.4 overs to win their second successive series in Bangladesh. They also won the two-Test series 1-0 last year.

Chris Gayle finished with 20 not out while fellow opener Kieran Powell (nine not out) sealed the win with two consecutive boundaries off Naeem Islam.

Bangladesh avoided an innings defeat thanks to a fighting 94 by Nasir Hossain but lost their last four wickets with the addition of 61 runs after resuming at 226-6.

It is Bangladesh’s 65th defeat in 75 Tests since gaining Test status 12 years ago — a dismal record which constantly raises questions over their right to play the five-day version of the game.

Their losses include 34 defeats by an innings.

Shakib Al Hasan had delayed a West Indian win on Saturday when he hit a defiant 97 but he fell to an irresponsible shot in the penultimate over of the day, exposing the tail for the West Indies on the final day.

Left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul, who took 3-67, removed Mohammad Mahmudullah in the first over on Sunday when the batsman failed to keep an attempted sweep down and was caught behind by Denesh Ramdin for two.

Best then came into his own, clean bowling Sohag Gazi with his first ball of the day and ended Nasir’s resistance with a sharp incoming delivery which hit the stumps.

The 20-year-old Nasir, who scored 96 in the first Test in Dhaka, faced 157 balls and hit 11 fours and a six.

The two-Test series will be followed by five one-day internationals with the first in Khulna on Friday. The two teams will also play a Twenty20 international.

Bangladesh vs West Indies 2nd Test Post Match Presentation Khulna 2012

Posted: 24 Nov 2012 10:47 PM PST

Sammy: It’s a step in the right direction for West Indies and we wanted to win this series badly. Tino is a brilliant bowler as he performed consistently. All the players performed well to their potential and I am happy with the overall effort. I think couple of new guys are praticing in Dhaka. The confidence in the team is good right now and we are a stronger unit in the ODIs and T20Is. I would like to thank the crowd for their support.

Rahim: I think in this Test match, boys showed lot of character, but we didn’t play well to the potential. Congrats to Shakib for 100 Test wicket and Nasir also played well. In the West Indies team, 7 players got to their hundreds, but we couldn’t match that. We will fight hard in the ODI series.

Shiv Chanderpaul is the Man of the Series for the scoring 354 runs in the 2-match series.

Samuels: It was an important innings for me and the team effort was very good. The wicket was very slow and once you are set in you can score runs easily here. I am enjoying my stay here in Bangladesh and is looking forward to going to Dhaka.

Marlon Samuels is the Man of the Match for his double ton.

A plaque is being awarded to Shakib for becoming the highest wicket taker for Bangladesh in Tests

New Zealand wins toss, opts to bat vs Sri Lanka – 2nd Test Colombo 2012 #SLvsNZ

Toss: New Zealand have won the toss and elected to bat

Ross Taylor: ‘We will bat first as it looks like a very good wicket. We need to show some fight. We are going through a lean patch and we have trained really hard. Each batsman is different and they will have to go out and score some runs. We have to be positive against Herath. Todd Astle is making his debut and James Franklin sits out.’

Mahela Jayawardene: ‘It is not a bad toss to lose. We cannot be complacent and we have to improve on what we did in Galle. We need players like Rangana Herath who gives in a good performance day in and day out. We have to finish this series on a positive note and ensure we head to Australia on a positive note. Dilshan has recovered from his back injury and he replaces Karunaratne.’

Pitch Report: Overnight rain has resulted in a lot of moisture on this track. It is a dry wicket and there is no grass on this track. There are a lot of cracks that will not open up. The team that wins the toss should bat first.

England started off well in the second innings with skipper Alastair Cook and Kevin Pietersen challenging Indian spinners on turning wicket. England were 178 for 2 at close of Day 2 and it will be crucial first session on Day 3 where both teams would like to keep things moving. India need to break this partnership as soon as they can.

Left-handed Cook (batting 87) once again led from the front and shared a 110-run stand with Pietersen (62 not out) to put England in a promising position going into third day at the Wankhede Stadium. Left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha took both the wickets to fall.

Brief Scores: India 327 (Cheteshwar Pujara 135, Ravichandran Ashwin 68; Monty Panesar 5 for 129, Greame Swann 4 for 70) lead England 178 for 2 (Alastair Cook 87*, Kevin Pietersen 62*; Pragyan Ojha 2 for 65) by 149 runs.
